  • iPhone 4S Does Not Infringe Samsung Patents, Dutch Court Rules

Apple’s iPhone 4S does not violate Samsung’s patents due to Samsung’s persistent refusal to licence them to Apple under Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms, according to a ruling by a court in The Hague, Netherlands today.

Samsung had accused Apple of infringing on a collection of patents related to 3G technology. The court ruled that there was no infringement because Samsung was obligated under EU rules to license the patents under FRAND terms. Because Apple was willing to negotiate such terms, Samsung does not have grounds to argue infringement. The court also ruled that Apple was protected from infringement on certain patents because the chips in the iPhone 4S that Samsung accused of infringing its patents were purchased from Qualcomm, which does have licensing agreements with Samsung.

Samsung and Apple have been engaged in a lengthy battle over patent infringement. The battle began in April of last year when Apple sued Samsung in U.S. courts on the grounds that several of its Galaxy phones and Galaxy Tab 10.1 were too similar to Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Apple argued that the devices were sufficiently similar to constituted infringement of design patents. Samsung countersued both in the U.S. and in several other countries.

Though Samsung has had some rulings go in its favor, things have generally gone in Apple’s favor. Apple nearly managed to block the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia completely, and similar injunctions have been issued in Germany. Today’s ruling represents a significant victory for Apple, as it effectively signals the end of Samsung’s suit against Apple over those patents. Moreover, as Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents points out, the ruling constitutes a significant reinforcement of the EU’s rules regarding FRAND licensing.

  • China Telecom To Begin Selling iPhones Next Month

China Telecom To Begin Selling iPhones Next Month

China Telecom has announced that they will start carrying Apple’s iPhone 4S next month. All models of the iPhone will be available on a selection of the company’s plans. Chinese customers who want an iPhone can pre-order one beginning March 2. The phone will be available for purchase on March 9.

Of the three major Chinese mobile carriers, China Telecom is the second to get the iPhone. China Unicom has had the device for some time. The third carrier, China Mobile, does not currently have the technology to offer the iPhone on its network.

The deal will no doubt be a big boost to Apple in China, where the iPhone has struggled to gain a foothold. A recent report showed that the iPhone’s market share in China had slipped to fourth place behind Samsung, Nokia, Huawei Technologies, and ZTE Corporation. Apple’s struggles in the huge Chinese mobile market have been attributed in part to the fact that only one of China’s three main carriers carry the iPhone.

  • iPad’s Biggest Competitor Is iPhone 4S, Not Kindle Fire

According to a recent study by iSuppli, the iPad so thoroughly owns the tablet market that its nearest competitor isn’t a tablet at all: it’s the iPhone 4S. In the fourth quarter of 2011 Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads. That number was lower than expected for the quarter, but the hit to the iPad’s market share came from the iPhone 4S, which launched at the beginning of the quarter, and which ate up a lot of disposable income that might otherwise have gone toward iPads.

Amazon, meanwhile, had a strong showing with their Kindle Fire tablet, which sold 3.9 million units during the fourth quarter. Unlike the iPad, the Kindle Fire met analysts’ expecations almost exactly. Sales of the Kindle Fire also allowed Amazon to surpass Samsung to take second place in the tablet market for the quarter, after the iPad. Samsung retained second place for the year, however. In both cases, Amazon and Samsung were in second by a huge margin. Apple’s 15.4 million sales in the fourth quarter are almost quadruple Amazon’s Kindle Fire sales, and their 40.5 million sales for the year are nearly seven times Samsung’s sales.

The study also predicted that Apple would make up for its losses in market share in the first half of 2012 with the launch of the iPad 3. The tablet market as a whole continued to grow in 2011. Total tablet sales came to 65.2 million units, beating analysts’ expectations by half a million units.

  • Fake iPhone 4S App For Android: Trick Your Stupid Friends

There’s an app in the Android Market called Fake iPhone 4S, which is designed to “Trick your friends into thinking you have the new iPhone 4S!”

That’s what the app description says. I guess having idiot friends is a prerequisite.

    The description continues:

This app is a full-screen working replica of the iPhone 4 home screen. It even replaces your phone’s status bar, so there’s no hint of Android underneath.
NEW: Swipe down for notifications! Now you can access notifications without having to leave the app.
NEW: Actual network operator shown in status bar – you’re no longer stuck with AT&T!
Most of the icons on the screen will open up the relevant Android app when clicked. If there’s no suitable app, or the app isn’t installed on your device, it’s replaced with a sponsored message. The advertising revenue helps support the future development of this app, so please bear this in mind 🙂

It’s apparently been available for a while, but this is the first we’ve heard it (hat tip: Redmond Pie). It looks like a few more obscure Android sites have noticed it before. Over 13,000 people have downloaded. I wonder how many people it’s fooled given that it does not physically change the design of your Android device.

