  • Sarah Silverman: “I Smile Back” Required Trip Back Into Childhood of Depression, Abuse

Sarah Silverman stars as Laney in the new film I Smile Back that opened nationwide on Friday. Known for her stand-up comedy, she admits it’s often hard to convince a director she can play a role. This one was a perfect fit. Looking back into her childhood of depression and abuse, Sarah Silverman discovered she had a lot in common with Laney.

Laney is a suburban mother who is put together on the outside but falling apart from within. Addled with a past that includes addiction, depression, and adultery, she begins a slow unraveling that isn’t completely foreign to Sarah Silverman.

Silverman was depressed as a child. Growing up in New Hampshire, she was depressed. By age 14, she took Xanax four times a day.

“I was kind of numb, I guess,” she said in a recent interview with the L.A. Times. “It didn’t fix me in any way.”

Silverman shared how one of her psychiatrists hanged himself and that she was informed of his death by a hypnotist her parents hired to curb her bed-wetting. She admits she drew on these complexities to play the role of Laney, and that this is among the deeper roles she has ever played.

“I don’t have easy access to my emotions,” she admitted. “They’re very tightly packed and compartmentalized. But for this part, they had to be on the surface. A really big director I admire told me once, ‘You’re really good, but I’ll never cast you in anything because you’re Sarah Silverman. People are too familiar with you. You’re like a personality. I need actors that people can get lost in.’ I couldn’t argue with him [she fake pouts] other than give me a chance.”

Adam Salky is the director of I Smile Back. He watched her play an overbearing girlfriend in School of Rock as well as an alcoholic in Take This Waltz. He knew Sarah Silverman had the instincts of a woman in turmoil from reading her autobiography, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee.

“Sarah has a pool of emotional and intellectual depth,” he said. “You put the camera on her and let it run.”

Even if you’re not a fan of Sarah Silverman’s comedy–it’s laced with four-letter words and can be quite dark and raunchy–don’t count her out for a deep, serious role in I Smile Back.

It sounds like this film has the power to redefine Sarah Silverman.

In addition to Sarah Silverman, I Smile Back stars Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Thomas Sadoski, Terry Kinney, and Skylar Gaertner.

  • Julianna Margulies Dishes on Her Emmy Award, Josh Charles, and Vices

Julianna Margulies Dishes on Her Emmy Award, Josh Charles, and Vices

Julianna Margulies, who stars as lawyer Alicia Florrick on CBS’s The Good Wife, spoke with People recently and shared “one last thing.”

The 48-year-old Emmy-winner said she’s not someone who spends a lot of time resting on her laurels. In fact, Margulies said the attention makes her a little too uncomfortable.

She told People the last time she looked at her Emmy Award was “when I was doing the press rounds after I won.

“I haven’t really seen it much since then,” she admitted. “I was embarrassed by the attention. I wanted to deflect it. It was too much!”

It was quite the shocker for The Good Wife fans when Josh Charles‘ character, Will, was killed off last season. Margulies said the last time she told her former co-star she missed him was just before Labor Day weekend.

“I was sitting in court, and one of our recurring judges, Brooks, makes me laugh so hard. I’ll never say his last name [Ashmanskas] right; he’s a friend of Josh’s. I was texting Josh saying, ‘I miss you so much, I can’t believe you’re not here laughing with me right now,’” she recalled.

Margulies said that last advice she was given came from her parents, who told her, “Honey, you must rest.”

It seems the actress does try to take some time for some rest and relaxation and enjoys indulging with family and friends.

“This past weekend we had some friends up at our house [with husband Keith Lieberthal] in the country,” she said. “I cooked a huge steak dinner, and we had the best red wine. I don’t regret it.’

Meanwhile, Margulies made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and performed a hilarious skit with the late night host. The duo channeled their best high school administrator personas and presented “Monday Morning Announcements.”

  • Julianna Margulies Talks ‘The Good Wife’ Shocker

Julianna Margulies kept quite a secret from fans of The Good Wife. It seems she knew for quite some time about the killing off of Will Gardner (played by Josh Charles) on the most recent episode of the award winning show on Sunday night. The show’s creators Robert and Michelle King kept Margulies apprised from the very beginning about their plan.

