  • Junior Seau: Drugs Were Not Involved In Suicide

Junior Seau, the 43-year old former NFL linebacker who shot himself in the chest in May, apparently only had traces of a sleep aid in his system when he died.

Autopsy reports show Seau had nothing stronger in his system than the sleep aid–Zolpidem–and faint traces of Naproxen, a common over the counter drug used to help ease arthritis. His death has now officially been ruled a suicide.

“No alcohol, common drugs of abuse or medication were detected,” read the report. “Based on the autopsy findings and the circumstances surrounding the death as currently understood, the cause of death is perforating gunshot of chest and the manner of death is suicide.”

Officials weren’t immediately sure what to make of Seau’s death when the investigation began, as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest is a rare form of suicide. His family said they suspected nothing was amiss when talking to him in the days and hours leading up to his death, and Seau’s mother seemed to think an outside party had been involved, telling responding officers she didn’t “understand who would do this” to her son.

Seau left no note explaining his actions. His family has donated parts of his brain to scientific research.

  • Junior Seau Dead At 43: Twitter Reacts

Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead at his home yesterday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. At just 43 years old, he left behind a football legacy as well as three children, who say they had just spoken to him not long before his death and didn’t sense that anything was wrong.

Such a brutal death of a man with seemingly so much to live for has hit fans and friends hard, especially after seeing his family at a press conference held outside his home yesterday. The tragic circumstances were enough to devastate anyone, but Seau’s mother was especially stricken, sobbing as she addressed the crowd which had gathered there. • Junior Seau Dead Of Apparent Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Sad news for the sports world today, as former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest today.

Seau had a remarkable 20-year career with the NFL, playing for three teams–San Diego, Miami, and New England–and going to the Pro-Bowl a dozen times. He was inducted into the Chargers’ Hall Of Fame in 2011 at just 42 years old.

Seau has three children with his ex-wife, and all four of them received a text from him yesterday that said simply, “I love you”, but none of them suspected anything was amiss or that he was in emotional distress. Details are still emerging and police are at Seau’s home, where his family has just arrived. A reporter from TMZ is on the scene and says that his mother is understandably distraught and had to be physically helped away by police.

Seau’s mother said during the press conference that she “doesn’t understand who would do this to my son”, leading the media to believe she thinks it was not a suicide. The police officer who led the press conference said they found a handgun beside Seau when they arrived and attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. They were called to Seau’s home by his girlfriend, but reporters on the scene can’t get an answer from officials about her whereabouts now.

TMZ is streaming a police news conference about the athlete’s death live on their site at this hour.
