  • iOS 6 Kills Latest Absinthe Jailbreak

Well, if you didn’t know it was coming, you should have: it’s been confirmed that the current beta of iOS 6 eliminates the exploits used by pod2g and the rest of the Dev Team to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1. In other words, if you were hoping for a quick jailbreak of iOS 6, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

MuscleNerd, a member of the Dev Team, tweeted earlier this morning that he had managed to get iOS 6 on his A4 iPod Touch jailbroken, but there were numerous problems, including with Cydia:

That means that despite the advance work the Dev Team has already done to get ready for iOS 6, we’re probably in for another long wait before there’s a public jailbreak tool available for iOS 6.

It’s worth point out again, though, that this isn’t particularly surprising. As soon as the Dev Team makes a jailbreak public, you can bet that Apple’s own devs are first in line for the download. Once they get it, they pick it apart to see how it works, then they begin changing iOS to compensate. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse that’s been going on for years. The fact that Apple is legally required to tolerate jailbreaking (which the FTC treats as an exception to the DMCA, despite Apple’s best efforts), doesn’t mean that they have to like it, nor that they can’t make the Dev Team’s life as hard as possible.

Of course, some of iOS 6’s new features may mean that some people won’t be as interested in jailbreaking iOS 6. After all, Apple has added many much-requested features this time around, several of which became popular first in Cydia. Those who do want to jailbreak iOS 6, though, should settle in for a long wait.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak “A Matter Of Days” Away

It seems there was quite a bit of jailbreak-related news over the weekend. First and foremost, it looks like pod2g’s jailbreak of iOS 5.1.1 is nearly ready for public release. Second, it looks like the public tool that will be released is going to be named Absinthe 2 (the tool that was released for jailbreaking iOS 5.0 back in January was called Absinthe).

The Absinthe news isn’t especially surprising. What’s really exciting is the fact that, according to pod2g, the public jailbreak of iOS 5.1.1 is “a matter of days” away. Yesterday he posted the following tweet:

Thanks to awesome work of @planetbeing and @pimskeks, we’re near ready for a release. Now it’s a matter of days.

Since then, more information has been coming fast and furious. Yesterday iPhone hacker xvolks, who is a good friend of pod2g, tweeted that he had tested Absinthe 2.0 on his iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1. He even posted a video of the tool in action, though pod2g asked him to remove it:

I’ve tested Absinthe v2 on my iPhone 4 GSM, iOS 5.1.1. It jailbroke it flawlessly.I’ve took a (bad) video of it 😉

Today, some more information is being released for those who plan to jailbreak their devices. Last week pod2g posted a list of tested devices for the jailbreak. Today Musclenerd has tweeted an info sheet with some basic details about the upcoming release:

Pod2g posted the same info sheet to his blog, and advised that those who wished to do so could go ahead and update their devices to iOS 5.1.1:

Now, updating to iOS 5.1.1 will kill the jailbreak on an already-jailbroken device, so if you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone or iPad (or iPod Touch) you might not want to click the update button until Absinthe 2.0 actually releases. Fortunately, though, it’s looking like that’s going to be very soon indeed. We’ll let you know when it actually releases, or if any new information about when it will release becomes available. You can keep track of our jailbreak-related coverage here.

  • Apple Stops Censoring “Jailbreak” From iTunes And The App Store

Yesterday we brought you news that Apple had suddenly begun censoring the word “jailbreak” in its various stores. Visitors to the App Store or the iTunes Store who searched for “jailbreak” saw it replaced with “j*******k.” That, as you may know, is the kind of treatment Apple usually reserves for the kinds of words you don’t want your kids saying (one of my favorite examples is the song “Kiss Me, I’m Sh*tfaced,” by Dropkick Murphys).

Thanks to a 2010 ruling by the U.S. Copyright Office that jailbreaking doesn’t violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Apple is legally required to tolerate the practice. That does not, of course, mean that they have to like it. In fact, most major updates to the iOS platform close the weaknesses used to create a new jailbreak. This, however, marks the first time that Apple has ever actually taken any sort of action against the word “jailbreak,” and most agreed that it was a pretty silly move.

Apparently somebody at Apple agreed, because “jailbreak” is once again off the naughty words list, because it’s no longer getting the asterisk treatment. Fans of Thin Lizzy will, I’m sure, be glad to know that their band’s album title is once again intact:

    Jailbreak Censorship

Apple has kept quiet on why, exactly, the word was censored in the first place. Given the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing, my money is on it being some sort of mistake, or a gag by somebody at Apple that accidentally made it out into the wild.

