  • Jake Gyllenhaal Reveals Which Beloved Director Called Him The “Worst Actor”

Jake Gyllenhaal Reveals Which Beloved Director Called Him The “Worst Actor”

Jake Gyllenhaal has had many roles that are near and dear to our hearts–doomed, adorable Donnie Darko, to name one–and these days he can pretty much take his pick when it comes to scripts, but at one time, he recently revealed, a very successful director thought he was just the worst.

Gyllenhaal told Jimmy Fallon this week that he was stoked when his reps thought he’d be perfect for the role of Frodo in Lord Of The Rings , but when it came time to audition, he was confused by the script he was given because it contained a lot of stage direction but not much else.

“Literally, Peter Jackson was like (facepalm), ‘You are the worst actor that I have ever seen. Did anyone tell you you’re supposed to have an accent?’” Jake said.

Say it ain’t so! Obviously, the criticism didn’t keep Jake from following his dream, and the role of Frodo went to Elijah Wood, so everything worked out for everyone in the end.

Jake, who’s one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, spoke last year about love and why he’s had so many relationships that come to an end, saying he’s been in love twice but he ended up getting scared. Gyllenhaal says that he does want to get married someday, and that his sister Maggie’s marriage to Peter Sarsgaard is a “standard” for him when it comes to relationship goals. The couple have been married nearly seven years and have two daughters.

“I think it’s hard for everybody, man. But I also think at some point, you just decide to grow up, you know? There are a lot of beautiful women, and there are opportunities. But at the same time, if you find the right person … I believe in monogamy. I believe in when you meet somebody who’s right, it will be right, and you’ll stay there,” Jake Gyllenhaal said.

  • Kirsten Dunst Wants Boyfriend With Old-Fashioned Manners, Do You Fit the Bill?

Kirsten Dunst talks boyfriends in a recent interview with The Edit, and she points out things that are a must-have when seeking a man. See if you might fit the bill as Kirsten Dunst’s other half.

Don’t get all carried away, however. Kirsten Dunst is spoken for. She and actor Garrett Hedlund are a thing–a good one, too. But just in case she decides she’s going unload her current flame, you can be prepared to step in–if you have the following qualifications.

“I appreciate old-fashioned manners,” Dunst explains.

“I want a guy to pay for dinner and open the door for me,” she adds. “I love the masculine.”

Kirsten Dunst was previously linked to Jake Gyllenhaal and Johnny Borrell–but not at the same time, of course. It’s uncertain if this next comment was aimed at them.

“I’ve dated men who had more of a feminine side,” she says. “And it didn’t work.”

Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedland met on the set of On the Road, and have been together for four years. She wants to have kids. Will that be the deal-breaker, or is Hedlund up for parenthood, too?

“I want to continue acting, but I also want to have kids,” she says. “I think I’ll be ready to have them in two years or something.”

Be prepared, gentlemen. Brush up on those old-fashioned manners and sock away a lot of dough. You’ll be paying for dinner if you get to date Kirsten Dunst–if Garrett Hedlund doesn’t marry her or become her baby daddy first.

Do you have what it takes to date Kirsten Dunst?

  • Jake Gyllenhaal Dishes On What Really Terrified Him About Making The Emotionally-Charged Film ‘Demolition’

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up about how he prepared for his role in the Jean-Marc Vallee film, Demolition, including the aspect that terrified him the most.

Gyllenhaal, who stars alongside Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper and Judah Lewis, said during a press conference at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday that the unconventional film played on his own fears, especially of some dancing scenes.

“He [Vallee] came to me and said, ‘We’re going to do a scene in a car and you’re going to basically break down.’ I said, ‘What? We’re on 86th Street and Madison Avenue,’” recalled Gyllenhaal.

“That’s his spirit. Feelings don’t come when we expect them too, so shoot the movie in the same way,” Gyllenhaal added.

Based on a Black List script by Bryan Sipe, Demolition centers on an investment banker (Gyllenhaal) who finds himself in emotional turmoil after the death of his wife. The banker is in the throes of examining his life and where he went wrong when he meets a single mom (Watts) who rescues him from his darkness.

