  • Apple Earnings Show iPhones Sold Faster Than Babies Are Born

Apple released their Q4 earnings yesterday, and reported a record revenue of $46.33 billion and a record net profit of $13.06 billion. Not only are these figures all-time records, but they absolutely demolished all expectations ($38 billion revenue).

As part of those earnings, they also reported that during the quarter, they sold 37.04 million iPhones. That number sounds huge (and it is), but once you get to talking about tens of millions, things become a little abstract.

So think about it this way: Every day, there are more iPhones sold than babies born…worldwide.

Once you take that 37.04 million sold during the quarter figure and divide it by the 98-day period in question, you get that Apple sells about 378,000 iPhones every day. The average birth rate worldwide clocks in at 371,000 a day.

As The Next Web points out, birth rate is always a moving figure and Apple’s Q4 returns were bolstered by the holiday shopping season – but damn. That’s one hell of a comparison.

While fascinating, that comparison is rather arbitrary. This comparison, however, is truly astonishing:

Apple’s profits ($13 billion) exceeded Google’s entire revenue ($10.6 billion). 17 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

  • Steve Jobs Had Grand Plans For iPhone Camera

Steve Jobs believed that people should “Think different.” His vision for Apple has changed the way the world works. But, Jobs had plans just prior to his death to make a leap forward in one particular area.

Jobs didn’t just want to improve the camera on the iPhone, he wanted a completely new kind of camera altogether. To that end, he contacted photography company Lytro about the very different technology they were building into their products.

Lytro’s “Light Field Camera” products handle light differently than most cameras. They capture the entire light field, not just a single pane of light in a shutter snap. In this way, you capture a moment with the camera, then decide after the fact what gets focus.

Jobs saw this technology as perfect for the iPhone and pursued getting his people together with Lytro’s people before he died.

  • Verizon’s Push Pays Off Big Time!

Today Verizon Wireless announced that they have added 1.5 million new customers over the last quarter and that smartphones are on the rise big time! Last quart only 39% of users were on smartphones, now over 44% of their total wireless subscribers are using them. This is no doubt due to the great incentives Verizon sponsors in order to attract new users. Smart phones are selling like mad and the trend is expected to continue.

In fact, the company is experiencing their biggest sales growth in three years. To keep the momentum rolling they have turned to the iPhone. Rumors have been confirmed that Verizon will begin to offer the sought after Apple phone in early February. Analysts expect Verizon to sell roughly 13 million iPhones this year. The iPhone will be a welcome addition for Verizon’s already popular smartphone line, which feature Google’s Android operating system.

But the wireless segment is not the only area that experienced growth in this last quarter. Their wireline industry also grew by adding more than 200,000 new FiOS internet user’s and almost 200,000 new FiOS video connection customers.

While it isn’t clear how the iPhone will impact the bottom line at Verizon, it appears they are heading in the right direction again this year.

  • Over A Third Of iPhone Buyers Switched From Android, BlackBerry

Over A Third Of iPhone Buyers Switched From Android, BlackBerry

The iPhone 4S launch in October was met with high level of demand that has become customary for the launch of new Apple products. Of course, not all of those people lining up for new iPhones are current iPhone users, raising the question of where they all come from.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners has released a study today that sheds some light on the issue. According to their data, 18% of those who bought the iPhone 4S at its launch in October were switching from other smartphone platforms like BlackBerry and Android. For October, November, and December 2011 combined, that number jumps to 36%.

Additionally, CIRP’s data showed that the iPhone has had a significant impact on the market shares of the major carriers. Three of the four major carriers – AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint – carry the iPhone. The fourth, T-Mobile, does not. CIRP’s data showed that T-Mobile lost market share during the first three months of the iPhone 4S’s availability, while the other three maintained their market share.

