  • Kindle Fire Getting A Ten Inch Model Later This Year [RUMOR]

Amazon may be planning to launch a new, larger version of their popular Kindle Fire tablet later this year. The new 10.1-inch Kindle Fire would launch alongside the second generation 7-inch Kindle Fire sometime in the second half of the year.

According to DigiTimes, the launch of a 10.1-inch Kindle Fire signals a shift in Amazon’s focus for the device. Amazon has previously focused the entire Kindle line – including the Kindle Fire – on the e-reader market that Amazon effectively created with the original Kindle. A new 10.1-inch Kindle Fire could mean that Amazon is more aggressively targeting the tablet market, perhaps in a desire to more directly compete with Apple’s new iPad.

DigiTimes also reports that while maintaining its orders of touch screen panels from various manufacturers, Amazon has been reducing the number of e-ink screens (i.e., for the other Kindle models) it orders from E Ink Holdings. The Kindle Fire, which was released late last fall, made a strong showing over the 2011 holiday season, selling nearly 4 million units.

What do you think? Would you like to see a 10.1-inch Kindle Fire? Let us know what you think in the comments.

  • New iPad May Be Getting 1GB Of RAM

New iPad May Be Getting 1GB Of RAM

At yesterday’s media event Apple showed off quite a few of the new iPad‘s biggest and best features: the long-awaited retina display, 4G connectivity, the dual-core A5X processor with quad-core graphics, and more. Even more of the new tablet’s specs are available on Apple’s website. One important piece of information, however, is notably absent from the information Apple has released about the new iPad: its RAM.

Apple has been pretty notorious in the past for underpowering iOS devices when it comes to RAM. The original iPad only had 256MB of RAM, and while the iPad 2 got a bump, it only went up to 512MB. There has been speculation that the new iPad would finally get 1GB of RAM, but Apple didn’t mention it yesterday, nor is there any reference to the tablet’s RAM on the tech specs page.

Those who worry that the new iPad will be getting short shrift in the RAM department can rest a little easier, though. Citing knowledgeable sources, The Verge is reporting that the new iPad does indeed feature 1GB of RAM. Of course, this won’t be confirmed until the new iPad ships and someone takes it apart to check, but it’s hard to imagine that Apple would upgrade so many of the iPad’s features and leave its “poster child for the post-PC world” with a mere 512MB of RAM.

  • New iPad 4G Models’ Shipping Dates Already Delayed

New iPad 4G Models’ Shipping Dates Already Delayed

Less than 24 hours after the new iPad was unveiled and put up for pre-sale, some of its models have already been delayed. In terms of shipping dates, some 4G enabled models on AT&T’s network have been pushed back three days.

Over at the Apple online store, it appears that the biggest demand so far is for white 4G enabled models. Both the 16GB 4G model ($629) and the 64GB 4G model on AT&T show a delayed shipping date of March 19th. As you may recall from our coverage of the iPad event on Wednesday, Apple said they would be releasing the new iPad on March 16th.

And that’s still the case for all of the other models as of right now. All of the Wi-Fi only iPads as well as all of the models on Verizon are still showing March 16th. And all of the black 4G models on AT&T are also still on schedule.

Of course, this is likely to change at any moment, as anxious iPad fans flood the online store with pre-orders.

March 16th is a big day for Apple, as they will launch the new iPad (yep, the “new iPad”) in 10 different countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Japan.

The new iPad sports a 2048×1536 Retina display and an all-new quad-core A5X processor. It also has a new iSight camera and voice dictation. With the launch of the new iPad, Apple also brought iPhoto to the device along with officially launching iOS 5.1.

  • New iPad Keeps Old Data Plan Prices

New iPad Keeps Old Data Plan Prices

Along with the retina display, the big news from Apple’s big media event yesterday was that the new iPad would be getting 4G LTE connectivity. The same two carriers who offered 3G data plans on the iPad 2 – Verizon and AT&T – will also be offering them for the new iPad. What’s more, it appears they’ll be offering them at the same price. According to the iPad pre-order page on the Apple Store website, data plan pricing appears unchanged, despite the upgrade from 3G to 4G. Check out the price lists below:

    New iPad Data Plans

Both plans also retain the pay-as-you go pricing model, which means there still aren’t any contracts to sign and you can adjust your plan on a month-by-month basis as needed. It also looks like those who got the unlimited data plan with the original iPad in 2010 can still be grandfathered in with the new iPad. Of course, an “unlimited” data plan with AT&T doesn’t mean what it once did, since AT&T announced that they would throttle the connections of users who go over 3GB per month on 3G connections, and 5GB per month on 4G LTE.