Something tells me this app won’t be around very long as it gains more exposure. At least in the description, it says, “iPhone is a trademark of Apple Computer Inc. This app is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.”

A couple weeks ago, we saw a “Siri competitor” make its way to Android.

  • Short Horror Film Proves That Siri Is Evil

There are no shortage of parody videos involving Siri. Some are pretty lame, but others are hilarious. My favorites, though, are the scary ones, the ones that play on our innate fear of technology – the kind of fear that spawned movies like The Terminator or The Matrix, and even an old episode of The Twilight Zone. Somewhere in the back of our minds, we’re all secretly afraid of all this amazing technology we have.

This most recent one is one of those. A young man finds an iPhone lying on the ground and brings it home. Unfortunately for him, he gets more than the standard magical and revolutionary iPhone he was hoping for. Though the acting – especially by the main character – leaves a lot to be desired, the special effects are pretty fantastic. Check out the video and let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Lingual Jailbreak Tweak Turns Siri Into A Translator

Last week we brought you news of the release of the long-awaited jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Now it looks like jailbreak developers have wasted no time in preparing some amazing tweaks for the iPhone 4S’s most notable feature: Siri. A tweak has appeared in the Cydia app store that turns Siri into a translator.

Lingual is a free tweak that allows users to say an English phrase to Siri and have it translated into whatever language they choose. At present Lingual supports more than 30 languages, including French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Vietnamese, Ukranian, Estonian, and more. Lingual requires that the AssistantExtension tweak already be installed.

While Lingual isn’t quite a Star Trek-style universal translator, it’s a step in that direction. Here’s a video of Lingual in action, courtesy of iJailbreak. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Over A Third Of iPhone Buyers Switched From Android, BlackBerry

Over A Third Of iPhone Buyers Switched From Android, BlackBerry

The iPhone 4S launch in October was met with high level of demand that has become customary for the launch of new Apple products. Of course, not all of those people lining up for new iPhones are current iPhone users, raising the question of where they all come from.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners has released a study today that sheds some light on the issue. According to their data, 18% of those who bought the iPhone 4S at its launch in October were switching from other smartphone platforms like BlackBerry and Android. For October, November, and December 2011 combined, that number jumps to 36%.

Additionally, CIRP’s data showed that the iPhone has had a significant impact on the market shares of the major carriers. Three of the four major carriers – AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint – carry the iPhone. The fourth, T-Mobile, does not. CIRP’s data showed that T-Mobile lost market share during the first three months of the iPhone 4S’s availability, while the other three maintained their market share.

Interestingly, the fact that 36% of new iPhone buyers were coming from other platforms seems not to have had much of an impact on those other platforms’ market share. According to an analysis released by StatCounter at the end of 2011, BlackBerry and Android continued fairly steadily in their respective trends throughout the last quarter of 2011. BlackBerry declined steadily throughout 2011, and showed no change in the rate of decline during the three months the iPhone 4S was available. Android, meanwhile, continued its steady climb throughout the year (even surpassing the iPhone in late summer), though it did show a very slight levelling off in October, around the time of the iPhone 4S’s launch.

  • iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Jailbreak Gets A Million Downloads In 24 Hours

Last week we brought you news that Absinthe, the long-awaited jailbreak for A5-powered iOS 5 devices – iPhone 4S and iPad 2 – was finally available from Greenpois0n. The rush to download the new jailbreak was so great, in fact, that the Greenpois0n site was down for much of the day, and users had difficulty downloading the Absinthe. Moreover, those who did manage to download it had couldn’t install it, because it required contact with Greenpois0n’s servers to activate.

Server difficulties notwithstanding, though, Absinthe was a hit. Joshua Hill, jailbreak developer from the Chronic Dev Team, told Cult of Mac that Absinthe was downloaded over a million times in the first 24 hours of availability. What’s more, all of those one million downloads came before the Windows version of Absinthe was even available, meaning that the amazing first day numbers only account for Mac users. This makes Absinthe the most popular download-based jailbreak tool ever.

Since the initial release of the Mac version of Absinthe, we’ve seen the release of the Windows version and an update. Download numbers for the Windows version are not available at present, but it’s safe to say they are probably pretty high also.

