  • iPhone 5S Launches In August, New iPads Due Next Month [Rumor]

Following yesterday’s rumor of an August 2013 release for the iPhone 5S, iMore reports that another source has confirmed the information. That’s now two reports saying that we should expect the iPhone in August. All of this could turn out false, but two reports confirming the same month seems pretty legitimate.

Aside from launch date rumors, the iPhone 5S’ general design is also touched upon. It’s reported that the 5S will have the same basic design of the current iPhone 5, but feature a spec bump comparable to the bump seen between the iPhone 4 and 4S. It’s specifically mentioned that the iPhone 5S will be getting a better camera, and hopefully one that doesn’t suffer from purple tint.

Interestingly enough, iMore is reporting that Apple may be revealing its next iPad in April. We’ve already heard that the next iPad would be a marked improvement over last year’s surprising, but underwhelming, fourth generation iPad.

It’s also rumored that the company will announce a new iPad Mini next month as well, but it’s unknown if it will feature a retina display.

I don’t know if we should expect a new iPad this early in the year, but Apple has generally announced at least one major product during the first few months of the past few years. Last year’s announcement was for the expansion of iBooks into educational materials, and a similar announcement, alongside new iPads to compliment the feature, would make sense for this year.

  • This Wooden Spoon Doubles as a Stylus

This Wooden Spoon Doubles as a Stylus

In products that are so simple that they’re kind of genius news, I’m probably going to spend a few bucks and grab this new wooden spoon/stylus for my kitchen.

As sites like CHOW, Food 52, and even All Recipes as well as apps like Epicurious continue to replace traditional recipe books for many home cooks, sticky, contaminated iPads and other touchscreen devices become more and more of a problem.

For $7, you can avoid most of this hassle. Meet the ispoon kitchen stylus, a wooden spoon that doubles as a stylus for your in-kitchen touchscreen-using needs.

Just imagine: You grab a handful of ground beef and throw it in the skillet. You grab your wooden spoon to start breaking it up. Oh crap, how much cumin was I supposed to put in there? Now you can either wash your hands, or you can just flip over your spoon and tap your screen to find your answer. Hooray! No more E. coli on your iPad!

Sure, you could wash or wipe your hands between contacting your cooking ingredients and checking the recipe on your iPad. In this regard, this isn’t an essential product. But damnit, it’s cool and I want it.

  • Chrome For iOS Updated With New Features

Chrome For iOS Updated With New Features

Last week, Chrome for Android received a pretty substantial update that added a slew of new features to the mobile browser. At the time, I suggested a similar update would hit iOS sooner rather than later. Google didn’t disappoint as the company has released a new version of Chrome for iOS today.

Unlike the Chrome for Android update, the newest version of Chrome for iOS focuses on adding new functionality to the browser instead of additions to its HTML5 capabilities. The big new feature is a revamp to how searches are displayed in Chrome for iOS. Now you can see your search term in the Omnibox instead of Chrome displaying a long URL.

Chrome For iOS Updated With New Features

Google says that they’ll be rolling out the above change to search over the next few weeks so don’t freak out if you don’t see it immediately after updating. What you will see immediately after updating, however, are two new features that should make any Chrome user happy:

To quickly view your tab history, simply press and hold the back button to access any page you had previously visited from that tab. Head to “Menu” then “Share” to share a web page via email or to your favorite social network. Now you can also share any web page via Messages.

You can grab the newly updated Chrome for iOS here. If you missed the Chrome for Android update from last week, you can grab that here.

  • Amazon Cloud Player Updated And Optimized For iPad

Just because somebody owns an iPad doesn’t mean they use iTunes. There’s a wealth of options available to the iPad owner looking for an app to store their music collection. Amazon’s Cloud Player could be a strong competitor, but the lack of a dedicated iPad app was a hurdle it didn’t overcome until today.

Amazon announced that its Cloud Player app has finally been updated and optimized for the iPad. Just like the iPhone app, Cloud Player lets Amazon Cloud Player subscribers store up to 250 songs for free on the cloud, with support for 250,000 songs coming in at $24.99 a year.

“We introduced our Cloud Player app for iPhone and iPod touch last summer and it’s been incredibly popular with our customers so we’ve now expanded it to iPad,” said Steve Boom, Vice President of Digital Music for Amazon. “Our goal is to make Cloud Player the most widely compatible cloud playback solution available, giving our customers the ability to buy their music once and enjoy it everywhere.”

Amazon Cloud Player may not take over iTunes dominant position on the iPad, but it’s a good alternative for the rare consumer who owns an iPad and an Android phone. Cloud Player can sync songs between both devices for a relatively painless music listening experience.

