  • Sandra Oh Leaves ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Isaiah Washington Returns

Sandra Oh’s impending exit from Grey’s Anatomy was set into motion on Thursday evening, May 1st. So was the return of Isaiah Washington in his role as Dr. Preston Burke. Thursday’s episode marked Washington’s first appearance on the show since 2007.

“It was very energized — as it would be with the person you were about to marry. ‘I used to look into your face all the time — and now where I am looking into your face!’” she says in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There was a lot of things to play. And I hope it translates well.”

The show’s creator Shonda Rhimes knows people are sort of all over the place when it comes to a reunion of these two characters.

“I’ve had some people say, ‘I want them to get back together,’ I’ve had some people say, ‘They can’t possibly get back together,’ and I always tell people they need to remember that we’re talking about Cristina Yang here,” she says. “It’s not gonna be about whatever you expect it to be about.”

Sandra Oh told EW her take on the first on screen reunion between the two characters.

“It was very energized — as it would be with the person you were about to marry. ‘I used to look into your face all the time — and now where I am looking into your face!’” she said. “There was a lot of things to play. And I hope it translates well.”

  • Sandra Oh Welcomes Back Burke On Her Last Day

Sandra Oh has been with Grey’s Anatomy for ten long seasons, but tonight’s episode will be her last, and she’s taken to Twitter to document it.

Isaiah Washington will be making a return tonight after leaving in season 3, and his presence on the show is highly anticipated by fans. Writer and creator Shonda Rhimes says that bringing back Washington–as character Dr. Preston Burke–was an idea she didn’t take lightly.

“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey—he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang,” she said.

Oh’s departure has been a controversial one since it was announced last year, with ABC President Paul Lee commenting that he “didn’t have anything to say” about whether or not other cast members would be leaving. However, he praised Rhimes and her ability to draw in viewers with a story that will likely continue for years, no matter how many cast changes the show goes through.

“Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest writers that our generation has seen. She’s continuing to write an immensely powerful show. It makes you laugh and cry every week, and what season are we now? And by the way, to her enormous credit, it is completely different than Scandal. And I love it. I think it’s going to stay on the network for many years to come,” he said.

The good news for fans is, Rhimes says she will keep writing for the show as long as viewers continue to tune in.

“I knew the end of Grey’s Anatomy, and then we kept going, so that I finally just had to write that and move past it,” Rhimes said. “Who knows, at this point, how long that show’s going to go? It’s going to go as long as I feel interested in what happens to those characters.”

  • Isaiah Washington Returning To Grey’s Anatomy

Sometimes you do get a second chance.

Just ask actor Isaiah Washington, as he recently got invited back to play on Grey’s Anatomy after being gone for seven whole years.

Washington used to play Dr. Preston Burke on the show, but was let go in 2007 for using a gay slur towards cast mate T.R. Knight, and for some reason Washington used the same gay slur at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards while talking about the original incident.

According to Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator and head writer, the return of Washington has everything to do with closing out the story line of the character Cristina, played by Sandra Oh.

Cristina was engaged to Dr. Burke on the show, and Oh is leaving at the close of this season, so it was crucial to have some closure between her character and Washington’s.

“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should, said Rhimes in a statement. “Burke is vital to that journey. He gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

As some remember, Washington was at the receiving end of some very intense backlash after making those now infamous slurs, especially from gay activist groups. But perhaps surprisingly, GLADD, who is probably the biggest gay activist group in the country, said it feels okay about the actor returning to the show, because he’s changed a lot since 2007.

“His PSA and his statements promoting marriage equality in recent years have sent a strong message for LGBT people,” said GLAAD in a statement. “We look forward to seeing him return to one of our favorite shows, as well as in Patrick-Ian Polk’s moving film Blackbird about a young man coming out in a small Southern town.”
