  • Jane Fonda Makes List of “Worst Dressed” at Golden Globes

Jane Fonda was among those making E! News’s “worst dressed” list at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Normally donning something classy and tasteful, she would have earned marks for being smartly dressed, had she not covered her entire upper half with something akin to a sea creature.

E! News describes the anomaly as a “cupcake” or a “clam shell,” but neither truly describes the atrocity that swallowed Jane Fonda’s gown whole.

Perez Hilton may have described Jane Fonda’s dress best, saying she “drowns in ruffles” on the Golden Globes red carpet.

    Then there was this description.

At least Jane was in good company. Others making the E! News “worst dressed” list include Rooney Mara for her tattered lace, Amanda Peet for her washed out nude gown, Maggie Gyllenhaal for her floral print with sequins and that strange flower on her shoulder, and Regina King, whose gown was bad enough, but that cape was the icing on the cake.

Jane Fonda also made news at the Golden Globes for the look on her face when Jonah Hill dressed up as the bear from The Revenant.

What’s your take on Jane Fonda’s Golden Globes gown?

What did you think of Jonah Hill’s humor? Was it almost as outrageous?

  • Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence in Film to Go to Jane Fonda

The Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence in Film is slated to go to Jane Fonda this year.

The award is part of the Santa Barbara Film Festival and will be presented to Fonda at a black-tie gala dinner at Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara on Oct. 3.

Jane Fonda is an obvious choice for the Kirk Douglas Award. She won two Best Actress Oscars for her work in Klute and Coming Home. Her current work includes Grace and Frankie on Netflix and the upcoming Fox Searchlight’s Youth, directed by Paolo Sorrentino.

Since 2006, the Kirk Douglas Award has been handed to a lifelong contributor to cinema through their, whether it be in front or behind the camera. Past honorees include Jessica Lange, Forest Whitaker, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Quentin Tarantino, Ed Harris and John Travolta.

“Jane Fonda obviously has the right genes. Her acting performances set a standard that’s hard to follow,” Kirk Douglas, the award’s original recipient said in a statement issued by the festival.

The gala supports educational and community programs hosted by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which will take place from Feb. 3 through Feb. 13.

  • J.K. Rowling Calls Out ‘Idiot’ on Twitter for Serena Williams Diss

J.K. Rowling Calls Out ‘Idiot’ on Twitter for Serena Williams Diss

J.K. Rowling is a tennis fan. When the famed author of “Harry Potter” took to Twitter on Saturday to express her love for Serena Williams, many agreed with her.

    Rowling tweeted:

#SerenaSlam! I love her. What an athlete, what a role model, what a woman!

While there were some on Twitter who were not quite as effusive in their praise of Serena Williams, there was a generally civil discussion of her merits.

But the headline-grabbing moment came when one user, based in the UK, challenged Rowling’s opinion of Williams.

    Rowling’s retribution was swift.

Fans of J.K. Rowling and Serena Williams alike took to their own Twitter handles to excoriate the fellow.

In the hours since, the fellow has spat comebacks on his own Twitter account.

The fellow, whose identity we will not go into digging up, may be enjoying his 15 minutes of reflected fame, or he may wish he had kept his mouth shut. One thing is for sure, it is tough to express oneself eloquently in a few characters and without much aforethought.

This little tempest in a teapot is happening in an atmosphere in which women are speaking out about the unfairness of being judged primarily on looks.

Amy Schumer recently remarked, “For women, we’re taught to eat less until we disappear. And trained to believe that if you don’t look like everyone else, then you’re unlovable. And men are not trained that way. Men can look like whatever and still date a supermodel.”

And Jane Fonda also observed, “The perception of men as they get older is vastly different from women. Men are seen as becoming elegant and more desirable, whereas women are seen as having lost their beauty and attractiveness. It’s as if we become devalued because only our beauty defines us.”

Even if this fellow meant something other than was received by most observers, it’s a bad time to throw thoughtless comments. Women have put up with thoughtless comments and outright discrimination for too long.