You can grab the newly iPad optimized Amazon Cloud Player from Apple’s App Store for free.

  • Justin Timberlake’s New Black & White ‘Suit & Tie’ Video Is Directed by David Fincher

After a little bit of a wait, the official video for the new Justin Timberlake single “Suit & Tie ft. JAY Z” is here. It’s black & white, stylish, and directed by The Social Network‘s David Fincher.

It’s not strange that Fincher would direct a Justin Timberlake music video – the two worked together on The Social Network, where Timberlake played Napster founder and Facebook investor Sean Parker. Fincher also has a background in music videos.

“Before Fincher directed his trademark edgy films like Seven, Fight Club, and Panic Room, he cut his teeth making iconic music videos, including Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and The Rolling Stones’ “Love Is Strong”, amongst others,” says Timberlake on his site.

(There was a lyric video that dropped before this, but this is the real deal)

    Check it out:

Did you see the couple of iPad cameos? Clever. Another Fincher project with a fair amount of Apple product placement is the new Netflix original series House of Cards. Fincher directs House of Cards and a Justin Timberlake video – both haevily featuring Apple devices. To complete the circle, I call a Timberlake cameo in next season of House of Cards. What do you say?

The image you see below is of several Atlantic City firefighters swearing allegiance to Steve Jobs in order to be promoted to the ranks of Battalion Chief and Fire Captain.

No, not really. What you’re actually seeing is several Atlantic City firefighters swearing in on a bible iPad app in lieu of an actual bible because someone forgot to bring the actual bible to the ceremony.

  • 128GB iPad Is Now Available In $799 And $929 Models

It seems like only last week that rumors were going around about a possible 128GB iPad. Actually, it was only last week. Apple quickly put the rumors to bed and made the announcement. Now, here we are a week later, and they’re already available to buy.

The device is a 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display. It comes in both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular models. Previous versions came with 64GB of storage.

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Philip Schiller, when the product was announced. “With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

The devices are available in black and white, and they cost $799 and $929 for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular models, respectively. They’re available here.

  • Stratego, Everyone’s Favorite Capture-the-Flag Board Game, Makes Its iPad Debut

I f-ing love Stratego. Let’s get that out of the way. When I think of Stratego, I remember childhood nights spent beating my grandfather in the classic game of capture the flag. HOW DID YOU NOT REMEMBER I HAD A BOMB THERE, PAPA? Of course, he totally remembered and he let me win every time. Still, my memories of Stratego are not adversely affected by that realization.

Well, Stratego fans: you can now play the game on your iPad (multiplayer and single player).

Keesing Games has just released the Official Stratego app for iPad. Yes, it’s just for iPad – not your iPhone or iPod touch. That’s probably for the best, considering there’s about 80 pieces on the board at the onset.

Stratego fans have been able to play on the Web and on Facebook for some time now, and the good news is that you’ll be able to cross-platform play with them on your iPad.

You’ll also have the ability to save your battle setups for quick play, and you can customize your pieces as well.

Unfortunately, I’ve not yet had the chance to play it. CNET calls the game “impressive, if imperfect” and has this to say:

“I…found Stratego to be pretty buggy, alternately crashing, producing error messages, or having trouble signing into Facebook. Plus, the AI is what I’d call overly aggressive, as it never forgets the location of your pieces (once revealed) the way a human would. I won’t say beating the AI is impossible, but at the very least the game should offer a choice of skill levels.”

But against real players, the game is much better.

The game costs $6.99, which is a little steep. But the multiplayer aspect and the ability to save loadouts, along with added achievements and customizable pieces should make it worth it for a hardcore fan of the game. Although, they may considering waiting a little bit to download the game – bugs could be fixed and that price could drop.

  • New iOS 6.1 Adds Fandango Movie Purchasing To Siri’s Capabilities

Back in November, developers who were beta testing Apple’s iOS 6.1 indicated that in the then upcoming version of Apple’s operating system, Siri would let users purchase movie tickets through Fandango. Now, Apple has released the iOS update to all users. Sure enough, Fandango has announced the functionality.

    Here’s a bit from Fandango’s announcement:

iOS 6.1 makes it convenient to purchase tickets through Fandango’s award-winning mobile app. Using iOS devices, moviegoers simply ask Siri to find a specific movie, nearby theaters or desired showtimes. Siri then offers the option to “Buy Tickets” and launches the Fandango app for customers to complete their ticket purchase. For added convenience, moviegoers can add their Paperless Mobile Tickets to Passbook, which lets them scan their iPhone or iPod touch to get into the movie at select theaters.