“It’s a story about a guy who begins the movie in a conventional way and ends the movie through an unconventional journey, feeling however [he feels], and not how society tells him to feel,” Gyllenhaal explained.

“That’s uncomfortable as an actor. It’s not what you’ve been told grief is supposed to be, but discovering as you go along. And doing it with him [Vallee],” he added.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Dallas Buyers Club and Wild director told the TIFF presser that grief for his characters in Demolition came in every day moments.

“This breakdown moment, where this guy is saying he doesn’t feel anything to this guy on the train, and he becomes emotional when he says it, I liked the contradiction,” Vallee said.

Gyllenhaal shared that Vallee often became emotional on set before Gyllenhaal was urged to follow suit with his character.

“Jean-Marc would come up to me before a scene with tears in his eyes, before my character had tears in his eyes. And he’d be there right with me, deep in wherever I was, or where he wanted me to go. He’d say, now come join me,” the actor recalled.

One way Gyllenhaal’s character moved through his grief was through dancing.

“I was always looking on the schedule for when the dancing was going to be. I was mostly just terrified,” he admitted to the presser.

Vallee usually began one of the dance scenes without prior warning.

“The first time I danced, we were on the train, and he [Vallee] said, ‘Okay, the train’s pulling in,’ and he handed me an iPod and gave me an earphone and said, ‘Are you ready to dance? Let’s go,” Gyllenhall recalled.

“At the end, I didn’t want to stop dancing, I made like a whirling dervish,” Jake Gyllenhaal said.

A U.S. release for Demolition is slated for April 6, 2016.

  • Jake Gyllenhaal Explains How Parents’ Divorce Changed Him Forever

Jake Gyllenhaal says the divorce of his parents seven years ago changed him forever.

The Southpaw actor was already established as an actor and a grown man when his parents, director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner finalized their divorce in 2009, but Gyllenhaal says the sudden shift in his personal life caused him to hit pause on the direction in which his career was going.

“It allowed me to be more honest with myself,” the 34-year-old actor told People magazine.

Although news of the split was earth-shattering for the actor and his family, he says he respected his parents’ courage in making that very difficult decision.

“There was a sense of two people who said ‘What is our truth?’ It was painful for a lot of people in our family, but that honesty was inspiring.”

Since then, Gyllenhaal, who was recently called “perfect” by Kelly Ripa, has taken lessons learned from the painful experience in being honest in his own life and career choices, and emulates his parents whenever possible.

“They’re really everything to me,” he said.

Case in point — in taking on the mature role as a grieving father in Southpaw, Jake Gyllenhaal “went to places emotionally that I don’t think he’d ever explored before,” said director Antoine Fuqua.

  • Kelly Ripa Calls ‘Southpaw’ Star Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Perfect’

Kelly Ripa got it right when she called Southpaw star Jake Gyllenhaal “perfect” this week.

The morning talk show hostess went all weak at the knees at the sight of Jake Gyllenhaal on his appearance of Live With Michael and Kelly to promote his flick Southpaw.

As soon as he walked out onto the stage, Kelly Ripa asked if she could rub his beard. When he obliged her request, she gushed to the audience, “Oh, it’s soft!”

It was almost embarrassing when Kelly Ripa asked Jake if he uses beard conditioner.

    “No, it’s genetic,” replied Gyllenhaal.

After a few minutes of pleasantries, Ripa finally exclaimed, “Oh…wow you are perfect, aren’t you?”

    And his answer? “Totally perfect.”

    Way to own it, Jake!

Jake Gyllenhaal truly is a fine specimen as the world can attest, but he has made it clear that the chiseled body he has attained to play a boxer in Southpaw did not come without some hard work.

His trainer, Terry Claybon, told E! News that Jake Gyllenhaal went from 147 pounds to a ripped 175 pounds in just six months.

“He wasn’t in any shape at all,” Claybon said. “We met at a boxing gym, and he was jumping rope. Just the way he was jumping rope, I knew we had a lot of work to do.”

The workout sessions included at least “2,000 sit-ups a day, push-ups, dips, flipping 350 pound tires, and running eight miles five days a week.”

There you go Kelly Ripa … that explains it.

