Track New IPad Sales in Real Time

So, I’ve heard this new iPad thing isn’t generating much hype. You really think anyone is going to buy it?

That was sarcasm. The new iPad has been touted as the greatest consumer tech product of the year by bloggers, Twitter tweeters and Apple fanciers since January. They are travelling in droves to pick up the HD iPad.

Initial reviews have been favorable, but lets face it, if you are going to get up extra early on a weekday to spend $500 dollars on a tech gadget, you would probably already have assumptions about how awesome it is too.

But how well is it actually doing. We need some real numbers here.

If you are curious how the iPad is selling on the market right now, you need look no further than ad-network Chitika, who has created a new iPad tracker. The app is using tracking of websites that display their advertising to determine how many are viewed from a New iPad.

“But,” you say, “what if people aren’t going to websites with Chiticka advertising? What if they aren’t using the web at all? What if my head explodes trying contemplate all the possible things that can go wrong with this kind of tracking system?”

I agree, there are many holes in this methodology, but right now, until Apple gives us some hard numbers, it’s all we’ve got.

This is what Chitika’s stats look like. They are currently comparing the percentage of new iPads vs. iPad 1 and 2.

“What if I want to know the total number of New iPads being sold, compared to the number of iPads that are already out there?”

I don’t know, deal with it.

The percentage reported in the pie chart represents the most recent recorded hour of iPad traffic. The percentages are simply the count of each particular group (iPad 1&2, “The new iPad”) divided by a total count of all iPad traffic observed.

The line chart highlights adoption rate by hour. For each hour, the methodology is the same as in the pie chart, except shown in a time series. For example, if “The new iPad” impressions made up 5% of all iPad impressions on March 17th at midnight, and 6% at March 18th at midnight, the chart would highlight this growth (and show all of the hours in between).

Note: These figures are from a screen cap. They are continually changing as more iPads are being sold and used. Check Chitika’s website for current data.

  • New iPad May Mean The End of Numbered Apple Devices

At yesterday’s media event Apple unveiled their third generation iPad with several new (though mostly expected) features: retina display, better camera, and 4G LTE, and iOS 5.1. One new feature of the iPad surprised pretty much everyone, though: the name. After months of speculation about the “iPad 3,” reports started to surface that the tablet would actually be called the iPad HD.

As it turned out, everybody was wrong. The new iPad’s name does away with all the modifiers. It’s just “the new iPad.” This has left a lot of industry watchers scratching their heads. In a way, though, it makes sense. Most companies – including most of Apple’s with their other products – don’t bother with giving each new iteration of a device its own unique name. What generation is the current iPod Nano? Or, for that matter, what about the red-headed step child of the iOS family, the iPod Touch? What about the latest MacBook? The iMac?

For the most part, new devices aren’t given their own names, and for the most part consumers don’t care. Sure it makes things easier for retailers, accessory makers, and industry watchers. But for consumers it really doesn’t make much real difference. Most consumers – especially the less tech savvy ones – who walk into a store looking for the latest iPad aren’t going to ask for the iPad 2 or the iPad HD. They’re going to ask for “the new iPad.” In that sense, then, Apple’s naming choice makes sense. It brings the iPad into line with most of the rest of Apple’s products, and it recognizes the way that most of Apple’s customers shop.

Of course, Apple’s choice for the iPad’s name raises some interesting questions about other Apple products. What about next year’s iPad? Will it be the “New New iPad“? More importantly, what does that mean for the next iPhone? Most speculation has been calling it the iPhone 5. Some have suggested the iPhone 6 (it is, after all, the sixth generation iPhone). But if Apple is dropping modifiers from device names, then it’s a pretty safe bet that when Tim Cook next takes the stage (in September or October?) it will be to announce “the new iPhone.”

What do you think of “the new iPad”? Is it a smart move on Apple’s part, or a mistake? Let us know in the comments.

  • iTunes Updated To 10.6 Following Apple TV, iPad Announcement

In a move that should surprise no one, Apple has released a new version of iTunes in the wake of this afternoon’s unveiling of the new iPad and the new Apple TV. iTunes 10.6 now supports 1080p video from the iTunes Store. It also includes a few security tweaks, some performance updates for iCloud, improved performance for iTunes Match, and improvements to the way iTunes downloads and displays album artwork.