Additionally, as we reported yesterday, the price points for the new iPad have also stayed the same. The 16GB Wi-Fi only model is still $499, with increases of $100 each for the 32GB and 64GB models, and a $130 increase for 4G LTE models.

    New iPad Price Grid

Of course, the fact that the iPad now has 4G capability means that you can be certain the next iPhone (“the new iPhone“?) will have the same. We’ll have to wait and see if data plan prices stay the same on the 4G iPhone.

Will you be getting a 4G iPad? Are you surprised that the data plan prices are staying the same? Let us know in the comments.

  • New iPad May Mean The End of Numbered Apple Devices

At yesterday’s media event Apple unveiled their third generation iPad with several new (though mostly expected) features: retina display, better camera, and 4G LTE, and iOS 5.1. One new feature of the iPad surprised pretty much everyone, though: the name. After months of speculation about the “iPad 3,” reports started to surface that the tablet would actually be called the iPad HD.

As it turned out, everybody was wrong. The new iPad’s name does away with all the modifiers. It’s just “the new iPad.” This has left a lot of industry watchers scratching their heads. In a way, though, it makes sense. Most companies – including most of Apple’s with their other products – don’t bother with giving each new iteration of a device its own unique name. What generation is the current iPod Nano? Or, for that matter, what about the red-headed step child of the iOS family, the iPod Touch? What about the latest MacBook? The iMac?

For the most part, new devices aren’t given their own names, and for the most part consumers don’t care. Sure it makes things easier for retailers, accessory makers, and industry watchers. But for consumers it really doesn’t make much real difference. Most consumers – especially the less tech savvy ones – who walk into a store looking for the latest iPad aren’t going to ask for the iPad 2 or the iPad HD. They’re going to ask for “the new iPad.” In that sense, then, Apple’s naming choice makes sense. It brings the iPad into line with most of the rest of Apple’s products, and it recognizes the way that most of Apple’s customers shop.

Of course, Apple’s choice for the iPad’s name raises some interesting questions about other Apple products. What about next year’s iPad? Will it be the “New New iPad“? More importantly, what does that mean for the next iPhone? Most speculation has been calling it the iPhone 5. Some have suggested the iPhone 6 (it is, after all, the sixth generation iPhone). But if Apple is dropping modifiers from device names, then it’s a pretty safe bet that when Tim Cook next takes the stage (in September or October?) it will be to announce “the new iPhone.”

What do you think of “the new iPad”? Is it a smart move on Apple’s part, or a mistake? Let us know in the comments.

  • iTunes Updated To 10.6 Following Apple TV, iPad Announcement

It also includes a few security tweaks, some performance updates for iCloud, improved performance for iTunes Match, and improvements to the way iTunes downloads and displays album artwork.

The new iPad and the new Apple TV are both available for pre-order from the Apple Store. You can pre-order now for delivery on March 16th (which is also when they are available in stores). • Apple Ups 3G Download Limit To 50 MB

On the heels of their big new iPad unveiling party, Apple has officially raised the size limit on apps downloaded via data network (3G, and now 4G LTE). Before, users could only download an app over 3G if it was under 20MB. If it exceeded that size, users would see a message that ever iOS’er is quite used to: “This item is over 20MB – You must connect to a Wi-Fi network or use iTunes on your computer to download it.”

Now, that limit has been raised to 50MB, as first spotted by AppAdvice. This new limit now applies to all types of media – music, videos, and apps.

The reason for this change most certainly has to do with the new iPad that was announced earlier this afternoon. It sports a super high-def Retina display with a 2048×1536 resolution. That means that Apple has crammed 3.1 million pixels into its 9.7-inch screen.

This upgrade was reported to be a problem for over-the-air app downloads, as many files now had to be larger to support both the new Retina display as well as the older, less-capable displays. This meant that too many apps would cross that 20MB threshold and thus only be available for download via wireless.

The new iPad will not only have the retina display, but will come with 4G LTE as well. It will hits stores on March 16th and will start at $499.

  • Apple Unveils “Resolutionary” Retina Display iPad

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage in San Francisco today for his second major product launch since taking the reins of Apple from Steve Jobs last year. The new iPad (not the iPad 3 or iPad HD, just the new iPad).

