  • iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Officially Up and Running

Today is October 7th, which means that the deluge has begun – folks can now officially pre-order their brand new iPhone 4S for October 14th.

The three carriers who will offer the new phone, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint have all opened the ordering up on their websites. Apple.com is also allowing pre-orders.

The pre-ordering went live around 3 am on Friday.

The device itself will start at $199 for the 16 GB model and jump to $399 for the 64 GB model. The 32 GB middle child will run you $299. As far as the specific carriers go, Sprint is the only one who is currently offering an unlimited data plan. Sprint unlimited data and talk will cost $109.99 a month. AT&T plans range from $54.99 to $134.99 and Verizon plans range from $69.99 to $169.99. For a detailed look at the rate breakdown, Apple has this chart.

Should you spring for the new iPhone 4S? If you missed all the hoopla over its launch, here’s a quick recap on its specs:

On the outside, it looks the same as the iPhone 4. The changes come on the inside – a new dual-core A5 processor that should double the speed of the device and a new 8 MP camera that is able to take some pretty impressive photos. It will come pre-installed with iOS 5, which incorporates Siri, Apple’s voice assistant program that supposedly delivers precise control over texting, searching, and scheduling through speech.

It’s been reported that both AT&T and Apple have been having problems processing all the pre-orders this morning, so it looks like people are anxious to get their hands on the new device despite some of the derision it received upon its unveiling.

  • Steve Jobs Memes Pay Respect to a Visionary

The unfortunate death of Steve Jobs caused massive reverberations around the Internet in particular, as people all over the world paid their respects the one of the great visionaries to grace the tech industry. Twitter and Facebook were two main areas of focus for these messages, but social network outlets were not the only place people were expressing themselves.

A number of memes that paid respect to Apple’s fallen quickly hit the web as well, and the images sub category of Reddit.com did a great job of cataloging these tributes, as well as capturing just how much the death of Steve Jobs resonated around the world.

To help keep the memory of Steve Jobs alive, we’ve collected some of the best memes that have popped up since the announcement. After looking at these, it’s pretty clear just how much Steve Jobs meant to his fans and the tech industry in general:

The next image is of Jobs and his wife, and it was taken after his last keynote speech, again courtesy of Reddit. It’s almost as if they knew that would be his last.

While Reddit has been a fantastic source for these images, even some in the community go a little overboard, as the following collection demonstrates nicely:

    Reddit Overload

Cleary, Reddit members everywhere wanted to get in on the Steve Jobs karma love.

The downpour of Steve Jobs related memes and images just shows how much “pull” he had, especially with Internet users. Whether you are an Apple fan or not — I fall into the “not” category — you cannot deny the impact and the vision Jobs had for the tech industry as a whole. Hell, the iPhone single-handedly turned the Mac brand into a legitimate destination for video games, something the company still struggles with in regards to their home computers.

Just ask the Angry Birds creators, a group that openly acknowledges the role the iPhone played in making the game into the worldwide success it became.

Of course, Jobs’ footprint goes well, well beyond the success of the iPhone, but it’s also obvious just how crucial the device was to the overall success of Apple, which has skyrocketed into becoming the world’s most valuable brand.

All thanks to the genius of Steve Jobs.

  • Steve Jobs Funeral To Be Picketed By Westboro Church

UPDATE: Westboro continues their assault on Steve Jobs.

Fringe religious organization Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ funeral, according to a tweet by top member Margie J Phelps.

Westboro, known by most as the “God Hates Fags” people, travel around the country protesting high profile funerals of celebrities and fallen American soldiers. Their message is predominantly anti-gay and they claim that soldiers’ deaths are punishment from an angry God. They commonly sport signs that read “God hates you,” “America is doomed,” and “You’re going to hell.”

Consensus leans toward strong disapproval of the group, and they are commonly referred to as one of the most despised groups around. But the Supreme Court has upheld their right to protest at these events, saying that their free speech rights cannot be restricted simply because their speech is unpopular or even despicable.

Phelps tweeted this just a few hours ago. Note how the tweet was sent:

Yes, this tweet was sent via Twitter for iPhone. The irony here is almost unbelievable.