  • Jane Fonda Surprised She’s Still Getting Roles

Jane Fonda is no newcomer to the argument about how women are treated in the film industry. Fonda has been fighting that fight all her career. For a woman who made tremendous amounts of money in a fitness endeavor, Fonda is adamant that looks not be the determiner of a woman’s worth.

“The perception of men as they get older is vastly different from women,” Jane Fonda recently told the Daily Mirror. “Men are seen as becoming elegant and more desirable, whereas women are seen as having lost their beauty and attractiveness. It’s as if we become devalued because only our beauty defines us.”

Fonda is joined in this chorus nowadays by a raft of other actresses who are angry that they are being told they are too old to be paired alongside even far older actors.

“There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time,” Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed in a recent interview. “I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”

Jane Fonda concurs with that finding.

“I’m surprised I’m still getting opportunities because, for women, once you reach 40 or 50 it’s very difficult to find work,” Fonda says.

Many other actresses have come forward, joined by men who see the same discrimination, to point out that the media often reports on what a man is doing, but on what a woman is wearing.

  • Rachel Weisz to Play Real-Life Mercenary in Thriller Film ‘Snatchback’

Rachel Weisz has signed on to star as a real-life mercenary who helps families find their kidnapped children in an upcoming thriller called Snatchback, set to shoot later in 2015.

In addition to starring as Maureen Dabbagh, whose husband kidnapped her daughter back in 1992, Rachel Weisz will also produce the film, alongside Frida Torresblanco of Pan’s Labyrinth fame.

Pete Travis will both write and direct the film.

Snatchback sees Maureen Dabbagh–or Mo, as she is called–find out ‘how far she is willing to go to get her child back. In the years after the kidnapping, she becomes a mercenary engaged in dangerous missions across the Middle East to help other families recover kidnapped children–while never giving up on her own search,’ according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Rachel Weisz is presently featured in two films at the Cannes Film Festival–The Lobster and Youth. The Lobster is a surreal romance set in a future during which singles are expected to find a matching mate within 45 days or be transformed into animals and released into an area known as the Woods. In addition to Rachel Weisz, it stars Colin Farrell, Lea Seydoux, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman, and Michael Smiley.

Youth is about a composer and a film director, vacationing together in the Alps. Both men are contemplating their children’s lives and their own careers. Jane Fonda and Michael Caine star alongside Rachel Weisz in this drama.

Life is certainly full–and no doubt fulfilling–right now for Rachel Weisz. She’s come a long way from her role in The Mummy, and it certainly looks like her future is very bright.

  • Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda Aren’t Happy About ‘Grace & Frankie’ Pay

Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda Aren’t Happy About ‘Grace & Frankie’ Pay

In the new Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda star as two women who “form an unlikely bond after their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other.”

The show is called Grace and Frankie, and Tomlin & Fonda are its main stars. But apparently, the show’s male actors (Sam Waterston and Martin sheen) are getting paid just as much as they are – and this doesn’t exactly sit well with either.

Speaking at a press event before the premiere of the show, Fonda and Tomlin sounded off about a hot button issue as of late – the gender pay gap.

“Lily found out Sam and Martin are getting the same salary that we are,” said Fonda. “That doesn’t make us happy.”

“No. The show is not Sol and Robert — it’s Grace and Frankie,” said Tomlin.

Both Tomlin and Fonda clearly feel as though they should be earning more than their male counterparts, since they are the main focus of the show.

Charlize Theron recently negotiated a deal to be paid as much as her Snow White and the Huntsman co-star Chris Hemsworth.

“‘I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes,” she says. “They did not fight it. And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down. This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing. It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way,” she said.

And Jennifer Lawrence also reportedly won a fight to be paid more for an upcoming film.

All 13 episodes of Grace and Frankie are now available to stream on Netflix. So far, the show has received mixed reviews.

  • Jane Fonda Jumps in Headfirst With Lily Tomlin in New Netflix Show

Jane Fonda is heading right into a Netflix series, hot on the heels of her successful run in Newsroom for Showtime. It is called Frankie and Grace, and it appears on Netflix.