If you’re interested in jailbreaking your iPhone 4S, check out Greenpois0n’s website to download Absinthe.

Are you one of the million who downloaded Absinthe on the first day? Have you downloaded it since? Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

  • iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Absinthe Jailbreak Finally Released

The long-awaited jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, dubbed Absinthe, has finally been released today. Jailbreak developer Joshua Hill posted the following on his Twitter profile less than an hour ago:

OSX version of A5 jailbreak posted on http://t.co/i9c8VjbD 57 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

The jailbreak is currently available only for Mac users, though Hill promised that the Windows version is coming very soon:

Windows version of Absinthe is coming as soon as nikias gets home and rolls up the build 51 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Those who wish to download Absinthe can do so at Greenpois0n. The site’s servers are currently under an extremely heavy load, however, so it may take awhile to get through. A direct download link is available here, but since the jailbreak requires contacting Greenpois0n’s servers, would-be jailbreakers are still out of luck until the site comes back online. Absinthe is designed to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, so if you plan to jailbreak and haven’t updated your iPhone or iPad recently, you might want to go ahead and do that while you wait for Greenpois0n to come back up.

  • Apple’s Siri Patent Reveals Even Brighter Future

Very recently the United States Patent and Trademark Office published the patent from Apple’s Siri digital assistant service. The details of the patent reveal some interesting concepts about the design and theory of the interface. The information now has many speculating about where the technology is planned to go in the future.

Some items which are listed on the patent, as expected, which are slated to recieve Siri technology are iPod, iPad, iMac, MacBook but also an Apple TV and Camera. Interesting!! It sounds like the manufacturer is going to bring Siri into every part of our entertainment lives. Imagine a television (iVision) that even renders the remote a dinosaur. I like it!

From the same vein, I can see a camera that requires no user, and by that I mean, it can take your picture while you direct it from various vantage points without physically having a hold of it. This could have great private and professional utility. We’ll see.

If your wondering what kind of information a patent provides, I have included this (below) input/output diagram from Patently Apple. It definitely doesn’t tell the average consumer very much. I’ll follow up on this story when I can make more sense of the diagram….maybe.

  • iPhone 4S Jailbreak Almost Ready For Prime Time

iPhone 4S Jailbreak Almost Ready For Prime Time

We have previously reported that a jailbreak solution for Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPad 2 was on its way soon. Noted jailbreak developer pod2g posted last week that an untethered jailbreak of iOS devices running on Apple’s A5 processor (the iPhone 4S and iPad 2) would be ready in “a matter of days.”

Though it seems that those days aren’t quite up yet, there shouldn’t be many of them left. A video posted on pod2g’s blog this morning shows an iPhone 4S running an untethered jailbreak. Along with the video pod2g promises “only a few to wait now.”

An untethered jailbreak – i.e., one that does not require the phone to be re-jailbroken every time the phone reboots – has proven elusive on A5 devices. Owners of these devices who have been anxiously awaiting a jailbreak should really have no more than a couple of days to wait now. Check out the video below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Siri Lets You Talk To Your House

Siri Lets You Talk To Your House

You should talk to your house more often. It’s feeling left out.

Carnes Audio Visual, makers of the Crestron home control system, have added Siri functionality to it. This allows the user to communicate with their home and give it commands. In the demonstration, the demonstrator uses it to adjust the lights in a home theater as well as control what plays on the projector.

We’ve seen voice controlled home control systems before, but this is still pretty cool.

Check out the live demo and tell us what you think. Would you want to control your home via voice? Does it seem more convenient than just using the touch interface on the device itself?

  • Questionable Chaos, Eggs Break Out At iPhone 4S Release In China

Question: What gets Apple fans really excited? Announcing that they can buy the newest iPhone.

Question: What gets Apple fans really livid? Announcing that they can’t buy the newest iPhone.

This was the social experiment that unfolded today in Beijing, where Apple had planned to launch the iPhone 4S to China. But after getting a little stage fright due to the enormity of the eager crowd, Apple pulled the plug on the launch two hours before the release and postponed the release of the iPhone.

Tsk, tsk, Apple. You may giveth the iPhone, but you may certainly not taketh away.

The Daily Mail reports that after the crowd was informed that Apple would not be selling them the iPhone 4S, people took up my personally favorite way of expressing their outrage by throwing eggs at the Apple Store. Check out footage of the outraged would-be Apple customers in the following video provided by Reuters:

The iPhone 4S was apparently still sold in other stores throughout China today where crowds were presumably less intense and less egg-armed.