Interestingly, the fact that 36% of new iPhone buyers were coming from other platforms seems not to have had much of an impact on those other platforms’ market share. According to an analysis released by StatCounter at the end of 2011, BlackBerry and Android continued fairly steadily in their respective trends throughout the last quarter of 2011. BlackBerry declined steadily throughout 2011, and showed no change in the rate of decline during the three months the iPhone 4S was available. Android, meanwhile, continued its steady climb throughout the year (even surpassing the iPhone in late summer), though it did show a very slight levelling off in October, around the time of the iPhone 4S’s launch.

  • iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Jailbreak Gets A Million Downloads In 24 Hours

Last week we brought you news that Absinthe, the long-awaited jailbreak for A5-powered iOS 5 devices – iPhone 4S and iPad 2 – was finally available from Greenpois0n. The rush to download the new jailbreak was so great, in fact, that the Greenpois0n site was down for much of the day, and users had difficulty downloading the Absinthe. Moreover, those who did manage to download it had couldn’t install it, because it required contact with Greenpois0n’s servers to activate.

Server difficulties notwithstanding, though, Absinthe was a hit. Joshua Hill, jailbreak developer from the Chronic Dev Team, told Cult of Mac that Absinthe was downloaded over a million times in the first 24 hours of availability. What’s more, all of those one million downloads came before the Windows version of Absinthe was even available, meaning that the amazing first day numbers only account for Mac users. This makes Absinthe the most popular download-based jailbreak tool ever.

Since the initial release of the Mac version of Absinthe, we’ve seen the release of the Windows version and an update. Download numbers for the Windows version are not available at present, but it’s safe to say they are probably pretty high also.

If you’re interested in jailbreaking your iPhone 4S, check out Greenpois0n’s website to download Absinthe.

Are you one of the million who downloaded Absinthe on the first day? Have you downloaded it since? Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

  • Evi: Siri Competitor Comes To iOS And Android

Ever since the iPhone 4S launched last October, owners of other devices – including older iPhones – have been drooling over Siri, the 4S’s integrated voice-activated assistant. The iPhone’s “killer app” has prompted quite a bit of imitation and a few outright ripoffs. At the end of last year we brought you a story about Speerit, an Android app that egregiously copies nearly everything about Siri except the name. At the beginning of this year, a similar app, Siri For Android, was pulled from the App Market. Meanwhile, there are also legitimate apps that offer Siri-like functionality, including at least one for the Windows Phone operating system.

Most of these apps have one thing in common (apart from imitating Siri’s functionality): they are only available for non-iOS phones. To date there are precious few iOS apps that bring Siri-like functionality to non-iPhone 4S devices. Now, however, there is a new app that promises to do just that. Evi is a personal assistant app billed as “revolutionary artificial intelligence here to help with all of your everyday information needs.” Promising plain English search (like Siri), Evi offers to help you look up just about anything. Options include location-based searches, trivia, and a wide array of others.

Evi is available for both iOS and Android. The iOS app is compatible with iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches running iOS 4.0 or later, however it is not a universal app, which means it will display as an iPhone app when run on the iPad. The Android version is free, while the iOS version is $0.99. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Stuckup Stickers iPhone App Allows Users To Tag, Share Info On Sticker Art

Stuckup Stickers iPhone App Allows Users To Tag, Share Info On Sticker Art

Whether you’re just a curious admirer of the street stickers you’ve seen stuck to signs or telephone poles in your city or if you are an artist who wants to keep up with your wares, having an iPhone could now be a helpful accessory to your interest.

A new app called StuckUp Stickers from the sticker art group Stuck-Up Piece of Crap allows iPhone users to geotag and index any sticker you see out there in the world. You simply take a photo of the sticker, whether it’s a band sticker or just a single odd sticker that caught your eye, and it will automatically upload the sticker and share the information (however much you wish to provide) with other StuckUp users. A couple of screen shots can be seen below:

The app was developed by All City Street Art & Graffiti, who also developed a similar app in order to document streetart and graffiti. I’ll go ahead and proffer this consideration: you probably won’t have much use for this app unless you live in a city that has a well-supported and active artist community. Then again, you probably know your town well enough to already know if you’ll get any mileage out of the StuckUp Stickers app.

As of right now, no word on whether this will be released to the Android Marketplace. Regardless, go unlock some of those artistic mysteries floating around your neighborhood and tell us what you think of the app in the comment section.

  • Is Apple Finally Increasing The iPhone’s Screen Size?

Is Apple Finally Increasing The iPhone’s Screen Size?

Many things have changed about the iPhone since the first one launched back in 2007. One thing that has remained constant, however, is the phone’s screen size. Retina display notwithstanding, Apple’s fifth iPhone – the iPhone 4S – sports the same 3.5-inch screen as their first iPhone.

The fact that Apple has kept the iPhone’s screen size consistent through five generations of phones has not stopped repeated speculation that the next iPhone would have a bigger screen. Now Chris Caso, analyst for Susquehanna, is predicting that Apple’s sixth iPhone will finally be getting a larger screen. In a note sent to clients this morning, Caso predicted that Apple would begin production of their sixth-generation iPhone – which most analysts are calling the iPhone 5 – in June of 2012, and that it would sport a 4-inch screen.

This is going to have to go in the “believe it when I see it” file. As already noted, Apple has consistently – almost stubbornly – kept the iPhone’s screen size the same. As Android phones of all sizes have come into the market, Apple has held to the 3.5-inch screen. While anything is certainly possible, Apple tends to be a creature of habit when it comes to things that work, and the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen has worked well through five generations of iPhones. It doesn’t seem likely that they’ll change it now.

  • Samsung Takes A Dig At Apple Fans In New Ad

Samsung has released a new ad making fun of iPhone fans. Entitled “Samsunged” the ad takes a subtle shot at the iPhone’s battery life issues, and picks on the iPhone’s lack of built-in turn-by-turn navigation. It shows a group of would-be iPhone buyers waiting in line outside an Apple store, talking with a hipster (complete with fixed-gear bike) about his Samsung Galaxy S II phone. When they realize that his phone comes with turn-by-turn navigation functionality built in, one of them says “We just got Samsunged.” Yes, “Samsunged.” Check it out for yourself below:

As commercials go, it’s hardly the worst I’ve seen, but it comes across as one of those ads that really wants to be clever but doesn’t quite manage it. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

  • SoulCalibur Comes To iOS

    SoulCalibur Comes To iOS

Namco has brought their popular fighting game SoulCalibur to iOS devices today. The game is available as a universal iOS app in the Apple App Store as of this morning. It currently sells for $11.99 thanks to a 20% off release sale (making the regular price $14.99). There is no word on when the price will go back up.

    SoulCalibur for iOS

SoulCalibur was originally released in 1998 as an arcade game. It was ported to the Sega Dreamcast the following year, and has since spawned six sequels, including the planned SoulCalibur V, which is due to release later this year. The iOS version is getting pretty good reviews in the App Store, though some are complaining about the lack of multiplayer. If you feel like ponying up twelve bucks for it, check it out and let us know what you think in the comments (iTunes link).

  • iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Absinthe Jailbreak Finally Released

The long-awaited jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, dubbed Absinthe, has finally been released today. Jailbreak developer Joshua Hill posted the following on his Twitter profile less than an hour ago:

OSX version of A5 jailbreak posted on http://t.co/i9c8VjbD 57 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

The jailbreak is currently available only for Mac users, though Hill promised that the Windows version is coming very soon:

Windows version of Absinthe is coming as soon as nikias gets home and rolls up the build 51 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Those who wish to download Absinthe can do so at Greenpois0n. The site’s servers are currently under an extremely heavy load, however, so it may take awhile to get through. A direct download link is available here, but since the jailbreak requires contacting Greenpois0n’s servers, would-be jailbreakers are still out of luck until the site comes back online. Absinthe is designed to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, so if you plan to jailbreak and haven’t updated your iPhone or iPad recently, you might want to go ahead and do that while you wait for Greenpois0n to come back up.