Lily Tomlin plays Frankie to Jane Fonda’s Grace. The series also stars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston as law partners and husbands of the pair of ladies. But the two men come out to their wives as gay and leave them to be together. Frankie and Grace, who have only tolerated each other over the years, are left with only each other.

Jane Fonda talks about the series’ exploration of how real people handle having a huge upset that rocks their lives.

“Like most us, we go along and we’re happy enough, but in the best of all worlds something comes along and jolts us. It’s happened to me in my life and you think you’re going to die because it’s painful and sad when a relationship ends.”

While Jane Fonda may be thought of by some as living in a world of rarified air as the daughter of a tremendously popular actor herself, she admits that she has known heartache and shame. She describes how she had a session with a masseuse after a particularly nasty breakup in which her heart was broken.

“I jumped off the table and burst into tears, feeling I wasn’t worthy to be touched,” Jane Fonda recalled.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin really threw themselves into their roles. One scene in the first episode called for their characters to be high on peyote. Lily Tomlin says the pair actually took peyote as research for the scene.

“Oh, yeah. We just put the preparations in place and then followed them,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

  • Lily Tomlin Cops to Taking Peyote to Prepare for Role

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are in a new Netflix series called Grace and Frankie. The two women are both in their 70s, and this is the first project they have done together since starring in 9 to 5 way back in 1980.

Lily Tomlin plays Frankie to Jane Fonda’s Grace. The series also stars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston as the husbands of the pair of ladies. But the two men come out to their wives as gay and leave them to be together. Frankie and Grace are left with only each other.

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, together with Dolly Parton, broke some new ground when they did 9 to 5. One of the more controversial scenes in the film saw the ladies smoking pot. Now, 35 years later, the first episode of Grace and Frankie sees Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda taking peyote.

And Lily Tomlin says the pair actually took peyote as research for the scene.

“Oh, yeah. We just put the preparations in place and then followed them,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

Jane Fonda has high praise for Lily Tomlin, recalling that she saw her as essential to 9 to 5 back in the day.

“I went to see her in Appearing Nitely on Broadway,” Fonda recalls. “I was already developing 9 to 5, and when I saw her it blew my mind. I thought, ‘I don’t want to make this movie without her.’ I got the idea of including Dolly Parton because I heard her on the radio and thought, ‘Boy, that would be cool.’ Dolly, Lily, Jane. It took me a year to persuade them!”

The women were younger for 9 to 5. Fonda admits that it would be tough for her and Lily Tomlin to make that happen now.

“It’s probably harder [to do] now than it was then. It’s so hard to get a movie done and distributed, especially when you’re older. For older women, it’s mostly about independent movies.”

The Grace and Frankie series hits Netflix on May 8.

  • Rachel Weisz in Two Films Vying for Cannes Film Festival Top Prize

Rachel Weisz has two chances for shining brightly at the Cannes Film Festival next month. The actress stars in La Giovinezza, an Italian-directed film that also stars Jane Fonda and Michael Caine. In addition, Weisz stars in a Greek entry, The Lobster, alongside Colin Farrell.

The star of The Mummy, Rachel Weisz is nothing if not amazingly versatile at her craft. Whether performing in a horror flick, a tear-jerker, or an action film–Weisz is on her game.

Rachel Weisz debuted in the film world back in 1994 in Death Machine, but her breakthrough came two years later when she appeared alongside Morgan Freeman and Keanu Reeves in Chain Reaction. In addition to these films, Weisz has appeared in Eragon, The Lovely Bones, The Bourne Legacy, Oz the Great and Powerful, and several more.

While appearing at Cannes, Rachel Weisz will show two sides to that versatility. La Giovinezza features two old friends vacationing at the foot of the Alps. They ponder about the confusion in their children’s lives and seriously consider their careers.

In The Lobster, Weisz channels her inner sci-fi in a film where single people must find mates within 45 days or they are transformed into animals and released into a life in the woods.

In other Rachel Weisz news, the actress was chosen as one of Variety’s Power of Women honorees. She received the honor for the work she does to help students attain college educations.

“Both my parents were immigrants and it was the most important thing that I go to a good university,” she told Variety.