In a statement released to Reuters yesterday, Apple said that it has halted sales of the iPhone 4S altogether in Beijing and Shanghai “to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees.” Perhaps The following YouTube video allegedly of the “chaos” at the Apple Store although I think it may be satire:

This additional video, though, does show somebody, here described as a security guard, getting smacked around by some members of the crowd:

Mic Gadget is saying that a fight did break out but that it was between scalpers who got pissed about their lack of iPhone 4Ss to hawk. The New York Times is reporting that “an army of scalpers hired migrant workers to snap up products” such as the iPhone so that the scalpers can then flip the product on the black market.

Honestly, we’ll probably never know really how all this trouble jumped off in Beijing, but whoever started the mini-riot redeems one imperishable maxim: a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

  • Meet The iPhone Case Made Out Of Space Shuttles

Meet The iPhone Case Made Out Of Space Shuttles

This new iPhone case is out of this world – literally.

Divoti, makers of expensive magnetic health bracelets, revealed their new Case Titan for iPhone 4/4S at CES. The case is made out of the same titanium that is used in NASA space shuttles.

The base of the Case Titan is pure titanium and germanium. The base apparently improves the quality of music so much that users will hear a dramatic increase in audio quality even while using basic headphones.

“The Case Titan is unlike any other iPhone case out there,” Ronald He, CEO of Divoti, said. “While there are other titanium and metal iPhone case, this is the only case that dramatically improves the audio quality of music you listen to. It’s so unique that we have patented it.”

This supposed sound quality is what convinced Gutwire, a high-end audiophile accessory company, to partner with Divoti on the case.

Improved sound quality is not the only benefit of this ridiculously expensive case. The “99.99% pure germanium granules” that are embedded on the back of the Case Titan absorbs the heat from the user’s hands and the battery. It apparently releases negative ions that lowers the radiation output of the phone. You heard it here first folks, the Case Titan prevents cellphone-induced cancer.

All joking aside, there is something to be said about luxury iPhone cases. They are intended for the wealthy to flaunt their wealth. Now they can prove their wealth and prevent iPhone cancer. It’s a win-win.

For those interested in the iPhone case of the gods (and bank execs), it can be pre-ordered now for $179.99.

  • iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Jailbreak Imminent

iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Jailbreak Imminent

The jailbreak community has been waiting a long time for developers to crack iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. While an untethered jailbreak has been avialable for awhile now on older devices, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 have proven tough nuts to crack. Both devices run on Apple’s A5 processor, which has presented jailbreak developers like pod2g with considerable trouble.

Now it seems those waiting to jailbreak their A5 iOS device may be nearly done waiting. On his blog today pod2g announced that, with the help of a few other notable names in the jailbreak community, the final hurdle to an untethered jailbreak had been cleared. Though he refrained from offering a precise date, he said that “it should be a matter of days” before the jailbreak is ready.

This will certainly be welcome news to would-be jailbreakers. We will let you know when the jailbreak becomes available.

  • iPhone, Samsung Smartphone Demand Remains High After Holidays

iPhone, Samsung Smartphone Demand Remains High After Holidays

It looks like a lack of Christmas isn’t slowing down anybody’s desire to buy smartphones. ChangeWave Research, an independent research firm that examines consumer behavior, has found that people are still clamoring to get their hands on iPhones and Samsung smartphones.

Unsurprisingly, demand for Apple’s iPhones continues to dominate the market months after the release of the iPhone 4S. ChangeWave, who tracks consumer behavior in quarterly reports throughout the year, states that “Apple has never dominated smart phone planned buying to this extent more than two months after a major new release.” Again, it’s not exactly news to blow your hair back but it’s suggestive of the Siri factor that the iPhone 4S offers users.

The amount of people who plan to buy an iPhone has steadily increased over the past four years with the predictable spikes of interest whenever a new iPhone was released. Traditionally, the amount of people intending to purchase an iPhone drops precipitously a few months after the release of a new model but then establishes a new baseline that is higher than the previous baseline percentage of people planning to buy an iPhone before a new model is released. Apple, in other words, are wizards at creating a sustained interest after the release of iPhones.

What’s more telling is that, while iPhone’s demand has remained strong, it’s dipped 11% from September to December among people planning to purchase a smartphone within the next 90 days. Alternately, the amount of people planning to purchase a Samsung smartphone climbed 8% in the same time period. Combine that with the 2% increase of consumers planning to purchase a Motorola smartphone and you can pretty much see where that missing 11% of would-be iPhone buyers went. In case you forgot, Samsung launched a pretty wild campaign for their Samsung Galaxy S II phone by singling out iPhone users as an affected group of Kool-aid-swilling consumers. While this wouldn’t normally resonate among consumer trends, the December 2011 marks the single-highest increase of people planning on buying a Samsung smartphone in the past four years. That said, it seems Samsung’s left a favorable impression on the minds of potential buyers.

