  • Gwyneth Paltrow Turned Down Ironman?!

When Gwyneth Paltrow stopped by to chat with Howard Stern, the shock jock got a lot of juicy talk out of the actress.

Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she was tempted by a role in Vanilla Ice’s Cool as Ice film as a young actress, but was warned off it by her producer father. Had that fortuitous bit of advice not happened, we might not have Gwyneth Paltrow as we know her today.

But there have been other close calls, too. she initially turned down the role of Pepper Potts in Ironman.

“I was reluctant about Ironman initially because I had two little kids. I had worked so much in my 20’s That I kind of was like, ‘I just wanna be home.’ I was a little burnt out. I had these beautiful babies and I wanted to be home with them. I didn’t want to go back to work.

“I remember my agent calling me and saying, ‘They want you to be in Ironman.’ I was like, ‘No, thanks.’ I was in full parent mode. I had taken three years off. I remember him saying, ‘You know, if you don’t do a movie soon, you’re out of the business.’”

In fact, it took calls from Robert Downey, Jr. himself to drag the actress to the role.

Gwyneth Paltrow also revealed that shooting Ironman was a very different kind of experience, particularly thanks to Robert Downey, Jr.’s penchant for ditching the script and doing whatever he wanted.

“It’s fun. It was really fun. Basically, how it would work is, we would come in and rehearse. He would say, ‘This is garbage.’ I would cringe because the writer would be there. When the writers work with Robert they know that it’s just part of his process. Even if Robert writes the scene the night before, he comes in and he’s like, ‘This is shit.’ He likes to come in and just make it up on the fly. For me it was really fun because I like improv and he is hilarious.”

The character and the films won her over. Asked if she would want to play Pepper Potts again, or if she is done with the role, she responded quickly.

“I would like to play Pepper Pots again. It’s such a fun job because I like being with Robert. He’s really fun and he’s brilliant and funny and complicated and warm. He’s just a wonderful guy, so I really enjoy my time on the set with him.”

  • Dick Bavetta Officiates 2,633 NBA Games Straight

During the Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks game Wednesday night, NBA referee Dick Bavetta officiated his 2,633rd consecutive regular season game, which beat MLB Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripkin Jr.’s long-standing record for the longest back-to-back participation in an American professional sporting event.

Richard T. “Dick” Bavetta, 74, got his start as an NBA referee in 1975, and he has never missed an assigned game since. He began officiating after his brother Joe, a ref for the American Basketball Association at the time, convinced him that it would be a good career. Bavetta was a stock broker on Wall Street during those days, and began officiating games between fellow brokers in the Wall Street League, played at New York’s Downtown Athletic Club.

Bavetta went on to referee high school games, before moving on to the Continental Basketball Association. In the mid-1960s, for nine years straight he was rejected during NBA referee tryouts, mainly due to his small, unimposing stature, though was finally hired on in 1975. His debut was on December 2, 1975 at Madison Square Garden in an NBA game between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics. He soon became seen as a referee of the lowest tier, and led the league in technical fouls and ejections called.

Bavetta eventually went on to become the highest paid ref in the NBA, raking in about $200,000 a year. His most well-known game was between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics in the 1980’s. Celtics forward Larry Bird and 76ers guard Julius Erving began to strangle each other and were ejected by Bavetta.

    Here’s the clip:

Commenting on what his record means to him, Bavetta said, “Well it means that I am here and alive and happy. And it doesn’t end here as they say. After tonight there is another game. That is what we do. I am just blessed that the ironman streak has been broken here (at Madison Square Garden), I couldn’t ask for something any better.”

Regarding any plans for retirement, Bavetta said, “I can’t think of any reason unless it’s an act of God with weather problems and things like that, but I’ve been blessed by the good Lord above with good health. So that has enabled me to stay healthy over the years and I think it’s symbolic of our profession.”

  • Nintendo Power Gloves Infused With Super Powers

The Nintendo Power glove was pretty useless, unless you had the ability to put it on and use it for other things like pretending you had the ability to play games with the glove. But you could also run around and pretend that you had a glove that could shoot lasers, or lift things telekinetically, or that gave you super strength. But what if the glove belonged to a superhero who already had powers?

Enter Josh Ln who has managed to infuse some powers, or in Batman’s case his costume, into the totally useless but totally awesome Nintendo Power Glove. Wolverine, Ironman, Thing, Batman, and Spiderman all make a cameo here and show that all you need is a little imagination. Go to Josh Ln’s Society 6 page to purchase any or all of these prints and hang them in your game room for all to marvel at!

  • Awkward Meetups In The Nerd World

    (image)

    Ironman vs. Batman

Ever had that awkward moment where you run into someone like an ex-girlfriend while you are out on a date? Or run into your boss when you are calling in sick? Those kinds of awkward moments are what life is made of. And this set of images falls in line with the UFCF piece that I did a couple days ago. What if 2 characters from fiction met who weren’t suppose to meet?

An artist named Berk Senturk from Paris, France has done his best to continue the quest for answers to these questions. He has created several pieces that put together 2 characters that are related in their adventures but not in the same universe. Check out all of his work here and let him know what you think. There are several more pieces, these were just my favorites:

The Avengers now have their own cocktails. Which I guess is fairly fitting seeing as they are also a cocktail…..a cocktail of ass kicking. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk are all well represented in this mixture showcase.

The social blog called “THE MORE I ARTY” put these together. I think they look great and they seem like they are about as much fun as going to see the film it self. Or you can down one of each, get a ride to the movie, and try to stay awake.

The Avengers Created By Items From Target

Target commissioned ad agency Wieden + Kennedy from Portland, Oregon to create an Avengers ad for their insert in the Entertainment Weekly Issue #1203 Summer movie edition. What they came up with for the “Superhero in every Aisle” campaign is nothing short of amazing.

They managed to create 5 things closely associated with the movie solely from items you can find at Target. They created Iron Man’s head, Captain America’s shield, Thor’s hammer, Hulk’s fists, and the Avengers logo. Check them out below:
