  • Fake iPhone 4S App For Android: Trick Your Stupid Friends

There’s an app in the Android Market called Fake iPhone 4S, which is designed to “Trick your friends into thinking you have the new iPhone 4S!”

That’s what the app description says. I guess having idiot friends is a prerequisite.

    The description continues:

This app is a full-screen working replica of the iPhone 4 home screen. It even replaces your phone’s status bar, so there’s no hint of Android underneath.
NEW: Swipe down for notifications! Now you can access notifications without having to leave the app.
NEW: Actual network operator shown in status bar – you’re no longer stuck with AT&T!
Most of the icons on the screen will open up the relevant Android app when clicked. If there’s no suitable app, or the app isn’t installed on your device, it’s replaced with a sponsored message. The advertising revenue helps support the future development of this app, so please bear this in mind 🙂

It’s apparently been available for a while, but this is the first we’ve heard it (hat tip: Redmond Pie). It looks like a few more obscure Android sites have noticed it before. Over 13,000 people have downloaded. I wonder how many people it’s fooled given that it does not physically change the design of your Android device.

Something tells me this app won’t be around very long as it gains more exposure. At least in the description, it says, “iPhone is a trademark of Apple Computer Inc. This app is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.”

A couple weeks ago, we saw a “Siri competitor” make its way to Android.

Discounts can make a huge difference in app downloads, and there’s just something about the 99 cent price tag that is much more appealing than even $1.99.

  • Lovestagram Lets Instagram Make Valentine Cards

Do you have a special somebody in your life? Do you want to make their Valentine’s Day special? Use Lovestagram, a new service created by Kaitlyn Trigger, girlfriend of Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram.

Lovestagram is being billed as Trigger’s Valentine’s Day gift to Krieger. It allows Instagram users to create custom Valentines Day cards from their photos on Instagram.

It’s a sweet gift and potentially great new service for those who want to make something a little special for their significant others this Valentine’s Day.

Trigger built Lovestagram from scratch after learning Python, Django, Jinja, HTML, CSS, jQuery and Photoshop. It’s an impressive feat and makes the idea behind Lovestagram all the more sweet.

The only downside of course is that it requires an Instagram account to use and the service is only on the iPhone. Us Android users are just left out of the romance, but hey, at least we go straight for the lovemaking instead of wasting time on Valentine’s Day cards.

    Here’s an example:

  • PaperKarma Stops Junk Mail In Its Tracks

E-mail spam has always been a problem, and there are multiple ways to combat the annoying stuff. What about traditional physical junk mail though? There’s a really cool app for that.

Say hello to PaperKarma, a new app for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone that is here to “get rid of junk mail and save the earth – all from your phone.”

The app claims to work by a user taking a picture of the junk mail that they’ve been sent. The team behind it will send a request on your behalf to the offending companies so that you’ll be added to their block list.

The app claims that it’s able to stop magazines, catalogs, coupon books, fliers, credit card offers and the white/yellow pages.

I’ve downloaded the app to see how it works myself. The app first asks you to sign up either via an account with them or through Facebook. If you go through Facebook, you can “share your environmental good deeds” through the social media service. From there, you enter your address so they know which address to tell companies to stop sending mail to.

Now you’re ready to start taking pictures. Just take a picture of the offending mail and upload it to their servers. From there, the team will search for the company and send a message on your behalf to them. From there, you should stop receiving junk mail from the companies in question.

They list more detailed information on their blog about how the app works. They also list proof from companies that have stopped sending users junk mail.

I don’t really get annoyed by junk mail, but PaperKarma is all about cutting down on the amount of paper companies use. It’s a good cause and worthy of checking out.

  • Hackers Ramp-Up Production At Foxconn

    Hackers Ramp-Up Production At Foxconn

Hackers calling themselves Swagg Security have infiltrated Foxconn’s computer systems and created havoc with production schedules and quotas. Taking advantage of an internet vulnerability, the group was able to gain access to usernames and passwords for many people within the company and their supply chain. Swagg security offers the names and passwords up to outside users and encourages them to place orders of their own. Here’s a segment from their declaration:

“So Foxconn thinks they got ’em some swagger because they work with the Big Boys from Intel, Microsoft, IBM, and Apple? Fool, You don’t know what swagger is. They say you got your employees all worked up, committing suicide ‘n stuff. They say you hire chinese workers ’cause you think the taiwanese are elite. We got somethin’ served up good…real good. Your not gonna’ know what hit you by the time you finish this release. Your company gonna’ crumble, and you deserve it”.

Apparently the hackers are big fans of Apple products and take a “slight ” interest in Foxconn because of their affinity for the iPhone, but it is not their overarching purpose:

“…we are not hacking a corporation for such a reason and although we are slightly interested in the existence of an Iphone 5, we are not hacking for this reason”

What is the real reason for their mischief?:

“We hack for the cyberspace who share a few common viewpoints and philosophies. We enjoy exposing governments and corporations, but the more prominent reason, is the hilarity that ensues when compromising and destroying an infrastructure.”

So mainly, these guys are just in it for the thrill of the hunt. Their slogan is, “Hacking Today for an Entertaining Tomorrow”. They would like to viewed as entertainers. I like it! Anyhow, they do admit that their work, “..reveals an almost unknown feeling of a menacing satisfaction”. But also admit that, “Of course with funding ourselves we did have our limitations”.

Despite their limited funding, they imply that we can expect to see more works from them and they will persist and “encourage not to continue quelling such a natural emotion but to embrace it”. Good to hear from the guys at Swagg Security (and Hacking).

  • Apple iTV Rumored To Be Much Like iPad

iPods, iPhones, iMacs, iPads, iTV? It certainly seems so according to recent news. As technology grows, the possibilities for advancement in personal conveniences for everyday life grows. The conveniences that Apple Inc. has given us certainly surpass any past technologies from other companies and they just keep rolling out the tech.

It was reported some time ago by WebProNews that Apple might throw their TV hat into the ring and as time has passed it seems to be more prevalent that the super-company may indeed introduce a groundbreaking smart-TV.

Reportedly, the new iTV will sport many of the same features as your iPad and iPhone sporting apps, games and even Siri voice control. According to the article a Canadian research team has been testing an iTV prototype in their labs and their findings about the device are fairly similar to the other iDevices Apple has.

It seems you will be able to do all your favorite TV activities from the comfort of your couch with Siri voice control. Much like the 4S, you’ll be able to give Siri vocal commands and then set back and relax while you enjoy your entertainment; movies, television and more.

It’s also been rumored that the new device may support an iPhone link that will allow you to possibly do many of your iPhone activities, such as stream Netflix, on the iTV. The TV is also said to support Skype and and an iSight camera, which would be an interesting feature.

With all this supported technology, it has to be able to support games and apps, right? Speculation says the new device will be able to support apps and games. With that technology, you’ll be able to enjoy your iTV much like your other iDevices. Apple is very quiet about their work, but it’s rumored that the TV could be released sometime in 2013, although not much is certain.

  • iPad 3: Leaked Images Show Few External Changes, Big Internal Changes

UPDATE: iPad 3 Launch Event rumored for the first week of March.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Several images are circulating this morning that appear to be components of the forthcoming iPad 3. While the various images show some interesting updates to some of the tablet’s internal components, they also suggest that the device will be almost identical to its predecessor, the iPad 2.

Cult of Mac has obtained images from iPatch, a British company specializing in the repair of iOS devices. The leaked images include the internal cable for the sleep/wake button, mute switch, and volume buttons. Despite slight internal differences, the arrangement of the buttons appears very much the same. Other images show the microphone, which is significantly different than the one found in the iPad 2. The internal Wi-Fi components also appear to be significantly different, as does the headphone jack.

    iPad 3 Microphone

    iPad 3 Wi-Fi

Other images, both from Cult of Mac and Chinese tech blog Apple.Pro (Google Translation) purport to show the back panel of the iPad. Assuming they’re genuine, it looks like the iPad 3 is going to be basically identical to the iPad 2 from an external design standpoint.

These images confirm what the rumor mill has been saying for some time: the iPad 3 will get some fairly significant internal upgrades, but will be basically the same as the iPad 2 on the outside. A prototype of the iPad 3 was purportedly spotted in the wild at CES last month. Apart from being marginally thicker than the iPad 2, it was identical. Meanwhile, other rumors have suggested major internal upgrades to the tablet, including a quad-core processor, 4G LTE capability, a significant camera upgrade, and a retina display.

    iPad 3 Camera Port

For more information you can find all our iPad 3 coverage here. We’re already over a quarter of the way through February, and the iPad is likely to launch some time in March. That being the case, you can expect more rumors – and more reliable rumors – to surface in the coming weeks. Check back here for more information as it becomes available.

  • Is The iPhone Killing Wireless Carriers?

Is The iPhone Killing Wireless Carriers?

With all those iPhones sold last year, surely the wireless carriers are doing great, right? Turns out the iPhone is what’s hurting carriers the most.

CNN reports that due to the heavy discounts applied to the iPhone by carriers, sales of the device destroy their bottom lines. Take for instance Verizon, the wireless company that started selling the iPhone in February 2011. Their “EBITDA service margin,” which is a metric that carriers use to “measure their core profit as a percentage of their sales, has dropped dramatically since they began selling the iPhone.

Between 2009 and 2010, Verizon averaged a EBITDA service margin of 46.4 percent per quarter. That fell to 43.7 percent in the quarter that the iPhone went on sale. It plunged even further last quarter when they sold 4.2 million iPhones to 42.2 percent.

Funny enough, their margin bounced back up to 47.8 percent during the third quarter last year. Why is that? People stopped buying iPhones.

AT&T has always sold more iPhones than other carriers which hurts them in a big way. Their margin was at 28.7 percent last quarter, compared to 37.6 percent the year before. The main cause – they sold twice as many iPhones last quarter.

Sprint already had a low margin to begin with, but they really took a beating once they began selling the iPhone. Their margin fell to 9.5 percent from 16 percent a year earlier. Sprint placed the blame squarely on the iPhone for their poor figures.

Analysts agree that the iPhone is bad for wireless carriers. As sales of the iPhone grow beyond anybody’s expectations, the subsidies from the devices will keep on hurting the profits of their carriers.

Carriers pay around $450 per device they sell which is the highest in the industry. AT&T is hurting even more since they offer the iPhone 3GS for free.

Sprint agreed to pay $15.5 billion in up front costs to Apple over the next four years for the device. They don’t even expect to make money on it until 2015.

The cost of adding an iPhone customer is about 40 percent higher than a non-iPhone customer according to Sprint.

Why would these companies destroy themselves over the iPhone then? It’s a matter of keeping customers. Sprint’s CEO told CNN last year that they offered the iPhone because customers were leaving to other carriers that had the device.

The only way that carriers are going to make money off of the iPhone is to raise rates or force Apple to lower their subsidies. Since nobody wants to tell Apple what to do, that’s why carriers like AT&T have been coercing customers into getting more expensive plans.

That’s the only solution making any sense right now so expect to see higher monthly bills in exchange for having an iPhone.

  • New Vonage iPhone, Android App Takes Aim At Skype

Vonage has released a new app for mobile devices as part of its ongoing rivalry with VoIP giant Skype. The app, Vonage Mobile, is available today for iOS and Android devices. Vonage Mobile offers free app-to-app calling, and claims to offer significantly lower rates on other calls than either Skype or mobile carriers on international calls.

    Vonage Mobile for IOS

When you launch the app you’re prompted to enter your mobile phone number and email address. The first so Vonage can use your mobile number for outgoing calls, and the second for account management purposes. Also, Vonage uploads your phone’s address book to their servers. Unlike some other apps I could mention, Vonage Mobile is kind enough to warn you that it’s doing so.

    Vonage Needs Your Address Book

Vonage Mobile allows users to make app-to-app calls over 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi. Calls to other Vonage Mobile app users are free, as are calls to any Vonage number. Interestingly, the app does not require you to be a Vonage customer to make calls. Credit for international calls can be added via in-app purchase.

    Vonage Mobile for Android

Vonage Mobile is a free download from the Android App Market and the iOS App Store. The iOS app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It is not, however, a universal app, which means it isn’t optimized for iPad, only compatible. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.

  • The History Of The Mobile App Marketplace

The History Of The Mobile App Marketplace

Did you know that it’s been less than four years since Apple launched iTunes App Store? Only four years and yet information about apps for smartphones is omnipresent in commercials, ads, conversation, and so on. Smartphones would hardly be worth the extra cost and bulk if they weren’t capable of supporting the various and wonderfully helpful apps that so many of us have integrated into our lives.

So how did it all get to be this way? App watchers and wizards at ShoutEm have put together a nice infographic to recount the brief albeit bustling history of the mobile app store. One interesting fact: I had no idea that Android Market launched only three months after iTunes App Store. Who knew!