“Fandango is committed to innovating across all platforms and helping shape the future of moviegoing,” said Paul Yanover , President of Fandango. “With this new Siri feature, movie fans can quickly and easily discover the nearest theaters, find the most convenient showtimes, and buy tickets through Fandango to help make movie night perfect.”

The feature can be used on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices (though we may see Siri make her way to Macs at some point).

  • Apple Actually Announces 128GB iPad

Rumor was going around that Apple was working on a 128GB version of its iPad. Some were skeptical. In an interesting turn of events, Apple actually came out and announced the device without a big event talking about how amazing and magical it is.

The device is a 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display. It comes in both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular models. Previous versions came with 64GB of storage.

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Philip Schiller. “With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

The new devices will be available starting Tuesday, February 5 in black and white. Oh, by the way, they cost $799 and $929 for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular models, respectively.

On Monday, Apple launched iOS 6.1. More on that here.

  • 128GB iPad Could Be In The Works

Some are speculating that Apple might release a 128GB iPad model this year.

As previously reported, a complete redesign is expected to grace the iPad 5, which is expected to be launched in October. A report from iLounge claims to have seen a “supposedly accurate” model of the iPad 5, saying it will be smaller than past (non-mini) models.

Separately, developers have discovered a reference in to 128GB iOS devices in the code in a beta of iOS 6.1. 9to5Mac reports:

Following the latest beta release of the upcoming iOS 6.1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operating system, developers have begun tearing away at the software to see what secrets it may hold about the future of Apple’s devices. @iNeal made the discovery that iOS 6.1 beta 5 holds a reference to compatibility with 128GB iOS devices. Jeff Benjamin dug up the code that @iNeal is referring to, and he has provided screenshots of the evidence. He notes that iOS 6.0 does not include the “128″ system partition code.

Update: We understand that this 128GB code is also found in iOS 6.1 beta 3, which was released in early December.

Still, this may not mean that we’ll be seeing the 128GB model this year. ZDNet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes is particularly skeptical.

Apple released iOS 6.1 today for iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches, bringing LTE capabilities to more carriers.

  • Apple Launches iOS 6.1, Increases LTE Support

Apple announced today that it has updated iOS to version 6.1, adding LTE capabilities to 36 more iPhone carriers and 23 more iPad carriers around the world. Now, more iPhone 5, iPad Mini and iPad with Retina Display users can utilize faster wireless performance.

“iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history,” said Apple SVP Philip Schiller. “iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads.”

According to Apple, iOS users have uploaded over nine billion photos to Photo Stream, sent over 450 billion iMessages and received over four trillion notifications to date.

iOS 6.1 is now available as a free software update, an dis compatible with the following devices: iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation). Still, some features are not available for all products.

LTE, specifically, is available on iPhone 5, iPad mini and fourth generation iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models through certain carriers.

  • iPad 5 To See Complete Redesign, Will Launch In October [Report]

The iPhone 5 was the first major change to Apple’s iconic mobile device since the iPhone 4. The move to a 4-inch display was the most noticeable change, but there was a number of small adjustments that made it another hit for the Cupertino-based company. The same, however, could not be said for the iPad as its fourth iteration featured no discernable aesthetic difference. That all may change this year.

In a report from iLounge, Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Horwitz claims to have seen a “supposedly accurate” physical model of the iPad 5. In his report, he claims that the iPad 5 will be noticeably smaller than its predecessors. In fact, the next-generation iPad will be taking a cue from the iPad Mini by removing the left and right bezels and reducing the size of the top and bottom bezels to only include enough room for the home button and camera.

So, when we will see this supposedly redesigned next-generation iPad? Horwitz says that Apple is targeting an October release after its previously planned March launch slipped through its fingers. The delay is welcome, however, as it gives Apple ample time to perfect the newest iPad into something that may just wow critics after the disappointing fourth-generation iPad.

The iPad 5 may be the star of this report, but Horwitz adds more credence to the rumors of two iPhones launching this year. He says that the iPhone 5S will look much like the iPhone 5, but feature a larger flash. The other iPhone model coming this year is the same rumored cheaper iPhone that features a plastic body. It will be sold to emerging markets like China where most of the population can’t afford the regular iPhone.

As for that rumored bigger iPhone, Horwitz says that it’s in the planning stages. He says that it will feature a 4.7-inch display. You shouldn’t get too excited though as he says it may never come to market. It’s only experimental for now, and it may just remain that way.