  • Foobang! Is Instant Papa-Paparazzi For Your iPhone

If keeping up with your favorite celebrities’ multiple social media accounts, latest news or rumors of what they happened to have eaten at Del Posto last night, guess what – say it with me – there’s an app for that now.

Foobang! is a newly available app for iPhone that aggregates every bit of news information of your preferred celebrities into a source on your phone. The break down the goods on their website:

In a matter of seconds, you can instruct Foobang! to retrieve information about your favourite stars, athletes, TV show hosts, models and politicians.

Foobang! continuously crawls thousands of sites, blogs, and Twitter feeds for the information you want the most.

Thanks to its push notification system, you’ll always be the first to be informed. As soon as any article on one of your favourite celebrities is published, it is instantly analysed and sent to your phone.

If you’re wondering about the stalkery applications of this iPhone app, uh… yeah. Watch this movie that Foobang! put together that I guess is supposed to show you how easy it is to follow around celebrities but leaves me feeling very disturbed with how it’s narrated. Do they really want you to use the app this way? Ugh. Just watch it.

    See what I mean? Stalker-ific.

If that’s your thing, though, Foobang! could be an asset to you. As you see below, it basically crawls “thousands of sites” on the Internet for every crumb of information about your victim target celebrity of choice:

Celebrity gossip is ubiquitous enough in our culture that Foobang! isn’t really encouraging a new habit in people – it’s just streamlining the existing habits of people who already follow celebrities’ lives into one convenient iPhone app. Still, I’m pretty sure that if you use the app the way the uncomfortably curious gentleman in the Foobang! video above uses it, it’s likely that Foobang! will not pay for your court costs when you are arrested for stalking famous people who really want to eat their dinner in peace. So caveat emptor, iPhone users/celebrity followers: the app is currently available in the iPhone Apps Store.

  • AT&T Raises Data Caps, Rates For Smartphone And Tablet Customers

AT&T Raises Data Caps, Rates For Smartphone And Tablet Customers

AT&T has announced an adjustment to its data plans for smartphone and tablet customers. Under the current plans, mobile phone and tablet users can choose to pay $15 per month for 200MB of data and $25 for 2GB. Mobile phone users also have the option of paying $45 for 4GB with mobile hotspot and tethering functionality enabled. When the new plans go into effect on Sunday, each plan gets a $5 bump in price, along with an increase in data allowance. The new plans are $20 for 300MB, $30 for 3GB, or $50 for 5GB with mobile hotspot/tethering.

Of course, those with older plans are not required to switch. AT&T allows older plans to be renewed indefinitely as long as customers don’t make changes to their data plans. Case in point, I’m still carrying around a vintage 2008 unlimited data plan on my iPhone 4S, even though the plan was discontinued in 2010. So, if you’re happy with your current data plan and want to keep it you can, provided you never need to upgrade.

The new plans go into effect on Sunday, January 22nd.

  • Delta Knows We Hate Delays and Love Twitter, Wi-Fi, & Facebook

I love to fly, but what I hate are the lines, the delays, and the impersonal service. To top it all off, on long flights, I feel like i’m in a time warp and out of touch with reality during the whole process. No cell phone usage, no internet connection, and occasionally being forced to watch some movie I’d rather not see. So maybe I really don’t like to fly.

Delta Airlines is trying to combat these exact problems for their clients. It started about a year ago when the airline introduced the Facebook Ticket Counter App. The application allows flyers to check in on Facebook, view in-flight amenities and entertainment, and share flight details with friends and family.

Communication doesn’t stop there, gripes and bitches can be lodged on Twitter. Technical issues can be resolved via Delta assist. This is especially helpful if you have a smart phone. iPhone, Blackberry and android all have apps (Fly Delta app) available to alert customers about parking issues, airport specifics, tracking baggage, paying for extra baggage, and travel updates.