“They are so respectful, they ran it by me first before bringing it to the Network, and Josh and I both thought it was a brilliant idea,” Margulies wrote on The Good Wife’s Facebook page, where she also answered many dismayed and shocked fan’s questions following Will Gardner’s shooting death.

Robert and Michelle King also shared their sentiments via Facebook in a letter written to the show’s–and Josh Charles’s character’s–fans following Sunday night’s shocking episode of The Good Wife.

Julianna Margulies was asked if Alicia Florrick will ever find love again now that Will Gardner is dead.

“I hope so, don’t we all wish that for anyone who has lost a love in their life? That being said, it will take a long time,” she answered.

She was also asked what might come next for Alicia Florrick and her husband–played by Chris Noth.

“Watch, the episode following next week, Alicia comes up with the answer for her and Peter,” she replied.

One of the most fun questions Julianna Margulies was asked was whether George Clooney or Josh Charles was more fun to play love scenes with. Her answer to this one was very diplomatic.

“I got lucky two times!!” she said.

  • Juliana Margulies Live Chats on ‘Good Wife’ Shocker

The Good Wife‘s Juliana Margulies hosted a live chat on Facebook Monday after the craziness resulting from the shocking death of Josh Charles‘ character, Will Gardner, on Sunday’s episode.

Margulies announced her intentions to chat via Facebook at 11 a.m. Monday with a sign that read, “Join me for a Facebook chat in one hour.” Literally thousands of fans posted their questions and shared their shock and grief over the surprising episode.

Margulies told Facebook fans she’s known about plans to kill off Will for more than a year.

“I have known this for close to a year,” said Margulies. “Josh was going to leave at the end of last season, and I was so sad about it. I begged him to stay and then asked the writers if they would be open to writing for him for 15 episodes, and somehow everyone agreed!”

Margulies said she will miss her friend and colleague.

“You can’t imagine how sad we all are to lose Josh, but we have been living with this a lot longer then the audience so it’s not as harsh for us at this moment,” said Margulies. “Josh is one of the best actors I have ever worked with and I will miss him every day. But his death makes the character of Alicia have to move in a different direction and that is very exciting.”

Margulies told fans to enjoy the coming episodes of the show and wait to see what the death will mean to the storyline.

“Thank you so much! The show will miss Will’s character but if you hang in there, I think people will ultimately be happy,” she posted. “It will be a springboard for Alicia to figure out what to do with her life, suddenly everything seems numb and without purpose. She reevaluates everything.”

With the death of Will, the show is likely to have big changes in the future. Margulies confirms those changes.

“I love these writers. They are amazing at keeping us all on our toes and I trust the direction will be the right direction,” she said in response to a question by a Facebook fan. “Aliciia is in for a big change.”

She added in another reply: “Oh boy, it gets pretty sad, but then she will bounce back to warrior mode so keep watching.”

According to Margulies, fans are in for an emotional ride on the next episode.

“I really encourage you to watch this coming Sunday’s episode,” she posted. “You will see what she really thinks about Will. And bring tissues.”

  • The Good Wife: Will’s Dead, What Now?

The Good Wife, CBS’ standout legal drama gave the audience a shock Sunday with the killing off of lead character Will. The character has played an important part of the show; he’s a partner at the Lockhart Gardner law firm (which is where most of the action is based off of) as well as a love interest to Julianna Margulies’ character Alicia Florrick.

The episode seemed to begin normally. Will was working on a case, and got an epiphany to turn the case around in normal legal drama show fashion. For some reason, his defendant apparently gunned down his lawyer after staring at the gun in the balliff’s holster because immediately after that scene watchers heard shots and screams– and saw Will lying on the ground covered in blood.

As you can see, the audience had a strong reaction to the shocking incident. What made that happen? Did someone want a pay increase and the writers decided that it was time to shoot him off? Is it going to be one of those “It Was All A Dream” doohickeys that could very well signal a series jumping the shark?

No, Josh Charles was simply over it. He explains in an interview: “Creatively, I was just ready to move on to the next chapter…you just kind of know sometimes when you’re ready to move on to new experiences…” So the writers decided to let him go out with a bang. Literally. The show has apparently planned some new developments to keep watchers satisfied, but only time will tell if they truly do. Who watches the show? Will you still tune in? Let us know.