The Cannes Film Festival entries don’t represent down time for Rachel Weisz. She is presently working on The Light Between Oceans based on the book of the same name by M.L. Stedman.

Do you expect Rachel Weisz and one or both of her films will emerge a big winner at Cannes next month? The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 15 to May 24.

  • Diane Lane On Her Long-Awaited Return to the New York Stage — ‘There Are Wonderful Ghosts Here’

Diane Lane On Her Long-Awaited Return to the New York Stage — ‘There Are Wonderful Ghosts Here’

Diane Lane has returned to a New York stage in a new play by Bathsheba Doran, The Mystery of Love & Sex.

It’s been 37 years since she graced the exact same stage. In 1977, she was in the ensemble of The Cherry Orchard, which starred Raul Julia and Meryl Streep. She was only 12.

“There are wonderful ghosts here, actually,” Diane Lane told the Associated Press. “I feel like I walk past the ghost of myself.”

Diane Lane plays the middle-aged mother of a college-age daughter, who is coming to terms with her own marriage in the shadow of her daughter’s new, budding romance.

Diane Lane, 50, told the Associated Press said her decision to return to the theatre was multi-faceted.

“There were a lot of little things in there that I related to,” she said. “She’s 50. Her daughter’s 21. She has this whole Georgia thing. I lived in Georgia for a long time and that accent is very close to me. I felt like, ‘Oh, there’s enough familiar territory on the table for me to not feel like I’m completely out of orbit.’”

Although her love of theatre runs deep and she longed to return, especially considering her father, Burt Lane, was an acclaimed acting coach, family commitments kept her locked in to the West Coast.

“I moved to L.A. That’s a huge thing,” she said. “When your kid is in school, you’re anchor is out. It’s like, ‘Forget it. Call me in 20 years.’ Leaving your people to do a play is incredibly selfish. Yes, it’s incredibly selfish to do a film as well, but it’s not quite as long and not quite as immersive.”

Diane Lane‘s decision to move to Los Angeles in the 1970s did not necessarily sit well with her dad.

“He was very trepidatious,” said Lane. “He was very worried. He felt like the vampires live out there. He said, ‘They’ll punch in you in face in New York, but they’ll stab you in the back in L.A.’ He was worried. Especially in that era when there was no Internet and no anonymity. Now everyone stabs you in the face.”

Lane is following in the footsteps of some of the actresses she admires most.

“I loved Shirley MacLaine, I loved Vivian Leigh, and I loved Jane Fonda,” she gushed. “Those were my three archetypical types of excellence and self-possession. They possessed a kind of mercurial talent that they themselves were not necessarily even cognizant of. That is what I loved about real actresses that I saw in the theater.”

  • Jane Fonda’s Beau Passed Out At Golden Globes? False Alarm, Folks

Jane Fonda denies claims that her partner, Richard Perry, passed out at last night’s Golden Globes Awards, despite reports.

The Beverly Hills Police Department did confirm that paramedics were called to the awards’ show. However, the call was apparently canceled before the first responders arrived on the scene.

Initial reports claimed that it was the 77-year-old actress’ boyfriend who needed the aid of paramedics. However, a rep for Fonda said it was someone sitting at a table near the couple.

According to reports, the heat in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the 72nd Golden Glove Awards were held, was unbearable, which was likely a factor in the mystery person’s illness.

Theo Kingma, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the ceremony, said the man had been sitting under bright lights, making him hot.

According to Vanity Fair , the air conditioning at the hotel wasn’t on or wasn’t working, sending temperatures in the hall soaring. Matthew McConaughey reportedly chose to remove his jacket as he watched proceedings and female stars were seen fanning themselves as their makeup melted in the heat.

  • Tippi Hedren Mourns Passing of ‘The Birds’ Costar Rod Taylor

Tippi Hedren starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film The Birds alongside critically acclaimed actor Rod Taylor. Taylor died on Wednesday evening of a heart attack. He was 84.

In addition to The Birds, Rod Taylor starred in more than 50 Hollywood films throughout his career. In addition to starring with Tippi Hedren, he appeared on the big screen opposite a number of other Hollywood icons, including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Jane Fonda.