  • Apple Posts Record Revenue And Profit Yet Again, But Misses Expectations

Apple just released its earnings report, breaking its own records yet again. The company posted record revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion. These are up from revenue of $46.3 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion in the year-ago quarter.

The company sold 47.8 Million iPhones and 22.9 Million iPads during the quarter, up from 37 million and 15.4 million respectively in the year-ago quarter. Mac sales were down year-over-year at 4.1 million from 5.2 million. iPod sales were down to 12.7 million from 15.4 million.

  • Android Tablet Beats iPad Sales in Japan

A new report from a Japanese publication named Nikkei claims that Apple’s iPad sales in Japan this holiday season were beaten by sales of Google’s Nexus 7.

The report cites a survey from Japanese market research firm BCN, which contacted 2,400 stores across Japan. According to the survey, Google’s Nexus 7 tablet, manufactured by Asus, made up 44.4% of of all tablet sales by volume in December. Apple’s iPad tablets only accounted for 40.1% of December sales. It should be noted that Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets were not included in the survey, “as these devices are primarily sold online.” The larger retailers surveyed, however, cited the Kindle Fire as the third best-selling tablet in their stores.

The publication cites the lower price of the Nexus 7 as a large selling point for the tablet. It also points to the iPad Mini as a possible factor in Apple’s lower iPad sales, and the fact that Apple fans may have already bought the newest version of the iPad when it debuted in November.

Even though the Nexus 7 was able to edge out more sales than the iPad, sales were up for both and the entire tablet market as a whole. Nikkei states that tablet sales in 2012 were 2.8 times those in 2011, with market research firm IDC estimating 2012 tablet sales in Japan to be 3.6 million units. IDC’s estimate for 2013 is $4.9 million tablets sold in Japan.

  • iPad 5 to be “Significantly” Slimmer [RUMOR]

iPad 5 to be “Significantly” Slimmer [RUMOR]

Apple news website Apple Insider reported today that the next version of the iPad – the fifth refresh of the device – will be thinner, lighter, and slimmer than the current version.

Of course, that isn’t much of a rumor. Every iteration of Apple products is expected to be lighter and thinner. However, in this case the rumor pertains to the sides of the device actually becoming slimmer. The thinner bezel seen on the iPad mini is expected to be incorporated into the full-size iPad’s design. Presumably that also means the larger iPad will be getting the software Apple implemented on the iPad Mini to prevent fingers near the bezel from registering as legitimate touch commands.

Apple Insider’s source for the report is an analyst with KGI securities. The analyst also expects the new iPad to be released in the third quarter of 2013. That’s a much more conservative estimate than some analysts, who have pegged the launch of Apple’s refreshed product lineup to early or late spring.

Other 2013 Apple predictions from the analyst include an iPad Mini with Retina display and the unveiling of the iPhone 5S. Also, the long-rumored Apple HDTV has fallen off the radar for 2013. No doubt cable companies’ stubbornness when it comes to unbundling their channel packages prevented Apple from creating something that could truly change the way most people watch TV.

  • Why Is Apple’s Share Price Dropping So Quickly?

When the iPhone 5 launched, it looked like Apple was on top of the world. The company’s stock hit an all time high with an individual share price of $702. Fast forward to today and the company’s individual share price is now sitting at $485. What happened, and can Apple fix it?

It’s easy to see why Apple’s stock was so successful in the months leading up the launch of the iPhone 5. The company was reporting record profits every quarter on massive sales of both of its iPhone and iPad product lines. The launch of the iPhone 5 was in itself a momentous occasion, but it all started to go downhill a little after that.

Only a month after the iPhone 5 launched, Apple announced the iPad Mini. The mini-tablet was Apple’s attempt to directly compete with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD. First impressions are often ugly, however, and investors tore into it. The company’s share price stumbled to about $613-$615.

Since then, the iPad Mini has proven to be a smart move on Apple’s part. Early reports indicate that it’s doing incredibly well, and that it’s even more popular than the iPad. Why is Apple’s stock taking a beating then when everything seems to be going well? It’s because the iPad Mini is more popular than the iPad. Apple envisioned a world where consumers would buy both the iPad and the iPad Mini as a “sidearm” of sorts. Consumers are instead opting to only buy the iPad Mini. That cuts into the company’s profits as it makes less money per iPad Mini sold.

Of course, the iPad Mini only explains one part of the problem. The other problem has only manifested itself recently, and caused a sharp drop in Apple’s stock. A report from Monday said that Apple’s component orders were being cut by half in response to weaker-than-expected demand for the iPhone 5. The news cut through the company’s share price and dropped the price to below $500 for the first time in over a year.