No matter what Westboro does at the funeral of Steve Jobs, it appears that Jobs will win in the end – his influence even stretches to an announcement like this.

    Truly amazing.

    Below a statement from Apple:

  • iPhone 5 Rumors Still Alive and Well Despite iPhone 4S

There are a couple ways you could look at the announcement of the iPhone 4S, with regards to the lack of an iPhone 5 announcement.

One way would be that this is the iPhone 5. It just has a different name. Another way would be that the iPhone 5 could still be on the way.

Many news outlets and blogs have reported on iPhone 5 rumors for a long time now. Some were related to what Apple would announce on this past Tuesday, and some were about an as of yet unannounced product. Gawker has a post up looking at a handful of articles from various publications in the tech press indicating “how everyone got it wrong”.

Sure, some were flat out wrong, but other rumors may just not be realized yet.

For example, the first example in the Gawker piece points to the launch of a Facebook iPad app at the Apple event. This didn’t happen, but the app is still expected to be unveiled soon. Timing, yes, dead wrong. It also wasn’t the “iPhone 5” event, as indicated in the article in question. It turned out to be the “iPhone 4S and iPod Nano update” event.

The list of stories about iPhone 5 rumors on the web is a whole lot bigger than the sampling offered by this Gawker article. We’ve certainly published our fair share, but have always been careful to note when a story is a rumor. People like to read about rumors, and get and idea of what to expect. Still, rumors are rumors, and they should always be taken with some amount of salt.

All of that said, the unveiling of the 4S has done absolutely nothing to halt the iPhone 5 rumor mill. For example, they’re already talking about the release being delayed until Apple can implement LTE, as late as late 2012 or even 2013. But it’s a rumor. It’s entirely possible that Apple will never launch a phone called the “iPhone 5”.

It’s a pretty safe bet that “iPhone 5” will continue to be used as the name for Apple phones in rumor pieces about the next such offering from Apple until either Apple says flat out that there will be no iPhone 5 or it becomes clear in some other fashion.

In the meantime, the responsible reporters and bloggers talking about this stuff will call a rumor a rumor until it becomes fact.

  • Make Your New iPhone 4S Cheaper With Apple’s Reuse and Recycling Program

With the announcement of the brand new iPhone 4S, many loyal Apple customers will be opting to upgrade their mobile devices in the near future. If you plan on grabbing an iPhone 4S when it hits the shelves on October 14th, what are you going to do with your 3GS or plain old iPhone 4?

Instead of leaving it in a drawer somewhere or throwing it out, why not recycle it and possibly make a little bit of cash in the process.

    That’s Apple cash, mind you.

Many people don’t know that Apple has a “Reuse and Recycle” program for your old Apple devices. With this program, you can send Apple your gently used iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and they might just send you a gift card redeemable at Apple Stores (both retail and online).

Here are the steps to finding out if your device is worth anything:

First, go to the reuse and recycling page to get started. Once there, you’ll be prompted to enter the basic information for your device – for instance a black 32GB iPhone 4.

The next step is to give some more details about your device, whether is still works properly, the battery life, the outside condition, etc.

Apple will then give you an estimate (with the help of electronic recyclers PowerON) for the value of your used device. It could range anywhere from a few bucks to a couple hundred. For example, the functional black 32GB iPhone 4 with minor dings but no significant case damage is estimated to be worth $140. Of course, the estimate is just that – an estimate. The final determination will be made upon actual inspection of the device.

But hey, if you plan on purchasing an iPhone 4S, why not get a little cash from your now-totally-obsolete phone?

  • iPhone 4S Videos: Device, iOS 5, Siri & iCloud

This week, Apple unveiled the the iPhone 4S, its next-generation iPhone. A lot of people were disappointed because they wanted an iPhone 5 with something more. A lot of people were happy with the news, however – especially those waiting for Sprint to get an iPhone.