  • Halliburton Drops BlackBerry, Switches to iPhone

In 2007 Research In Motion’s BlackBerry platform owned the mobile enterprise market. As the iPhone – and Google’s Android platform after it – have grown in popularity, RIM has steadily lost market share. With the help of a few bad business decisions and some products that did not live up to their potential, RIM has reached the point where they are in significant trouble as a company.

Now it looks like they’re about to suffer another blow. AppleInsider has apparently gotten hold of an internal memo detailing plans by energy giant Halliburton to transition from BlackBerry to iOS as its mobile business platform. According to the document, the company intends to expand its use of mobile technology in the coming months as it phases out BlackBerry and phases in the iPhone. The decision apparently comes after extensive research into the mobile platform options available – iOS, Android, and BlackBerry. The company concluded that iOS best suited Halliburton’s security and control needs. The company plans to make the transition to iOS products over the next two years.

The loss of such a large customer could do significant damage to the already struggling RIM. The company has made some efforts in recent months – including appointing a new CEO – but it remains to be seen whether it will be possible to right RIM’s ship, or whether the recent efforts are too little, too late.

  • iPhone Alone Made More Than Microsoft

iPhone Alone Made More Than Microsoft

Apple made a lot of news a couple weeks ago with its most recent quarterly earnings report. In another record-setting quarter, Apple generated $46.33 billion in revenue. So immense were Apple’s earnings, in fact, that a website popped up to help people get a little perspective on just how much $46.33 billion is.

Some more information has emerged in the last few days that helps put Apple’s earnings in a slightly different perspective. The release of Microsoft’s quarterly report just a few days ahead of Apple’s allowed for some comparisons to be made, and the results are surprising. Whereas Apple generated $46.33 billion in revenue, Microsoft generated less than half of that – $20.9 billion. What’s remarkable, though, is that not only did Apple generated more revenue than Microsoft, the iPhone generated more revenue than Microsoft. That is, if the iPhone were a standalone business, completely separate from Apple, it would have made more money last quarter than Microsoft. The iPhone alone generated a revenue of $24.4 billion. That’s $3.5 billion more than Microsoft, and $2.47 billion more than the rest of Apple’s revenue.

The chart below, courtesy of Business Insider, gives a little bit of visual perspective:

    iPhone vs. Microsoft

Of course, that doesn’t quite make Apple king of the hill. Microsoft still has Apple beaten in terms of computer market share, just as Android maintains a solid lead in the mobile space. Nevertheless, it’s amazing to see that within 5 years of completely reinventing the smartphone market, it has parlayed that success into complete financial dominance of its biggest rival. Whether you’re an Apple fanboy or an Apple hater, you have to admit that that’s pretty impressive.

  • Smartphone Apps That Can Shrink Your Wallet

Convenience is the host and we are the parasites that feed from it. With the growing technology of today’s world, mobile apps have emerged to the forefront of society giving us the ability to access, learn and do things faster, sometimes, than the actual internet. With everything from a T-pain autotune app to apps with which you can create your own pottery, these convenient and sometimes silly apps are popular among smartphone users.

With apps ranging from free to as much as a few dollars in price, companies can have the chance to rake in millions upon millions due to the vast amounts of apps available.

The following list displays and details just a few of the many, more expensive apps you can purchase; warning these prices may cause your wallet to cry.

Agro for iPhone and iPad ($999.99)- Available to help argonomists create and distribute field inspection reports. Specially designed for those in such fields as farming, orchards, vineyards and other similar soil management areas.

MobiGage for iPhone and iPad($999.99)- this is a meteorology app that measures materials in manufacturing plants using a Leica laser. It can be used in the production of airplanes, cars, etc. . . PC versions of this software can cost as much as 25,000 dollars

BarMax for iPhone and iPad ($999.99)- This app is a prep course for either the New York or California state bar exam. It comes with test prep questions from actual past tests, essays and also comes with audio lectures. The company that makes the app is currently working on the app for other states as well.

iStutter for iPhone ($999.99)- For those who struggle with with the speech problem of stuttering, this app is intended for you. According to the app’s description It “analyzes vocal fold activity and selectively provides delayed auditory feedback when the user’s speech is too fast or the user is stuttering”.

iVIP Black for iPhone ($999.99)- this is cool app caters to those who have at least a net worth of 1 million dollars and you have to be able to prove it. The app gets you special treatment at select luxury events, hotels, clubs, etc… It allows you to book private jets, yachts, private islands and more.