  • Rachel McAdams Talks “Gross” Onscreen Death

Rachel McAdams Talks “Gross” Onscreen Death

Rachel McAdams spoke recently about her co-star’s stunning transformation (caution: spoilers ahead!) for Southpaw, saying that Jake Gyllenhaal really committed not only to the physical aspects of becoming boxer Billy Hope, but to the emotional ones as well. And while it’s clear that Gyllenhaal gave his all to the role, McAdams is earning praise for doing the same, even getting into the ring herself during filming to try and understand the sport of boxing a little better.

“When Jake was first starting to box, and I went and met him at the gym, he had a big bushy beard and a ponytail. Then, when I first showed up on set on day one, he was in the middle of shooting that first fight in the stadium. I was so unprepared and it was just amazing to get closer and closer to that ring and see him emerge and what he had done – not just the physical transformation but even his emotional shift was so palpable. He had become this person on a cellular level. So really extraordinary. Very awe-inspiring,” Rachel said.

Recently, the actress talked a bit about her part in the film and the transformation she had to undergo–which included hours in the makeup chair to portray Maureen–and revealed that it took hours to film her character’s death scene.

“I died for about seven hours. It was a very long drawn out death. The blood is pretty gross too. It’s like this red corn syrupy stuff,” McAdams said.

Gyllenhaal says he trained for about five months to achieve the right look for his character, and producer Peter Riche said that the goal for everyone was to make the film look as authentic as possible.

“The word ‘authentic’ was a word used every day all day. And it had to look different and it had to elevate boxing movies, so that was the intent — to show boxing in a way that you’ve never seen it,” Riche said.

Southpaw was written by Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and hits theaters on Friday, July 24.

  • Rachel McAdams Runs, Guns, Boxes, Then Pukes

Rachel McAdams Runs, Guns, Boxes, Then Pukes

Rachel McAdams puts her all into her roles. She’s not about to let her male costars outpace her.

Recently, when shooting an intense and physically demanding scene for True Detective, Rachel McAdams was all about keeping up her energy, being in top shape for the part. But something went horribly wrong.

“That one took about five days,” Rachel McAdams said. “That was pretty intense. I actually puked during that scene. When I was running and reloading my gun—it actually wound up being about 200 yards, it was like two football fields—and I was just going all out and we did it a couple of times.”

Did McAdams end up picking up a virus on location?

“It was my own fault,” she explains. “I had been drinking that Emergen-C and going hard to just try to keep my energy up. Not a good combination, the running and that. But I kind of felt badass. Like yeah, let’s do it again. It was really fun though. I like action. I like being thrust into that.”

Then there was Rachel McAdams’ commitment to her role in Southpaw. While Jake Gyllenhaal certainly had to stay in shape to play a boxer, McAdams was hitting the heavy bag on set, too.

“I figured [my character] Maureen would understand boxing really well. She’d make it her business to know it. Jake came and watched me box in the ring. I just tried to pick it up. Nowhere near the extent that Jake did. It was an excuse to sweat and get in shape. It’s a total head to toe workout – you do one three-minute round and you’re toast,” McAdams said.

  • Rachel McAdams On Why She Boxed On The Set Of New Movie

Rachel McAdams doesn’t play a boxer in her new film Southpaw, but her on-screen husband–played by Jake Gyllenhaal–does, and she said she dove deep into her role in order to play the character right. For McAdams, that included taking up boxing and practicing on set.

“I figured Maureen would understand boxing really well.

It’s not as though Rachel is in bad shape; her character on the hit HBO show True Detective has to be fit in order to chase the bad guy and keep up that dangerous knife habit she has. And speaking of knives, the actress isn’t averse to using them in real life, either. McAdams said in an interview recently that after being diverted to a shady hotel in Costa Rica while there on vacation several years ago, she slept with a knife to feel safe.

