  • Kate Mulgrew Was Born With Teeth, Gave Up a Baby

Kate Mulgrew is seeing a career resurgence as Red with Orange is the New Black, but to millions she will always be Captain Katherine Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager.

Kate Mulgrew is more than just the two roles she happens to be best known for. And now she is telling that story in a new memoir titled Born With Teeth.

Yes, Kate Mulgrew was indeed born with teeth

Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: “Use it,” Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work.

Kate Mulgrew’s career was just taking off when she became pregnant at age 22. She gave the baby up for adoption. Later in life, she would spend another 22 years looking for her daughter.

Finally, Kate Mulgrew got a phone call from Danielle, the daughter she had given up for adoption all those years before.

“Time stopped,” she told People Magazine. “I remembered the notes dancing in the first light of dawn in the Venetian blinds. There was this voice, unrecognizable, but I knew it was her.”

Mulgrew and Danielle did meet while she was filming her famous Star Trek series. Kate Mulgrew said she was so nervous talking to her daughter for the first time that she asked her a series of odd questions, just to keep her on the phone.

“I remember three questions came from her,” Damielle recalled. The first one was, ‘Are you pretty?’ And then the second one was, ‘Are you happy?’ And then the third one was, ‘Do you believe in God?’ That is Kate in a nutshell.”

“I wasn’t thinking,” Kate Mulgrew explained. “I was just desperate to keep my daughter on the line, and the fact that I asked her if she was pretty – let alone if she believed in God – shows how out of it I was. I have no recollection of asking Danielle these questions and find it fascinating that Danielle remembers them so clearly.”

  • Conan O’Brien Relevant Again Thanks to ‘OITNB’

Conan O’Brien Relevant Again Thanks to ‘OITNB’

Gone are the days when Conan O’Brien was a household name. Since the late night host’s departure from NBC, he has been relegated to the deep, dark corners of late nights on TBS, a station which consistently fails to live up to its “Very Funny” slogan. Despite the fact that Conan is no longer featured on a major network, he still manages to stay on the air – a true testament to his survival instincts.

Every once in a while, Conan suddenly becomes relevant again, usually do to some crazy schtick which really has no lasting appeal. With Monday night’s show, Conan was able to save his television career once again by tying himself to a much more popular “television” series, Orange is the New Black.

Essentially the entire cast of the hit Netflix drama appeared on Conan last night, most likely with the hopes that their appearance would help push the show to win even more Emmy awards on August 25. The episode was filled with character-acting, anecdotes from the set of Orange is the New Black, advice from the characters, and constant jabs at Conan himself.

Perhaps the most appealing part of the show, however, was the opening scene. Before creating a parody of the Orange is the New Black opening credits with himself and Andy Richter, Conan received some much needed advice from Laverne Cox (Sophia) concerning the quiff he has been sporting for the past 30 years:

Cox was not the only person to get a jab in on Conan, however. Kate Mulgrew (“Red”), who rose to fame by playing Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, finally got revenge on Conan for him almost destroying her career by forcing her to do an Irish jig on his show in 1995. The payback? Conan had to do a jig of his own, which he openly admitted was not really payback at all, stating, “It’s not really revenge if that’s the crap I’m doing all the time on this show anyway!”

Proof that truer words have never been spoken:

While it’s easy to poke-fun at Conan O’Brien and his antics, last night’s show was quite a success for both Conan and Orange is the New Black. Although Conan might not be winning an Emmy award anytime soon, he can rest his laurels on the fact that he is quintessentially, without a doubt, the weirdest person on late night television.

  • Kate Mulgrew Duped into Narrating Documentary

Actress Kate Mulgrew said on Tuesday in a statement on her Facebook page that she does not stand behind her latest project, a geocentric documentary called The Principle, and that she was “misinformed” about it when she agreed to narrate the film.