Following is a quick video round-up looking at the some highlights from the unveiling and some features:

    iCloud:

    iOS 5:

There was also some iPod Nano news, and CNET is sharing a video looking at that:

  • Sprint iPhone 4S Release Date: October 14

Sprint iPhone 4S Release Date: October 14

Apple announced the iPhone 4S today. It’s not the iPhone 5, and it looks a lot like the iPhone 4, but at least it comes in white right off the bat. It also has some other nice features that the iPhone 4 doesn’t – namely Siri and a beefed up camera. And of course it will launch with Apple’s new operating system iOS 5.

The most significant part of today’s iPhone news, however, is that the device is coming to Sprint (in addition to AT&T and Verizon). This should be huge for both Sprint and Apple.

Apple will sell a lot of iPhone 4S devices. There’s little doubt about that, but how many iPhone 4 users will upgrade, rather than waiting for the iPhone 5 or whatever the next version is. Are the new features enough? The iPhone 4 still gets iOS 5. These users aren’t going to missing out on iCloud or anything.

The iPhone 4S is so similar in appearance, you have to wonder how many will make the leap. Again, there will no doubt be quite a few, but how many more would have if Apple launched an iPhone 5 with a whole new look, and packed with revolutionary new features not available on the iPhone 4?

The Sprint news, however, will likely mean a whole lot of new iPhone users, simply because Sprint has never been able to offer an iPhone to its customers. That doesn’t mean those customers didn’t wish that Sprint offered one. In fact, the lack of an iPhone has probably cost Sprint quite a few customers.

Likewise, there will just be that may more people buying iPhones over Android devices and others.

Here’s some Twitter reaction to the Sprint iPhone news:

  • iPhone 4S Announced

At its iPhone Event, Apple revealed the iPhone 4S with retina display and the A5 chip.

View more coverage of Apple’s announcements here.

That means it’s up to twice as fast as the previous iPhone 4, and has dual-core graphics that are supposed to be 7 times faster.

    iPhone 4S

According to Apple, battery life is as follows:

    3G Talk Time – 8 hours

    2G Talk Time – 14 hours

    3G Browsing – 6 hours

    Wi-Fi Browsing – 9 hours

    Video – 10 hours

    Music – 40 hours

It also has better call quality, the company says. Presumably no antenna issues this time. It switches between two antennas as needed.

Apple is making the case that this will be great device for games, and demoed “Infinity Blade II” on the device. The game comes out December 1 in the App Store.

Downloads are supposed to be 2 times faster than the iPhone 4.

The 4S is both GSM and CDMA, and it has a new camera with an 8 megapixel sensor (3264 X 2448 – 60% more pixels). It also has backside illumination for 73% more light and 33% faster capture. There’s a hybrid IR filter, better color accuracy and more color uniformity, as well as a five-element lens, 30% more sharpness and f/2.4 aperture.

Then, there’s an image signal processor designed by Apple itself, which enables face detection and 25% better auto white balance.

It has 1080p HD video recording, video image stabilization and temporal noise reduction.

It also comes with AirPlay of course, where you can get stuff on on your TV. Apple plays up the gaming aspect once again.

It also comes with the rumored, awesome voice controls from Siri, where you can simply ask it questions and tell it things and it understands and gets you what you need accordingly (at least in theory).

Here’s a past demo of Siri:

It’s releasing with black and white versions (amen, we won’t have to write about waiting for the white version!).

    Pricing is as follows:

    16B – $199
    32GB – $299
    64GB – $399

They call this “the most amazing iPhone yet.”

No iPhone 5? What do you want? It’s just a name isn’t it?

iOS 5 will be released on October 12.

Those are two-year contract prices. The iPhone 4 will now be $99 for 8GB and the 3GS will be free with a contract.

Pre-orders for the 4S will start on Friday. It will be available on October 14th. It will be available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Japan.

In the US, it will be available for AT&T, Verizon, and even Sprint, giving Sprint its first iPhone. That should be good for business.

It will hit 22 additional countries on October 28th, and will be in 70 countries by the end of the year through 100 carriers, according to Apple.

More to come. View more coverage on Apple’s announcements here.

  • Apple Introduces ‘Find My Friends’

The often rumored “Find My Friends” app is now a reality, as it was just announced at Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” media event by Eddy Cue.

