    iTunes 10.6.1 Update Now Avaliable

Apple released its 10.6.1 update for iTunes yesterday. The patch fixes a number of minor bugs, mostly for the 64-bit Windows version of iTunes. The most major issue fixed is one that would cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, while changing artwork sizes in grid view, or when syncing photos to devices. Other fixes include interface elements that were incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes, a problem that could cause iTunes to lock up when syncing to a iPod nano or iPod shuffle, and an issue regarding incorrect ordering while browsing TV episodes on the Apple TV.

Information about the security updates in this patch is not yet avaliable, as Apple “does not disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until a full investigation has occurred and any necessary patches or releases are avaliable.”

The update can be obtained through an Apple software update or can be downloaded directly from Apple’s support pages.

iTunes update 10.6 was released shortly after the announcement of the new iPad and new Apple TV. It included support for 1080p HD movies and TV shows from the iTunes store and provided improvement for iTunes Match, Apple’s subscription service that adds music not purchased on iTunes to iCloud.

  • iTunes Match Launch Imminent? Apple Releases New iTunes Beta To Developers

UPDATE: Apple has quietly launched iTunes Match. The new version of iTunes provides support for the service – and you can download it here. Although it might be smart to wait a few hours, as the service is already oversubscribed.

It appears that we are getting closer to the official launch of the iTunes Match service, as Apple has just released another beta to developers.

iTunes Match, the $25-a-year subscription service from Apple that “matches” a user’s iTunes music with a high-quality version in the cloud (so that it’s accessible anywhere), was scheduled for a late October release – but has obviously been delayed.

MacRumors reports that Apple has released iTunes 10.5.1 beta 3 to developers, and it contains stability improvements that are said to benefit the iTunes Match service.

    From the beta update:

iTunes 10.5.1 beta 3 includes a number of important stability and performance improvements for iTunes Match, and is a required update for all subscribers to iTunes Match beta.

Backup regularly and do not delete the music you add to iCloud from your computer. Apple may periodically delete all iCloud libraries during the beta period. This will require you to scan, match, and upload songs again

Currently, these developers are the only users with access to iTunes Match. These developers have seen Apple delete their iTunes Match libraries on a number of occasions in order to facilitate the testing – and this update is no different. Apple reminds devs that their iTunes Match music is never really safe and that they should always have backups stored to their computers.

So it looks like stability is the big reason for the delay. These beta releases with “stability and performance” updates, as well as Apple’s wording in the announcement emails suggest that the iTunes Match launch shouldn’t be too far away.

  • iTunes Match Beta Becomes Available

Apple has sent iTunes developers an email titled “iTunes Match beta now available.”

This is a feature of the upcoming iOS 5, announced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June. It lets you sync the music you didn’t purchase form iTunes. It upgrades songs to 256 kbps AAC DRM-free versions if it can match it to songs in its library. It if can’t match a song, it will upload it.

    The email reads:

iTunes Match stores your complete music library in iCloud, allowing you to enjoy your collection anywhere, anytime, on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or computer.

iTunes Match beta is currently available to developers in the United States. Beta subscribers will receive iTunes Match service during the beta period plus an additional 3 months for free with their 12 month paid subscription.

To get started with iTunes Match, download the current version of iOS 5 beta and iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 with iTunes Match. Once installed, choose Turn On iTunes Match from the Store menu, and click “Subscribe for $24.99.”

Please note that you must maintain a local backup of your iTunes library as well as any music you add to iCloud. Apple will periodically reset your iCloud library during the beta and it is critical that you backup your music regularly. Some features and optimizations of iTunes Match will not be available during the beta.

iTunes Match will be available this fall for $24.99 a year (US only).
