  • iPhone Case: New Festive Light-Up Design

Does your iPhone case light up? No? How drab!

How about some flashy, festive fun, just in time for the holidays? The VanD flashing iPhone case wants to provide this.

The secret is the LED flash for alerts, a little-known IOS setting, that will make the entire case light up to display an embedded pattern. Every time your phone rings, you receive a text, email, or any other alert normally triggered on your phone, the lights will be distributed through the seemingly transparent casing.

CNET reports that the VanD flashing iPhone case requires no additional battery power and comes in a variety of colors and designs. It is available for iPhone 5/5S and iPhone 5C and sells for $19.99 per case.

Another new case, the Lightstrap, turns your iPhone into a camera flash light.

Lightstrap began as a Kickstarter project this week, promising “no more blur and grain, just crisp vibrant photos with the distinctive look of a professional ring light.”

According to the L.A. Times, the smartphone case uses a camera light that wraps around its edges, creating a ring of light that goes off whenever photos are taken using the flash feature. It works with any iPhone camera and video app.

Lightstrap is hoping to raise $245,000. It has currently raised approximately $43,000. If a user pledges $87, he or she can receive a Lightstrap iPhone 5 or 5s case if the project reaches is goal by January 3, 2014.

  • Bulletproof iPhone Case Will Protect You From A .50 Caliber Bullet

Most of us have heard stories about people whose lives were miraculously saved when a bullet that was aimed at them was stopped by something either on their person or in their pocket – a medallion or cross around the neck, a heavy belt buckle, or the like. We all love stories like that, even the ones that require the person doing the shooting to be a poor marksman (who aims for a belt buckle?).

Well, now, for the low, low price of $650, you can give yourself a bit more of a fighting chance if you’re ever fired on by an extremely well-armed but unskilled assailant. A Japanese company called Marudai Corp has designed a bulletproof iPhone case. Well, they claim it’s bulletproof, anyway. In fact, they claim it will stop anything up to a .50 caliber bullet – the kind fired by Agent Smith’s Desert Eagle in the image above.

How, you may ask, do they accomplish this? How do they make an iPhone case that will stop a bullet? Some sort of Batman-esque Kevlar armor? Nope. They do it the old-fashioned way: with an inch of steel. The case comes in two main parts: an aluminum front panel (available in either black or white!), and an inch-thick steel plate on the back. Check out some images from their website below:

Now, unfortunately there’s no actual evidence that this monster will stop a bullet. Marudai did not see their way clear to posting a video of the case in action, and since I have neither an extra $650 nor a Desert Eagle (more’s the pity), I can’t verify it either. That being the case, should you happen to wind up getting one of these things, you might want to be careful trusting your life to it.

Of course, even if the thing can stop a bullet, it would take a very special set of circumstances for it to do so in the real world. For one thing, you’d have to contrive to get shot in whatever pocket you were carrying your phone in, and you’d have to make sure you were carrying it with the screen facing toward you, and not toward the bullet. Before that, though, you’d have to find pants with a pocket that will hold a 5-inch by 3-inch by 1.5 inch block of steel and iPhone that weighs over four a half pounds.

Should you wish to buy one of these cases – or even just take a look at it for yourself – you can find more information on Marudai’s website (Google Translation). The price is listed as ¥52,500 ($650).

  • CES 2012: Lifeproof Wants You To Take Your Phone Anywhere

Lifeproof first made news with their iPhone cases several months ago. These cases are designed to be, well, life proof. An iPhone in a Lifeproof case is supposed to be able to withstand almost any amount of water, dirt, snow, and shock – pretty much anything you can throw at it. The case is so rugged that the assembly instructions actually ask buyers to assemble the case without their iPhone in it and submerge the empty case in water for half an hour in order to be sure they’ve assembled it correctly.

Today at CES Lifeproof has announced a new line of accessories for the case that will make it even easier to take your iPhone absolutely anywhere. The new Lifeproof in Motion line includes belt clips, a bike bar mount, an adapter for those with GoPro mounts, and an armband for jogging and swimming. Yes, swimming.

The accessories are available on Lifeproof’s website now. The case itself runs $79.99. And don’t worry, if you’re one of those people who has to see it to believe it (I was), they have a series of videos showing the Lifeproof case in action. The video demonstrating the case’s performance in water is embedded below, for your viewing pleasure.
