Emily Blunt Reveals How She Hid Her Pregnancy During “Into The Woods” Filming

In the upcoming musical Into the Woods, Emily Blunt plays a baker’s wife who is desperate to have a child but can’t because of a curse placed upon her and her husband by a witch played by Meryl Streep. In a strange twist of fate, Blunt found out that she was actually pregnant with her first child while they were shooting the film! In an interview with Disney twenty-three, a publication for Disney’s official fan club, Blunt and Streep revealed how they managed to hide the pregnancy during filming.

“That was pretty funny,” Streep said in the interview. “They were constantly putting James Corden [the Baker] in front of her belly, raising her apron higher and higher.” Blunt talked about the other ways they managed to hide her baby bump when she was starting show. “I was hiding behind every tree in that wood,” the actress joked. “Colleen Atwood, who’s the most remarkable costume designer, as everybody knows, was so accommodating. I would say towards the end, every four or five days they were making some adjustments.”

Blunt added that her actual pregnancy helped her understand her role even more. She said in the same interview, “The fact that I was pregnant actually was a rather transporting thing, and a very helpful experience in a way to understanding the urgent need that this woman has for a baby. Here I was, feeling incredibly blessed and understanding what the character maybe is missing out on.”

The actress and first time mom married actor John Krasinski in Italy back in 2010. Earlier this year, Blunt finally gave birth to their first child Hazel. Three months after the birth, Krasinski shared a picture of their little girl on Twitter with the caption, “Pics of kids should only come direct from parents. So I’m thrilled to introduce you guys to Hazel!!!”

Emily Blunt On Hiding Her Bump For “Into The Woods”

Emily Blunt will most definitely shine as the baker’s wife on the new Disney movie, Into the Woods. The baker and his wife head out into the woods to collect things for the witch, who promises to lift the barren curse.

The irony wasn’t lost on Emily Blunt when she became pregnant before filming began.

“That was pretty funny,” Blunt’s co-star Meryl Streep said to D23 of the ordeal. “They were constantly putting James Corden [the baker] in front of her belly, raising her apron higher and higher.”

    Wow. Movie magic these days!

Movie magic as it was, Emily Blunt did her fair share of work to hide her growing belly.

She said, “I was hiding behind every tree in that wood! Colleen Atwood, who’s the most remarkable costume designer, as everybody knows, was so accommodating. I would say towards the end, every four or five days they were making some adjustments.”

Co-star Chris Pine had to make some adjustments of his own in order to not throw out his back during some fancy dancing.

“When we did rehearsals, I was being kind of careful,” she recalled to Disney twenty-three. “By the time we shot, it was about two months later and I said to Chris Pine, ‘You need to add 15 pounds to what you felt before. When you dip me, you gotta get yourself in a deep lunge because there’s more weight coming down!’”

In addition to scrambling to accomodate her bump, Emily Blunt also got some useful lessons from her baby about how the baker’s wife must have felt and what sort of emotions would have been in place.

“The fact that I was pregnant actually was a rather transporting thing, and a very helpful experience in a way to understanding the urgent need that this woman has for a baby,” she said. “Here I was, feeling incredibly blessed and understanding what the character maybe is missing out on.”

What a great behind-the-scenes story to keep in mind when going to the theaters to see Emily Blunt in Into the Woods!

Emily Blunt Used Co-Stars to Hide Pregnancy In ‘Into The Woods’

Emily Blunt used props, costumes, and co-stars to hide her pregnancy during the Into The Woods filming.

Blunt plays The Baker’s Wife in Disney’s upcoming adaptation of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical Into The Woods. Her character desperately wants to have children but cannot.

Amusingly, the Edge of Tomorrow actress found out she was pregnant right before filming began. The costume department had to figure out how to hide it.

The Into The Woods cast spoke to Disney twenty-three (D23), Disney’s official fan club magazine, about the movie. They also shared some interesting details about the process of covering up Blunt’s baby bump.