While not exactly revolutionary, the new iPad does sport some pretty cool new features. Foremost among these is the long-awaited retina display. People have been predicting a retina display iPad since Apple introduced the technology in 2010 with the iPhone 4. With the new iPad, we finally have it.

    New iPad Retina Display

The new iPad’s 2048×1536 display has squeezes a staggering 3.1 million pixels into a 9.7-inch display (which is the same size as the iPad 2). For reference, a 27-inch iMac display is 2560×1440, and your average HDTV is 1920×1080.

    Better than an HDTV

The new iPad’s retina display is great news for those who want to edit photos on the go. With iPhoto for iPad, the new iPad’s retina display can handle images up to 19 megapixels and provide users an impressive array of options for tweaking their photos.

    iPhoto for iPad

Gaming gets a major boost with the new iPad’s retina display, as well. The A5X processor is designed to handle graphics quickly and smoothly. Games like Sky Gamblers and Infinity Blade: Dungeon, which were shown off at the event, will deliver retina display graphics almost immediately. Other game makers will undoubtedly follow suit soon.

  • New Apple TV Launches For $99 On March 16

While everybody was tuned into the Apple event today for The New iPad reveal, Apple snuck in an announcement for an improved and cheaper Apple TV.

While the Apple TV has been in existence for some time now, the new Apple TV will feature 1080p programming that integrates cloud-based iTunes movies and TV shows into its programming. It also supports Netflix, Vimeo, photos and more audio-visual content all in HD.

On top of the announcement, it was also revealed that iCloud will now support movies and TV shows from the iTunes store. This will allow users to stream video content onto their HDTVs through Apple TV. Users can also stream content from their iPad or iPhone 4S onto the Apple TV.

“People are going to love streaming movies and TV shows in 1080p with the new Apple TV, and photos look beautiful displayed at the maximum resolution of your TV,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Apple TV is easier than ever to use with its new icon-based interface and the ability to access your purchased movies, TV shows and music right from iCloud.”

    Apple TV Launches For $99

Speaking of content, the programming available over Apple TV is pretty impressive. There will be over 15,000 movies and over 90,000 TV episodes available on the iTunes Store. On top of all that, there is Netflix, live sports from MLB, NBA and NHL alongside content from Vimeo, YouTube and Flickr.

The iCloud support will go beyond Apple TV by letting users who buy content stream it on all of their compatible devices. iCloud can also be used to store photos and share between all of your devices.

AirPlay will also be used to push content from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to Apple TV. It can also be used to mirror images between the device and Apple TV to stream Web pages, spreadsheets and games.

The most amazing news out of all this is the price. Apple TV will only cost $99 and be available Friday, March 16. You can buy it at the Apple online store, any of their retail stores or any authorized Apple reseller.

If you’re interested in getting the Apple TV, you will need a couple of things first. Interested users will need iTunes 10.5 or later, either a wireless or Ethernet network, broadband internet connection and an HDTV capable of 1080p or 720p. It goes without saying that an HDMI cable is required.

Those who own second generation Apple TV devices will be able to download a firmware update that adds the new UI. Unfortunately, the new Apple TV is required to play 1080p content.

  • New iPad Gets AppleCare+, Covers Two Years Accidental Damage

New iPad Gets AppleCare+, Covers Two Years Accidental Damage

Earlier, we reported that the iPad 3 was likely to get the AppleCare+ warranty plan that is already available for the iPhone 4S. Now, after Apple’s big media event, we know that it’s not called the iPad 3 and that yes, you can crack your iPad on the sidewalk and you’re covered.

AppleCare+ debuted with the iPhone 4S, and it is “coming soon” to the brand new tablet. If you purchase nothing extra, your new iPad will come with the standard 1-year warranty. But with Applecare+…

Every iPad comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPad extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPad and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee. Whether you use your iPad with a Mac or a PC, just one phone call can help resolve most issues.

So dependent on how bad you mess up your new iPad when you drop it in the can, you may or may not have to pay $49 bucks to have it fixed or replaced. Hey, it’s much better than $499 and up for a new one.

In order to get all the benefits of AppleCare+, you have to buy it within 30 days of purchasing your new iPad. If you don’t do it when you buy the device, you can go in to an Apple retail store and add it on there.

No official word on the price, but it’s expected to mirror the price of AppleCare+ on the 4S, which is $99.