Maybe Samsung’s new market of planned buyers were poached from Apple or maybe they’ve managed to appeal to a sect of consumers who, until now, had remained smartphone-less. When ChangeWave releases their data for March later this year a clearer picture of how (or if) Samsung has chipped into Apple’s market dominance will take a firmer shape.

  • iPhone 4S Users Consume Twice The Data of iPhone 4 Users

iPhone 4S Users Consume Twice The Data of iPhone 4 Users

The next time your wireless provider tries to up the cost of your data plan so that they can pay for more wireless spectrum, you literally have very few people you can blame for this. As it turns out, a mere 1% of (presumably) smartphone users are consuming half of all downloaded mobile data. From a new study released today from Arieso:

Fuelled by new smartphones, apps and services consumer demand for mobile data is accelerating beyond expectations, finds a new report from Arieso. Following a similar study in 2010, Arieso’s new analysis reveals that so-called ‘extreme’ users are becoming even more extreme, with 1% of subscribers now consuming HALF of all downloaded data. One thing is clear: the capacity issues plaguing mobile operators around the world will worsen in 2012.

In case you need a face to sneer at when your wireless provider passes the cost onto you, just look around for the nearest person with an iPhone 4S in hand because they are the hungry, hungry hippos of data usage. The report “finds that users of the iPhone 4S demand three times as much data as iPhone 3G users and twice as much as iPhone 4 users, who were identified as the most demanding in the 2010 study.”

So back to those climbing wireless bills you may see sometime later this year. It’s Econ 101, really: more demand necessitates more supply and that’s gotta come from somewhere; at least it does if the suppliers wanna keep their demanders happy and satiated. In terms of the cell phone business, that supply will come either from developing more sophisticated technology capable of bearing the heavy data load or by annexing more wireless spectrum from the existing market.

“The introduction of increasingly sophisticated devices, coupled with growing consumer demand, is creating unrelenting pressure on mobile networks. The capacity crunch is still a very real threat for mobile operators, and it looks set to only get harder in 2012,” commented Dr. Michael Flanagan, CTO, Arieso and study author. “The mobile industry needs new investment and new approaches to boost network performance and manage the customer experience”.

This elucidates more of the backstory perhaps as to why AT&T and Verizon spent 2011 trying to broaden their shares of the wireless market. Maybe if AT&T takes another stab at acquiring T-Mobile later this year, they’ll be able to rely on data like this to make their case to the FCC so as to patch up the leaky parts of their argument. At any rate, without some kind of solution in the very near future, Flanagan says that “operators risk delivering a sub-par quality of experience to customers” and that “it’s critical that operators redouble their efforts to limit the impact of this inevitable squeeze.”

If the impending “capacity crunch” problem isn’t addressed, you should start learning some anger-management breathing exercises immediately because soon you’ll likely be waiting longer than usual to stream those podcasts you’re so fond of.

  • iPhone 4S Launching In China January 13th

iPhone 4S Launching In China January 13th

Just a few weeks after the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology gave the iPhone 4S their approval early last month, the newest Apple handset is set to arrive in China late next week.

Apple has announced that the 4S will be available in China on January 13th, just ten days before the Chinese New Year. Reports indicate that the smartphone with launch on China Unicom. Regional pricing has yet to be announced.

“Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.”

This huge round of rollouts includes over two dozen other countries, although none as significant as China. Much of the list is comprised of Central American and Caribbean Island nations.

On January 13th, the iPhone 4S will be available in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guam, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and Uganda.

Previous package rollouts of the iPhone 4S took place in much of Europe back in October as well as places like South Korea, Hong Kong and New Zealand in November.

With this next batch of launches, the 4S will be available in nearly 100 countries.

  • Santa’s Newest Little Helper is Siri

Whatever your opinion of the Apple brand, it’s hard to ignore the fact their marketing department certainly “gets” how to do commercials correctly. Whether it’s the iPod’s famous silhouette commercials or the “I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC” series, Apple is quite adept at leveraging the television to promote their brand.