Mulgrew, known for her leading role as Capt. Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, posted an explanation on her Facebook page Tuesday, dissociating herself from the controversial documentary that promotes the long debunked theory that the sun revolves around the Earth.

A trailer for The Principle, directed by Katheryne Thomas, begins with a voiceover from Mulgrew: “Everything we think we know about our universe is wrong.”

Robert Sungenis, a Catholic apologist who runs a blog called Galileo Was Wrong, produced the documentary.

Mulgrew, who currently stars as Red in the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black, said in her statement that she does not ascribe to Sungenis’ theories or geocentrism, and that she would not have participated in the project had she known he was involved.

Prominent scientist Laurence Krauss also appears in the documentary and claimed in a Twitter post on Tuesday that he was misrepresented in the film.   Krauss wrote in an article for Slate on Tuesday that “The notion that anyone in the 21st century could take seriously the notion that the sun orbits the Earth, or that the Earth is the centre of the universe, is almost unbelievable.” He also explained that he was reluctant to sue the filmmakers because “it would elevate the profile of something that shouldn’t even rise to the level of popular discussion." • Kate Mulgrew Denounces Creationist Film She Narrated

The Star Trek: Voyager star, Kate Mulgrew, who narrated a film that declares the sun revolves around the earth, has come to her senses and discredited the film, after the fact.

“Everything we think we know about our universe is wrong,” Mulgrew’s voice argues over cosmic images in the trailer for “The Principle,” according to the DailyMail.com.

Mulgrew has come out publicly on her Facebook page to distance herself from the film. Part of her remark made her point clear: “…Let me assure everyone that I completely agree with the eminent physicist Lawrence Krauss, who was himself misrepresented in the film, and who has written a succinct rebuttal in SLATE. I am not a geocentrist, nor am I in any way a proponent of geocentrism.”

This farce of a documentary tries to prove a geocentric idea that has long been proven wrong – but then again, it was financed by the Holocaust-denier Robert Sungenis, who, by the way, added scientists to the documentary without their consent or knowledge.

Physicist Laurence Krauss, one of several scientists to appear in the trailer, wrote a response piece in Slate. In it he lambasted geocentrism and stated that he did not know how the clips of him were obtained.

A statement Krauss made in Slate says it all, “The notion that anyone in the 21st century could take seriously the notion that the sun orbits the Earth, or that the Earth is the center of the universe, is almost unbelievable.”

It is unclear how much Mulgrew knew before she signed up as narrator, however, many fans in the comment section are glad she has come out against the film.

The film will be released this spring and is strongly advertised on Sungenis’ blog, Galileo Was Wrong.

It is doubtful that more than a handful of people will be rushing to the theaters to see it.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2 Reportedly Won’t Focus On Piper As Much

As Netflix’s Orange is the New Black: Season 2 continues production, cast and crew continue to give interviews and tease fans about what they can expect from the next installment of the popular series.

We’ve heard that Laura Prepon, who plays Alex, will only be back for one episode, so obviously there has to be a major shift in plot, considering that she was one of the main characters in the first season. Star Taylor Schilling has said that the coming season will be more compelling, because the writing is better.

TV Guide spoke with creator Jenji Kohan and some of the cast, and got a few more interesting nuggets out of them.

Kohan wouldn’t say whether or not the season jumps ahead in time or picks up right at the end of the first one, but she did reportedly indicate that the second season won’t focus as much on the Piper character as the first one did, but will rather divide the story more evenly among its many characters.

Interestingly, she even gave a hint about Season 3, saying that if the show does indeed return for a third season (which seems pretty likely considering Netflix renewed it for a second one even before the first one debuted to tremendous critical acclaim and fan buzz), there will be more focus on the guards and their stories.