  • The New iPad Is Not The HD Or The 3

The New iPad Is Not The HD Or The 3

Today, at a media event in San Francisco, Apple unveiled their next-gen iPad to the world. The iPad sports many of the rumored features like a high-def Retina display, new cameras, and an A5X quad-core processor. It even surprised some by launching with 4G LTE functionality.

And like we speculated earlier this week, it will hit the shelves on March 16th. Pre-orders, however, begin today.

Like the iPad 2, the new iPad is going to start at $499. That will be the price for the 16 GB non-4G model. Here’s the full pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

“We have redefined once again the category that Apple created just two years ago with the original iPad,” said Tim Cook. “It’s the privilege of a lifetime for me to work with the most innovative people on Earth. Only Apple can deliver this kind of innovation in such a beautiful, integrated, and easy to use way. It’s what we love to do, it’s what we stand for.”

So Tim Cook said a lot about the new iPad today. One thing he didn’t say was anything about an iPad 3 or an iPad HD. After everyone referred to the device as the iPad 3 for a while, reports emerged that it was going to be called the iPad HD. Fooled us, Apple!

The next gen iPad is called the iPad. But it’s the new iPad.

  • Apple iPad Event: Infinity Blade Dungeons, Other Games Announced

During the Apple iPad event, the company took some time out to go over their dedication to gaming on the platform. They said that when iPad users claimed to spend more time gaming on the iPad over their consoles or handheld platforms.

To show their dedication to the platform, three game/app announcements were made today that should stoke the fires of the casual and hardcore gamer.

First up was Namco, they showed off a aerial combat game that might as well be a new Ace Combat game. They said it had console quality visuals with the new retina display helping out a lot.

    Apple iPad Event Games

The second app shown off wasn’t really a game, but more of a drawing tool. Autodesk showed off Sketchbook for the iPad that promises resolution independent image manipulation and drawing.

    Apple iPad Event Games

Up next was Epic Games who announced the third game in the popular Infinity Blade franchise – Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Epic said that it will feature HDR graphics with great lighting. To keep the “new iPad is better than everything else” rhetoric going, Epic said that the new iPad has more memory and screen resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PS3.

  • Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple CEO Tim Cook began today’s event by talking about a “Post PC” world. Apple has its stake in three of these types of devices – the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod. And those post PC devices make up for 76% of Apple’s revenue, as they sold 62 million of them last quarter.

Last quarter, Apple sold 15.4 million iPads alone, which is more than any PC company sold of their PCs (more proof of that post PC world Cook’s been hammering). Cook went on to talk about how the iPad has become everyone’s favorite device for books, email, and even gaming.

And now comes the new iPad. It will hit the shelves on March 16th, and pre-orders start today.

First off, it is sporting that high-def retina display that we thought it would: 2048 x 1536 resolution. “Text sharper than a newspaper. Photos will look incredible. Fonts look amazing, it’s a huge step forward. Put another way, you all have an HDTV at home , 1080p — an iPad has more pixels. That’s incredible,” said Cook.

As far as the processor goes, Apple went with the A5X chip. What’s the “x?” Quad-core, baby. So Apple has built a high-def retina display with a chip with twice the graphic power of what’s in the iPhone 4S.

The new iPad also sports new cameras – the rear being called the “iSight.” It’s 5 megapixels and has autofocus, autoexposure, as well as face detection. And it supports HD video recording at 1080p resolution with built-in video stabilization.

One of the biggest things about the new iPad is that it’s got 4G LTE. There was a lot of speculation prior to today on whether Apple would launch the new iPad with this capability, and they have (to the joy of heavy data users everywhere). The LTE networks can accomodate 72Mbps. Apple claims that your battery life won’t be be negatively affected by all this – keeping 9 hours on 4G. It’s a little thicker than the iPad 2, as was expected (9.4 mm to 8.6 mm).

    Here’s the pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

  • Apple iPad Event: New iPad Getting 4G LTE

Apple iPad Event: New iPad Getting 4G LTE

It was going back and forth there for a while, but it’s now officially confirmed that the new iPad (iPad 3 or iPad HD, just tell us already!) will have 4G LTE support.

Apple said the the speeds of the iPad 2 were at 3.1 Mbps on EV-DO and 7.2 on HSPA. For the new iPad, it’s 21 Mbps on HSPA+, 42 Mbps on DC-HSDPA and LTE at a whopping 73 Mbps.

4G on the new iPad is available through AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. It will be available through Telus, Rogers and Bell in Canada.

The features of the new iPad just keeps getting better and better. Stay tuned to our liveblog for more updates.