Cue took the stage and stated: “Invite your friends to share for a few hours while they’re driving to your pad, so when they call you lost you can more easily re-route them.”

The app is a location based social network – similar to Loopt or Google Latitude. You’ll see a list of friends and family who are sharing their location with you, you can create events and can even invite friends share with you. One neat feature is that you’ll have the capability to set a time for the location-sharing to end.

Apple was also quick to note that their are parental controls, which should cut down on that iStalking.

It’ll be interesting to see how this app plays out for Apple.

  • iOS 5 Release Date: October 12 (Official)

iOS 5 will be released on October 12, Apple announced today at the iPhone event. It’s been expected any time this fall, but now we have a solid date, and it’s coming up.

iOS 5 was announced months ago, and will come with lots of new features. Read all about it here.

Of course a major feature of that is iCloud, which the company touted once again today. It will also be shipped October 12.

There’s not a lot new in this part of the discussion as far as I can tell, other than the release date.

iTunes Match (which was announced with iCloud), will be out at the end of the month, by the way.

It will be on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch 3rd and 4th generations.

But what about the iPhone 5? Oh the suspense.

    Stay tuned for more.

  • iPhone 5 Rumor: Larger Storage Capacities Upcoming?

How much information will the upcoming iPhone 5 store when it hits the markets in the near future? If the rumblings are to be believed, the newest iPhone will match the storage capacity of its iPad cousin/brother/relative.

According to a report in 9to5Mac, there will be three different storage capacities for the device, which could be available in 16, 32, and 64 gigabyte sizes. Not only that, but the various capacity devices will be available in both black and white. Of course, sifting through all these rumors could very well be an exercise in futility/wishful thinking, but the information about the new device’s capacity sizes has hit the wires and is being widely reported by various publications.

Whether or not the new device is an actual iPhone 5 or if it is the iPhone 4s, the grapevine is pretty solid in its belief the new devices will have an increased capacity. The following block from 9to5Mac demonstrates as much, provided the rumor pans out:

In all fairness, it is also plausible that the new iPhone will come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities, but the appearance of a tweaked iPhone 4 (N90A) seems to refute that. Provided that the 8GB iPhone 4 rumor is correct, it would make little sense for Apple to produce both an 8GB iPhone 4 and an 8GB iPhone 4S.

As indicated, the capacity story is a hot topic around the web, including Twitter, where the rumor is being treated, for the most part, as fact:

Hey guys!! iPhone 5 To Come With 64GB Of Storage: There have been many rumors about the iPhone … http://t.co/yDSgyh6h <3 @gizmo_fusion 1 hour ago via twitterfeed · powered by @socialditto

iPhone 5/4S to Debut with 64GB Storage Option http://t.co/b6fCL125 1 hour ago via twitterfeed · powered by @socialditto

Some have begun speculating about prices for these increased capacity devices, and if the following guess is true, one wonders what the 64 gig model will cost:

Assuming storage and price structure doesn’t change with the iPhone 5, looks like I can expect to pay $500 for a new 32GB iPhone. 3 days ago via Twitter for Mac · powered by @socialditto

So? $750 for a 64-gigabyte model? If so, would you be as apt to lay down that kind of money for such a mobile device? What if it’s only $600? With that in mind, does this mean Apple is envisioning the upcoming devices as something much more than a mobile communication device? Let us know what you think.

  • Flickr Android App Channeling Instagram?

    Flickr Android App Channeling Instagram?

Did Flickr essentially release an Instagram clone? And if so, is there something wrong with that? Considering imitation is the highest from of flattery, and Flickr’s undeniable popularity, copying such a popular app, especially one that focuses on images — Flickr’s lifeblood — only makes sense.

The Flickr Android app promises photo sharing, filter enhancement, and the ability to share these creations across multiple social network platforms, which is pretty much what Instagram does for the iPhone crowd. The Android app shared its debut with another Flickr launch, a service called Photo Session. According to the Flickr blog, Photo Session allows users to:

… flip through photos with your friends from anywhere in the world. Just create a Photo Session, invite your friends and browse photos together in real-time. When you move to the next photo it moves for everyone else too. While you’re all browsing, have fun chatting and drawing on your photos using the built-in tools.

