  • iOS 7 Release Date Is Officially September 18th

At its big press event, Apple just announced that iOS 7 will be available on September 18th. Tim Cook introduced the event and talked about a few of the company’s latest stats before turning the stage over to Craig Federighi, who revisited the features of the operating system Apple introduced back in June.

The OS has a completely new design and over 200 new features. Apple has provided images and explanations of these on its site since the announcement, and iOS 7 has been available to developers. The news here is that we now know when the general public of iPhone users will get it on their phones.

    Update (from the press release):

iOS 7 will be available as a free software update starting on Wednesday, September 18 for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation). Some features may not be available on all products.

*US English, French and German will be available with the launch of iOS 7. Additional languages will be added over time.
**iTunes Radio will be available with the launch of iOS 7 in the US.

Following the announcement, the company proceeded to announce the new iPhone 5C and 5S.

  • Apple To Host Event On September 10, It’s Probably The iPhone 5S

Are you tired of waiting for the iPhone 5S? Well, you won’t have to wait much longer as Apple has pretty much confirmed when we’ll be seeing it.

Apple sent out some invites this week for an event that it’s hosting on September 10. The invite only has one thing to say – “This should brighten everyone’s day.” An iPhone 5S reveal would probably do that.

Apple To Host Event On Sept. 10

The invite doesn’t explicitly state what we’ll be seeing on September 10, but a report from earlier last month pretty much confirmed that the iPhone 5S would be revealed on that date. It makes sense anyway as Apple revealed its last two smartphones around this time of the year.

So, is that it? Surely, Apple would have something else to show off at its upcoming event, right? As a matter of fact, there are reports that the cheap iPhone, now called the iPhone 5C, will be unveiled at the September 10 event as well. The iPhone 5C is reportedly a plastic iPhone that’s more reminiscent of an iPod and it will come in multiple colors. The device is primarily intended for emerging markets like China, but don’t be surprised if Apple announces it for North America as well.

Beyond the reveal of two new iPhones, we can probably expect some more details regarding iOS 7. Apple revealed its next generation mobile OS at WWDC back in June, but it’s been through a lot of revisions since then thanks to developer feedback. Apple may take some time out to announce some small changes being made to the OS based on that feedback.

As for a new iPad and iPad Mini, that’s still up in the air. I’m more inclined to believe that Apple will give its tablets a separate event later in the year. The iPad Mini was revealed in October of 2012 and I bet that we’ll see something similar this year as well.

  • This Year’s Tablet War Will Begin in September

As shown by nearly every analyst’s estimates, tablet shipments slowed during the second quarter of 2013. It turns out, though, that this past quarter was the calm before the storm, with this September slated to be, quite possibly, the biggest month in tablet computing history.

Google has already launched the refresh of its Nexus 7 tablet, getting out ahead of the competition. According to a DigiTimes report, Amazon is also readying a new lineup of Kindle Fire tablets, to be released in September. The report’s unnamed sources “from the upstream supply chain” also predict that Intel and Google will wade even further into the tablet market with new tablets and “2-in-1 devices.” Intel has scheduled an event on September 15.

While the Android manufacturers fight it out for market share, Apple will also be releasing its new iPad and iPad mini device this fall. The tech company is holding an event on September 10, and is expected to at least reveal, if not release, its new iPads on that day.

Beyond the third and holiday quarters of 2013, some interesting things are on the horizon for the tablet market. Wearable computing is expected to become a large segment, meaning companion apps for tablets are likely. Both Apple and Samsung are also rumored to be working pioneering the mega-tablet market – tablets with screens larger than one foot.

  • Next iPad Will Reportedly Utilize iPad Mini-Like Touch Panel

There’s news out in the iPad rumors department. The Wall Street Journal is reporting today, based on information from “people with knowledge of the matter” that Apple’s next iPad model will make use of the same touch-panel technology the company used in the iPad Mini allowing the device to be light and thin.

The new iPad is reportedly in production as we speak. As noted by iSuppli (via The WSJ):

The defining feature of the iPad mini is its 7.9-inch display, larger than comparable 7.x-inch tablets, whose displays are nearly 1-inch smaller, at just 7.0-inches. The iPad mini employs GF2 multi-touch touchscreen technology, which allows the touchscreen module to be thinner than competing tablets. However, the new GF2 technology also makes manufacturing more challenging during initial production by reducing manufacturing yields.