  • Apple Censors “Jailbreak,” Thin Lizzy Album Now An Obscenity

Do you know how much Apple hates jailbreaking? Apparently, it’s enough to label the mere mention of it as an obscenity, worthy of the full “**********” treatment. That’s right, searches within iTunes for anything relating to “jailbreak” now shows “j*******k” instead. Somehow, that just makes it sound so much dirtier, Apple.

What makes this super funny is Apple’s apparent lack of discrimination when it comes to censoring the world-that-must-not-be-spoken.

As fans of one particular Irish rock band might have already surmised, collateral damage includes Thin Lizzy and their sixth studio album “Jailbreak.” Here you go:

The odd bit of censorship was first discussed on Twitter. Not only has Thin Lizzy been demonized, but “j*******k” is appearing within iBooks as well.

Apparently, this is only a U.S. issue, as Shoutpedia confirms that the word “jailbreak” is alive and well in other countries’ iTunes stores.

For Apple, the animosity toward the word “jailbreak” is unsurprising – but this seems like a bit much, don’t you think? As far as the iOS 5.1 jailbreak (sorry, j*******k) goes, it’s reportedly “weeks away,” but getting closer.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak “Weeks Away,” But Getting Closer

Yesterday we brought you news that iOS hacker pod2g had gotten an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 working on his third generation iPad. In his tweet yesterday, he said that after a little more work, he would test it on the recently released iOS 5.1.1 to make sure that the same exploits would work.

Today, it seems that that test was successful, and that pod2g’s jailbreak works equally well on iOS 5.1.1. Here’s his tweet from earlier this morning:

OK, tested on an iPad 3,1 running 5.1.1. Jailbroken untethered. 🙂 No issue. 1 hour ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

So, that’s one major question from yesterday answered: the iOS 5.1 jailbreak works on iOS 5.1.1, meaning that when the public tool is released, jailbreakers will be able to update their version of iOS to the latest version, rather than trying to jump through hoops to upgrade only to iOS 5.1. The second major question following yesterday’s announcement, though, is when the jailbreak will be ready for public use. It turns out that there’s still a bit of waiting left to do for that. Pod2g tweeted yesterday that a “nice, user friendly” jailbreak tool is still “some weeks away,” and that he would not be releasing a beta version of the tool earlier than that:

ETA for 5.1 jailbreak: look at my previous tweets. Some weeks away to have a nice, user friendly tool. No beta, sorry, even for $1,000,000. 9 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

So there you have it. iOS 5.1.1 has been jailbroken, and a public jailbreak tool is coming, you just have to hang on a few more weeks. Unfortunately, however, a hacker’s work is never done. With WWDC 2012 just a month away, there’s a fair chance we’ll be seeing iOS 6 soon.

In the meantime, while we wait for the jailbreak tool for iOS 5.1.1 to be ready, here’s a video pod2g posted of the untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 in action.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Coming Sooner Than Expected?

Just yesterday we brought you news that the latest update to the jailbreak took redsn0w, which should be coming soon, would allow users to roll back to an older version of iOS. This was good news, because it meant that those who had upgraded to iOS 5.1 but wanted to jailbreak their devices could downgrade to a jailbroken iOS, rather than waiting for the jailbreak of iOS 5.1 to be ready.

Now, though, it looks like the need for that new version of redsn0w might not be as pressing as originally thought. Jailbreak developer pod2g tweeted this afternoon that he had an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 running on his new iPad. After a little more work, he plans to test his method on the recently-released iOS 5.1.1. With luck, the exploits used to jailbreak iOS 5.1 will work just as well on the newer version. Check out pod2g’s tweet below:

Hey. iPad 3,1 running iOS 5.1 untethered. Next on the list: stabilizing the payload, then trying 5.1.1. 1 hour ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

This follows another tweet last week wherein pod2g posted that he’d gotten an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 running on his iPhone 4. According to another tweet posted just a few minutes ago, the fact that his jailbreak runs on the iPhone 4 and the new iPad means that it will run on any iOS device. Unfortunately, though, his jailbreak may not work on the third-generation Apple TV

If it works on iPad 3 and iPhone 4, I can say it’ll work on any device. The ATV3 may be out tho… :/ 11 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Now, the fact that pod2g has an working jailbreak doesn’t mean that you should go upgrade your iOS version just yet. For one thing, there’s still the process of confirming that the jailbreak works on iOS 5.1.1. Fortunately, though, there’s a good chance it will, since i0n1c’s unreleased jailbreak did.