In a statement to People magazine, Tippi Hedren made it quite clear that Rod Taylor was more than just a costar. He was her dear friend.

“There are so many incredible feelings I have for him. Rod was a great pal to me and a real strength, we were very, very good friends,” Hedren, who is 84, said.

“He was one of the most fun people I have ever met, thoughtful and classy, there was everything good in that man,” she added.

Rod Taylor’s family is mourning their loss. He was married to wife Carol for 35 years. He is also survived by his daughter Felicia.

“My dad loved his work. Being an actor was his passion–calling it an honorable art and something he couldn’t live without,” she told People. “He once said, ‘I am a poor student sitting at the feet of giants, yearning for their wisdom and begging for lessons that might one day make me a complete artist, so that if all goes well, I may one day sit beside them.’”

Tippi Hedren, the mother of actress Melanie Griffith, is no doubt just one of many in Hollywood who join Rod Taylor’s family in mourning his passing.

  • Jane Fonda Reveals Mother Was Sexually Abused As a Child

Long-time activist Jane Fonda told an audience of other activists and philanthropists that her mother had been sexually abused as a child, a trauma that may have been a factor leading to the decision to take her own life at the age of 42.

Fonda shared the revelation at the 40th anniversary of the Rape Treatment Center, a renowned center committed to providing treatment for sexual assault victims.

The Oscar-winning actress served as host of The Rape Foundation’s annual fundraising event held this year at billionaire Ron Burkle’s Greenacres estate in Beverly Hills.

The 76-year-old actress said she didn’t acquire the knowledge about her mother first-hand, but came across details of the abuse while doing research for her memoirs. The actress said it was while reviewing her mother’s medical records that she uncovered details of her mother’s abuse, which apparently occurred when she was eight years old.

Fonda was 12 when her mother, Frances Fonda Seymour, committed suicide.

“The minute that I read that, everything fell into place,” Fonda told the audience. “I knew why the promiscuity, the endless plastic surgery, the guilt, the inability to love or be intimate, and I was able to forgive her and forgive myself.”

Fonda promised to “support the Rape Treatment Center for the rest of my life” because sexual violence is “epidemic.”

Fonda’s 9 to 5 co-star and fellow activist, Lily Tomlin, introduced Fonda at the event. Other speakers included David Schwimmer and Eric McCormack, who urged the crowd to support the center. Five attendees, including Burkle, donated $100,000 to support the Rape Treatment Center’s continued efforts to offer free medical, psychological and legal services to victims of sexual assault.

The founder of the Rape Treatment Center and President of The Rape Foundation, Gail Abarbanel, introduced other rape survivors, including the mother of the Steubenville, Ohio High School student, who was assaulted in 2012. Abarbanel praised the girl for her bravery in pressing charges against the star football players accused in the attack, despite overwhelming support for the beloved players by the community.

The Rape Foundation provides other services, including free training for first responders and sexual assault prevention programs across the country.

  • Shirley MacLaine Ignores Psychics’ Tips on Selling Price of Her New Mexico Spiritual Oasis

Anybody in the market for an oasis retreat in New Mexico?

Shirley MacLaine has listed her 7,450-acre spiritual retreat for $18 million, according to Forbes magazine.

The spiritual MacLaine said she listed the property at $18 million for a very specific reason. Although psychics told her to list the ranch for $30 million, she felt more comfortable with $18 million because the number it creates 9 (8+1) is claimed to be the number for completion.

Apparently Maclaine felt the value of completion was more important than the value of money.

MacLaine told the Wall Street Journal she is selling the secluded property to be closer to Santa Fe.

“I really need to be closer [to Santa Fe], or I would tend to become a complete recluse out there,” she said.

Plaza Blanca Ranch has been the 80-year-old’s oasis in which to meditate, write and host retreats.

“The land itself insists on peace,” said the Academy Award-winning actress and author of several books, including Out on a Limb.

MacLaine has added her own unique touches to the original buildings on the property, which include nine bedrooms and five bathrooms, a yurt and an underground apartment. The rooms in the main house feature adobe walls and wood ceilings.