Engine Connect for iPad ($999.99)- Meteorologists, sportscasters and news anchors alike can manipulate animations like weather maps and other illustrations live on screen as viewers watch.

Android users don’t have to feel left out, they have a couple of expensive apps as well; although they are pretty pointless.

Black Diamond ($200)- Buy this app and you have your very own black diamond…as a wallpaper. Yeah, that’s right, it’s just a pointlessly expensive wallpaper for your homescreen. I say pointless because the nearly same Blue Diamond app is available for the astonishing price of…free.

Vuvuzela World Cup Horn Plus ($200)- Download the app, shake your phone and boom, you have your own Vuvuzela horn. Shake it to stop. Again, all for a ridiculous 200 bucks.

  • Honeywell Sues Nest Over Learning Thermostat

During last month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas we brought you news of the Nest Learning Thermostat. This amazing thermostat learns from your habits and adjusts the temperature in your home in order to save energy, as well as money on your heating/cooling bill. The thermostat even connects with your home wi-fi, allowing you to control it from a free iOS or Android app.

Now, however, Nest has been hit with a lawsuit by Honeywell. Honeywell claims that the Nest Learning Thermostat infringes on seven patents owned by Honeywell. The patents cover a variety of technological features of the thermostat, including natural language user interface, programming interface, and various internal components. The suit seeks damages and an injunction preventing Nest from selling the Learning Thermostat.

While Beth Wozniak, president of Honeywell Environmental and Combustion Controls, insisted that Honeywell welcomes competition, but refuses to allow infringement on Honeywell’s intellectual property. In a recent interview with GigaOm, Wozniak said that Honeywell had looked into learning thermostat technology, but ultimately abandoned it.

I got in touch with Nest about the situation, but apparently they were caught off guard by Honeywell’s filing. Here’s what a Nest spokesperson had to say: “We have not yet reviewed the actual filing, which we learned about this morning through Honeywell’s press release. We will provide comment once we’ve had the opportunity to review it.”

  • Why Are Social Games So Popular?

Why Are Social Games So Popular?

I’m what you might call the old guard in gaming. I come from a time where games were only played by nerdy kids with titles like Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda. This whole social gaming craze caught the gaming industry off guard. It’s these kind of moments that redefine how people perceive gaming.

The infographic today takes a look at why this new phenomena known as social gaming has become so popular. I don’t see the appeal in them, but I see everybody else seems to have fun with them. If you’re part of the old guard like me, this infographic should help you understand those that spend five hours on Facebook playing Farmville a little better.

After going through it, you may realize that we’re not so different. We play games for the same reason. We just play them differently. While the old guard is slicing away at dragons in Skyrim, the new guys and gals are playing a Scrabble clone with their friends. We’re both playing games, so why be at each other’s throats?

  • Samsung Galaxy S III Set For May Launch

Samsung Galaxy S III Set For May Launch

Samsung may be preparing to launch its thinnest smartphone yet, according to new rumors. The new Galaxy S III will be only 7 millimeters thick and will launch in May. At 7 millimeters, the Galaxy S III will be one of the thinnest smartphones ever, and will beat the current generation Galaxy S II by almost a millimeter and a half.

Korean news site Electronics Times News (Google Translation), also claims that the newest iteration of Samsung’s flagship smartphone will sport a Super AMOLED Plus display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 8 megapixel front camera and 2 megapixel rear camera, quad-core processor, and 4G LTE capability. Previous rumors have suggested the phone would also have 2 GB of RAM and possibly even 3D functionality. Another report recently hinted that the Galaxy S III may have a waterproof Liquipel coating right out of the box.

While these are still just rumors, the specs listed by ET News are reasonable. The loss of over a millimeter of thickness would be a pretty impressive feat. Also, a May release date would allow Samsung the chance to beat Apple’s next iPhone – presumably coming out in June or July – to the shelves. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

  • Android, iOS App Celebrates 75 Years Of Dr. Seuss

Android, iOS App Celebrates 75 Years Of Dr. Seuss

Seventy-five years ago a cartoonist and poet by the name of Theodore Seuss Geisel decided to try his hand at writing children’s literature. The first result was a wonderful little book about a boy letting his imagination wander as he walked down Mulberry Street, headed home from school.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, an app has been released for iOS and Android devices. Like previous apps made from Dr. Seuss books, the Mulberry Street app offers users a variety of reading options. Autoplay takes readers through the book, reading the words and turning the pages automatically. The “Read It To Me” option reads the words aloud, but lets users decide when to turn the pages. The “Read It Myself” option presents Mulberry Street as a standard e-book, letting users turn the pages and read the words on their own.

