Kate Del Castillo Will Proceed With Netflix Project Despite Receiving Negative Press

After receiving negative press in the past few months due to her involvement with Mexican narco kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Kate del Castillo continues to gain the support of Netflix as she’s set to star in an original series.

Despite the not-so-favorable attention brought about by the controversial interview that del Castillo mediated between actor Sean Penn and El Chapo, Netflix is staying loyal to the Mexican actress. El Chapo’s arrest early this year after his second escape came days after Sean Penn published an article about the drug lord for Rolling Stone magazine.

The Netflix original series entitled Ingobernable stars Kate del Castillo as first lady of Mexico. Netflix’s director of communications for Latin America, Kari Perez said that production will start this year.

The producers of Ingobernable also had nothing but praises for Kate del Castillo, saying that her past roles redefined what a female character should be in Hispanic television. Netflix Vice President for Local Originals Erick Barmack also revealed that the Spanish-language series will be shown in Mexico.

The actress also recently revealed in an interview with CNN that she fears the Mexican government. She says, “they have the power to manipulate and do things.” She further revealed that she doesn’t fear the cartel, El Chapo, or his people.  She says she is more afraid of the Mexican government, noting how they’ve “destroyed” her for months now.

Kate del Castillo claims that the leaked text messages exchanged between her and El Chapo were taken out of context and was made to look like she was having an affair with him.

Despite the threat, the actress has reiterated that she will still produce a biopic about the life of the drug lord once she resolves her legal woes.

  • Kate Del Castillo Talks About An Intense Moment Alone With El Chapo

Kate Del Castillo Talks About An Intense Moment Alone With El Chapo

Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress who agreed to an arranged meeting with alleged drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman last year while he was on the run from authorities, sat down for an in-depth interview recently about what that meeting was like and why actor Sean Penn was involved.

Kate says she was contacted by people representing El Chapo, who said he wanted to have a sit-down with her to give her permission to his life story for a movie. Sean Penn, she says, was interested in the possibility of such a film and came along after she agreed to meet up with El Chapo in a secret mountain location after he escaped from prison last July.

When they got there, she says, Sean Penn mentioned that he was working on an article for Rolling Stone about the encounter, something she maintains he never told her about beforehand. The news threw her off and she had to work to keep her reaction neutral so El Chapo wouldn’t see her surprise and think something shady was going on. Later, she found herself alone with him for a moment as everyone was going to bed and says it was one of the most intense moments she’s had.

“I was waiting for him to make a move. I had no idea what intentions he had…everything happened in my head Those seconds were crucial for me. I thought everything. My heart started pounding…I actually got the guts to tell him. I felt, this is now or never, and if I don’t say it right now, I might not have another opportunity. And if I say it, these might be my last words.”

Kate del Castillo says she told El Chapo, “You’re a powerful man. You can do something good.’ I was literally dying inside. I thought, if he gets mad, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I thought I was gonna faint.”

Sean Penn maintains that he was never there because of interest in a film, and that Kate simply wants to distance herself from the meeting due to attention she’s received from the Mexican authorities.

“I stand by my piece. I think Kate would be happier to separate herself from recollections that inflame the Mexican government at this point,” Penn said.

  • Kate del Castillo on El Chapo: She Remembers Things Differently Than Sean Penn

Kate del Castillo spoke with The New Yorker in recent days about her connection to drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera–El Chapo–and her account seems to differ significantly from that of actor Sean Penn.

The Mexican actress claims she didn’t know Penn was working on a Rolling Stone article about El Chapo until the three of them met for the first time.

Kate del Castillo told The New Yorker that one of El Chapo’s lawyers contacted her about two and a half years after she tweeted about the drug lord in 2012. Del Castillo said the lawyer asked her to come to Mexico to talk about El Chapo’s interest in creating a movie about his life. I

In September 2014, Kate del Castillo flew to Mexico City to meet with some of El Chapo’s lawyers. They told her their client had tried to send her flowers after her initial tweet about El Chapo, but they couldn’t find her address.

Kate del Castillo claims El Chapo wanted her to have the rights to his life story.