As always, iTunes 10.6 is available as a free download from Apple’s website. Mac users can also get the update by running Software Update. The new iPad and the new Apple TV are both available for pre-order from the Apple Store. You can pre-order now for delivery on March 16th (which is also when they are available in stores). The Apple TV is $99, and the new iPad starts at $499.

  • Apple Unveils “Resolutionary” Retina Display iPad

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage in San Francisco today for his second major product launch since taking the reins of Apple from Steve Jobs last year. The new iPad (not the iPad 3 or iPad HD, just the new iPad).

While not exactly revolutionary, the new iPad does sport some pretty cool new features. Foremost among these is the long-awaited retina display. People have been predicting a retina display iPad since Apple introduced the technology in 2010 with the iPhone 4. With the new iPad, we finally have it.

    New iPad Retina Display

The new iPad’s 2048×1536 display has squeezes a staggering 3.1 million pixels into a 9.7-inch display (which is the same size as the iPad 2). For reference, a 27-inch iMac display is 2560×1440, and your average HDTV is 1920×1080.

    Better than an HDTV

The new iPad’s retina display is great news for those who want to edit photos on the go. With iPhoto for iPad, the new iPad’s retina display can handle images up to 19 megapixels and provide users an impressive array of options for tweaking their photos.

    iPhoto for iPad

Gaming gets a major boost with the new iPad’s retina display, as well. The A5X processor is designed to handle graphics quickly and smoothly. Games like Sky Gamblers and Infinity Blade: Dungeon, which were shown off at the event, will deliver retina display graphics almost immediately. Other game makers will undoubtedly follow suit soon.

  • iLife Apps Get Major Updates for iOS

Today, along with the announcement for the new iPad release, Apple introduced iPhoto for iPad and iPhone, and major updates to iMovie and GarageBand, completing its suite of iLife apps for iOS.

The new iPhoto includes Multi-Touch features so you can use simple gestures to sort through photos and find your best shots, enhance and retouch your images using fingertip brushes and share photo journals with iCloud. iMovie now gives you the ability to create Hollywood-style trailers as you record HD video on your iPad and iPhone. GarageBand introduces Jam Session, a feature that allows a group of friends to wirelessly connect their iOS devices to play instruments and record live music together. Each app takes advantage of the new iPad Retina display.

The new iPad also features a 5 megapixel iSight camera so you can record, edit and watch 1080p HD video.

“With the introduction of iPhoto, we’ve brought the entire suite of iLife apps to iOS and users are going to love it,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Whether brushing an effect onto a photo, shooting a movie trailer or jamming with friends to record a song, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand let you make amazing creations on iPad and iPhone.”

    iPhoto
Apple’s photography app, iPhoto, has been revamped for iOS to take advantage of the Retina display and Multi-Touch gestures on iPad and iPhone. Simple gestures can be used to select and compare photos side by side and flag your best shots. The new iPhoto features more control over color, exposure and contrast. You can enhance pictures by adding effects, or apply adjustments with your fingertip. You can post to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter within the app, or share photos between your iPhone and iPad, stream slideshows to your Apple TV with AirPlay, and use iCloud to publish photo journals to the web.

    iMovie
iMovie now allows you to turn the HD video on your iPad and iPhone into Hollywood-style trailers. The theater view lets you preview and choose from nine templates in genres including Fairy Tale, Superhero and Romance. Trailers feature customizable graphics with soundtracks written by Hanz Zimmer and the London Symphony Orchestra. You can also share your movie trailers to YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook, and use AirPlay to stream them to Apple TV in high definition resolutions up to 1080p.

    GarageBand
With the new Jam Session feature in GarageBand, you can invite up to three friends to wirelessly connect your iOS devices to play and record as a group. Jam Session synchronizes the tempo, key and chords of your touch instruments. After jamming, everyone’s tracks are collected on your iOS device to edit and mix. GarageBand also introduces Smart Strings, a touch instrument that allows you to play a string orchestra with just one finger, and the new Note Editor allows you to fine tune a recording instead of replaying it from scratch. GarageBand offers full integration with iCloud and other iOS devices, and you can share your songs directly to Facebook, YouTube and SoundCloud.