If you’re feeling a little disconnected during flights, like me, Delta is nearing completion on a project to install in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 800 of their aircraft. What else is cool is that they have even upgraded their top 19 airports to include branded charging stations. Great news if your ambition exceeds your battery life.

So what else can you ask for? Flying is still going to be a pain in the ass but at least you can surf the net and find your baggage right from your seat. If you’re having a crappy flight you can complain to corporate right from your seat in mid-flight!

PC World Magazine recently named Delta “Top Tech-Friendly U.S. Airline” because of all the innovations they have made. If you’re a tech savvy flyer, you may want to check out Delta for your next flight. If you’re like me and can’t tolerate the inefficiencies of air travel, it may provide some relief.

  • Verizon Expanding 4G LTE Network To Five New Markets

Verizon announced today that they are expanding their 4G LTE network. The network will be activated in five new markets tomorrow and expanded in three others. Tomorrow’s launches bring the total number of markets with access to the 4G network to 195.

Verizon will flip the switch tomorrow on networks in Glens Falls and Utica in New York, Brownsville and McAllen in Texas, and Lawton, Oklahoma. Networks in Atlanta, Houston, and Spokane are being expanded.

    Verizon 4G Coverage Map

Users connected to Verizon’s 4G network should generally experience downlink rates from 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps), and uplink speeds of 2-5 Mbps.

Verizon offers a wide variety of 4G devices on its network, including LG’s Spectrum, which was announced at CES 2012, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, and Motorola’s Droid line of phones. The iPhone 4S is not LTE capable, so it cannot run on Verizon’s network (a problem AT&T worked around by dual-layering their LTE network with an HSPA+ network, which the iPhone 4S is compatible with). The next-generation iPhone, presumably coming this summer, will probably have LTE capability.

  • General Electric and Apple

General Electric is a company that has been around for 120 years and has a reputation synonomous with houshold appliances and lightbulbs. Executives at the company report that one of their largest challenges is convincing their workforce that they are modern and hip to new technology.

Testing the support of Apple products in the office, GE began a program last year to replace some of their 330,000 PC’s with Macs; though only about 1000 Macs have been put into place. About two years earlier, a year after the iPhone was introduced, GE gave employees the option to replace their Blackberry with an iPhone. While the popularity of the iPhone is still growing, only about 10,000 out of 60,000 have taken the option.

A recent IDG survey reported that Apple products popularity in the work place is on the rise overall. In fact, 83% of businesses won’t consider buying anything but Apple brand at all. The same study reports that over 90% of the iPads being used, are used for business.

  • Find My iPhone Aids In Drug Bust

I guess the moral of this story is if you’re going to steal a smartphone – wait, just don’t steal people’s phones. Because if you do, karma might bite you in the ass.

Karma, in this case, comes in the form of Apple’s Find My iPhone feature. The built-in app allows users to track their lost devices using the iCloud and GPS. If you find yourself missing your iPhone, you can log in to the iCloud from another device and pinpoint the exact location of the device. This, of course, assumes that you previously enabled the Find My iPhone feature.

UPI is reporting that Find My iPhone has led to a interesting drug bust in Marietta, Georgia.

After an iPhone was reported missing in the early morning hours on Tuesday, police used the Find My iPhone app to track the device to an apartment building. When they approached the door, one suspect tried to jump off a second-floor balcony. Unsuccessful, the police grabbed him and found the stolen iPhone on his body.

But what they also found was 1,100 grams of pot, five handguns (3 of them stolen), 42 tablets of oxycodone and an assault rifle.

Two suspects were subsequently hit with theft, weapons and narcotics charges.

You can add this to the growing list of idiot criminals that are foiled by technology. Want more? Check out idiot admits to brutal beating on Facebook, and after that, how about idiot taunts police on Facebook? If you want to go back even more, read about the rioting idiots that talked about vandalizing cop cars on social media or even drunk idiot who calls 911 because his iPhone “wont work.”

  • Are You Getting Throttled By Your Cellular Carrier?

Are You Getting Throttled By Your Cellular Carrier?