“I was kind of stupid. I got off the flight to Costa Rica and got on a little four-seater Cessna plane and was dropped in the middle of the rainforest as the rain was pelting down. I got in a cab with no doors and asked the driver to take me to this hotel, and he told me in broken English it had burned down, so I wound up in a place costing five dollars a night. There was a cold shower and guys pounding on my door all night. I slept with my Swiss Army knife in my hand, thinking: ‘I’m going home tomorrow!’ Of course, things always seem worse in the night,” Rachel McAdams said.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow and Son Moses Hang With Taylor Swift After Concert

Gwyneth Paltrow took her nine-year-old son Moses to see Taylor Swift in London’s Hyde Park on Saturday, and wound up hanging out with the ‘Bad Blood’ singer after the show. This was the same night that Taylor Swift brought six celebrity guests up on stage with her as she sang her hit song, ‘Style.’ Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt and even tennis superstar Serena Williams strutted their stuff on the stage as Swift sang.

After the show, Taylor hung out with her friend of almost five years and her son.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Taylor Swift met when Paltrow hosted a dinner party for the ‘Blank Space’ singer and her boyfriend at that time–Jake Gyllenhaal. Paltrow was still married to Coldplay front man Chris Martin then. He is now connected to Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.

Gwyneth Paltrow took to social media to thank Taylor Swift for a fantastic evening.

“#taylorswift thanks for giving me and my little man our best date night ever. #hydepark,” she captioned her post.

When Taylor Swift and Gwyneth Paltrow parted company, Taylor spent the rest of her weekend in the company of boyfriend Calvin Harris, along with Gigi Hadid and her boyfriend Joe Jonas. BFF Karlie Kloss joined the two couples and served as their London tour guide.

“Little known fact: Karlie is secretly an unofficial historian/London tour guide. Kind of,” Swift captioned an Instagram photo of the five friends together.

A photo posted by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Gigi Hadid, Joe Jonas, and Karlie Kloss all appear to be good friends, and they spend time together back in the U.S. as well as in London. Do you expect the same can be said for Taylor Swift and Gwyneth Paltrow? Do you think their friendship is the kind where they call each other to just say ‘hi,’ or is it more of a ‘friendship’ of opportunity?

  • Emilia Clarke of ‘Game of Thrones’ Donning Crutches Offers Uncanny Arnold Schwarzenegger Impersonation

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones and more recently as Sarah Conor in the new film Terminator: Genisys, gave an uncanny Arnold Schwarzenegger impression despite hobbling around on crutches.

The 28-year-old star ditched the crutches on Friday at a photocall for the film in Paris, and it is still unknown what ails the star. Her rep had no comment about her condition.

The crutches first made their appearance last week in Spain, where Emilia is filming her latest film, Me Before You.

While in London this week to promote the Terminator film, Clarke hobbled about wearing a powder half-sleeve blue Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2015 shift dress that featured child-like illustrations and the Italian words, “Tu la mamma piu bella del mondo,” which translates roughly to “You are the most beautiful mom in the world.” Odd choice considering the actress has no children of her own.

It was when Emilia Clarke joined Terminator co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, 67, model and actress Cara Delevingne, 22, Jake Gyllenhaal, 34, and British rapper Tinie Tempah, 26, that she schooled them with her impression of the former governor of California.

In Terminator: Genisys, Clarke plays a younger version of main heroine Sarah Connor. The movie will be released on July 1.

Who’s looking forward to seeing Emilia Clarke portray Sarah Conner in Terminator: Genisys?

  • Taran Killam, Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Off Broadway Production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Taran Killam of SNL fame will soon be headed to an off Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors alongside actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Jake Gyllenhaal will make his stage musical debut as geeky florist Seymour Krelborn, while Taran Killam will play Orin Scrivello, better known as the sadistic dentist played by Steve Martin in the 1986 film.

The Dick Scanlan-directed concert production was initially scheduled for just one performance, but has since been rescheduled to include three. They will take place at New York’s City Center on July 1 and 2, 2015.

Jake Gyllenhaal last appeared on Broadway this season in the Constellations, opposite Ruth Wilson. Off Broadway, he made his debut just two and a half years ago in Roundabout’s If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet. Little Shop marks Taran Killam’s professional stage debut. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live since 2010, and his theater roots run deep. He played the role of Abram Hamilton in the Academy Award-winning film 12 Years A Slave.

Taran Killam has built quite a comedic following since his time at SNL. Many of those New York-based fans will no doubt scramble for tickets to see him in his off-Broadway premiere.

  • Calvin Harris: Is He Taylor Swift’s New Love?

Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift have been spotted together again, prompting many to wonder if the two are dating. Harris and the ‘Style’ singer attended a Kenny Chesney concert together in Nashville on Thursday night, and Calvin Harris was among those cheering loudly when Taylor Swift was invited up on stage to sing with the country star.

On Wednesday, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris were spotted together (and wearing matching outfits no less) at a Whole Foods store. Taylor attended one of Calvin’s concerts earlier in March in Las Vegas. It was after that concert that Calvin Harris told Capital FM that she “looks lovely” but is not his “type.”

Either Taylor Swift turned out to be his type or Calvin Harris changed what he perceives his “type” to be, because it’s pretty clear these two have been spending quite a bit of time together.

It was only a little over a month ago when Calvin Harris and model Aarika Wolf parted ways. And Taylor Swift hasn’t dated anyone since that fateful New Years Eve split from One Direction’s Harry Styles back in 2013. In the past, however, she had a string of bad romances, including pairings with Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, Conor Kennedy, Taylor Lautner, and John Mayer.

Last year while promoting her album 1989, Taylor Swift told E! News she hadn’t given up on dating, but was being “very protective” of her happiness.

“I found a place in my life that feels really great and I’m not willing to compromise that for just anyone, and so, you can paraphrase that all you want into something very extreme, but they make what I say extreme no matter what I say. I’m really happy about the fact that being single doesn’t feel like being alone,” the ‘Blank Space’ singer said. “I have love in my life, I just don’t have a relationship, and that feels really natural right now.”

“I’m not going to compromise the happiness and independence that I’ve found for just anybody. The idea of a date gives me a partial panic attack!” she added. “It includes 40 paparazzi cameras shooting through windows at us, and that’s not relaxing or alluring for me. That makes me want to crawl under the couch and hide! But I’m fine! I have two cats. That’s all I need.”

“It would take an astonishing human for me to even consider getting back into a relationship. It would take something really, really, really, really different—a kind of a one-in-a-million person for me to face all that. I don’t have any kid of idea who I’d want to be with, because I don’t have any pieces missing from my life right now. I’m not looking for anything to complete,” Taylor Swift said. “I think that’s a nice place to be.”

Do you think Calvin Harris–known best for hits including ‘Feel So Close,’ might be that one-in-a-million person for Taylor Swift?

It would no doubt shock her fans to see her settle down into a good relationship.

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal Shows Up With “Creepy” Brother Jake At Golden Globe Awards

Jake Gyllenhaal brought his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, as his date for the Golden Globe Awards. Both are nominated for awards, Jake for his role in the film Nightcrawler, and Maggie for her role in the mini-series The Honorable Woman. Jake looked dapper in a simple but stylish tailored suit while Maggie stunned the red carpet with her rose-colored, floor-length satin gown.

In The Honorable Woman, Maggie plays Baroness Nessa Stein, an Anglo-Israeli businesswoman embroiled in a geo-political conflict. Jake on the other hand, is nominated for his role in Nightcrawler as a sociopathic videographer with a can-do attitude who aims to make it in the tabloid business.

“We didn’t discuss it at all before it happened,” Maggie said about their nominations. “I have to say, I do think it’s pretty cool. It will truly be more fun because he’s there.”

“I’m happy to be with my sister,” Jake told Today show host Carson Daly. “In a weird way, I spent my childhood watching her. Looking up to her. It’s just wonderful.”

Maggie also sang Jake’s praises for his creepy turn in Nightcrawler. “I’m tired of people saying how creepy he was in it!” she said with a laugh. “I’ve had about 15 people say to him, ‘You’re so creepy in that movie.’ I loved him in Nightcrawler. He was like a creepy clown… I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s incredible.”

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Maggie opened up about her personal life and her relationships. She revealed that one of her prized possessions is her wedding vows with husband Peter Sarsgaard. “When we got married in 2009, my husband and I wrote our own individual vows and after the wedding my husband dived into a swimming pool with the vows in his pocket. But I managed to retrieve them, dry them out and frame them. They now hang next to our bed.”

