  • Canon Cameras Used in ‘Iron Man 3’

Canon has long been known for its high quality, when it comes to taking pictures in the photography field. Recently, however, Canon has also made a name for itself in the world of cinema.

Two years ago Canon launched its Cinema EOS camera system at an event in which cinematographers, press, directors and other invited guests attended. And although the company believes it is still in its beginning stages, the cinematic crew of Iron Man 3 believed in the system enough to use it on the film.

Part of the visual magic behind the action film is created by superimposing computer graphic imagery onto its use of live action stunt footage. The Iron Man 3 visual effects team was able to do this with help from the EOS C300 Cinema cameras.

“The Canon EOS C300 cameras gave us the main things we needed, which were detail, sharpness and resolution,” said Iron Man 3 visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend, in an interview.

These highly mobile cameras were used as “witness cameras” to capture accurate and up-close stunt actor movements. They were placed on either side of the main picture cameras to capture different angles of what was being recorded.

“Then, using various software programs and hard work, we were able to triangulate exactly where a person was in space at any particular moment, and then overlay a CGI ‘character’ on top of that,” Townsend said of their process.

The Canon cameras also shot some of the scenes that were used in the finished film.

Here, check out the trailer for the film:

Along with a body that weighs a mere three pounds, the Canon EOS C300 also features a removable combination control panel and a four-inch 1.23 megapixel LCD monitor. It can capture images in low light and has a built-in 1.55 megapixel adjustable-angle color electronic viewfinder.

Canon fans have long been showing their love of the brand on Twitter:

  • Iron Man JARVIS App Comes to iOS

Iron Man JARVIS App Comes to iOS

Hardware manufacturers and content creators have been touting “second screen experiences” for quite a while now, but nothing so far has surpassed the interactivity of Twitter and chat apps. Now, Marvel has tried its hand at making a second screen experience, leveraging the popular Iron Man franchise to do it.

Marvel this week released a JARVIS app for iPhone and iPad. The app simulates J.A.R.V.I.S., Iron Man Tony Stark’s artificially intelligent butler in the Iron Man and Avengers movies. The voice is the same as the one from the movies, being voiced by actor Paul Bettany. The app can recognize voice commands to check the weather, post to social media, set alarms, read the time, and set appointments.

The app also has an “interactive” gallery of Iron Man armors for fans to peruse. It will also somehow be able to “sync” with Blu-ray players to be used as a voice remote. Doing so with Iron Man 3 on Blu-ray will unlock some type of exclusive content. A short trailer for the app created by Marvel previews the look of the software and a few of its capabilities:

  • Iron Man 3 Expected To Pass $1 Billion Plateau

Although it may have been the first big release of the Summer Movie Season–no offense to Michael Bay and his Pain & Gain offering–Marvel’s Iron Man 3 has thrown down an impressive arc reactor-powered gauntlet down for the other summer tentpole titles to look up to as their respective release dates approach. While some may be almost dubious to Marvel’s first follow-up to the incredibly successful The Avengers–if the movie was honest, it would’ve been called The Adventures of Tony Stark Without the Iron Man Armor, but I digress–that has not stopped moviegoers from throwing down their hard-earned cash to see Robert Downey, Jr once again shine in what is now his fourth turn in the Iron Man suit.

So much so, in fact, that according to Variety, the third installment in the Iron Man series is expected to break the $1 billion mark sometime this week. It should be noted, however, that this total is a worldwide mark, and not just in the United States. That being said, Iron Man 3 is already number 16 on the all time worldwide box office list regarding box office earnings, as pointed out by Box Office Mojo. For what it’s worth, The Tony Stark Movie has earned almost $300 million in United States.

When you consider how much more is involved to push a movie close the billion dollar level, it just goes to show that, even though Iron Man 3 featured very little of, well, Iron Man in it, the movie is still very much a global-level hit. For me, the question is, is this because the audience loved the movie that much, or did the afterglow of The Avengers mean such a value for the first Marvel Studios movie to follow the second-highest grossing movie ever was pretty much guaranteed, especially when it features Robert Downey, Jr?

  • Iron Man Stunt Goes Wrong in Missouri Theater

Iron Man 3 kicked off the summer movie blockbuster season with a huge opening weekend. One theater in Missouri decided, as many theaters do, to provide a little extra entertainment to die-hard moviegoers who showed up for opening night. Unfortunately, the theater’s management failed to realize that patrons might be a bit worried about fake guns in a movie theater given the Aurora, Colorado shooting that took place during the opening weekend of last year’s big super hero blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises.

According to an Associated Press report, the Goodrich Capital 8 Theatres in Jefferson City, Missouri hired cosplayers to dress up as Marvel characters, including some dressed as members of S.H.I.E.L.D., the paramilitary organization tasked with combating superhuman threats in the Marvel universe. One of the costume-wearers was reported to have carried a prop assault rifle. Complaints were made, and the Jefferson City police were called.