“Because you’re very brave,” they told her. “Because you’re outspoken. Because you always tell the truth, even when it’s about the government. Because you come from a great family. And because he’s a fan of yours from La Reina del Sur.”

Kate del Castillo stars in a telenovela series called La Reina del Sur.

The actress says she received a letter from El Chapo clarifying his intentions about his life story.

“With respect to the rights, I want it to be clear that you are the one that decides everything that is done, what you want and what you don’t want,” Kate del Castillo says the letter reads.

El Chapo signed his rights to the story over to del Castillo for a film that would be co-produced by Argentine producers Fernando Sulichin and Jose Ibanez.

After El Chapo broke out of prison last July, Sean Penn asked Sulicin to get him together with Kate del Castillo. They met for lunch. The actress tells The New Yorker she believed Sean Penn wanted to work on the film project with them.

This is the point at which Kate del Castillo and Sean Penn’s stories differ.

When they first met, Sean Penn produced a letter from Rolling Stone saying he and the two producers were working on a story. Kate del Castillo was to serve as their translator.

“Kate was a valued partner in our journey, which was embarked upon with total transparency and full knowledge of our collective interests,” Penn told The New Yorker. “From our first meeting, I discussed with her my intention to interview Joaquín Guzmán for an article in connection with the meeting that she facilitated. We discussed it again during the flight and the trip to Mexico with our partners.”

Kate del Castillo said Penn’s claim he discussed the article idea with her at lunch that day is “total and complete bullshit.”

She goes on to explain that by the time she met with Sean Penn to look over his first draft of the article, she realized he wasn’t interested in the film project.

To this day, Kate del Castillo has issues with the way Sean Penn portrayed her in the Rolling Stone article.

She believes Penn made it seem like she had encouraged his connection with El Chapo prior to a conversation about a movie project. She also disagrees that the group went through “a military checkpoint on the way to their meeting with the drug lord.”

Who is telling the truth? Who stands more to gain from this situation–Kate del Castillo or Sean Penn?

  • Kate Del Castillo: Sean Penn Lied About The ‘Rolling Stone’ Interview

Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress who arranged the covert meeting between Sinaloa drug lord El Chapo and award-winning actor Sean Penn, is mad about Penn’s Rolling Stone article as she reportedly had no idea the actor was planning to publish his meeting with the fugitive.

Del Castillo was said to have set up the meeting between Penn and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, believing they were about to discuss a movie about the drug lord’s life. However, Penn surprised the Mexican star when he told her that they came to do an interview with her, multiple sources close to the Mexican actress said.

El Chapo’s lawyer’s allegedly contacted the actress because the drug kingpin wanted to discuss a possible movie project about his life. Kate del Castillo invited two film directors and one of them allegedly contacted Penn to join them. Del Castillo thought Penn could help so she agreed to include the actor and let him meet the fugitive.

Prior to the meeting, Rolling Stone reportedly gave Penn and the two other filmmakers a letter that made their assignment official. This gave the three men immunity from any legal consequences as they were acting as journalists. However, the letter excluded del Castillo.

Del Castillo said she felt betrayed by Penn and that she was put in danger because of the surprise interview.

Sources close to Sean Penn claimed that del Castillo knew about the interview and the actor had allegedly informed her about his plans before they met the sought-after drug lord.

The article about El Chapo was published the day after the Mexican drug leader was recaptured by the authorities. Their meeting with the Sinaloa cartel leader was essential in tracking the kingpin’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the Mexican government stated that it has no plans to investigate Sean Penn, Kate del Castillo, and the two filmmakers, but would be probing into the circumstances of the secret meeting.

  • Kate Del Castillo Faces Investigation For Money Laundering

Kate del Castillo is currently on the radar of the Mexican authorities after signs of her alleged involvement in money laundering were discovered.

The film and TV actress reportedly used money given by drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, in order to fund a tequila business named Honor Del Castillo.

The government requires del Castillo to appear before a Mexican consulate in order for the investigation to commence. She was supposedly expected to attend a meeting on Monday, but failed to appear at the consulate in Los Angeles.

However, a report stated that she can choose from two more dates in which she can go to a Mexican consulate, although it would no longer be in Los Angeles.