The property is also home to a horse barn, chicken coops, two ponds, a swimming pool, a greenhouse and a caretaker’s house.

The property is off the grid, so power originates from solar panels and a wind generator.

Looks like many veteran actresses are leaving behind their New Mexico retreats for greener pastures. MacLaine‘s contemporary, Jane Fonda, listed her Fork Lightning Ranch for $19.5 million last month.

  • Sharon Stone Looking Hot at 56, How Does She Do It?

Sharon Stone‘s recent appearance on the cover of Shape magazine in a bikini and a sexy mesh top was just a little bit annoying for the rest of the women across America.

Even more annoying is the fact that the 56-year-old mother of three says she is worried about her upcoming vacation.

“I haven’t worked out in a couple of months because I just didn’t feel like it,” Stone told E! Online while promoting her Sharity.com auction of her clothes, which will benefit Yala, a Middle East and North Africa youth peace initiative.

“But now I’m going on vacation and I know what they’re going to do—[the tabloids] are going to put a circle around my ass and do one of those crazy magnified pictures saying, ‘What happened to her ass? It’s a bag of cheese.’ I would just like to say it’s a fine triple crème brie! Right when they zoom in I should have a tattoo on my ass that says, ‘You wish you could get a bite of this.’”

Stone said she still exercises even when she doesn’t feel like it, heading to her local 24-Hour Fitness gym.

“I just go in there and I work out like a savage,” she said.

Jane Fonda is and has been the inspiration for the single mom — from Fonda’s exercise videos “from 100 years ago” to a statement the exercise guru said 25 years ago, “If you’re disciplined, you are free.’

“So I do what it takes,” Stone said. “I go to the gym and I eat healthy.”

The Basic Instinct actress says that when she’s at home, she makes use of her pool.

“I put speakers under the water and I crank that up and I swim,” Stone said. “I have those Styrofoam weights and noodles, too. My friends and I get in the pool and we hang on our noodles and bicycle while we talk all day. We do the old lady workouts.”

The beautiful actress may have another motive for keeping in shape. She recently told Extra she is ready to date again.

“I’m available for dating,” she said. “What happened is my kids have reached the age where I feel comfortable to date. I didn’t want to date when they were little … who needs a bunch of people running in and out of their lives? Now I feel comfortable dating.”

Shouldn’t be too difficult for the 56-year-old beauty to find love again.

Anyone else have a sudden urge to work out?

  • Eileen Ford, Co-Founder of Ford Models and Creator of the Supermodel, Dies at 92

Eileen Ford, who co-founded Ford Models (formerly Ford Modeling Agency) with her husband Jerry in 1946, has died at the age of 92. She had been hospitalized since last week after suffering a fall in her New York City apartment.

Ford was instrumental in forming the modern modeling business, creating the supermodel and was influential in setting the standard of beauty for decades.

Daughter Katie Ford released a statement to PEOPLE magazine:

“Eileen loved Jerry and her family and her friends, as well as Le Cirque, football, ballet, bellini’s, Benny Goodman, ’21’, books on history, the New York Post and The New York Times, Seinfeld, The Stork Club, her flower garden, The Ritz in Paris, champagne and caviar; great food and deli; Harry’s Bar in Venice, Frank & Ella, Aquavit, Quogue, Fairfield, Oldwick, the townhouse on 78th Street, beautiful models, photographers, fashion, Fred Astaire, and life in general.

“She was interested in everyone, and truly LOVED her husband of 64 years, Jerry, and her children, Jamie, Billy, Katie and Lacey, and her brothers Tom, Bill, and Bobby, and her grandchildren Tiger, Gerard, Jamie, Gered, Alessandra, Isabel, Will and Emma (and her adored five great grandchildren).”

Born Eileen Otte on March 25, 1922, Ford grew up on Long Island. In 1944, she met and married Jerry Ford, who was two years younger than she, and a football player at Notre Dame.

Their modeling business began simply enough — a model herself, she began to handle modeling bookings for two of her friends. Within a few short years, the business was flourishing.