Once it’s confirmed that the jailbreak works, there’s still the process of creating a public tool (like redsn0w or Absinthe). In other words, it’s likely to take a little while longer. That means that we still have to be patient. Fortunately, though, it seems that we won’t have to be quite as patient as it looked like we might.

Are you looking forward to upgrading to iOS 5.1? Let us know what you think in the comments.

  • iOS 5.1.1 Jailbroken, But Don’t Update Just Yet

iOS 5.1.1 Jailbroken, But Don’t Update Just Yet

Yesterday we brought you news that Apple had released iOS 5.1.1, a minor update that focused mainly on squashing a few bugs that had been discovered since the release of iOS 5.1 back in March. As usual, those whose iOS devices are jailbroken were warned not to update to the newest version. We are, after all, still waiting on a working jailbreak of iOS 5.1. Even if we weren’t, there’s never a guarantee that the jailbreak that works on an X.1 release will also work on X.1.1.

In a cruel twist of fate, though, it turns out that iOS 5.1.1 has already been jailbroken, but that the wider jailbreak community won’t be able to jailbreak their devices any time soon. Not long at all after Apple pushed out the update yesterday, Stefan Esser (i0n1c) posted the following tweet:

Ohhh no while I was sleeping my girlfriend accidentally upgraded my iPad 3 to iOS 5.1.1 – http://t.co/Dip8t8Eq 20 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The tweet includes a picture of the Cydia store running on his new iPad with iOS 5.1.1 installed:

iPad 3 iOS 5.1.1 Cydia Jailbreak

Now, you may be wondering why I called this a cruel twist of fate. After all, this is a working, untethered jailbreak. It’s what we’ve all been waiting for for two months, right? Well, yes, but the problem is the source. You may recall that shortly the new iPad launched, we ran a story about iOS 5.1 being jailbroken on the iPad 2. Well, the dev who accomplished this wondrous feat back in March was none other than Stefan Esser. Of course, the fact that we’re still waiting for a public jailbreak means that Esser didn’t share what he’d learned with other jailbreak devs. A few weeks later he explained why. In a Twitter conversation last month with another jailbreak dev, pod2g, Esser expressed his opinion that releasing a free-to-the-public jailbreak tool like the one pod2g is working on was a waste, and that having iOS exploits that Apple didn’t know about was a “huge research advantage.”

So there it is: iOS 5.1.1 has, like iOS 5.1 before it, been jailbroken. Unfortunately, the person who did the jailbreaking isn’t inclined to share with the rest of the class. While that’s absolutely his prerogative, one could wish he would refrain from rubbing our noses in it.

On the bright side, if you’re one of the few who is running a tethered jailbreak on an older device – original iPad, iPhone 4 or older – MusclenNerd tweeted yesterday that the redsn0w tool used to establish the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 on those devices would also work for iOS 5.1.1:

On the other hand, tinkerers with older devices can tether jailbreak 5.1.1 using last month’s redsn0w (just pre-select the 5.1 IPSW) 21 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The fact that the tethered jailbreak solution works for iOS 5.1.1 gives some cause to hope that iOS 5.1.1 didn’t close the exploits pod2g is working with. With luck, that means that the release of iOS 5.1.1 won’t delay the jailbreak by much, if at all. Whatever you do, though, don’t ask pod2g when it will be done.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Coming Soon-ish. Maybe.

iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Coming Soon-ish. Maybe.

If you’re a member of the iOS jailbreak community, you know that sometimes a jailbreaking a new version of iOS can take awhile. While Apple is legally required to tolerate jailbreaking – and by “tolerate” I mean “not sue jailbreakers” – they are not obligated to make it easy. In fact, Apple has long been in the habit of making jailbreaking hard. Pretty much every new major release of iOS closes the exploits that allowed the previous version to be jailbroken. Such is the case with iOS 5.1. Apple not only fixed the exploits that were used to jailbreak iOS 5 (which took months to crack), they even acknowledged the Dev Team in the security release notes for iOS 5.1

So it’s no surprise, then, that iOS 5.1 is taking awhile to crack. Unfortunately, though, some early successes gave many jailbreakers the idea that an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak was right around the corner. Despite assertions from pod2g, chpwn, and other jailbreak devs that the jailbreak would be coming later rather than sooner, people are still clamoring for it.