Meryl Streep told D23 that  "they were constantly putting James Corden [the Baker] in front of her belly, raising her apron higher and higher." Blunt also shared that she "was hiding behind every tree in that wood! Colleen Atwood, who's the most remarkable costume designer, as everybody knows, was so accommodating. I would say towards the end, every four or five days they were making some adjustments."
Chris Pine, who plays Cinderella's Prince, also had to make some changes to adjust to Blunt's pregnancy. The two actors share a dance scene. "When we did rehearsals, I was being kind of careful, By the time we shot, it was about two months later and I said to Chris Pine, 'You need to add 15 pounds to what you felt before. When you dip me, you gotta get yourself in a deep lunge because there's more weight coming down!'" She told Disney Twenty-Three. Blunt gave birth to her first child with husband John Krasinski in Feburary. They introduced their daughter, Hazel, to the world via a Tweet.   Since giving birth, Blunt has gushed about motherhood. She told Vogue magazine that motherhood was "the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me." Try to spot all the ways they hide Blunt's pregnancy when Into The Woods hits theaters nationwide on December 25.

  • Bernadette Peters: “Into The Woods” Cast Reunion

Bernadette Peters joined other former cast members of the immensely popular Broadway play Into the Woods on Sunday. The reunion was a highly-anticipated event which brought together many of the original cast, as well as the behind-the-scenes creators of the show.

According to Playbill.com, Bernadette Peters, who originally played the witch, and Joanna Gleason, who played the baker’s wife, “looked like they could step back into the next Woods revival without missing a beat.”

The first 20 minutes of Sunday’s event featured Stephen Sondheim, composer, and James Lapine, libretist, in conversation with host Mo Rocca discussing the play’s origins and inspiration.

Apparently, Into the Woods came about as a follow-up project to the team’s Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim suggested a “quest musical” along the lines of The Wizard of Oz.

When they decided to mix the fairy tales of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel with an original story about a childless baker, a quest is certainly what they got.

The second act featured the song “Your Fault” which reunited Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Ben Wright, Danielle Ferland and Kim Crosby and brought down the house.

Bernadette Peters largely carried the second act. She performed a trio of Woods numbers and also shared some of the talk time with Sondheim and Lapine.

She quickly learned that the part of the witch was still available following the show’s pre-Broadway run in San Diego. Bernadette Peters, who knew nothing about the role, threw her hat in the ring right on the spot.

The witch, she admitted, is the outsider. Bernadette Peters loved playing the pragmatist who says what everybody else is thinking and who has no problem being unpopular.

    Who wouldn’t love that?

  • Bernadette Peters Goes Back “Into the Woods”

“How many of you know Into the Woods?”

On November 9 a reunion of the original cast and creators of the award-winning musical Into the Woods took place at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA.

The event was hosted by humorist Mo Rocca who spoke to composer Stephen Sondheim and librettist James Lapine for the first 20 minutes as they discussed the musical’s inspiration and origins. The two men even talked about their conflicts, which were few.

“Steve had a rule,” said Lapine. “‘Whoever cares the most wins.’”

The first performers to take the stage were Chip Zien (the Baker) and Joanna Gleason (the Baker’s Wife) who sang a rendition of “It Takes Two.” During the original production Zien and Gleason had an off-stage relationship which, Gleason said, definitely had its peaks and valleys.

“He was the first actor I ever worked with who I ended up hitting,” said Gleason.

Zien finished the segment with “No More” followed by Kim Crosby (Cinderella) who sang “On the Steps of the Palace.”

Others to perform that evening were Robert Westenberg (Cinderella’s Prince, and later the Wolf), who is now Crosby’s real-life husband, Danielle Ferland (Little Red Riding Hood), and Ben Wright (Jack) who, although he’s now a financial advisor, still sang a magical rendition of “Giants in the Sky.”