That report also notes that this all drove up the price for the touchscreen module.

The iPad Mini itself managed to overcome skepticism and become a popular model for Apple.

Other rumors have been circulating that the company is also working on larger iPhones and iPads, and that a new iPad Mini model will be revealed in 2014.

In the meantime, the iPhone 5S is expected to be unveiled at a September 10th event.

Tablet sales are expected to pick up later this year, though Android tablet shipments have reportedly doubled in the past year.

Apple reported its quarterly earnings last month, noting that iPad sales were down to to 14.6 million units compared to last year’s 17 million units.

  • Tablet Sales to Pick Up Later This Year, Shows Analyst Survey

It’s taken only a few short years since the debut of the iPhone for U.S. smartphone adoption to begin to slow, and now it appears that tablets are saturating the U.S. market just as fast.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) this week revealed its market research outlook for the tablet market in the coming quarter. The report shows that 41% of “online U.S. consumers” already own a tablet. A further 40% intend to purchase a tablet within the next two years, and 72% plan to purchase a tablet at some point.

Many U.S. consumers appear to be waiting until the fall to make their tablet purchases, though. New tablet lineups from Amazon and Apple are expected for the holiday season. Google just this month unveiled its refreshed Nexus 7 tablet.

“Tablets faced a relatively stagnant second quarter in 2013, after several consecutive quarters of strong growth,” said Kevin Tillmann, a senior research analyst at CEA. “However, an increase in consumers’ purchase intent indicates optimism. Many consumers are waiting for the next generation of models to upgrade their existing devices.”

The CEA report also covered how U.S. consumers are using their tablets. Gaming has now surpassed social networking as the top tablet activity. Watching movies and messaging were the second and third most popular tablet pastimes, with social networking and shopping also making the top five.

“With nearly half of U.S. households expected to own a tablet in the next 12 to 18 months, tablets are undeniably impacting how consumers view and enjoy digital content,” said Tillmann. “As we move through 2013, anticipation runs high this year for the next wave of tablets to include new and innovative features. Striking the right chord with consumers’ expectations will be imperative to resuming the growth trends we’ve seen prior to this quarter’s purchase stagnation.”

  • Android Tablet Shipments Nearly Doubled in Past Year

The modern tablet market, much like the smartphone market before it, was almost entirely created by Apple. Once again, however, the more open Android operating system now appears to be dominating the space that Apple pioneered.

According to second quarter shipment numbers from analyst firm Strategy Analytics, Android-based tablets now account for a full two-thirds of the tablet market. 34.6 million Android tablets were shipped during the second quarter of 2013, almost double the 18.5 million tablets that shipped during the second quarter of 2012.

“Global branded tablet shipments reached 36.2 million units in Q2 2013, up 4% from 24.6 million in Q2 2012,” said Peter King, director of the tablet division at Strategy Analytics. “The branded tablet market had a rest period as very few new products came to market during the quarter. When we add in white-box tablets, shipments reached 51.7 million units, up 43% from 36.1 million in Q2 2012. Android is now making steady progress due to hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, Google and White-Box tablets which, despite the fact that branded OEMs are lowering price-points and putting pressure on the white-box manufacturers, are still performing well.”

Apple did not fare as well during the second quarter. The company’s iPad shipments were down year-over-year, and its tablet market share has now fallen to 28.3% – a drastic drop from its 47.2% market share one year ago.

“Apple iOS shipments were 14.6 million iPads in Q2 2013 which declined 14% annually,” said King. “In the same quarter a year ago the first ‘Retina’ display iPads were launched which could partly explain the decline as there were no new models in this quarter. However, to compensate that, iPad Mini which was not available a year ago, now freely available was expected to take the figure higher than 14.6 million.”

The quarterly report also found that Windows 8 now has a full 4.5% share of the tablet market, up from only 0.5% last year. Microsoft recently cut the price of its Surface RT tablets to $349 due to slow sales of the device.

  • Apple Brings In $35.3 Billion, Sold 31 Million iPhones In Q3

Apple’s third quarter was going to be interesting no matter how you look at it. The company hasn’t released any major hardware all year, and its year old iPhone 5 had to fight off competition coming from new devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. With all that in mind, Apple did pretty good for itself this year, especially with the iPhone.