The 43-year-old Mexican-American actress was in the headlines earlier this month after a Rolling Stone article stated that she was the person behind the meeting between El Chapo and actor Sean Penn.

According to the entry written by Penn, he and Kate del Castillo went to the Sierra Madre mountain range in Mexico where they met Guzman in the middle of a jungle.

Penn and El Chapo agreed to have an interview at a later time, although the initial plans did not push through. Instead, Penn asked questions through a BBM device, and Guzman answered them through prerecorded videotape.

In the initial meeting between Sean Penn and El Chapo, it was believed that Kate del Castillo brought some of the tequila from her budding business. At this time, Mexican authorities believe that Guzman gave del Castillo some money to finance her business.

El Chapo is a notorious drug lord who began his operations in the Mexican region of Sinaloa. He was first arrested in 1993, but bribed guards so he could escape in 2001. Guzman was again arrested in February 2014 before escaping in July 2015.

The meeting organized by Kate del Castillo allgedly led to the kingpin’s recent recapture.

  • Kate Del Castillo Threatened By Mexican Authorities For Meeting With ‘El Chapo’

Kate del Castillo is currently under investigation because of her heavy involvement in the secret meeting with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, which resulted in an Rolling Stone interview with actor Sean Penn.

According to Univision, the 43-year-old Mexican-American actress is worried that the Mexican government wants to “destroy her” and that she is being used as a target of a witch hunt.

After the controversial El Chapo interview,Kate del Castillo is now a primary suspect in a money laundering investigation by Mexican authorities. Attorney General Arely Gomez stated that they are exploring the possibility of El Chapo’s funding of del Castillo’s Tequila Honor del Castillo business.

The actress has declined to comment on the allegations in order to avoid further scrutiny from the Mexican government. “I have no reason to give explanations to the press. If I don’t talk it’s because my lawyers told me not to because the government wants to destroy me,” said Kate del Castillo in a message addressed to Univision.

Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho recently came to del Castillo’s defense and confirmed to the media that her friend is indeed being threatened by Mexican authorities.

In an interview with TVyNovelas, Cacho revealed parts of her conversation with Kate del Castillo and admitted that the actress was “scared” and that “she doesn’t understand why the Mexican Government is attacking her this way.”

Despite the gravity of her current situation, Kate del Castillo cheerfully stepped out with another good friend Jillian Barberie on Saturday to have dinner at Mexican restaurant El Coyote in Los Angeles.

When asked by TMZ to comment about the El Chapo scandal, the Muchachitas star said, “You know what? I can’t talk about him.” Barberie then chimed in, “It’s girls night out. We want a little Mexican, a margarita.”

El Chapo, who was recaptured earlier this month, was said to have agreed to the rare interview because he was interested in meeting with Kate del Castillo to discuss plans of making a film about his life.

  • Kate del Castillo: El Chapo Associate Investigated for Money Laundering

Kate del Castillo, actress and known associate of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, is under investigation for suspected money laundering in Mexico. A Mexican government official confirmed the investigation to CNN.

A dual citizen of both Mexico and the United States, Kate del Castillo has been called to give a statement to investigators but thus far hasn’t been charged with a crime.

The investigation into the actress is twofold. Links to El Chapo–Joaquin Guzman–are one part. The other involves her tequila–Honor Del Castillo. Investigators are checking to see if drug money helped fund her business.

Attorney General Arely Gomez said in a recent interview with El Universal that they believe there are connections between the drug money and Kate del Castillo’s boutique tequila business. They have yet to find proof, however.

“Even where there are indications, we need legal certainty,” Gomez said.

Comments between El Chapo and Kate del Castillo are under scrutiny, with investigators seeking comments including “we’re in business” and “we’re in this together,” Gomez added.

Kate del Castillo was with actor Sean Penn during his El Chapo interview for Rolling Stone magazine. She brokered the meeting, saying she wanted to make a movie out of Guzman’s story. She isn’t being investigated for the movie angle, however.

“We have an investigation into the tequila angle; we are not investigating her plans to make a movie,” Gomez told El Universal. “Our investigation is focused.”

The actress recently thanked her supporters via social media.
