  • Joe Jackson, 87-Year-Old Father of the Late Michael Jackson, Suffers Stroke in Brazil

Joe Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson and head of the musical family from which The Jackson Five and Janet Jackson hail, suffered a stroke while on vacation celebrating his 87th birthday in Brazil.

Sunday was Joe Jackson’s 87th birthday, however local sources tell CBS News that he was already hospitalized by then, and unable to attend his own party.

CBS also reports that they received an emailed statement early on Monday from the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo. It simply states that Joe Jackson is in fact a patient there, in the intensive care unit. It says he was admitted Sunday and is suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

It’s uncertain which–if any–of Joe Jackson’s family members are with the patriarch in Brazil. Wife Katherine Jackson has custody of Michael Jackson’s children–Prince, Blanket, and Paris Jackson. A short time after Michael died, it was reported that although Katherine and Joe Jackson are still married, they hadn’t lived together in years.

Surely more information will soon be released to media sources regarding Joe Jackson’s condition. Photos on his website posted prior to his stroke show him enjoying his getaway to Brazil.

  • Joe Jackson: Stroke Was “Mild”, Expected To Recover

Joe Jackson, father of Janet and the late Michael Jackson, suffered what is being called a “mild” stroke yesterday morning. He is currently being treated in a Las Vegas hospital but is expected to be released later today.

Jackson, 83, has had two other strokes in recent years but is said to be in good spirits and is resting. His family happened to be with him at the time and were able to get him medical treatment quickly.

The legendary matriarch of the Jackson family is still actively working in Vegas, where he is a business developer and promoter. He managed the careers of his children for years, helping the Jackson 5 to become a force to be reckoned with in the ’70s.

Jackson’s reputation became tarnished in the ’80s when allegations of physical abuse began to trickle out from his children, who said he was extremely strict with them while they were developing their musical careers and would often threaten them with beatings during rehearsals if things didn’t go the way he thought they should. Michael Jackson, however, said on at least one occasion that his father’s strict personality was one of the reasons he became so successful.