Cast member Kate Mulgrew reportedly said that Season 2 will have more about the histories of Poussé and Black Cindy. They have indeed been popping up in the set photos being posted to Instagram. There will also be more about Red’s backstory. From TV Guide:

However, she adds that we will be seeing more of Red’s backstory and what exactly landed her in prison. “I just know that they weren’t putting candy bars in my deep freeze, if you know what I mean,” Mulgrew says. She also explains that whatever went down between Red and the Russians has something to do with the reason we haven’t seen her husband at visiting hours yet (but thankfully it’s nothing too dark). “Well, the Russians weren’t happy, but my husband is alive. Don’t worry,” Mulgrew assures.

Taryn Manning reportedly indicated that there might be hope for Piper and Pennsatucky to reconcile, but that’s still up in the air. She did recently reveal what she said is a “ginormous” plot point of the second season, which is about Healy giving Pennsatucky the green light to kill Piper.

Take a look at some recent pics from the set of Season 2 here.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2: Red Says We’ll Find Out Why Nobody Will Mess With Her Gravy Again

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2: Red Says We’ll Find Out Why Nobody Will Mess With Her Gravy Again

As the Orange is the New Black buzz continues, cast members continue to talk about the show, and tease fans about what they might get to see on the already much-anticipated Season 2.

LA Weekly posted an extensive Q&A with actress Kate Mulgrew, who plays Red on the show. As we’ve seen with various other cast interviews since Season 2 began filming, the conversation inevitably turns to what’s going to happen in the second season.

If you’re concerned with season one spoilers, stop reading now.

So far, Dascha Polanco, who plays Dayanara Diaz, has indicated that she doesn’t know if her character is really pregnant – a plot point which will surely be addressed in the upcoming season – and Pablo Schreiber, who plays Pornstache, has said we can assume we’ll be seeing more of him next season (as if there were any doubt).

LA Weekly asked Mulgrew if Red has a plan for preventing anyone from doing anything like tainting her gravy (as we saw in season 1) again.

“I’m sure she does,” Mulgrew responded. “But I can’t share that with you. [laughs] Nobody will EVER [taint] my gravy again. For a multitude of reasons, which you will find out later on. You will find out everything in the second season.”

She also notes that she grew her hair out between shooting season 1 and the start of season 2 production, though she wouldn’t say anything about whether her look will change on the show.

When LA Weekly asked her what entrée plans Red has when she’s running the kitchen again, Mulgrew responded, “She’s going to find that elusive chicken [that Piper spotted in the prison yard]. And she is going to make Chicken Kiev and it’s going to be the only silent scene ever shot for Orange Is the New Black because the women are going to be so dazzled, so overcome with pleasure, that they’re just going to eat the Chicken Kiev in absolute blissful silence. That’s my dream.”

Okay, so no real spoilers from any of the cast member so far, which is good. Would you really want them? Just enough chatter to make us consider the possibilities. We’ll probably be considering them for a while, as the show will not return until an unspecified date next year.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Author And Cast Members Talk Stereotypes And Real-Life Prison

Over the weekend, Kate Mulgrew, Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, cast members of the new Netflix series Orange is the New Black, along with Piper Kerman, who wrote the memoir on which it is based, appeared on Melissa Harris-Perry’s show on MSNBC to discuss the show, the stereotypes it deals with, the real-life prison system, etc.

The Network has shared a few segments from the discussion on its site:

Orange is the New Black has already been renewed for a second season. Filming began a week ago, and several pictures from the set have been released. The show has also picked up a new cast member, and promoted a couple of others to regulars.

Many of the cast member beyond those who appeared on MSNBC have been doing interviews, and I would imagine we’ll be seeing quite a few more, as the show has generated a great deal of buzz. It appears to be Netflix’s most popular original series so far.

Naturally, now that a lot of people have had time to breeze through the first season, a lot of speculation and questions are coming out surrounding plot points of the forthcoming season (due in 2014). Dascha Polanco, who plays Dayanara Diaz on the show recently discussed a key part of her character’s storyline with Vulture last week, for example. It will be interesting to see if we can make it to the second season without too many spoilers coming out.