  • The New iPad Is Not The HD Or The 3

The New iPad Is Not The HD Or The 3

Today, at a media event in San Francisco, Apple unveiled their next-gen iPad to the world. The iPad sports many of the rumored features like a high-def Retina display, new cameras, and an A5X quad-core processor. It even surprised some by launching with 4G LTE functionality.

And like we speculated earlier this week, it will hit the shelves on March 16th. Pre-orders, however, begin today.

Like the iPad 2, the new iPad is going to start at $499. That will be the price for the 16 GB non-4G model. Here’s the full pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

“We have redefined once again the category that Apple created just two years ago with the original iPad,” said Tim Cook. “It’s the privilege of a lifetime for me to work with the most innovative people on Earth. Only Apple can deliver this kind of innovation in such a beautiful, integrated, and easy to use way. It’s what we love to do, it’s what we stand for.”

So Tim Cook said a lot about the new iPad today. One thing he didn’t say was anything about an iPad 3 or an iPad HD. After everyone referred to the device as the iPad 3 for a while, reports emerged that it was going to be called the iPad HD. Fooled us, Apple!

The next gen iPad is called the iPad. But it’s the new iPad.

This sort of reaction shouldn’t surprise you:

  • New iPad: Twitter Reactions To Apple’s Announcement

New iPad: Twitter Reactions To Apple’s Announcement

In the absence of a live-stream feed of Apple’s big announcement today, many people resorted to sites live-blogging the event or Tweeting reactions and updates. In fact, shortly after Tim Cook said that the iPad is the “poster child of the post-PC world,” the term “post-PC” instantly became one of the top trending topics on Twitter.

More, as the presentation led into the new iPad, “Apple TV,” “keynote,” “iOS 5.1,” “Post-PC,” “Retina Display” (probably the first and last time that phrase will trend), “A5X,” “Voice Dictation,” “No Siri,” “Infinity Blade,” “Epic Games,” “Xbox 360 or the PS3,” “#iPad3,” “iPhoto,” “iMovie,” and “Tim Cook” all were phrases used at the conferences and all became top trending topics worldwide on Twitter. With how every single feature became a new trending topic on Twitter, Tim Cook or Mike Capps could probably have repeated “pancake meth cars” and it’d be a trending topic.

What’s more intriguing is how you can almost watch the color of the public’s mood ring change by the end of the announcement. In the beginning, the live-tweets coming from the event were much more excited than the end, where the tweets took on an impatient and sardonic tone. The general consensus also seemed to reflect frustration for the fact that Apple dragged out the presentation without actually sharing the name of the new tablet.

  • Apple iPad Event: Infinity Blade Dungeons, Other Games Announced

During the Apple iPad event, the company took some time out to go over their dedication to gaming on the platform. They said that when iPad users claimed to spend more time gaming on the iPad over their consoles or handheld platforms.

To show their dedication to the platform, three game/app announcements were made today that should stoke the fires of the casual and hardcore gamer.

First up was Namco, they showed off a aerial combat game that might as well be a new Ace Combat game. They said it had console quality visuals with the new retina display helping out a lot.

    Apple iPad Event Games

The second app shown off wasn’t really a game, but more of a drawing tool. Autodesk showed off Sketchbook for the iPad that promises resolution independent image manipulation and drawing.

Up next was Epic Games who announced the third game in the popular Infinity Blade franchise – Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Epic said that it will feature HDR graphics with great lighting. To keep the “new iPad is better than everything else” rhetoric going, Epic said that the new iPad has more memory and screen resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PS3.

  • Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple Launches New iPad: 4G, Retina Display, A5X Chip and Available March 16th

Apple CEO Tim Cook began today’s event by talking about a “Post PC” world. Apple has its stake in three of these types of devices – the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod. And those post PC devices make up for 76% of Apple’s revenue, as they sold 62 million of them last quarter.

Last quarter, Apple sold 15.4 million iPads alone, which is more than any PC company sold of their PCs (more proof of that post PC world Cook’s been hammering). Cook went on to talk about how the iPad has become everyone’s favorite device for books, email, and even gaming.

And now comes the new iPad. It will hit the shelves on March 16th, and pre-orders start today.

First off, it is sporting that high-def retina display that we thought it would: 2048 x 1536 resolution. “Text sharper than a newspaper. Photos will look incredible. Fonts look amazing, it’s a huge step forward. Put another way, you all have an HDTV at home , 1080p — an iPad has more pixels. That’s incredible,” said Cook.

As far as the processor goes, Apple went with the A5X chip. What’s the “x?” Quad-core, baby. So Apple has built a high-def retina display with a chip with twice the graphic power of what’s in the iPhone 4S.

The new iPad also sports new cameras – the rear being called the “iSight.” It’s 5 megapixels and has autofocus, autoexposure, as well as face detection. And it supports HD video recording at 1080p resolution with built-in video stabilization.

One of the biggest things about the new iPad is that it’s got 4G LTE. There was a lot of speculation prior to today on whether Apple would launch the new iPad with this capability, and they have (to the joy of heavy data users everywhere). The LTE networks can accomodate 72Mbps. Apple claims that your battery life won’t be be negatively affected by all this – keeping 9 hours on 4G. It’s a little thicker than the iPad 2, as was expected (9.4 mm to 8.6 mm).

    Here’s the pricing structure: $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB, respectively. If you want 4G, it’ll cost you $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

  • Apple iPad Event: New iPad Getting 4G LTE

Apple iPad Event: New iPad Getting 4G LTE

It was going back and forth there for a while, but it’s now officially confirmed that the new iPad (iPad 3 or iPad HD, just tell us already!) will have 4G LTE support.

Apple said the the speeds of the iPad 2 were at 3.1 Mbps on EV-DO and 7.2 on HSPA. For the new iPad, it’s 21 Mbps on HSPA+, 42 Mbps on DC-HSDPA and LTE at a whopping 73 Mbps.

4G on the new iPad is available through AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. It will be available through Telus, Rogers and Bell in Canada.

The features of the new iPad just keeps getting better and better. Stay tuned to our liveblog for more updates.

  • iPad HD: 4G LTE Support Confirmed?

The question of whether the forthcoming iPad HD will have 4G LTE connectivity has been giving the rumor mill fits for weeks. One report said that it would, while another argued that the lack of 4G was why the price wouldn’t go up. Yesterday a third report said that yes, the iPad HD would have 4G.

Now, though, on the eve of the launch event (which is just over an hour away), the Wall Street Journal has apparently confirmed that the iPad HD will include 4G LTE connectivity. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” WSJ says that the iPad will have LTE capability, and that its inclusion should be much better news for Verizon than for rival carrier AT&T. While AT&T does have a 4G network, it is far newer and far smaller than Verizon’s.

Speaking of Verizon, they may actually have dropped a hint about the 4G iPad themselves. Yesterday we reported that they had posted a teaser on their website saying that “Something Is Coming.” While yesterday’s teaser was pretty bland, today they’ve given it a makeover. Check it out below:

    Verizon Reigns Supreme?

Of course, if Apple is preparing to release a 4G iPad, then you can bet we’ll be seeing a 4G iPhone, as well. Some expected to see 4G capability in the iPhone 4. When that didn’t happen, many expected to see it in the iPhone 4S. Though Apple will undoubtedly remain tight-lipped about what’s coming with the next iPhone, it’s inconceivable that they would release a 4G iPad now and leave it out of the iPhone later this year.

What do you think? Will 4G make you more likely to buy an iPad HD? Sound off in the comments.

  • iPad HD: US Apple Store Goes Down Ahead Of Launch

With the launch event for the iPad HD less than two hours away, the online Apple Store is down for U.S. customers. While the store occasionally goes down and then up again, sometimes with no change or only minor changes, the reason this time is pretty clear: they’re preparing for the launch of the iPad.