Apple announced today in its third quarter earnings that it pulled in $35.3 billion in revenue and quarterly net profit of $6.9 billion. That’s a little up from the previous third quarter revenue of $35 billion, but its net profit was down from the previous third quarter’s $8.8 billion. The company noted that international sales accounted for 57 percent of its third quarter revenue.

As for individual device sales, iPhone sales were way up at 31.2 million units sold during the third quarter. The company only sold 26 million iPhones in the previous third quarter. It wasn’t quite as sunny for Apple’s other hardware, however, as iPad sales were down to 14.6 million units sold from last year’s 17 million units. Mac sales were also down a little to 3.8 million units from last year’s 4 million.

“We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.”

As for its fourth quarter, Apple predicts that we’ll see the following:

  • revenue between $34 billion and $37 billion
  • gross margin between 36 percent and 37 percent
  • operating expenses between $3.9 billion and $3.95 billion
  • other income/(expense) of $200 million
  • tax rate of 26.5%
  • Despite the decrease in profit, Apple is up 21 points in after hours trading.

  • Apple Is Working On Larger iPhones, iPads [Report]

A rumor emerged last week that Apple had delayed the public unveiling of the iPhone 5S so that it could implement a larger display at the last minute. Now a new report suggests that Apple is considering larger displays for all of its devices.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple’s Asian suppliers are currently testing larger displays for the company’s devices. To be more specific, Apple is testing iPhone display sizes larger than 4-inches, and it’s also looking into a 13-inch display for the iPad.

These devices will probably not see the light of day this year, or anytime soon for that matter. The WSJ is quick to point out that Apple is only testing these new display sizes. There’s no word yet on whether or not Apple actually wants to make a larger iPhone or iPad.

Of course, a larger iPhone is far more feasible than a larger iPad at this point. It’s been rumored for months now that Apple would be introducing a larger iPhone in 2014. Many point to increased competition from Samsung and its larger screens as the leading cause behind Apple’s decision to increase the display sizes of its own devices.

What’s interesting about this latest report, however, is that it shows an Apple that might start offering more than one display size. Instead of alienating one consumer base in favor of another, Apple might try to be like Samsung and offer a display size for every need. What this means is that we might soon see an iPhone that’s offered in both 4 and 5-inch variants.

As for the iPad, it’s hard to see Apple going for a 13-inch display just yet. The WSJ’s supply sources confirmed just as much by saying that the new iPad will remain at 9.7-inches. The only difference between the new and old iPad is that the new one will be thinner, and use touch sensors with a thin film instead of glass for the display.

All of this doesn’t change the fact that we’re going to see a new iPhone and iPad this year. Like usual, we’ll be seeing the new iPhone first with its launch reportedly set for August. Production on the new iPad has just started to ramp up this month so we’ll probably not see new tablets from Apple until September or October.

  • New Google Maps Hits iPhone, iPad

Back at Google I/O, Google revealed it’s big new Google Maps redesign. Last week, the company announced the new look and features for Android, and now has launched them for iOS.

The update includes enhanced search and navigation features, and a tablet-specific Maps experience for iPad users (the Android release also has a Tablet-dedicated version).

    Enhanced Search

“A dedicated tablet design brings all the features of Google Maps, including Street View, to a larger screen, which makes exploring the world from the comfort of your living room engaging and fun,” says Google Maps director Daniel Graf. “Go from the Colosseum to your local pizza joint in just a few taps.”

If you’re the pizza joint owner, by the way (or any other business owner), you should probably look into finding a Google Trusted Photographer to get your imagery involved.

“When you’re stuck in traffic and wondering what the holdup is, use Google Maps on your iPhone to get live incident reports on road closures, construction, accidents, and more,” says Graf. “And as always, you’ve got voice guided, turn-by-turn navigation, and live traffic conditions right on the map. If you prefer public transportation, Google Maps has schedule information for more than one million public transit stops around the world.”

The app comes with turn-by-turn directions and voice-guided navigation for over 330,000 miles of trails, baths and bike lanes for bicyclists.

It also features the new Explore feature, which highlights places to eat, drink, shop, etc. that are nearby.

  • New iPad Mini Delayed to 2014 [RUMOR]

Apple’s iPad mini was released last November, and not one week went by before rumors about Apple’s refresh of the product began to circulate. Though the rumors quickly subsided, most of them centered around the device getting an upgraded “Retina” display.

Now, it appears that Apple might miss its yearly (and expected) product refresh for the iPad Mini. DigiTimes today is reporting that production on the second iteration of the iPad Mini will not begin until the fourth quarter of 2013. The report cites unnamed “industry supply chain sources” as stating the late manufacturing orders will push the product’s launch past the holiday season and into next year.

The device is expected to have the same 7.9-inch screen as the current iPad Mini, but with a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution screen, according to DigiTimes’ sources. Also, the already small bezel on the iPad Mini is expected to get even smaller, for a nearly bezel-free form factor.

Though the iPad Mini might not make it out for Christmas, DigiTimes is also reporting that that the fifth-generation iPad will be sold sometime in 2013. The device is, unsurprisingly, rumored to be both thinner and lighter than the most current iPad. Production on the new iPad is rumored to begin sometime in July.

  • Duolingo Finally Launches an iPad App

Duolingo, the free language learning service with a wonderfully simply, but brilliant premise, has finally optimized their iOS app to be fully functional on the iPad. And they haven’t just made the previous iOS app bigger – they’ve added a new sidebar that makes learning languages on the iPad a more immersive experience.

With the new iPad app, Duolingo says that “you’ll have more screen space to browse your skill tree, see friends, and type in answers.” Along with this update, you can now use Duolingo in landscape mode. The coolest new feature for the iPad comes in the form of a new sidebar, however. When accessed, the sidebar will show you all your stats – your points, words learned, and consecutive days used. It’ll also show you the social leaderboard where you can see how you stack up against others in terms of your language learning progress.

After a lengthy beta period, Duolingo first opened to the public back in June of 2012. It’s a deceptively simple process – Duolingo feeds you words and phrases and lets you improve your language skills by translating them back and forth between the new language you’re trying to learn and your native language. Each time you use Duolingo, you are participating in a giant crowdsourced translation of the web.

“Duolingo leverages the brain power of millions of people who are currently learning a new language to help translate the web,” said Luis von Ahn, co-founder of Duolingo at launch. “So much of the web is partitioned off by language barriers. With more than a billion people on the planet learning a new language, I knew this was the ultimate opportunity to not only provide accessible education resources, but also make the internet a truly world wide web.”

Von Ahn told TechCrunch that Duolingo can now boast over 5 million active users and 20% of the app’s traffic came from people using the old iPhone-only app on their iPads – so it was high time that they developed a dedicated iPad app.

You can grab the new app today over at the App Store.

  • Get Some Amazing iOS Games For Free This Week

iOS is a fantastic platform for apps and games. Sure, there’s a lot of crap, but iOS has also given birth to some of the most innovative titles in mobile gaming. You may not believe that statement, but now you have a chance to try these games out for yourself for free this week.

Kotaku reports that many of the best apps and games for iOS are going free in celebration of Apple’s App Store turning five on July 10. There’s a lot of good stuff here, and you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t pick up at least a few of these games for free during the sale.

Here’s everything that’s on sale so far, but more apps and games will probably go free throughout the rest of the week. Oh, and before you ask, the iPad versions of the following apps are free as well:

    Tiny Wings
    Badland
    Sword & Sworcery
    Infinity Blade 2
    Where’s My Water
    The Idiot Test 3
    Pig Shot
    Glow Puzzle
    Real Steel
    War of Reproduction
    Liquid Sketch
    Day One Journal
    Traktor DJ
    Over
    Barefoot World Atlas
    How to cook everything
    Map My Ride +
    Knots 3D

Now, maybe you feel that you must be more selective even if everything above is free. Might I suggest then that you at least download Badland, Sword & Sworcery and Infinity Blade 2 while they’re free. Those three games are some of the best that iOS has to offer, and you won’t be disappointed by the experience.

As I said above, more games will be going on sale in the coming days as the App Store doesn’t actually turn five until Wednesday. The above games just happened to jump the gun a little bit, but that’s definitely not a bad thing.

If you want to stay up to date on which games and apps are going free, Techtola is keeping a constantly updated list.

  • Deus Ex: The Fall Is Not The Sequel You Were Expecting

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a reboot done right. It respected the vision of the original title, while updating the gameplay and presentation to modern standards. By all accounts, it was a massive success. Now Square Enix is trying to capitalize on that success with a new entry for mobile devices.

Deus Ex: The Fall, developed by Square Enix’ mobile division and Eidos Montreal, is the latest title in the blockbuster franchise. The title will focus on a new character – Ben Saxon – as he attempts to uncover a global drug supply conspiracy.

The title may prove to be controversial, however, as it’s a mobile exclusive title. That being said, the developers are confident that they can deliver the Deus Ex experience on mobile devices.

“We’re really excited to continue the Deus Ex series on mobile and start a new journey”, said Jean-François Dugas, Executive Game Director at Eidos-Montréal. “The team has done an incredible job creating a whole new story and controls for intuitive touch screen gameplay, whilst staying true to the Deus Ex universe. Players can expect exploration, action, hacking, stealth, social enhancers, player choice and consequence – the full Deus Ex experience.”

Deus Ex: The Fall looks great for a mobile title, but some people will not be able to get around that fact. For them, Square Enix is also releasing Deux Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut in the near future. The Wii U title improves upon many aspects of the original game, including the terrible boss fights.

Deus Ex: The Fall will be released this summer on iOS devices for $6.99. There’s no word on an Android release.

  • Learn How To Make Interactive Google+ Posts On iOS

Facebook may be integrated into iOS, but it doesn’t mean every developer wants to integrate Facebook into their app. In fact, some prefer Google+. For those developers, Google is now hosting a number of tutorials that teach developers how to get the most out of Google+ on iOS.

Last week, Google showed developers how to integrate Google+ Sign-In on iOS. Now the Google+ team is showing developers how to integrate interactive posts in Google+ on iOS.

Check out Google’s documentation if you want to learn more about integrating interactive Google+ posts into iOS.

  • Apple Reports Record Quarter, Made $43.6 Billion In Q2

In its second quarter earnings report, Apple says that it made $43.6 billion in revenue and $9.5 billion in profit. Apple pulled in more revenue than Q2 2012’s $39.2 billion, but it made less than last year’s $11.6 billion profit. The company also noted that 66 percent of its revenue came from international sales.

“We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline.”

For hardware, Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones in the quarter. It’s a noticeable increase from the 35.1 million iPhones sold in the year-ago quarter. It also sold 19.5 million iPads, which is a pretty sizable increase from the 11.8 million iPads sold in the year-ago quarter. The company’s saw a small decrease as it sold a little under 4 million Macs compared to the year-ago quarter’s 4 million Macs.

“Our cash generation remains very strong, with $12.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter and an ending cash balance of $145 billion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO.

Apple expects the following earnings results for Q3 2013:

  • revenue between $33.5 billion and $35.5 billion
  • gross margin between 36 percent and 37 percent
  • operating expenses between $3.85 billion and $3.95 billion
  • other income/(expense) of $300 million
  • tax rate of 26%
  • Apple will be be live streaming its Q2 2013 financial results conference call today at 2:00 p.m. PST/5:00 p.m. EST. You can listen in here.

  • Google Launches Fiber TV App on iPad

Google Launches Fiber TV App on iPad

iPad users in Kansas City, rejoice! Starting today, you’ll be able to control your Google Fiber TV with your device, just like Android users.

Google has just released the Google Fiber TV app on iPad. This is the first time that it has appeared for iOS, but it is still not available for iPhone yet.

The Google Fiber TV app lets users find new TV shows and movies, as well as record directly to their DVR. Google says that iPad users can use the app to browse, buy, and watch on-demand content as well.

Android device owners have had this capability for just over a month.

Of course, this announcement only affects a pretty small group of people – iPad users in the Kansas City area. But that’s going to change soon as Google has announced plans to expand their Fiber service to Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

Last week, Google announced that they were finally bringing HBO and Cinemax to Fiber TV.

You can grab the app today in the App Store.

  • Could A Yahoo-Apple Deal Spell Trouble For Google?

The competitive landscape surrounding Google gets more and more interesting by the day. Now two of its rivals, one of which is being run by someone who probably knows Google’s inner workings more intimately than most of its current employees, are talking about teaming up.

Apple and Yahoo are said to be in talks about possibly integrating Yahoo products more into iOS, the the operating system powering the iPhones, iPods and iPads in millions of hands.

Should Google be worried? What would you like to see out such a partnership? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Any increased integration of Yahoo into iOS would only add on to existing Yahoo Finance and weather data that come on the operating system today.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the two companies have been “discussing how more of Yahoo’s services can play a prominent role on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices,” citing people briefed on the matter. Such possibilities could include, according to the Journal’s sources, “more content from Yahoo News and its other web properties loaded onto Apple devices or available through an expanded Siri partnership.”

A deal is not imminent, the report says.

The Journal isn’t the only publication with sources talking about this. Bloomberg cites “a person familiar with the matter” as saying executives from both companies have “discussed ways to collaborate more closely on mobile software”:

Yahoo Chief Executive Officer (and longtime Googler) Marissa Mayer has met with Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet services, to explore ways Yahoo can be more deeply integrated into the software that runs on the iPhone and iPad, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Mayer has been very clear about how important mobile is to the company’s strategy going forward since she took over as CEO last year. This would obviously be a huge step in making sure smartphone users are accessing Yahoo content on a regular basis. Depending on what kinds of integrations we see, it could turn out to be a pretty big deal for Yahoo’s piece of the search market as well, and would give Yahoo an interesting partner should the Microsoft alliance fall apart.

The part about Siri is particularly interesting, and that could mean any number of things. One thing it can at least enable us to imagine is a search-related partnership. Yahoo, of course, outsources its search to Bing on the back-end, but Yahoo’s relationship with Microsoft seems to be souring. Apple’s with Google, meanwhile, is too.

Yahoo has expressed how important search still is to it as a company in recent months, and now they have one of the biggest names in the search industry running the show. It was a different story when Yahoo went the Bing route.

The Motley Fool even makes an interesting case for why Apple should (but probably won’t) just buy Yahoo. “Yahoo! already provides some of the default iOS apps for stock quotes and weather. Perhaps more importantly, Yahoo! isn’t Microsoft or Google,” writes Rick Munarriz. “Mr. Softy and Big G are Apple’s two biggest rivals, though these days Google has become the bigger enemy as Android conquers the smartphone and now tablet markets. Apple tried to distance itself from Google last year, going with a homegrown default solution to Apple Maps.”

“Right,” he continues. “We know how badly that played out for Apple. Any bone that Apple could throw Yahoo! is one less bone that it would either throw out to Google or possibly mess up on its own.”

I don’t expect any acquisition announcements to be made anytime soon, but it’s interesting to consider.

Even with the right partnership between Apple and Yahoo, Google could suffer significantly in terms of search market share. Let’s not forget that Yahoo used to rule the search space, and now it has a seasoned veteran from the current king of search running the show. What if iOS made its way to using Yahoo as the default search? How many would bother to change it to Google?

Google and Apple have had a search deal in place for about a decade. Few details are known about this deal. Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land recently shared a couple of analysts’ theories:

An analyst at Macquarie Capital estimated that Google was making $1.3 billion annually in paid search revenue from iOS devices. Macquarie speculated that Google returned about $1 billion of that to Apple as part of the agreement that made Google the default search engine on the Safari browser….Another financial analyst has come up with a similar annual estimate of the value of Google’s default iOS search deal with Apple: $1 billion. Morgan Stanley’s Scott Devitt is responsible for the new estimate…Devitt disagreed with Macquarie, arguing that the structure of the relationship is probably not a “revenue sharing” deal but instead a straight fee-per-device payment from Google to Apple. Devitt believes that Google pays Apple roughly $3.20 per iOS device, which would avoid the accounting issues arising from a revenue sharing agreement.

Sterling himself wrote, “While it’s extremely unlikely that Apple would try and make Siri into a full-fledged search engine, it could significantly beef up Siri’s content search and discovery capabilities. In that capacity, Apple might be able to siphon off selected commercial queries in key categories such as local, travel and entertainment.”

As we have discussed repeatedly, including in this recent article, the biggest threat to Google’s search market share is the gradual chipping away at it by various vertical services. Even if Yahoo only supplied some of the content on Siri (regardless of whether it became the actual default search on iOS), Siri could continue to improve with increased integration across other services, and rendering Google less of a need for users, little by little.

Obviously, how this really plays out is anybody’s guess. Apple and Yahoo may not even expand their partnership at all, when it’s all said and done. Still, if I were Google, I might be a little nervous about what these companies are discussing.

Should Google be worried? Let us know what you think.

  • New iPad Leaked Photos Make The Rounds (Authenticity Unconfirmed)

French tech blog NowhereElse.fr, known mostly for frequent Apple product-related leaks and rumors has posted a couple of new allegedly leaked iPad photos showing the bezel of the upcoming device.

Obviously the authenticity of these is questionable. Either way, here’s what it looks like.

    Mind blown yet?

The images do appear to confirm recent reports of a redesign. As Zach Epstein at BGR notes, “An image of the new iPad’s purported rear shell was published this past January, showing a redesigned case that closely resembles the iPad mini.”

Recent rumors have suggested that fifth-generation iPads will begin production in July or August.

  • You Can Play Injustice: Gods Among Us Right Now… On Your iPhone

Injustice: Gods Among Us, the DC fighter from NetherRealm Studios, isn’t set to launch on consoles until April 26. If you really need your Injustice fix now, however, you might want to try the recently released game for iOS.

Thankfully, the iOS version of Injustice isn’t a poorly constructed fighting game for mobile platforms. Instead, the team has created a thoughtful title that combines the cinematic fights of its console brother with an accessible collectible card game mechanic that players can use to level up their fighters.

As an added bonus, Injustice for iOS unlocks exclusive content in the console version of the game. It’s not being said what can be unlocked, but it’s probably a few costumes or other aesthetic rewards. Still, it’s better than nothing.

You can grab Injustice for iOS here. It’s a free-to-play title supported by microtransactions that aren’t exactly micro. There’s something definitely wrong when an in-game item costs $100, but that debate is for another time.

  • Stolen iPad Pictures Lead To Some Fun For Victim

Allen Engstrom left his iPad on a plane, where it was apparently stolen (unless you belong to the “finders keepers” camp). He still doesn’t have the device in his possession, but he’s gaining plenty of entertainment value from it.

The person who Engstrom believes has the iPad has been taking photos of herself, and they’ve been appearing in his iCloud account, so he can see what she looks like and the faces she is making.

ABC 10 News out of Little Rock reports:

Engstrom says the woman is taking “selfies” — or self portraits — with the iPad.

She probably has no idea that her pictures are backing up to my iPhone, Engstrom said.

So far, he’s received more than a dozen photos.

Engstrom is not only having fun viewing the photos with his family, however. He’s taking it a step further and uploading them to Facebook for the world to enjoy. Here are some he shared on Facebook along with the captions he provided:

Hey cool! This is an actual pic of the wonderful person who stole my iPad. Apparently the pics she is taking of herself are backing up and appearing on my phone. No I’m not kidding, this is really happening. — with Ugly McCrazy Shirt.

    Stolen iPad pictures

The wonderful person who snaked my iPad continues to take glamour shots of herself apparently unaware that they are backing up to my iPhone. So naturally I’m blasting them out to the entire world. Enjoy!

The pictures are already generating a great deal of buzz on the web, and are even hitting the search trends. I wonder how long it will be until the the subject of the photos sees them in an article like this.

  • Android Tablets To Overtake The iPad This Year

Android Tablets To Overtake The iPad This Year

Android devices may be locked in a heated battle for supremacy with the iPhone, but the iPad has never really had much competition. Cheaper devices, like the Nexus 7, has ensured that some players find some form of success, but Apple is still the company to beat in the tablet market. That all may change this year.

IDC released a revised tablet market forecast for the year today with the major takeaway being that Android tablets may finally become the dominant player in the market. The availability of cheap tablets, most noticeably Android tablets, will lead to tablet shipments to see a sizable increase this year.

The firm predicts that the worldwide tablet market will ship 190.9 million devices over the course of this year with Android making up 48.8 percent of the shipments. Apple isn’t too far behind, however, with 46 percent of total shipments. Android may become the dominant player this year thanks to the wide breadth of options available, but it’s incredibly impressive to see Apple stand toe-to-toe in shipments with only three models.

Both iOS and Android will see some losses in their marketshare over the next five years as Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets start to take hold. IDC predicts, however, that these Windows tablets will be much like their Windows Phone 8 counterparts – a distant third place with Windows 8 tablets expected to only command 7.4 percent of the market by 2017.

“Microsoft’s decision to push two different tablet operating systems, Windows 8 and Windows RT, has yielded poor results in the market so far,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets. “Consumers aren’t buying Windows RT’s value proposition, and long term we think Microsoft and its partners would be better served by focusing their attention on improving Windows 8. Such a focus could drive better share growth in the tablet category down the road.”

Android Tablets Will Overtake The iPad This Year

Those who prefer eReaders over tablets may not like what’s coming next as IDC’s final prediction for the next five years sees the tablet precursors only having a few more years of growth ahead of it before the market starts an irreversible downward trend in 2015. By then, however, most consumers will have probably switched to multimedia tablets as the market will drive down prices to super affordable levels by then.