Now it seems that pod2g is getting a bit impatient with repeated questions about when the jailbreak of iOS 5.1 will be ready for the public. He took to Twitter today to explain that there was still a lot of work to be done, and that those doing the work were doing it as a hobby, and have lives and jobs that also demand their attention. Check out what he had to say below:

ETA for 5.1 JB: no clue! We’re going to set pieces of the puzzle together this week. We could have issues… Could be 1 month maybe 2… 14 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Maybe never… (!) 14 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I know 1 month seems long, but it’s short to work on a project like this when it’s a hobby and you’ve other things to do as well. 13 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Now, several reports today have taken these tweets as a timeline. You may have seen something like “iOS Jailbreak Coming In A Month.” I doubt, however that that’s what pod2g is getting at here. While the 1-2 month timeline may be accurate, the point he’s trying to make is that people need to just calm down and be patient. The work is getting done, but this is hardly the only thing he has to do.

So, as impatient as you might be for the next jailbreak to be available, try to give pod2g and the other devs a little space and let them do the work in peace. After all, everybody knows how hard it is to get things done with people constantly asking “You done yet?”

And while you’re at it, try not to think about how little time there will be between the iOS 5.1 jailbreak and the release of iOS 6.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak One Step Closer To Reality

The groundwork for an iOS 5.1 jailbreak has been laid, according to jailbreak developer pod2g. He took to Twitter in the wee hours of this morning to say that all the exploits necessary for a jailbreak of iOS 5.1 had been found. While this was met with excitement by many, jailbreak developer Grant Paul (chpwn) took to Twitter to point out that pod2g’s announcement did not mean that a jailbreak was imminent.

    Here’s pod2g’s announcement:

News: we have all exploits required to do a new jailbreak. I’m working on bypassing ASLR at bootup. 8 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

    And here’s Grant Paul’s response:

Remember: just because all the exploits are found doesn’t mean that a jailbreak exists — it’s likely months away from first working at all. 8 hours ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I’m just reminding you that this is progress, not the final result. Work continues. 🙂 7 hours ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Shortly after the new iPad launched, there was hope that the jailbreak community might not have to wait as long for iOS 5.1 to be jailbroken as we did for iOS 5. The day before the iPad launched, noted iOS hacker Stefan Esser (i0n1c) posted pictures of an iPad 2 running an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1. The next day, just hours after the iPad hit stores, another iOS hacker, MuscleNerd, tweeted screenshots of the new iPad running Cydia. Early hopes were dampened somewhat, though, by an announcement from pod2g saying that a public-ready jailbreak tool was still weeks away.

So, while pod2g’s announcement this morning is progress, there is still a lot of work yet to be done before a jailbreak tool is ready for public release.

But, you may ask, what about i0n1c’s jailbreak? After all, he posted pictures of a jailbroken iOS 5.1 iPad 2. Why can’t the Dev Team just use his method? Well, it turns out that Esser is not a fan of free public jailbreaks, which he says go to line the pockets of those who put ads in Cydia and in jailbreak apps. He also pointed out that makers of forensics software (like the XRY software we told you about a couple weeks ago) make money on the Dev Team’s work.

Here’s Esser’s original tweet, which sparked a lengthy conversation between him and pod2g:

Oh I wake up to good news. @pod2g will waste some more exploits on a public jailbreak for 5.1. 7 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

When asked what he would do with jailbreak exploits if not make them public, Esser said the following:

@pod2g to have a jailbreak that Apple cannot fix because they don’t know about it, is a huge research advantage. 6 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

He did not say in what way, specifically, such exploits would be an advantage. In any event, it’s now clear why he hasn’t been playing ball with the Dev Team and sharing his jailbreak work. Unfortunately, that means that those of us who rely on the Dev Team to do what they can do so we can enjoy the benefits of jailbreaking will probably have several more weeks – if not months – of waiting ahead of us.

What do you think? Is a freely-available public jailbreak a “waste”? Are you getting impatient to jailbreak your iOS 5.1 device, or update your jailbroken device to iOS 5.1? Let us know in the comments.

  • iOS 5.1 Jailbreak April Fool’s Day Prank Angers Some

iOS 5.1 Jailbreak April Fool’s Day Prank Angers Some

An April Fool’s Day gag drew the ire of a number of would-be iOS jailbreakers yesterday. A post on iJailbreak.com proclaimed that a new untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for A5 and A5X iOS devices (iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad) was available. The article offered users a supposed link to download the AprilRa1n jailbreak tool and jailbreak their devices.

