Meryl Streeps Faces Backlash After Commenting ‘We’re All Africans Really’

Meryl Streep dismissed questions about the all-white panel at the Berlin Film Festival Thursday by commenting that “we’re all Africans really,” which has ignited a furor on the internet.

According to CBS News, Streep, who heads up a seven-member jury, said she was committed to equality and inclusion “of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions.”

“This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions,” Streep said. “So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”

In response to a question asking whether she understood films from the Arab world and North Africa, Streep said that while she didn’t know much about the region, “I’ve played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures.”

“There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all we’re all from Africa originally,” she said. “Berliners, we’re all Africans really.”

Social media posts were strewn with expressions of disbelief and anger over Streeps’ comments.

The festival opens Thursday with the jury’s other members, German actor Lars Eidinger, British film critic Nick James, French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, British actor Clive Owen, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher and Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska, deciding who goes home with the coveted Golden Bear.

The Coen brothers’ comedy “Hail, Caesar!” starring George Clooney, Josh Brolin and a slew of other A-list celebrities kicked off the festival on Thursday.

  • Kathryn Boyd Engaged To Former Boss Josh Brolin

Kathryn Boyd and actor Josh Brolin are reportedly engaged, and Brolin says he’s the happiest he’s ever been.

Boyd, who was at one time Brolin’s personal assistant, began dating Josh in early 2013 after his split from actress Diane Lane, and the couple were spotted in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico soon after with a group of friends and family as they celebrated the occasion.

“They were with two tables worth of people so it was a big group, more than eight people. They had a fixed menu and it seemed like they were celebrating something… It looked like a party and it seemed celebratory,” a source told Us Weekly.

Josh told USA Today recently that he’s in a very happy place following a rough patch that included his divorce and several altercations, one of which led to his arrest in Santa Monica. After reportedly attending rehab, the actor said in the interview that he was ready to put his past behind him.

“There was one point where it wasn’t boring. I grew up that way,” he said of his legal battles. “But if (you) continue doing that same thing, you’re that guy. That’s your identity. I have my own. I know other people who have that stamp, and I’m bored by them….I’m in a totally different space. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, other than having my kids. I wake up in the morning and I’m actually happy,” Brolin said.

Brolin said that attending rehab helped him see things more clearly.

“It made me think of a lot of things. My mom dying when I was in my 20s. All the impact that had on me that I hadn’t moved past; I was always such a momma’s boy. But I realized that I was on a destructive path. I knew that I had to change and mature. It was like I stepped back and saw the hamster wheel.”

This will be the third marriage for Brolin, who has two children with first wife Alison Adair. He was also engaged to actress Minnie Driver, but the couple called it quits before the big day.

  • Josh Brolin Opens Up About Heroin Use

Josh Brolin Opens Up About Heroin Use

On New Year’s Day 2013, actor Josh Brolin was pulled over and arrested for drunk-driving, and in November of that year he checked himself into rehab.

Clearly, the 46 year old was having some major personal problems then, and the bad times seemed to peak for him after his marriage to actor Diane Lane crumbled.

In an interview with The Guardian, Brolin said he always had addiction problems, and even tried hard drugs at one point. “I tried heroin,” he said. “That sounds so horrible when you put it like that. But yeah, I tried heroin.”

“I mean, I never got into it and never died from it,” Brolin added, “Which is a good thing. I’ve had 19 friends who died. Most of those guys I grew up with, they’re all dead now.”

In addition, the American Gangster actor said his desire to have multiple adventures throughout his life led to his past drinking and drug problems, but now he sees things differently, and chooses to be more imaginative when it comes to seeking out new challenges.

It’s all about keeping himself out of trouble these days, he says.

“I used to think you should try to deconstruct everything. Experience everything. Just get yourself out there,” said Brolin. “But I don’t believe that any more. Having adventures is all very well, but an imagination can make up for all that. That’s the more intelligent way to be, and it keeps you out of harm’s way.”

And believe it or not, the actor who usually plays a lot of tough-guy roles is really a mama’s boy, and that had something to do with his marriage ending, he explained.

But after having a very tumultuous 2013, Brolin said he was able to take a step back and get a good look at both himself and his destructive actions– and now he sees things much more clearly.

“[The divorce] was another turning point,” he said. “It made me think a lot of things. My mom dying when I was in my 20s. All the impact that had on me that I hadn’t moved past; I was always such a mama’s boy.”