The theater has now made a formal apology through its Facebook page. Capital 8 claims that the incident was not a publicity stunt, and that in the future it will “take the necessary steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” The statement, in full:

    Capital 8 Theatres

    To our customers:

We apologize and are sympathetic to those who felt they were in harm’s way with our character promotion for Iron Man 3. This was not a publicity stunt. We have worked with the Cosplacon group on many movies to dress up and help entertain our customers. We have had many complaints about the members dressed specifically as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives carrying fake guns. We didn’t clearly tell our customers and some people didn’t realize it was for entertainment purposes only. We apologize that police were called to come out to our theater. We have a wonderful working relationship with the Jefferson City Police Department. Going forward we will take the necessary steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Security and safety for our customers is our number one priority.

    Sincerely,

    Capital 8, Goodrich Quality Theaters

  • Iron Man 3 Suits Up On Mobile Devices Next Week

Iron Man 3 premiers in theaters on May 3. Before the theatrical release, Gameloft will be giving mobile gamers a taste of the action with its latest mobile game tie-in.

Iron Man 3 – The Official Game – is a freemium title for iOS and Android that gives players the chance to use 18 of Iron Man’s most iconic suits as Tony Stark battles across various missions.

Some players expressed concern in the YouTube comments that Iron Man 3 will devolve into a shallow cash cow as the game encourages players to spend real money to unlock new weapons and armors. Gameloft says that’s not the case as every armor and weapon can be unlocked through normal gameplay. Of course, the developer doesn’t say just how long players will have to play before unlocking the advance armors, but at least it’s possible.

Iron Man 3 – The Official Game – will be out on iPhone, iPad and Android devices on April 25.

  • Iron Man 3: Chinese Trailer (Taiwanese Animation Style)

Taiwanese animation firm Next Media Animation has put out its own trailer for the much anticipated Iron Man 3. It’s pretty characteristic of NMA’s body of work.

News recently came out that Chinese viewers will see a different cut of Iron Man 3 than other audiences. This video is a take on that.

This one looks a lot better than Iron Man 2.

In case you’re wondering about the dead pigs, this might help.

  • Iron Man 3 Poster Finally Revealed

Earlier today, an image of what appeared to be a final Iron Man 3 poster being displayed outside a movie theater was posted to a tumblr blog.

The leak seems to have caught Marvel and Disney off guard, because an official link to the theatrical poster for Iron Man 3 has now been posted to the Iron Man Facebook page. The poster itself has been posted at Yahoo Movies.

The poster shows Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey, Jr.) in his new gold-and-red Iron Man armor, which appears to be burned off in places. Behind him can be seen other Iron Man suits, implying that Stark and Rhodey (played by Don Cheadle) will not be the only characters using such armor.

Other teaser posters and images for Iron Man 3 have been posted to the Iron Man Facebook page throughout February, including poster’s for Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts, and Ben Kingsley’s villain, the Mandarin.

The movie is scheduled to be released internationally on April 25, and on May 3 in the U.S. Instead of being directed by Jon Favreau, who directed the first two Iron Man movies, Iron Man 3 will be directed by Shane Black, known for directing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

  • Iron Man 3 Holiday Greetings From Tony Stark

In all the commotion surrounding the holidays, it can be hard to keep focus on the really important things. For example, the momentary excitement over a Wii U could, for just a moment, make someone forget that there is a new Iron Man movie being released in less than five months.

Marvel knows this, and the studio sent out a special Christmas reminder this week via the Iron Man Facebook page. A new photo posted to the page features Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, standing in the snow and staring up at a “Happy Holidays” greeting. His arc reactor glows in the twilight as the snowflakes fall.

It’s unclear whether the photo is a still from the upcoming movie or simply a photoshopped teaser for fans. What is clear is that Iron Man 3 will kick off the summer 2013 movie season on May 3, complete with new director Shane Black and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

  • Iron Man 3 Trailer Teaser Uploaded By Marvel

Marvel uploaded a new teaser trailer for Iron Man 3 to its YouTube channel on Sunday. It’s a whopping seventeen seconds long, and some of those seconds are spent without showing actual footage, so don’t expect a whole lot going in. Still, fans of the franchise have something to tide them over until something longer is released.

    Take a look:

The trailer is coming to Apple Trailers on Tuesday.

The film is currently scheduled for a May 3, 2013 release. It is directed by Shane Black based on a screenplay by Black and Drew Pearce. It stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szotak, James Badge Dale, Ben Kingsley, and Jon Favreau.

  • Iron Man 3 Footage Debuts at San Diego Comic Con

Iron Man 3 footage debuted at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, a fact which has caused those who weren’t in attendance plenty of aggravation and irritation, I’m sure. Even as someone who is slowly growing tired of the superhero movie trend, I’m curious to see the footage in action. Since director Jon Favreau is stepping down to allow “Lethal Weapon” scribe Shane Black a chance to tackle the project, it will be interesting to see if the film can stay true to the first two entries in the series. Since a lot of people I know didn’t care for “Iron Man 2” — I didn’t think it was that bad, to be perfectly honest — I suppose the franchise has nowhere to go but up.

