  • Josh Hamilton Scratched Again For The Angels

The Los Angeles Angels will have to face the Cleveland Indians in a makeup game this afternoon without their All-Star outfielder. Josh Hamilton’s ailing right shoulder will keep the slugger out of the starting lineup at least another day. Collin Cowgill replaced Hamilton in left field.

This will be Hamilton’s fourth straight day on the bench. However, there are signs that the slugger is feeling better. He took batting practice on Sunday and was originally scheduled to play, however, he was scratched with shoulder stiffness an hour before the game.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Hamilton, “He feels much better today and hopefully that will continue tomorrow. He’s still day to day, and we’ll see where he is tomorrow.”

The outfielder did receive a cortisone shot to help with the injury. However, the Angles are not going to rush Hamilton back into the lineup. The Halos currently sit atop the American League West with a comfortable seven game lead with only 20 games left to play. They are also 8-2 over their last ten games and have won four in a row.

The injury-prone slugger is currently hitting .263 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs. He has played in only 88 games this season. Hamilton was on the disabled list from April 9 to June 3 with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.

The Angels will head to Arlington next to face the Texas Rangers in a three-game series. The Rangers are having an abysmal season with a 54-89 record. The team announced on Friday that long-time manager Ron Washington, who took Texas to two World Series, was resigning for personal reasons.

  • Josh Hamilton Won’t Say If He Uses Chewing Tobacco

Josh Hamilton’s struggles with substance abuse are well documented. That’s why everybody is interested in claims that the Los Angeles Angel’s player has turned to chewing tobacco.

Hamilton was asked last week if he used chewing tobacco, but the player wouldn’t confirm or deny the rumors:

“I just don’t have any comments on it. It’s one of those things where if I give you guys any kind of story, your story’s going to be different from his story, and his story is going to be different from his story. And then other people who aren’t in this clubhouse with you guys are going to take your story, and it’s going to be an absolute mess. No, nothing is coming from these lips.”

If you recall, Hamilton was once suspended from the MLB for three years in 2003 after it was revealed that he had an addiction to cocaine and alcohol. Ever since, every little story concerning a possible relapse or the use of any other “drug” has made headlines as people search for any news on the player’s potential vices.

The story is also especially interesting to baseball fans as Hamilton’s last foray with chewing tobacco may have led to his team at the time – the Texas Rangers – losing out on the division title against the Oakland Athletics. Dropping tobacco reportedly led to vision problems as he compensated for the loss of nicotine with excessive caffeine. Fans may be concerned that a similar situation may occur this year if he has picked up chewing tobacco again and then decides to drop it before an important game.

In other news, the Los Angeles Angels will be taking on the Boston Red Sox tonight. Watch out for Hamilton to see for yourself if he’s chewing tobacco or not, because he isn’t going to say either way.

  • Josh Hamilton Hit 4 Home Runs In One Game

Josh Hamilton Hit 4 Home Runs In One Game

Last night Josh Hamilton became the 18th player in the 137 year history of Major League Baseball to hit 4 home runs in a single game. He hit two-run homers in the first, third and seventh innings and added another in the eighth. He also doubled to take his night to 5 for 5 with 8 RBI’s. In doing this he also set the American League record for number of overall bases in a game with 18. Not too shabby for a guy with a past littered with drugs and alcohol.

Hamilton has some serious demons. He battles addiction nearly every day, it’s one of the scariest parts about who he is as a person and as an athlete. Many around baseball see him as a risk, but he is one of the most talented players in the game. He does have the tendency to relapse because he is human, he admitted that he drank again over the winter. But he wants to be a better person, he wants to make his fans proud, and if they give him a chance, he will show up and give them a show. Last night is a perfect example.

Hamilton hit the home runs and basically showed up the entire franchise of the Baltimore Orioles with his exhibition of dominance. This has not been a good year for the Orioles in terms of embarrassing stories. At 19-11 they are 1 game back from having the best record in baseball, but they also lost to a community college team in spring training. Add this to the mix and i’m sure that they aren’t too proud, but if they make the playoffs for the first time since the whole Jeffery Maier, Indians futility of the 1996-1997 seasons, they will look back on all of this and laugh.

  • Josh Hamilton’s Relapse Becomes A Trending Topic

While you cannot deny the monetary rewards professional athletes command, it’s important to remember these folks, for all the money they make, give up just about every bit of privacy to such a degree, it’s actually hard to fathom.

Take Josh Hamilton, for instance. The Texas Ranger, who is also a previous American League MVP award winner, has struggled with substance addiction for some time now. He famously fell off his sobriety wagon in grand style, thanks to the “we don’t care who we offend” style of Deadspin. A little under three years since Hamilton’s last relapse, reports are the Rangers slugger has once again fallen off the wagon.

Thankfully, we’re spared from another embarrassing photo gallery — one that was sent to various publications without the consent of Hamilton, mind you — however, Hamilton’s latest bout with alcohol has once again places him at the forefront of today’s Internet trends. Man, can’t a guy have a drink in peace without it becoming a nationwide trend?

The “nationwide” is not hyperbole. As of this writing, Hamilton’s latest fall from sobriety is the top trend on Google and an incredible popular trend on Twitter. As an example, there have been over 400 responses to the Josh Hamilton Twitter trend since that particular tab was opened in preparation for this article. As you can see in the upcoming screenshot, Hamilton’s relapse exploded across Google Search as well:

While most will say such exposure comes with the territory of being a professional athlete, I respond with a “really?” Just because you make a lot of money playing a sport means your personal life is fair game for everyone to pick over like vultures to carrion? Not that I’m trying to champion Hamilton, either. My concern is with the perception that it’s our right to revel in the failures of others, which is true. I suppose hoping for the higher ground is too much to ask for, especially when it comes to professional athletes.

It should be noted that, by and large, the Twitter reaction towards Hamilton was one of support:
