  • Nexus Tablet: In the News This Holiday Season

Google seems to be constantly making the news with its Nexus tablet.

The most recent rumblings involve the Nexus 10 2, the newest version of its 10-inch tablet. Rumor has it that the Nexus 10 2 may launch ahead of CES 2014.

CES is an annual international consumer electronics and technology trade show, the self-described “global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace.” This year’s event takes place January 7-10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But the technology world is abuzz with rumors that the Nexus 10 2 may actually hit the market after New Year’s Eve.

Earlier this month, Google made the news when it unveiled a white version of its 7-inch Nexus tablet:

Google is marketing the Nexus as a perfect holiday gift, putting the tablet up against what are possibly its two biggest competitors: Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX and Apple’s new iPad Mini with Retina display.

The verdict is out on which mini tablet tops the list.

Some sources put the iPad Mini with Retina display last while others refer to it as the gold standard of mini tablets.

Technology authority C-NET calls the iPad Mini with Retina Display “the best small tablet yet.”

It calls the Nexus 7, however, “the best tablet value on the market” and the “best Android tablet.”

Another industry authority is PC Magazine. In a comparison of the 10 best tablets, it gives the Nexus 7 an “Editor’s Choice” distinction.

Google has been ratcheting up attention for the Nexus 7 on its own social networking site, Google+. It recently ran a giveaway encouraging users to compose still photos including their Nexus tablet and post them using the hashtag #whatmatters:

  • iPad Mini With Retina Display Reportedly Available For Walk-In Purchases At Some Stores

Some consumers looking to buy Apple’s iPad mini with Retina Display may now be able to do so in their local Apple Retail stores. I stress the word “may”.

On November 12th, Apple announced the availability of the device, but only by way of order and personal pick-up due to limited supplies.

GottaBeMobile and others are reporting that the company is selling them to walk in customers in some stores, though supplies are still limited. So if you’re planning on making a trip to the store, don’t get your hopes up too high. You might want to call ahead.

Obviously we have a major shopping week ahead, so I wouldn’t expect supplies for walk-in customers to last very long.

The iPad mini with Retina Display was unveiled last month at a big press event along with the new iPad Air, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro models.

The device comes in silver or “space gray”. The Wi-Fi model costs $399 for 16GB, $499 for 32GB, $599 for the 64GB model and $699 for the 128GB. The Wi-Fi + Cellular model is $529 for the 16GB, $629 for the 32GB, $729 for 64GB and $829 for the 128GB.

The original iPad mini has been dropped to $299 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and $429 for the 16GB Wi-Fi + Cellular.

  • New iPad Mini With Retina Display Due This Month

Apple still hasn’t confirmed an actual date for the release of its new iPad Mini with Retina Display, just saying that the tablet will be available sometime later this month. Oddly enough, Apple did not release a new iPad in March of this year, the month it usually adds a new tablet to its stock. The latest iPad Air was put on shelves in California last week, and now, the new Mini will be joining it in the same month.

Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook displayed the latest addition to its iPad line last month in San Francisco – the new Mini tablet will boast a Retina Display that has a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536. This barely even compares to the original Mini’s, which was 1,024 x 768.

The new iPad Mini is also about 40% smaller than the latest iPad Air, and costs about $100 less; the two do have the same storage sizes, processor, screen resolution, and battery life. The Mini’s screen size will be 7.9 inches, and a a 5MP rear-facing, HD camera.

The bad news? With a month still left before the device is even released, demand is already expected to largely outweigh supply. Rhoda Alexander, director of tablet research at analytics firm IHS, says that more than 9 million consumers are projected to purchase the new Mini. However, shipment of the product is expected to fall below 4 million units before the release, with a tentative 1 million more disappearing.

Just like last year, Apple users expecting to give the new Mini as a Christmas gift may have a difficult time nabbing the tablet, and should plan for an extended waiting period, possibly, into next year.