It should be noted that $500 per share is an extraordinary accomplishment, and something that few companies can ever achieve, That being said, it’s rather worrisome to see a company’s stock drop by over $200 in less than six months. Analysts are still remaining optimistic, however, with Value Walk reporting that analysts at Nomura are maintaining a neutral rating for Apple with a target price of $530 per share. It’s below that price for now, but the idea is that Apple will be able to stabilize itself around that price in the coming months.

So how can Apple retain its position as the most profitable company in tech? It’s not exactly an easy prospect as the company has made a name for itself with investors by reporting monster profits every quarter, but that might not help the company sell as much hardware anymore. Following the lead of the iPad Mini, there are now reports of a cheaper iPhone for emerging markets. Apple denies the reports, but there’s enough evidence to say with confidence that Apple is looking to shake up the iPhone brand in some way in 2013. If it is indeed a cheaper phone, investors might not be pleased as it will mean even less profits.

As for everything else, Apple needs to focus on innovation instead of litigation. The company will argue that it’s only protecting the innovations it has introduced to market, but where were the new innovations in the iPhone 5? A slightly bigger screen and Passbook does not an innovative phone make. Android and hardware makers who leverage the OS are running circles around it.

The iPad isn’t fairing much better as Apple introduced a fourth generation iPad in the same year as the third generation was released. The only difference between the two was a faster processor. The company that Steve Jobs built has become too comfortable in its place as the market leader, and is inviting competitors to usurp it.

If Apple really wants to get back on top, it will have to start being a consumer technology company again. Engaging in petty corporate warfare with Google at the expense of its users isn’t going to win them any fans or investor support. For now, it should solely focus on its consumers instead of worrying about any outside threats or influences. Apple was at its best when Steve Jobs did whatever he wanted, and the company needs to recapture that defiant spirit.

  • Cellular iPad Mini, 4th-Gen iPad Coming to China on Friday

Apple has just announced that the Cellular + Wi-Fi versions of their two newest tablet offerings will become available in Chain by the end of the week.

The Cellular + Wi-Fi iPad Mini and 4th-gen iPad with Retina display will launch in China this Friday, January 18th.

The iPad Mini and the 4th-gen iPad will be available through Apple Stores, the Online Store, and other authorized Apple retailers.

The Wi-Fi-only versions of the two devices have been available in China for over a month. They landed in the country back on December 7th, just a week before the iPhone 5 launched there.

“iPad mini with Wi-Fi + Cellular models come in black & slate or white & silver for a suggested retail price of $459 (US) for the 16GB model, $559 (US) for the 32GB model and $659 (US) for the 64GB model. The fourth generation iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models come in black or white for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model.”

The newest iPads are currently available in over 100 countries.

  • 5 New Apple Products This Year, Analysts Say

Analysts from Piper Jaffray think they have Apple’s product release calendar for the year all worked out. If they’re right, then we’ll see 5 new major Apple products launched in 2013.

Of course, there’s always the possibility that this is completely wrong, but let’s look at what they have to say.

CNN Money has put out a report citing analysts Gene Munster and Douglas Clinton, who predict that we’ll see Apple Radio in March, iPad Mini with Retina Display (also in March), iOS 7 and iPhone 5S in June, and Apple Television in November.

We’ve already been hearing rumors about what could be Apple Radio – essentially an Apple competitor to Pandora and the like, though around the same time, the rumors also indicated that an Apple HDTV was unlikely for a 2013 release.

Everyone already expects the iPhone 5S to come out this year (some are still calling it the iPhone 6 – who knows for sure?).

iPad Mini with Retina Display seems like the next logical step for the iPad Mini, which has sold better than many expected.

Interestingly, the analysts don’t include a lower-cost iPhone in their predictions. Such a device has been in the rumor mill this week, with Bloomberg’s sources saying it could be prices between $99 and $149. The device would be aimed at emerging markets like China, where CEO Tim Cook visited this week.

  • A New Reason To Take Your iPad Into The Bathroom [CES 2013]

The Consumer Electronics Show is always full of wonderful inventions, and this year has been no different (well, I guess that depends on who you ask). This year, event-goers got to catch a glimpse of CTA Digital’s iPotty, a training toilet for children, that includes an iPad dock.

“It’s obviously about potty training your kid, and doing it in an entertaining way,” says the presenter in the video, noting that the App Store already has potty training apps.

In fact, there is one called iPotty from Wattz.

Is there anything you can’t do with these “magical” devices?

    Hat tip to Wired.