  • Ke$ha’s in Rehab But She’s Not Alone

Ke$ha’s in Rehab But She’s Not Alone

For some, New Year’s resolutions are small, like trying to be kinder or trying to eat out less, but for others, their goal for the new year may involve a bigger challenge, like trying to stay sober or getting professional help. And it’s the same thing for celebrities. Some may want to play a particular role in a movie and others may want to have a successful stint at rehab. But who are some of these celebrities and which ones decided they really needed help last year? To find out we put together a list, which seems even more relevant now since the singer Ke$ha entered a rehab facility this week.

Chris Brown– It’s hard to play the bad boy roll without it taking some kind of toll on your personal life, which seems to be the case with R&B star Chris Brown–who seems to be in constant trouble ever since being arrested for domestic violence a few years ago. Back in October of 2013, Brown checked himself into rehab after punching a guy in Washington D.C, so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s able to pull himself together and turn things around in 2014. Sadly for Brown, his stay at rehab was extended after he broke his mom’s car window.

Zac Efron– In September of of last year, TMZ revealed that actor Zach Efron checked himself into rehab for cocaine use. And according to an inside source for the gossip site, he left for rehab while filming the movie “The Neighbors,” starring Seth Rogen. “It was common knowledge he was struggling with cocaine,” said the insider. The year 2014 will be the year that things can either go North or further South for Efron, as he tries to get his career back on track.

Josh Brolin– Respected actor and ex-husband of Hollywood star Diane Lane checked into rehab in November of last year, after having some very public run-ins with the police and a bar bouncer. After these episodes, Brolin said he wouldn’t drink anymore, but he was unsuccessful, and that’s when he decided to get professional help. With Brolin being such a great actor and a well-known talent, it would be a wasteful shame if he didn’t pull it together this year.

Lindsay Lohan– For the past few years, it’s hard to think about Lindsay Lohan without thinking of drug use, arrests and rehab–and 2013 didn’t seem to change that at all. In May of last year the 27-year old entered the Betty Ford Center after receiving a court order to enter another rehab clinic called Morningside Recovery. Reportedly, Lohan chose Betty Ford because she was more familiar with the staff and felt it was a better facility all around. Fortunately, the “Mean Girls” actor started looking much healthier as 2013 was ending, which could be a sign that she’s on her way to turning her negative image around.

  • Diane Lane and Josh Brolin Are Officially Divorced

Diane Lane and Josh Brolin, who once epitomized the quintessential Hollywood power couple, will no longer be called a power couple. According to documents that were filed on November 27, 2013, in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the divorce has now been finalized. This marks the second divorce for Lane (her first marriage was to Christopher Lambert) as well as Brolin, who was previously married to Alice Adair. The couple separated earlier in the year, which surprised many fans who thought that the eight-year union was a solid marriage.

An undisclosed source who is close to the couple spoke with People toward the beginning of the year. “They’ve been separated for several months. This was a hard decision for both of them to make. The relationship just ran its course.” The relationship that began in 2002 through an introduction initiated by Barbara Streisand was cemented with a marriage in 2004.

Forty-eight-year-old Diane Lane reportedly had “Brolin” removed from her legal name. However, there appears to be no hard feelings. Forty-five-year-old Josh Brolin is adjusting well to the divorce and is still on friendly terms with his ex-wife. According to his father, James Brolin, the relationship ended under mutually-amiable terms. “He’s great. You know, everything is mutual. It’s all okay,” James said.

A close source spoke with Us Weekly, and echoed sentiments expressed by James Brolin. “It was a mutual decision. It is very amicable. It’s not ugly, it’s just over,” the source said.

Lane claimed that Brolin struck her, but the actress never pressed charges. Brolin is currently in rehab after several drunken incidents that included a bar fight in Santa Monica in early November and a public intoxication arrest in Shreveport, Louisiana in January, 2013.

Diane Lane, Josh Brolin Divorce Finalized

Actress Diane Lane and Josh Brolin have officially made it to Splitsville. According to ABC News, the final steps in their divorce proceedings were complete after the court approved a ‘stipulated judgement’. The papers were officially filed on Nov. 27.

After 8 years of marriage, the “Unfaithful” actress filed for divorce from Brolin back in February. However, unlike most divorces, Lane and Brolin did not part on bad terms. It has also been reported that the divorce proceeding went on with little complication. An inside source close to the couple informed E! This is the second divorce for both Lane and Brolin. Lane’s first marriage to actor Christopher Lambert lasted six years from 1988 to 1994. Brolin was ironically married to actress Alice Adair during the same exact time. The two had no children together. However, Lane has a daughter, Eleanor, from her previous marriage to Lambert. The “Gangster Squad” actor also has two children, Trevor and Eden, from his previous marriage to Adair.

Determined not to wallow in the throes of divorce, Lane is directing her full focus to her career. The 48-year-old actress is currently preparing for her latest film, “Batman vs. Superman” with Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. Brolin is currently focused on more personal issues as he recently checked into a rehabilitation center.