If you’re in the top five percent of data users on your cellular providers network than the following news about throttling may be of interest to you. Carriers like AT&T and others are apparently implementing measures to limit data usage for their top 5% of data consumers (especially after customers reach the 1 GB/month mark).

The following video by AppAdvice illustrates how data speeds are being adjusted after heavy data use:

Throttled devices upload speeds are similar or unaffected however; download speeds are slowed considerably. The above side-by-side comparison video indicates 2 MB/sec. on a non-throttled device versus .2 MB/sec. on a throttled device. In some cases this renders a device practically useless for downloading.

  • RIM May Be Looking To Sell; Is Samsung Buying?

To say that Research In Motion has been having a rough year would be putting it mildly. In fact, they’ve had several rough years in a row. BlackBerry’s market share has plummeted as the company has struggled and failed to remain relevant in an industry now thoroughly owned by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android operating system.

Now it looks like RIM may be getting desperate. Citing “trusted sources,” BGR is reporting that the company is shopping around for buyers. Whether they plan to sell off individual divisions or the entire company is apparently still up in the air at this point. If BGR’s sources are to be believed, the company is ready to sell whatever they can to whoever will buy. The asking price for the whole company would probably be in the $10-12 billion range, though whether anyone would be willing to pay that is unclear. Samsung and HTC have been floated as potential buyers, but there is little solid information at this point.

RIM unveiled updates to their BlackBerry and PlayBook operating systems at CES last week to generally positive reviews. Nevertheless there have been increasing signs in recent months that BlackBerry was on the way out. In November they announced BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, which would allow BlackBerry’s vaunted security and IT management platform to work with iOS and Android devices. The move was seen by many as RIM’s acknowledgement that BlackBerry had lost hegemony in the business world. Then, late last month, there was another report from inside RIM claiming that the launch of the much anticipated BlackBerry 10 phone was being delayed because RIM couldn’t get a decently functional prototype of the device.

All in all, it looks like we may be moving quickly toward the last days of RIM, at least in its current form. Whether the company is sold off piecemeal or all at once, there are certainly big changes on the horizon.

  • One Brave Developer Puts Android First

One Brave Developer Puts Android First

It’s a tough market out there for social and mobile games, even tougher for Android-based games. One developer is aiming to bypass that and make Android development profitable.

TechCrunch is reporting that Bionic Panda Games, a new Android-focused game developer, is making waves in the Android device game development field. The company chose Android not because of its position as a superior platform, but because it has the highest number of users.

Their first game, Aqua Pets, is similar to the countless fish raising games that were around even before Facebook. These things have been around since the days of Shockwave and they’re still popular. The game has managed to snag 3 million downloads on Android, and is one of the platforms top 100 grossing apps.

The company has hit its stride when it announced it has received funding from numerous sources including Google Ventures and 500 Startups.

Bionic Panda’s founder, Charles Hudson, said that the developer is focusing on the casual market. “The nice thing is that these games tend to have big mass market hits — which gives you the ability to benefit from volume and scale on the Android platform.”

Aqua Pets, like other freemium games, relies on a monetization method that attracts players with a free game and then introduces micro-payments to unlock new features and items in-game. It’s an incredibly effective method, just look at Zynga and their “Ville” games.

Hudson finds the biggest issue with the Android platform is the payment system. Hudson told TechCrunch that he is a believer in Google Wallet, but it has lower monetization rates than games on the iOS platform.

The problem lies in the fact that Google Wallet has far less credit cards on file. Apple had been in a superior position from the start since they tied existing iTunes accounts into their iOS App store on iDevices. Users on both devices can make one click purchases, but Android users have to set up an account first. This small obstacle is apparently a deterrent to setting up a Google Wallet account.

Hudson finally said that his company is not just solely focused on Google. They are interested in developing for Amazon’s version of Droid for Kindle and they may make the jump to iOS one day. All in due time though as the company has two new games on the horizon: Poker Farm Pets and Angry Zombies.