Last but not least came Bernadette Peters, 66, who basically took over the second half of the night, talking onstage with Sondheim and Lapine and performing numbers such as “Stay With Me” and “Last Midnight.” As always, Peters’ voice was stage gold and she looked like she hasn’t aged a day.

In the past, Sondheim has said of Peters, “Like very few others, she sings and acts at the same time. Most performers act and then sing, act and then sing … Bernadette is flawless as far as I’m concerned. I can’t think of anything negative.”

The evening ended with the entire cast coming together to sing “Children Will Listen.”

With the excitement of Disney’s Into the Woods film opening on Christmas Day, new fans are being grown every minute. Oddly enough, the film was barely mentioned at the November 9 event which instead focused on the show’s nearly 30-year heritage.

Rocca even asked Sondheim and Lapine about creating a sequel.

Out of the Woods?” Sondheim replied, but left the question unanswered.

  • Anna Kendrick Talks Looks And Drive To Work

Anna Kendrick seems to have come out of nowhere, and she is now a very sought after actress.

Over the last few years, she has played in a variety of films, most notably Pitch Perfect and Up In The Air.

Anna said that while she has many fans, she also has many critics and some of them don’t think she is pretty enough to be as popular as she is or deserving of certain roles.

“The most common thing that I get is, ‘Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?'” she told Marie Claire during an interview. “And you’re like, ‘No, you’re not the only one. Arguably, all of the boys in my high school agree with you.'”

Kendrick said that she doesn’t let the criticism get her down and that she is happy to have been given such great roles and to have had the success she has experienced.

She just finished working on the new Disney film, Into The Woods as well as Pitch Perfect 2 and said that she is very driven and feels like she always needs to be working or have a project lined up.

“Mostly it’s the fear that the wolves are always at your heels and you’re going to be tossed out into the street,” she told the magazine. “If you grow up middle class, you just always feel like you’ve got to be working, because otherwise you won’t be able to pay the rent.”

It seems like Anna’s success hasn’t gone to her head and she is a very down to earth person.

  • Anna Kendrick Opens Up About Criticism Regarding Her Looks

Anna Kendrick is one of the most high profile actresses in the movie industry right now. But it seems all is not perfect in the world of Ms. Kendrick. Despite nabbing the cover spot on the December issue of Marie Clare, the star talks about the constant criticism she’s been given because of her appearance. She tells the magazine, “The most common thing that I get is, ‘Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?’ And you’re like, ‘No, you’re not the only one. Arguably, all of the boys in my high school agree with you.”

The Pitch Perfect star has always been self-deprecating when it comes to her looks, even describing herself as “not beer-commercial-babe hot”. In an interview with Glamour magazine back in August, Kendrick talked about her image and how it doesn’t affect the kind of roles she’s been given. “The thing is, my appearance — that’s never been my moneymaker. I’m fine being small. I’m fine being all the things I am. And I’m happy I’m not supposed to be on the ’50 Most Beautiful’ list all the time, because that would be super fucking stressful,” she said.

Kendrick has always been known for her quirky, out-of-left-field roles, and she says that her unique take on Cinderella for the film Into the Woods is no different. “You see what happens after she marries the prince, when you start to face problems in seemingly perfect situations,” she explains. “The interesting thing about her is she overthinks things, she’s uncertain–we don’t see that in most versions. In a lot of ways, I think it’s this incredibly brave story. She’s neglected and abused her entire life she finally gets love and it’s not the kind of love she was looking for, and she stands up for herself.”

  • Anna Kendrick On Being Criticized For Her Looks

Anna Kendrick recently opened up about the constant criticism she receives for her looks. While most find the Twilight actress beautiful, Kendrick said not everyone feels that way.

“The most common thing that I get is, ‘Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?'” Kendrick told Marie Claire for the December issue that she serves as the cover girl for. “And you’re like, ‘No, you’re not the only one. Arguably, all of the boys in my high school agree with you.'”