  • Anna Kendrick Says Meryl Streep Is a ‘Bro’ and Emily Blunt Is the ‘Kind of Gal Who Loves a Fart Joke’

Anna Kendrick Says Meryl Streep Is a ‘Bro’ and Emily Blunt Is the ‘Kind of Gal Who Loves a Fart Joke’

Anna Kendrick had a few things to say about her Into the Woods costars during a game of “Cinder-Tell-A!” with Andy Cohen Tuesday.

The Pitch Perfect 2 star made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live! and played a rapid-fire round of the game — aptly named for her Into the Woods character — with Cohen, dishing on her famous cast-mates.

When asked to rate Meryl Streep, who plays the film’s witch, on scale of Meryl to Meryl -— awesome to icy, Kendrick spitted out, “She’s not that Meryl. No. I mean, ’cause you think Meryl and you think she’s going to be like cold and regal and you have to talk to her about very serious things,” Kendrick tried to explain. “She just wants to have a beer and talk about the MTV Movie Awards. She’s just kind of a bro. She’s not super Meryl, for Meryl.”

Next up was a question about what Chris Pine tasted like during their onscreen kiss.

“Cinnamon in a meadow. Dreams,” she said, adding that his butt was “taut and covered in blue velvet. In pale blue velvet.”

Kendrick said her biggest disappointment came when actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who was slated to play the Prince, quit the musical to work on Nightcrawler.

“I didn’t know anybody on the set and it was a real intimidating cast,” she said. “I was going to be all alone, I was going to be Sally No Friends. And it’s all your fault, [Jake].”

On the other hand, the 29-year-old actress and singer said the nicest surprise was the friendship she developed with actress Emily Blunt, who plays the Baker’s wife.

“She’s real self-deprecating. She’s another one you’d think she’d be like cool and English and icy but she’s the kind of gal that who loves a fart joke and I appreciate that,” Kendrick said.

  • Anna Kendrick on Jake Gyllenhaal, Feminism, and “Into the Woods”

Anna Kendrick has become one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, despite the criticism she has received for her looks. After making a name for herself in movies such as Twilight, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and cult hit Pitch Perfect, the actress has now been cast in half a dozen movies set to release within the next year.

Kendrick’s latest role will be Cinderella in Into the Woods, which opens on Christmas day. The movie is a Rob Marshall-directed adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. As part of her media tour in the run-up to the movie’s release Kendrick this week sat down with The Daily Beast to talk movies, Disney, and feminism.

Kendrick kicked off the interview by playfully criticizing Jake Gyllenhall, who she starred with in 2012’s End of Watch. Gyllenhaal was originally cast as Rapunzel’s prince in Into the Woods, but later backed out. Instead, Gyllenhaal took on the more serious role of a disturbed crime paparazzi cameraman in Nightcrawler – a role for which he has generated some Oscar buzz.

Kendrick said she texted Gyllenhaal after he dropped out of the project, sarcastically telling him that he was “abandoning” her. After seeing a Nightcrawler trailer she said she texted him again, telling him that he “inspires” her.

From there the interview questions got a bit more personal.

Kendrick agreed with the interviewer that the female characters in Into the Woods are more “modern” than their Disney counterparts. She then stated that she interprets feminism to mean supporting gender equality and laments the fact that the word has become a slur used by “the wrong people…and misinterpreted by those people.” She went on to say that she receives “crazy” replies on Twitter and that she admires the women involved in the #GamerGate controversy.

Kendrick declined to talk on the record about her part in the recent celebrity nude photo leaks. She did say, however, that the “one and only good thing” to come out of the photo leaks was to shift the media conversation away from blaming the victims of such leaks.

  • Rene Russo Talks About Longterm Bipolar Disorder

Rene Russo no doubt surprised her fans and members of the entertainment industry this week when she announced during a taping of Queen Latifah’s talk show that she is bipolar. The episode that was taped this past Monday will air on October 30th.

Russo will appear on The Queen Latifah Show to promote her new movie. Nightcrawler also stars Jake Gyllenhaal–who appeared on The Queen Latifah Show with her–and is directed by Rene Russo’s husband, Dan Gilroy. She didn’t go on the show expecting to talk about bipolar disorder.