Earlier this year, Brolin revealed his drug usage as a teenager. He also shared that he was once part of a surf gang known as the Cito Rats. Brolin explained that they use to steal car parts to afford ‘drums and drugs.’ “I was the last [gang member] to get into heroin—I smoked it and the first to get out. I was around 16 or 17, so it was around the time of The Goonies,” Brolin explained. “But I liked working and learning, so it was very difficult for me to lend myself to that drug completely.”

However, it has not been confirmed whether drugs were partially to blame for the divorce. No details of their divorce settlement have been released either.

  • Diane Lane Is Officially Divorced

    Diane Lane Is Officially Divorced

After eight long years of marriage, Diane Lane and Josh Brolin are officially divorced. Lane filed for divorce in February and cited the reason as “irreconcilable differences”. Court records that were filed on November 27 made the divorce final, so it looks like the couple will be ringing in the New Year single!

“Diane Lane and Josh Brolin have decided to end their marriage,” their rep confirmed in February.

The Man of Steel star has also decided to change her last name back to her maiden name. Since her marriage in 2004, Lane had been going by Diane Lane Brolin, however she has changed it to just Diane Lane, dropping her now ex-husband’s name. Brolin’s father, James Brolin, and another source say that the decision to end their marriage was mutual. “He’s great,” James said. “You know, everything is mutual. It’s all okay.” “It was a mutual decision, the source said. “It is very amicable. It’s not ugly, it’s just over.”

It seems as though their relationship has been rocky from the start. Just four months after they were married, Brolin was arrested for spousal battery. Lane claimed that Brolin hit her, but never pressed charges against him. In November, Brolin checked into a rehab facility, for substance abuse after a series of public altercations, where he is currently residing.

  • Josh Brolin Involved In Two Halloween Brawls

Josh Brolin is an Oscar-nominated actor and has two films coming out soon, and it’s possible that the stress of the job is getting to him. The 45-year old star of “Oldboy” was involved in not one, but two fights on Halloween, and they were both caught on camera.

Brolin reportedly exchanged words with a cab driver at the drive-thru of a taco joint in L.A. around midnight after a minor accident, and can be heard yelling at the man on video that two passengers were taking in the backseat.

“You suck as a cab driver!” Brolin yells.

  • Josh Brolin Or Ryan Gosling Could Be The Next Batman

Comic-Con recently made millions of nerd dreams come true as it was revealed that Batman and Superman will team up on the big screen in 2015. While Brit heartthrob Henry Cavill is already set to play the man of steel, it is still up in the air who will take on the role of Batman.

Casting the caped crusader is a big deal, especially when it sets the chosen actor up for a possible career-defining role, or at least one that will bring them millions of dollars. So who is being considered to take their place on the Batman Mouth Rushmore alongside Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale?

Early reports are far from definite, but four possibilities are sure to create excitement among fans of the superhero, or movies in general. Josh Brolin is one such name on the list, which also includes indie darling and general good looking guy Ryan Gosling.

Gosling, who is one of the youngest candidates, has the acting chops to pull of the role, but those behind the scenes want a Batman around 40 while Gosling is only 32. The new Batman is also meant to be a more mature, rugged character, not that Gosling couldn’t pull that look off.

Other actors rumored to be on the list are True Blood Adonis Joe Manganiello, who “Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder considered for the role of Superman, and Richard Armitage, who was most recently seen on the silver screen protecting Bilbo Baggins in the role of Thorin in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”.

Whoever is chosen to take the reins of Wayne Manor will see their star take a meteoric rise, even if they are someone the caliber of Brolin or Gosling. For those like Manganiello and Armitage, it could take them to the next level. We’ll see who is handed the keys to the Batmobile in the coming months as more details about the casting move surface.

  • Oldboy Remake Delayed to November

One decade ago, Korean director Park Chan-wook released his movie adaptation of the Garon Tsuchiya manga Oldboy. The revenge movie was heavily praised and has since become a cult classic.

So, when it was announced that Spike Lee would be directing and American version of Oldboy, fans were skeptical. They still are, due to fears that the story’s mature themes will be toned down for a general American audience. A recently released red band trailer has only added to the confusion by teasing some significant changes to the story.

Now, Exhibitor Relations has changed the release date for Spike Lee’s version of Oldboy from its original October 25 all the way back to November 27.

There is no word from Lee’s production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, on why the movie’s release was delayed. November 27 is the day before Thanksgiving in the U.S. Oldboy will now be competing against Disney’s Frozen and the Jason Statham/James Franco action movie Homefront. The expected big-hitters of the early holiday season, Ender’s Game, Thor: The Dark World, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, are all coming earlier in November.