According to MSNBC, the footage confirms that Ben Kingsley will, in fact, portray Iron Man’s arch enemy, the nefarious Mandarin. In addition to a “dance sequence” featuring Tony Stark in a brand new suit of body armor, the clip showed our hero’s mansion getting blown to smithereens by an “airborne firing squad”. Apparently every piece of equipment Stark owned gets obliterated as a result, forcing him rebuild from the ground up. Sounds interesting.

Black stated that the film is currently half shot, and as long as they “don’t f–k up the rest, it’s going to be great.” I’m hoping they don’t mess anything up, either, especially since the character is still riding high on the buzz created by “The Avengers”.

  • Iron Man 3 Update: No Iron Patriot?

Iron Man 3 Update: No Iron Patriot?

Word is, regardless of what your eyes told you a few days ago concerning the leaked Iron Patriot images, the next installment of Marvel’s Iron Man movie series will not be featuring the Iron Patriot, not as comic book fans know the character, anyway.

But wait, you say. What about those Iron Patriot images we saw, including the one that this article is leading with? What gives? According to the Latino Review, an incredibly-thorough movie blog, while the armor may indeed look like the comic book version of Iron Patriot, the insider LR spoke to indicates the armor we all saw is, in fact, Don Cheadle’s new armor for Iron Man 3.

In case you forgot, Cheadle plays Colonel Rhodes, and he also dons the War Machine armor, as seen here:

Apparently, Cheadle’s War Machine armor in the IM3 receives a new paint job, but that’s not all. According to Latino Review’s insider, War Machine, because of the new paint job, may, in fact, be called the Iron Patriot, but it won’t be the same character from the comic books. LR’s post offers a little more insight, if you’re trying to stay spoiler-free for next summer’s offering, you might want to stop reading now (potential spoilers ahead):

The US Government has had their hands on this Stark suit for awhile, and apparently they’ve decided to make it more patriotic (especially with the nano-technology stuff I hear is going down in China these days, it’s important for America to look good, not like ‘Iron Man 2′s’ bulky grey War Machine). That’s why the set photo of “Iron Patriot” has the War Machine gun on his back, because it’s NOT Iron Patriot, it’s NOT James Badge Dale, it’s NOT Coldblood-7.

If you’re still reading but don’t know what to make of it, try this: if LR’s insider is accurate, the character wearing the Iron Patriot armor will not be an enemy of Tony Stark/Iron Man. I guess War Machine is too drastic of a name for someone the US Government is trying to portray as a hero, at least in the movies.

  • Iron Man 3: Filming Officially Underway in North Carolina

Iron Man 3 coverage has been through the proverbial roof on just about every entertainment-oriented site on the planet, thanks in part to the smashing success of “The Avengers”, which, according to Box Office Mojo, has currently raked in approximately $1,355,237,000 worldwide. Although we may have to wait a while before that particular endeavor enjoys a sequel, the suits over at Marvel are wasting absolutely no time in getting Iron Man’s latest adventure on the big screen. In fact, it’s already scheduled for release on May 3rd, 2013.

Directed by “Lethal Weapon” scribe Shane Black — who also delivered the immensely underrated action/comedy “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” back in 2005 — “Iron Man 3” finds Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) going up against the villain Mandarin, who will be portrayed by none other than veteran actor Ben Kingsley. Also on-board for the third installment are Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle, and James Badge Dale. Also rumored to be joining the cast is Chinese actor Andy Lau, better known to American audiences as Inspector Lau Kin Ming from the 2002 thriller “Infernal Affairs”.

In order to keep everyone talking about the upcoming production, Marvel has unleashed a brand new photo from the set of the flick. In addition to a shiny row of robotic armor, you’ll also get the opportunity to gaze lovingly at the back of Robert Downey Jr.’s head. I’m assuming that’s Robert Downey Jr., so don’t hold me to that. It may not be much to look at, but beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose.

Ewuh, Iron Man 3? Oh GAWD.

  • Iron Man 3 Villain: First Look At Iron Patriot

With the outrageous success of “The Avengers” earlier this month, one would imagine the movie studios will be hastening to get other films within the comic realm done to cash in on the phenomenon; “Iron Man 3” is no exception. It began production last week, and at least one new photo has been leaked of the film’s central villain, Coldblood.

    (image)

The character, a cybernetically-altered ex-colonel named Eric Savin, is played by James Badge Dale, who is known as Leckie from “The Pacific” and Will from “Rubicon”. The addition of this particular villain has sparked rumors that the film will include a Spiderman tie-in, because Iron Patriot was also the name of a Spidey foe, but that’s unlikely. At any rate, it will be nice to see a bad guy who isn’t a corporate meanie trying to defeat Iron Man and take over the world.

Jon Favreau is back in this installment, as is Gwyneth Paltrow. The movie is expected in May of next year.