Queen Latifah asked both Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal to describe a time in their lives when they were forced to ‘push through’ something and come out successful on the other side. That’s when Russo made her startling admission.

“I pretty much hit a wall,” she said. “My mom said my whole childhood, ‘You’re stop-and-go.’ I stopped and I had to like, ‘Whoa,’ that was it for me.”

A shocked silence ensued before Rene Russo began speaking again.

“For all the people that are having trouble and maybe feel bad about taking medication, I didn’t expect to say this, but that was really it for me,” she said. “It’s okay — you will make it through. It’s not easy but you will make it through.”

Queen Latifah praised Rene Russo for being brave and asked her what finally compelled her to seek help for her bipolar disorder.

“I literally crashed, hit a wall and couldn’t get out of bed,” Russo said. “I thought it was depression, but if you take antidepressants it speeds you up more. I’m kind of stop-and-go, I either crash or speed. I haven’t shared this, but I think it’s kind of important. I have some friends who don’t want to go on medication, and they are suffering.”

Kudos to Rene Russo for sharing that she has bipolar disorder. Hopefully others will see how successful her life has been since starting on bipolar meds, and be inspired by her actions.

  • Taylor Swift Not Interested in Dating

Taylor Swift sizzles on the November cover of British Vogue, and no doubt catches the eye of every man who lays eyes on the magazine–but the ‘Shake It Off‘ singer isn’t interested in dating any of them–at least not right now.

“Dating or finding someone is the last thing on my mind,” she says within its pages. “I can’t picture how it could work with the way my life is. I don’t know how a guy is supposed to walk next to his girlfriend when there are 20 men with cameras, and he can’t protect his girlfriend because that’s the life she chose.”

Swift doesn’t stop there either. In fact, she insists that not only isn’t she seeking a relationship, but is actively avoiding one.

“I just don’t see how it could work, so I don’t think about it, and I kind of run from it when it presents itself,” she said. “I don’t think any guy really… They think that they would want to get to know me, and maybe date me, but I don’t think they want what comes with it.”

Taylor Swift hasn’t had the greatest luck when it comes to dating. Things with Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Mayer all turned sour rather quickly.

Dating–or its avoidance–isn’t the only thing the singer dishes about in British Vogue. She also talks about her new album–1989–which features all-pop tracks instead of her usual country genre.

“This time around I’ve chosen the brave and bold way of going about things,” she says in her magazine interview. “Because with this album I’ve completely changed the sound of everything I’ve done until now. So it’s interesting to not be afraid of that. You know, I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, I don’t want to betray Nashville, whatever, but essentially it comes down to challenging yourself as an artist.”

So guys, if you had any notion of dating Taylor Swift any time soon, it doesn’t sound like you stand a chance. And actually, if you listen to the rumors of her splits from Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Mayer–it doesn’t really sound like she’s an easy woman to date.

Taylor Swift is adamant that she is ‘Never Ever Getting Back Together’ with Harry Styles. Maybe the other guys feel okay about that, too?

  • Susan Sarandon on Instant Fame, Social Media Feeding Frenzy and the Need for Legalized Marijuana

Susan Sarandon has to be one of the most authentically outspoken actresses around.

In a recent in-depth interview with the Hollywood Reporter for the release of her new film, Florence, the Oscar-winning actress dished on insta-fame, the social media feeding frenzy and the need for legalized marijuana.

According to Sarandon, there are really two types of celebrities in Hollywood these days — those who legitimately work because of the craft of acting, and those who need the attention and fame.

“We’re living in a world where mediocrity is rewarded,” said the 67-year-old actress. “If that’s not your focus, then you’re looking for the heat, to be validated by people you don’t necessarily respect or know, and so you’ve got yourself in a difficult, self-perpetuating, crazy ass feeding cycle. I’ve worked with a lot of young actors on the brink, and you can definitely see the difference between someone like Jake Gyllenhaal who is always interested in the work and do character parts, or Brad Pitt who could’ve gotten by just being pretty, who are really serious about trying different things. They like being an actor. It’s not just being famous.”

The Thelma and Louise actress explained that it’s all about being famous now and seeking a worthy endeavor is no longer the goal.