While there’s been a lot of speculation as to when the iPad HD will be available, this Apple Store outage may provide a clue. Recent reports have said that Apple has already been bringing large quantities of the iPad over from China, where it’s manufactured. The fact that the Apple Store is down before the event even starts, coupled with the fact that Apple already has massive amounts of iPad HDs already sitting on U.S. soil suggests that the iPad HD will be available very soon after today’s launch event.

Apple has been consistently releasing its iOS devices closer and closer to their announcement date – the iPhone 4S was in stores two weeks after the announcement. If the Apple Store is down now, the iPad HD may be available for pre-order as soon as today, and could be in stores very quickly after that. One recent report has suggested that it would hit stores in nine days, on March 16th.

While we won’t know anything for certain until Tim Cook tells us from stage in San Francisco, it’s looking pretty likely that the iPad HD could be in users’ hands very quickly indeed.

Will you preorder an iPad HD? Will you stand in line for one? Let us know in the comments.

  • New, Cheaper iPad 2 to Launch With iPad 3?

The latest leaks anticipate a newer, slimmer, cheaper version of the iPad 2 will launch today along with the much anticipated iPad 3, aka iPad HD. Digitimes is reporting the cheaper iPad will rival other budget tablet models like the Kindle Fire and the upcoming Windows 8 tablets.

The site is reporting that the new tablet will include a 8GB hard drive, though it does not make claims as to how cheap it will be. Current iPads start around $500 dollars; the new iPad 3 is anticipated to keep this price point.

As of January, Apple has sold an estimated 55 million iPads. They are planning to keep this trend alive and bring in new buyers with today’s releases. 78% of the new iPad sales are anticipated to be from first time buyers. Some people are even anticipating the market to take over laptops and ultrabooks, as touch-screen tablets continue to rise in popularity.

If rumors of the cheaper iPad 2 turn out to false, you can always purchase a used one on ebay or Craigslist. Insiders are anticipating up to 75% of current iPad owners plan to upgrade. That equates to a lot of previously owned iPads hitting the market at once. Current iPad 2 resale prices are around $325 on ebay.

  • iPad 3 Will Help Apple Dominate Tablet Market

With the launch of the iPad 3, Apple will be set to take over 70% of the tablet market in 2012, according to IMS Research. IMS predicts that Apple will sell about 70 million iPads in 2012.

    tablet market

The increase in sales would further distance Apple from the rest of the Android tablet competition, with Android tablet makers being forced into a low-cost, low-profit realm of the market, to compete against each other, rather than even going near Apple.

Gary Xu, PC market Analyst at IMS Research states that “there is a large customer base loyal to Apple products that have been waiting for the latest tablet,” said Gerry Xu, PC Market Analyst at IMS Research. “Many owners of the iPad 1 are also expected to upgrade to the latest release. In addition to this consumer demand, growth is also forecast as a result of sales into enterprise and education.” Xu also contends that Amazon’s Kindle Fire poses no threat to the iPad 3, and predicts that Android tablets will lose roughly 9% of the market share in 2012, regardless Android global shipments being up 10% in 2011.

Apple’s strategy of dominating the user experience worked well when it came to the media player and smartphone markets, and looks to repeat itself in the tablet market. The iPad 3 is set to launch today at 1 PM EST.

  • AT&T Puts Up Their Own iPad 3 Teaser

AT&T Puts Up Their Own iPad 3 Teaser

Yesterday we told you that Verizon had put a teaser for the iPad 3 (iPad HD) on their website. Now it looks like AT&T is following suit.

The banner on AT&T’s website this morning promises “an exciting new addition to our line-up” coming soon. It also includes a box where you can put in your email address so that you can “be the first to know about the news.”

Of course, AT&T’s site doesn’t actually say that their new addition is the iPad 3, but unless there are any other companies planning major events to unveil highly anticipated products today, it’s a safe bet that they’re talking about the iPad 3.

Now, if you don’t want to give AT&T your email address, you can stick around right here for all our iPad coverage, including coverage of Apple’s launch event when it happens, today at 10 AM Pacific time, 1 PM Eastern.