While Jerry ran the business, Eileen kept busy taking care of the models. Their company changed the landscape of the business, taking it from “a mostly part-time, poorly paid hobby into one of the world’s most glamorous occupations, turning attractive girls next door into multimillionaire celebrity supermodels,” as reported by PEOPLE.

Ford introduced the world to renowned models Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Ali MacGraw, Brooke Shields, and supermodels Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Rachel Hunter, to name a few.

Ford had a very distinct vision of beauty and demanded that her models have that certain look.

“I feel that my ideas of beauty have been given very strong backing by Botticelli and a few others,” she told PEOPLE. “Slender hands, long neck, long limbs – look at Nefertiti. She was very teensy-weensy with a long neck and wide-spaced eyes.”

“The typical Ford woman was tall, thin, often blond, with wide-set eyes and a long neck. Eileen Ford was known to tell hopefuls shorter than 5 foot 7 to give up their dreams,” noted the Associated Press. “The Ford look changed remarkably little over the years, and set a standard for the industry. Height and a willowy build remain paramount, though Ford was disdainful of the ‘waif’ look – typified by British model Kate Moss – popular in the early 1990s.”

Robert Lacey, who has written a biography about Ford, Model Woman, which will be released in 2015, said Ford had a close relationship with many of the models, sometimes even inviting them to live in their home.

“Eileen was an outspoken and controversial woman, never afraid to offend in defense of her traditional standards and, in particular, of the welfare of her models, to whom she was fiercely protective,” says Robert Lacey. “Eileen Ford treated her models as her own children – many stayed with her and her family in their Manhattan town house at East 78th Street. With her husband Jerry she worked to improve models’ working conditions and wages, moving away from payment by the hour or day to the concept of payment by ‘usage,’ which laid the economic basis for the phenomenon of the supermodel.”

Ford Models was eventually sold in 2007, the year before Jerry Ford’s death.

  • Jane Fonda Says “Staying Active” is the Key to Long Life

Jane Fonda, the famous 76-year-old actress and fitness activist credits an active lifestyle for keeping her emotionally centered and healthy later in life. “I believe in fitness,” Fonda says. “Whether you’re young, old, whether you’ve ever been exercising or just starting. It’s important. Maybe the most important thing in having a successful, long life.”

The star, who released her 23rd workout video just last year, says that staying physically active can play a crucial role in fighting depression and nervous breakdowns. “If you’re in the middle of a breakdown, working out really hard is not a bad thing because it does keep you from going over the edge – it gets the endorphins going. It makes all the difference in the world.” When asked how she’s stayed sane and humble in Hollywood after all these years, Fonda replied, “The fact that I have always remained physically active has had a great deal to do with it. It has kept me centred and balanced emotionally.”

The other motivating factor? Endorphins. “My energy is going, my blood is flowing and you know everything is moving. I also feel good because I am proud of myself – I did it! You know what I mean? That’s what keeps me going.”

All of the fitness, emotional balance, and endorphins contribute to Fonda’s positive outlook on aging. “When you’re outside of aging it’s really, really scary but when you’re in the middle of it it’s not scary at all,” she says. Fonda also isn’t embarrassed to admit she’s had a bit of plastic surgery for “bags and sagging” and has had hip and knee replacements. “I’m glad I live at a time when you can replace fenders and hubcaps… instead of saying ‘well, I have these problems so I’m going to stop’, what’s happened is I’ve adjusted how I work out to my physical limitations.”

  • Jane Fonda: Not Afraid of Dying and Still Into Sex

Actress Jane Fonda’s career has spanned four decades and has had plenty of ups and downs. Fonda’s acting career exploded as she took the role of 60s sex symbol Barbarella, and she quickly became famous for her anti-war activism, her workout tapes, and her three marriages (including one to media mogul Ted Turner).

While looking back on her turbulent life, Fonda this week sat down with Oprah Winfrey on the show Oprah’s Next Chapter. In particular, Fonda addressed her 2010 breast cancer diagnosis, stating that she is not afraid of dying.

“A couple of years ago I got breast cancer, and that was a good test because I always said, ‘I’m not afraid of dying,’” said Fonda. “And I wasn’t.”