Of course, there were plenty of hints that this was a gag. If the name AprilRa1n wasn’t enough of a giveaway, the phrase “april-fools-joke” in the article’s URL should’ve been a clue. Failing that, there’s the disclaimer at the bottom of the article:

    AprilRa1n Disclaimer

Finally, if that wasn’t enough, there’s the download link. Instead of initiating a download of the AprilRa1n tool, the download link goes to the following video:

Some people, however, weren’t quite sharp enough to pick up on the hints, and went ahead and updated their devices to iOS 5.1 anyway. In times past, this wouldn’t be too much of a problem: just roll back to the previous version of iOS, re-jailbreak, and you’re done. It’s a pain in the neck, but not a huge problem. Unfortunately, though, Apple took steps this time around to ensure that the upgrade to iOS 5.1 is a one-way trip. Once you’ve updated, there’s no going back. Which means that those poor souls who updated their devices without reading to the end of the article (or checking the date, or the disclaimer, or the article URL, or clicking the download link) are stuck waiting for the real iOS 5.1 jailbreak. Unfortunately for them, as we reported last week, they may have several weeks to wait.

As you might expect, those who upgraded (and those who want to make fun of them) took to the post’s comments. Here are a few gems.

At least two people went ahead and upgraded to iOS 5.1:

Some got the joke but weren’t amused:

A few decided to play along:

While others point out that the clues were obvious:

  • Jailbreak For iOS 5.1 Still Weeks Away

Jailbreak For iOS 5.1 Still Weeks Away

When Apple unveiled their new iPad on March 7th they also rolled out iOS 5.1. This was great news for most iOS users, but frustrating for those (like me) who prefer their iPhones jailbroken. As expected, iOS 5.1 possessed none of the vulnerabilities that had been used to crack its predecessor, iOS 5. What’s more, iOS 5 proved especially difficult to jailbreak, especially on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of which run on Apple’s A5 processor. Would-be jailbreakers with those devices had to wait just over three months for an untethered jailbreak (i.e., one that doesn’t require the phone to be re-jailbroken every time it’s rebooted).

When iOS 5.1 released, then, there were fears that we would have to wait a similarly long time for an untethered jailbreak. Early signs after the release of the new iPad two weeks ago, though, suggested that the wait might not be quite as long. The day before the new iPad hit stores, noted jailbreak developer i0n1c posted a video and pictures of a jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1. The next day, just hours after the new iPad hit stores, another iPhone hacker, MuscleNerd, posted screenshots from a new iPad running an untethered jailbreak.

All of that looked pretty promising. Such progress so rapidly suggested that maybe an untethered jailbreak would be a little quicker in coming this time around. Maybe not, says jailbreak developer pod2g, who was an instrumental member of the team that developed the iOS 5 jailbreak. On his Twitter account today pod2g said that he was spending hours per day looking for vulnerabilities, but that a public jailbreak tool was still “weeks” away. Check out his tweets below:

About 5.1 jailbreak for A5+ devices : it’s not out and I have no clue when it’ll happen. I’m working some hours per week on finding vulns. 12 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

But right now we (cdev) have some pieces of a userland jailbreak, but we miss some, and even if we had them all, there’s weeks of work… 12 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

… to put them all together in a public ready tool. 12 hours ago via Twitter for iPad ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

So there you have it. If you have iOS 5.1 and want to jailbreak your A5 (iPhone 4S, iPad 2) or A5X (new iPad) device, you’ve got some waiting to do. On the other hand, if you’re using a jailbroken iPhone 4S or iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1, then you’ll want to avoid updating to iOS 5.1, especially since Apple has taken measures to prevent users who have updated to iOS 5.1 from rolling back to iOS 5.0.1.

Unfortunately, a jailbreak dev’s work is never done. The longer it takes to get an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, the closer it will be to the release of the next iPhone. Not only is it likely to be running on a completely new processor, the A6, it will also coincide with the release of iOS 6. Whatever exploits are used to jailbreak iOS 5.1, you can bet that Apple will fix them in iOS 6. And so the jailbreak war goes on.

Do you have a new iPad you want to jailbreak? Are you eager to get iOS 5.1 on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2, but don’t want to lose your jailbreak? Are you prepared to wait a few weeks before jailbreaking your device? Let us know in the comments.

  • Untethered iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Coming Soon?