“I think we help people become famous for ten minutes now — it’s not even fifteen — so easily and constantly, that the goal has switched from finding something that you like to do to being famous,” Sarandon told the Hollywood Reporter. “I think it’s great that people are posting all kinds of things that they do, but some of them are just not really very worthy for that rush of all eyes on you.”

Sarandon conceded that she too falls prey to the social media feeding frenzy.

“I even find myself, since my dog has a Twitter account, an obligation to post every now and then,” she said. “It becomes like a whole other pet or something that you have to feed and be aware of! It’s such an interesting time in terms of what media has done.”

Sarandon concluded that it’s because of the constant need be on social media that marijuana should be legalized and regulated as a means to disconnect from the need to be online.

“One of the reasons I’m such a champion of the legalization and regulation of marijuana is that I feel that people need to disconnect from constantly being on — checking all the time, all the time, all the time,” Sarandon told the Hollywood Reporter. “Twitter and all these different outlets in themselves aren’t bad, but it becomes very hard to be present, and that’s what the goal has to be: to be authentic, kind and present, and if you could accomplish those three things, I think it’s a life well-lived.”

  • Rachel McAdams & Jake Gyllenhaal A New Couple?

A romantic dinner date or just two co-stars sharing a meal together?

Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal were spotted out together having dinner a few days ago at a restaurant called Meat and Potatoes in Pittsburgh. However, before rumors spread like wildfire about a budding romance, it’s important to note that the two are currently in production in the Steel City on a movie called Southpaw.

A source confirmed to E! News that the handsome pair enjoyed their meals and finished their plates. And, yet another source told the entertainment network that they’re just pals.

    Here’s a look:

McAdams is usually in the gossip news because the entire world seems to want her to get back together with ex-boyfriend Ryan Gosling. The couple won the hearts of movie fans with the sentimental chick flick The Notebook in 2004, but they haven’t actually been an item for almost four years. The rumors of their romantic reunion run rampant despite the fact that Gosling has been dating actress Eva Mendes for nearly three years.

According to imdb.com, the tagline for the film Southpaw is: “A boxer fights his way to the top, only to find his life falling apart around him.” Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is directing the drama. Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker are also in the film.

McAdams currently has several films in post production that should be released within the next year. One of the films is Cameron Crowe’s latest romantic comedy which is currently just being called, Untitled Cameron Crowe Project. The movie also stars Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone. The film has a December 25, 2014 release date.

  • Polar Vortex: Harbinger of Coldness

    Polar Vortex: Harbinger of Coldness

With a polar vortex gripping the northern and central regions of the country, the National Weather Service warns that “life-threatening wind chill” is something to be taken seriously, as parts of the U.S. brace for temperature lows not seen in decades.

The NWS broadcasts, “The coldest temperatures in almost two decades will spread into the northern and central U.S. today behind an arctic cold front. Combined with gusty winds, these temperatures will result in life-threatening wind chill values as low as 60 degrees below zero. Also, heavy snow will develop from the eastern Plains to the Great Lakes today, with up to a foot of accumulation possible.”

The aforementioned polar vortex, sometimes called the “circumpolar whirl,” is a sustained, large-scale cyclone situated near one or both of Earth’s geographical poles. Polar vortices are also known as mignogno cyclones, Arctic cyclones and sub-polar cyclones.

The cyclones hover near the poles year-round, and are weaker during summer and strongest during winter. When the polar vortex is strong, the Westerlies increase in strength. Though, when the polar cyclone is weak, the flow pattern across mid-latitudes collapses inward, and significant cold outbreaks occur. In rare occurrences, when the general flow pattern is amplified, the vortex can push further south as a result of axis interruption.

Here actor Jake Gyllenhaal can be seen battling multiple polar vortices in Roland Emmerich’s 2004 science fiction disaster film “The Day After Tomorrow:”

NWS spokesman Chris Vaccaro commented, “We haven’t seen the scope and severity of this cold air in at least 20 years. In some cases, it hasn’t been this cold since 1995-1996.”

Temperatures of 15 below have been predicted for Indianapolis and Chicago, which can leave exposed skin frostbitten in a matter of minutes. Hypothermia can also quickly set in, with wind chills that might reach 50 to 70 below zero.
