  • Wasteland 2 Shows Off 18 Minutes of Gameplay

Apparently, today is the day to release gameplay trailers. Just ask EA and 2K Games. Now, you can add inXile’s successfully Kickstarted title, Wasteland 2, to that pile. For those who are wondering where that 2-plus million dollars went, the extended gameplay trailer should give you a great idea.

The new video features a large portion of gameplay centered around Wasteland 2’s “The Prison” stage, which, according to the narrator, is the “fourth or fifth” stage in the upcoming game

For those who aren’t familiar with the franchise, the top-down RPG will probably remind some of Bethesda’s Fallout, at least regarding the environment and the presentation. If you’re a fan of point-and-click adventures where success is determined by how effectively players manage their teams that take place in apocalyptic environments, you’ll want to check out what Wasteland 2 is offering. Over at the Kickstarter page, the developers provide some more details about what players can expect:

The Prison is the 4th or 5th area in the game depending on how you approach it. Wasteland 2 is an open game so potentially, you could travel straight to it if you want a real challenge… but it probably won’t go so well… This is only a tiny fraction of the game which is very hard to show in a 20 minute update. It represents about 1/3rd of the prison map and isn’t even one of the larger levels, so you can imagine it can be tricky for us to share enough without too many spoilers or overwhelming you.

While no release date has been officially announced, Wasteland 2 goes into beta in October 2013.

  • inXile Entertainment Gets Help For Wasteland 2

Good news and bad news time. The good news is that inXile Entertainment, the party responsible for the sequel to Wasteland 2, has got Obsidian Entertainment on board for the game. The bad news? There is a catch. The project is currently on Kickstarter where it raised over $900,000 in it’s first two days. They are currently at $1,714,815 and if they get to $2.1 million during the 17 days remaining on the project, they’ll be bringing in Obisidian Entertainment, including Chris Avellone, to help them make the game.

“Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance,” said Chris Avellone. ” hile I’ve worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual successor to the Fallout franchise is a honor.”

The goal might have seemed lofty at first, but after they got 90% done in the first 2 days, it wasn’t a stretch to see them wanting to reach for the stars!

Brian Fargo, the lead on the Wasteland 2 project observes that “I have a history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay’s Black Isle studios. Together we created some of the greatest RPG’s of all time, from Fallout 1 & 2 to titles like Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. It is great that we now have a chance to reunite on a project like Wasteland 2.” “Obsidian has an incredible library of story, dialog and design tools that they have used to create hits like Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and of course, Fallout: New Vegas. Regardless of the tech we use to develop the game, experience with these tools will help us efficiently design the game without wasting time and resources on the tools needed for development.”

    Yesss…adding @ChrisAvellone to Wasteland II is a wonderful thing. RT @BrianFargo: http://t.co/wJ6pcNZi 14 minutes ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@RaveofRavendale pretty sure with Obsidian on board we can get ’em to agree to return our money if Wasteland 2 doesn’t get 90 on Metacritic. 3 hours ago via Tweetbot for iOS ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Wasteland 2 Hopes To Get Funded Through Kickstarter

Ever since Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine shattered Kickstarter records by raising over $3 million dollars for their new game, other developers like the Tecmo MMO team have met with success after taking their project to Kickstarter.

inXile, the developer behind the last year’s Hunted: The Demon Forge, has begun a Kickstarter campaign to fund a sequel to Wasteland. A lot of newer gamers may be wondering what Wasteland is. If there was no Wasteland, there would not have been Fallout. If there was no Fallout, there would not have been 2008 game of the year Fallout 3. Wasteland was the original post-apocalyptic RPG and inXile feels that it’s time for a new one.

This is where you, the fans, come in. They can’t do this alone because this style of hardcore PC RPG is frowned upon by publishers. It’s too much of a risk for publishers who only want to fund sure fire hits.

They team needs $900,000 to make the game a success. In reality, they need $1 million, but Brian Fargo, head of the Wasteland 2 team, has already pledged $100,000 if they reach their goal.

What will gamers get if the project exceeds its funding goals? The team says that at $1.25 million, they will make the game bigger, add more maps, more stories and more music. If the funding reaches $1.5 million, they will port the game to Mac OS X for even more gamers to enjoy.

The development of Wasteland 2 already has the big names attached to it. Brian Fargo, executive producer of both Wasteland and Fallout, is back on tap to head the team making the game. The game’s original designers, Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole, are also back on the team to make this the best love letter to classic PC RPG fans there is.

The current development team isn’t the only group working on the game. The fans who fund the project will be deeply involved with the development process. The Kickstarter page lays it out:

We’re planning on an initial 6 months of pre-production. We’ll nail down every important element that you, our creative partners, want. Once we have all that figured out, we buckle down for 12 month development cycle. During that time, players can get a sneak peek on a private closed beta through Steam. In addition, we will be giving you constant updates and showing you our progress along the way.

At the moment, the game has raised a little over $108,000 in pledges with 1,828 backers. It still has 34 days to raise the $900,000 needed to fund the game. If it performs anything like the Double Fine Kickstarter, it should reach that goal in a few days time.

The more important thing about this project is its potential success. As the Kickstarter page states, this is their chance to prove the big publishers wrong about old school RPGs. Kickstarter provides an avenue for indie developers to be heard and get the funding they need without the help of a major publisher.

If you would like to be a part of this potentially historic game in the making, check out the Kickstarter page and see what the team is up to. This is the chance of a lifetime to see the return of a genre that’s been dormant for years.