Unlike the Instagram imitation, Photo Session is supported by the iOS family, so you can use it on your iPhone and iPad. There’s a video of Photo Session in action, and it too takes some cues from Instagram, especially with the filters and the sharing:

The difference being, Photo Session is more like a Google Hangout, while the Flickr Android app is more a direct descendant of the Instagram application. Is that, however, a bad thing? Or is the iPhone family the only device that should be allowed such capabilities, especially if the Instagram developers show no interest in cross-platforming their application? Over at International Business Times, one idea was offered about the Android app:

While Flickr boasts 68 million registered users of its own, the platform is likely jealous of Instagram, which has amassed a whopping 10 million users in less than a year since launching.

Is it really jealously that led to the development of the similar application, or did Flickr simply fill a hole the Instagram makers were unwilling or unable to do? Sure, the app comparisons are valid, but if the demand for the application on the Android environment is there, and no one has stepped up to meet it, it sounds like Flickr merely struck while the iron was hot.

Kudos to them for stepping up where Instagram did not. The next question is, will the Flickr Android app be as popular as its iPhone predecessor?

  • iPhone 5 Rumor: To Release With New Facebook App, Facebook iPad App

There has been an incredible amount of anticipation for the iPhone 5, and it’s expected to be unveiled at an Apple event on October 4.

Something else that has been widely anticipated by Apple fans is the launch of a Facebook iPad app, and according to a report from Mashable, this too will launch at that event along with a new Facebook iPhone app.

There’s been a fair amount of drama in the news this week about the launch of the iPad app (or lack thereof). The engineer who created it put up a blog post that’s been making the rounds, saying that he left Facebook for Google, partially because the company wouldn’t released the app, which has been completed since May.

Perhaps Facebook wanted to get its huge new announcements out there first (Timeline, new Open Graph, etc.). Facebook is changing a lot now, you know.

Apple, on the other hand, announced that iOS 5 would be fully integrated with Facebook rival Twitter.

According to Mashable, whose sources are cited as “two sources familiar with the situation,” Facebook may also be announcing its rumored HTML5 mobile platform.

  • Apple Rumor: iPhone 5 Successor To Sport Curved Glass Display?

With Apple devices, the only thing more fun than speculating about the next big device is speculating about the next big device that will follow the next big device. Consider this little rumor as just that – speculation about Apple’s next-next-gen devices.

According to “industry sources,” Apple is planning on using curved glass displays in their upcoming devices – not the upcoming devices that most people think will launch next month, but in devices that will launch in 2012. This could include all of their products that run iOS, including iPhones and iPads.

DigiTimes reports that Apple’s competitors are ramping up for curved-screen products as a way to compete with the iPhone. But Apple is also apparently ready for curved glass displays –

Apple reportedly also has bought glass polishing equipment for its suppliers in preparation for the production of devices fitted with curved cover glass. Lens Technology, Fuji Crystal, G-Tech are said to be major cover glass suppliers of Apple. While Lens and Fuji focus on iPhones, G-Tech supplies mainly for iPad.

This is not the first time we’ve heard talk about Apple experimenting with curved glass displays for their devices. Back in May, reports emerged that said Apple had purchased a couple hundred glass cutting machines built specifically for curved glass.

If there’s any truth to this rumor, Apple wouldn’t be the first to give a phone a curvy look. The Android-powered Nexus S, HTC Sensation and Dell Venue all sport curved glass displays.

Apple and “curved glass” also have another connection, as the brand new Cupertino campus that has been proposed by Steve Jobs would feature a giant curved glass window around its circular frame.

Folks expect that the iPhone 5 (and possibly a 4S) will be unveiled at the next big Apple media event, rumored to be taking place on October 4th. That would mean that the iPhone 5 would hit shelves sometime in mid-October.

But those devices aren’t expected to feature curved glass. This new curved glass design would only affect devices into 2012, possibly an iPad 3 or the iPhone 6. Would you want your Apple products to sport this kind of display? Let us know what you think.