If there’s one rule that everyone who jailbreaks their iPhone or iPad knows, it’s this: do not update your iOS when Apple releases a new version. Though legally required to tolerate jailbreaking, Apple is not a fan of the practice, and has a habit of closing the exploits used to jailbreak iOS with every new release. The latest version, iOS 5.1, is no different. In fact, not only did Apple fix the exploits used to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, they even went so far as to acknowledge pod2g and the “2012 iOS Jailbreak Dream Team” in their list of security fixes for iOS 5.1.

    Another Waiting Game?

Considering how long it took for jailbreak developers to crack iOS 5.0.1 on A5 devices (the iPhone 4S and iPad 2), many worried that iOS 5.1 would be similarly hard to jailbreak. Now it looks like the wait may not be as long this time around. There was some cause to hope last week when a tethered jailbreak (i.e., requiring the phone to be re-jailbroken with every reboot) was announced. Even better, though jailbreak developer Stefan Esser, aka I0n1c, posted the following tweet early this afternoon:

The pictures in question appear to show an iPad 2 running an untethered jailbreak. Check out the images below:

Jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1

Jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1

Jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1

Even better, Esser seems confident that a jailbreak for the new iPad, due out tomorrow, would not take long to jailbreak. Early this morning he tweeted the following:

Anyway so maybe the iPad 3 will not be jailbroken tomorrow, but on Monday or whenever I get my iPad 3. 10 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Bold words, considering the trouble that iOS 5.0.1 gave jailbreak devs on A5 devices. Assuming Esser can follow through, though, we may see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 as soon as next week. • iOS 5.1 Reveals Details About iPad 3, iPhone 6

The latest beta release of iOS 5.1, the forthcoming update to the iOS operating system, has been found to contain some hints about what to expect from the next generation of iPhones and iPads. It seems that the software’s processing core management system contains references to quad-core processing. This means that Apple likely has a quad-core chip in the works, probably meant to go into the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices.

The current generation of devices – the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 – currently run on Apple’s dual-core A5 chip. The inclusion of references to the quad-core chip in the iOS 5.1 beta suggests that Apple is already testing such a chip – presumably to be called the A6 – in prototypes of the iPad 3 and iPhone 6.

Sidenote: Though many are still calling the next generation iPhone the iPhone 5, it will most likely be called the iPhone 6, since it is in fact the sixth generation iPhone. The iPhone 4S is the iPhone 5 in all but name, just as the iPhone 3G was actually the iPhone 2.

Digging through the code of Apple’s iOS updates is a time-honored means of looking for information on the next generation of Apple’s gadgets. Members of Apple’s developer program have been able to find references to the iPad, the Apple TV, and newer versions existing devices like the iPhone and iPad simply by digging through the operating system’s code. As launch time approaches, Apple will most likely continue to use current versions of the iOS software to text next generation devices – especially the iPad 3. Look for more juicy details to be found in the iOS code in the coming months.

  • iPhone 5 Rumor: iPhone 5,1 Spotted In iOS 5.1 Beta

As iOS 5.1 beta is being seeded to developers, everyone has already carefully picked through it in order to find the tiny hints that signal upcoming Apple devices. And iOS 5.1 beta is full of those indicators – the most important of which (or at least the one destined to generate the most chatter) involves the next generation iPhone.

It appears that Apple has internally labelled the upcoming iPhone as iPhone 5,1. As 9to5Mac points out, an indication of a new 4,X model would probably suggest small changes, but nothing really new when it comes to the guts. A move from 4,1 to 5,1 could mean that the new iPhone will sport a shiny new A6 processor, one that has already been rumored for the device.

Other changes that have been rumored for the device, which we now see as the iPhone 5,1, have dealt with the external features – most notably that the new device will have a 4-inch display.

It was hinted by Apple sources earlier this month that the teardrop-shaped, aluminum backed iPhone 5 was in fact already prototyped, and it was scrapped as it approached launch. According to that rumor, the radically redesigned iPhone 5 was Steve Jobs’ baby, and he nixed it because he was unhappy with the bigger screen, which he thought “fragmented iPhones.”

According to the iOS 5.1 beta information, the next-gen iPhone is at least on Apple’s slate of upcoming launches. Could it be this phone that so many people wanted when Apple released the 4S?

The iOS 5.1 beta also outed the iPad 2,4, which is most likely not a reference to the iPad 3 but possibly the Sprint version of the iPad 2.

What do you think the next generation iPhone will look like – both inside and out? Let us know in the comments.