Apps of Dr. Seuss’s books have consistently been excellent, and Mulberry Street is no exception. The app is $2.99 in the Android App Market and the iOS App Store. The iOS version is a universal app, meaning it plays on either the iPad or the iPhone/iPod Touch. Go check it out, then let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Xbox Co-Creator Turns To iPhone For New Gaming Experiences

Xbox Co-Creator Turns To iPhone For New Gaming Experiences

Seamus Blackley, the co-creator of the Xbox, is launching a new start up called Innovative Leisure. The company is a collaboration of classic Atari designers from ages past making new games for the iPhone and iPad.

Blackley, with his partner Van Burnham, aim to create a new company whose focus is to use the talent from the “golden age” of Atari to create a modern arcade for iOS.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Blackley laid out his idea on what he calls the “new arcade.” He believes that 99 cents is the new quarter on iOS.

The dream team of Atari creators include Ed Rotberg, creator of Battlezone; Owen Rubin, creator of Major Havoc and Space Duel; Rich Adam, creator of Gravitar and co-developer of Missile Command; Ed Logg, co-creator of Asteroids and Centipede; Dennis Koble, creator of Touch Me and Shooting Gallery; Tim Skelly, creator of Rip-Off; and Bruce Merrit, creator of Black Widow.

The team at Innovative Leisure is comprise of the aforementioned 11 arcade game creators alongside interns in their 20s who will help create the apps. To finance the company, Blackley is investing his own money into the project alongside the help of THQ.

The team will present on their new project next week at the DICE Summit.

Burnham and Blackley met the Atari men while Burnham was writing “Supercade: A Visual History of the Videogame Age 1971-1984.”

During that same time, they began building their own arcade called Supercade in a Los Angeles warehouse. It features machines that Blackley has repaired and refurbished himself. When Blackley left his previous job last summer, Supercade fit in with his future plans.

“We had that big collection of games, and we love the history of game design,” Blackley said. “I’m lucky because I love games and following that love has always done me well. Once we figured out the iPhone is the new arcade, that games from the old days fit this new audience and their on-the-go lifestyle, we knew what to do. There is already a group of people who know how to operate and innovate in this space. They had the longest string of hit games in history. And they wanted to get back together again.”

The Atari men all came back together under one roof because they felt that their times at Atari were the most rewarding. The interns are likewise excited to be working with the “inventors of gameplay.”

The team came up with 30 ideas initially. These ideas were brought down to 10 games and were presented to THQ. The publisher wanted all of them. Seven of those titles are in the works now.

Blackley believes in making original games, instead of the current iOS market which is full of copycats and derivatives.

The team works in the arcade warehouse so they can be constantly inspired by the games that came before them. They all work in separate teams, but they critique each other’s work as progress is made.

Blackley says that the games will start coming out this summer on the iPhone and iPad. They will market the games themselves with a bit of help from THQ. He believes that the games will take off though because of their “awesome gameplay.”

“They’re all playable and awesome,” he said. “More ideas are coming up from the old guys and the new guys. We want to have a string of really innovative games.”

  • Apple Putting iPad And iPhone Back On Sale In Germany

Just a little while ago we brought you news that Apple had withdrawn most of it’s 3G capable iOS devices from its online store in Germany. The devices were pulled when Motorola began enforcing a decision handed down in December that found that Apple’s iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad 2 3G infringed on patents held by Motorola in Europe.

The ban didn’t last long at all, however, as the devices are now back up in Apple’s online store in Germany. Apparently a higher court suspended the injunction this morning in response to Apple’s appeals. Apple appealed on the grounds that Motorola refused to license the relevant patents according to the EU’s FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, And Non-Discriminatory) rules.

The suspension is temporary, however, which means that Apple could be required to remove the devices again if further appeals are unsuccessful. The wi-fi iPad and the iPhone 4S are exempt from the injunction, which means that they have remained available despite the injunction. Also, as noted this morning, the injunction did not cover sales of the devices in physical stores, only in Apple’s online store.