Fonda went on to discuss how women’s sex lives can improve with age, her black daughter, and how she looks back on her lifetime of accomplishments.

“I’m old, and I feel really young,” said Fonda.

  • Jane Fonda’s Role in “The Butler” and her Crazy Life

Jane Fonda has been selected to play the role of Nancy Reagan in the upcoming film “The Butler.” The movie is a biopic of Eugene Allen, who began working as a White House butler during the Truman administration and retired while Reagan was in office.

The actress has many notches on her belt and has lived a crazy lifestyle. At the age of 73 she is still putting out aerobics videos that sell millions of copies and she looks phenomenal!

Some people commented on Twitter that they are not happy that Fonda will portray Nancy:

Apparently a lot of the controversy is stemming from the fact that Fonda has history of anti-war activism and a former marriage to a Democratic politician. Does this mean that she shouldn’t be allowed to play the role of a Republican?

Fonda has openly admitted that she “suffered from bulimia from age 13 to age 37. While modeling, she said she lived on cigarettes, coffee, speed, and strawberry yogurt.”

Here are some other interesting facts about the actress:

She is double-jointed and was a ballet dancer until the age of 41 when she broke her foot.

She was arrested for possessing a large quantity of pills but the charges were dropped after it was discovered that they were vitamins.

She ranked #51 on Entertainment Weekly’s “Greatest Movie Stars of All Time” list.

And she was referenced in Sir Mix a Lot’s, “Baby Got Back.”

Fonda launched the PRIME TIME brand of Aerobics videos in 2010 that is geared for boomers and seniors. She is currently working on another video for the series.

  • Fonda And Steinem Want Limbaugh Off The Air

For years, Rush Limbaugh has been under fire for his comments on air during his radio program, “The Rush Limbaugh Show”. Lately, however, he seems to be going out of his way to incense the public, and his sponsors are dropping like flies.

On Monday, the three co-founders of the Women’s Media Center–Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem–wrote a commentary on CNN.com expressing their disgust that Limbaugh has been allowed to use “degrading language” over the airwaves under the claim that he is protected by the First Amendment rights. As reported earlier by Mike Tuttle, Limbaugh’s supporters feel his rights are being trampled and have blown up the web with explosive comments and arguments.

The commentary comes after a host of Limbaugh’s sponsors pulled their ads and several radio stations dropped his show following incendiary comments he made about law student Sandra Fluke and her advocacy of insurance-covered birth control. As reported earlier this week, Gloria Allred went public with her pursuit of the prosecution of Limbaugh for those same remarks, citing defamation of character.

The commentary talks about particular comments Limbaugh has made in the past and claims that the newest controversial statements are even worse than his “regular sexist, racist and homophobic hate speech”, using examples from his radio show to back up the complaint. It also lists several popular opinions on both Limbaugh and whether the issue is political or not, and goes on to state the opinions of the famous feminists on each matter. It’s clear that they believe Limbaugh is not going to change his ways in the near future:

Limbaugh doesn’t just call people names. He promotes language that deliberately dehumanizes his targets. Like the sophisticated propagandist Josef Goebbels, he creates rhetorical frames — and the bigger the lie, the more effective — inciting listeners to view people they disagree with as sub-humans. His longtime favorite term for women, “femi-Nazi,” doesn’t even raise eyebrows anymore, an example of how rhetoric spreads when unchallenged by coarsened cultural norms.

The opinion piece ends by stating that the FCC should shut down Limbaugh’s show once and for all in a show of support of the sentiment of the general public, and pleads with readers to do what they can in order to take him off the air:

This isn’t political. While we disagree with Limbaugh’s politics, what’s at stake is the fallout of a society tolerating toxic, hate-inciting speech. For 20 years, Limbaugh has hidden behind the First Amendment, or else claimed he’s really “doing humor” or “entertainment.” He is indeed constitutionally entitled to his opinions, but he is not constitutionally entitled to the people’s airways. It’s time for the public to take back our broadcast resources. Limbaugh has had decades to fix his show. Now it’s up to us.”