Their latest offering comes just in time for the Christmas rush, and instead of concentrating on a particular device, Apple is showing off Siri, the digital personal assistant that operates via vocal commands. Whether it’s looking for old emails or checking the weather in your area, Siri’s capabilities are what’s being promoted here, not the device itself. Sure, you still need an Apple 4S to use Siri — no, I’m not talking about jailbroken iPhones, either — but Siri’s capabilities are what’s on display here, not the phone.

Considering the time of the year, one person in particular has a busy enough schedule to test even Siri’s capable organization skills. I’m talking about, of course, Santa Claus, who’s only a few short days away from embarking on a delivery mission that shames all other delivery services. When was the last time a UPS driver had to make almost 4 billion deliveries in one night? To help Saint Nick along the way is, of course, Apple’s voice-commanded assistant, reminding Santa of his responsibilities, while delivering messages from Mrs. Claus.

Now, if you’re the type who turns into an Ebenezer Scrooge during this time of year, the Siri/Santa commercial is not for you, but if you’re willing to let your heart grow three sizes and enjoy the season, you might find the commercial pretty endearing, even if you’re not an Apple fanboy.

  • Samsung Galaxy S II Outsells iPhone 4S in UK

Samsung and their Galaxy S II continue to cramp Apple’s style. First, they toss a pie at the face of Apple’s tribe of loyalists, then Samsung wins Pocket-lint’s Gadget Award for Best Phone of the Year and then, only a couple of days later, they manage to fend off the release of Apple’s iPhone 4S and retain the spot of the best selling phone in the UK for November. This latest victory for Samsung marks the eighth consecutive month the Galaxy S II has topped the list of phone sales in the UK.

Some assert that iPhone’s failure to overtake the Galaxy S II in sales is owed to a supply deficiency during the Apple device’s first month on the shelves. However, Samsung has received some attention because of the aggressive initiative taken in targeting Apple and the iPhone 4S with advertisements that attempt to make the case that it’s now cool to not be an affected cool person (This is basically the “I know you are but what am I?” tactic in cellphone battles). So far, Samsung has given no quarter to Apple – they won’t even let Apple be the only company with claims of crotch-combusting technology. That’s some real dedication you got to winning there, Samsung.

It’s a telling sign of the times whenever Apple “fails” to be number one at something and that constitutes news, as if they are perpetually expected to be this juggernaut of technology that topples all competitors without breaking a sweat. That’s the high cost of being awesome a lot, I suppose. At this point it’s hard to conclude whether Samsung’s ad campaign has been pivotal enough to actually depress sales of the iPhone 4S or, as retailers have speculated, if the only thing keeping Apple from trouncing the Galaxy S II in the UK is merely a matter of supply-and-demand. I haven’t seen any data that supports the latter explanation – if you have found any, please post in the comments.

  • Galaxy S II’s Facebook App: Samsung’s Latest Jab At Apple

    Hey, remember these commercials?

You probably do because it was pretty effective in establishing the “cool” cult of personality that most people identify with Mac while simultaneously categorizing PCs as a square, inadequate, and just not very hip to be seen with.

The thing is, Apple may have done too good of a job with this ad campaign, and their competitors have been taking notes. You may have heard about the patent dispute currently going on between Samsung and Apple and, more amusingly, have likely seen Samsung’s latest commercial for their Galaxy S II:

Yup. Samsung is trying to turn the cafeteria tables on Apple by taking a page out of Apple’s own playbook. I gotta admit, that’s a pretty bold swipe Samsung took with their new commercial by accentuating the risible and affected archetype so often associated with Apple’s legion of fans. Stepping up this spirit fight of the hip tech culture, Samsung has now released a Facebook app where users can compare specs of the new Samsung Galaxy S II with the iPhone 4S as well as… an old cordless phone from the 80s and a couple of cans attached by a string. The app also allows visitors to post comments about how much cooler they think the Galaxy S II is than the iPhone4S. While the campaign grabs your attention pretty quickly, there’s also this uncomfortable suggestion of techno-virility (or impotence, depending on which device you use) loaded in each of their tag-lines on this app:

“The next BIG THING is ALREADY HERE.”

    “I’m experiencing serious phone envy.”

“It’s so thin… and that screen is massive!”

See where that’s going yet? Thought so.

Still, lumping the newest iPhone in with examples of communication devices you’d find in an Acme Corporation catalog is a pretty hilarious move from Samsung. It remains to be seen whether it’s effective enough to even cause a blemish on Apple’s shining armor of cool, but this is a pretty good start. What do you think of this latest move in Samsung’s ad push for the Samsung Galaxy S II? Effective or egregious? Leave your comments below