Aside from her role in the Twilight saga, Kendrick is probably best known for her role alongside George Clooney in the 2009 film Up in the Air for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

“It was insane,” she said of her nomination. “Like really groovy and exciting. [But] there was a lot of ‘Why me?’—that sort of thing.”

Kendrick also talked about her most recent role as Cinderella in the upcoming film Into the Woods. She described her character as “thoughtful, complicated, and uncertain.”

“The character is thoughtful and complicated. You see what happens after she marries the prince, when you start to face problems in seemingly perfect situations,” she explained to the magazine. “The interesting thing about her is she overthinks things, she’s uncertain – we don’t see that in most versions. In a lot of ways, I think it’s this incredibly brave story. She’s neglected and abused her entire life she finally gets love and it’s not the kind of love she was looking for, and she stands up for herself.”

Into the Woods also stars Maryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, and James Gordon. The film is set to premiere in theaters on December 25.

  • Into the Woods: Sneak Peek of Johnny Depp as the Wolf

Into the Woods: Sneak Peek of Johnny Depp as the Wolf

    I wish…

Fans of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods are anxious for the film to arrive this December. But in the meantime, Entertainment Weekly’s annual Holiday Movie Preview is giving audiences a sneak peek with four different colorful covers featuring characters from the film.

Cover 1 of 4 gives us the first glimpse of actor Johnny Depp in the role of The Wolf. Wearing something similar to a zoot suit, Depp stands alongside actress Lilla Crawford who plays Little Red Riding Hood.

Others in the cast include Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) as the Witch, Mackenzie Mauzy (Broadway cast of Next to Normal) as Rapunzel, Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) as Cinderella, Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Cinderella’s Prince, James Corden (the new host of The Late Late Show on CBS) as the Baker, and Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow) as the Baker’s Wife.

“I’ve been offered many witches over the years, starting when I was 40, and I said no to all of them,” Streep told Entertainment weekly. “But this was really fun because it played with the notion of what witches mean. They represented age and ugliness and scary powers we don’t understand. So here’s my opportunity to say, here’s what you wish for when you’re getting old.”

Others in the cast include Daniel Huttlestone (Les Miserables) as Jack, Tracey Ullman (The Tracy Ullman Show) as Jack’s Mother, Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) as Cinderella’s Stepmother, and Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) as the Giant.

For those who aren’t familiar with the story of Into the Woods, it is a “modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.”

The original Broadway production premiered on November 5, 1987 and ran for 764 performances, winning Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason as the Baker’s Wife).

Although the big-screen adaptation will include songs from the musical including “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky,” “On the Steps of the Palace,” and “Agony,” among others, some aspects of the film will be different. While still keeping dark elements, some changes include The Wolf’s relationship with Little Red, which will no longer be sexual, Rapunzel not meeting a grisly death, and the Baker’s Wife not having an affair with Cinderella’s Prince.

“I didn’t want this to look like a cartoon world,” said director Rob Marshall (Chicago). “It’s not sunny, sunny, sunny – we wanted a sense of danger.”

Into the Woods hits theaters on December 25 (Christmas Day).

  • Meryl Streep Gets Witchy In New Trailer

Meryl Streep Gets Witchy In New Trailer

Meryl Streep is trying on a new look for her latest film, and it’s far from the glamour-puss she portrayed in The Devil Wears Prada.

Streep stars along with Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, and a slew of other stars in Into The Woods, which is based on the Tony-award winning musical and features a series of fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack (of Beanstalk fame). The Oscar-winning actress portrays a witch in an original story woven into the tale, and from the looks of the new trailer, she really threw herself into the role.

The film is set for a Christmas Day release and is directed by Rob Marshall, who also directed Chicago.

Johnny Depp also stars in the film as the Big Bad Wolf, although he is only briefly seen in the first trailer as he hides behind a tree.

The Little Red Riding Hood part of the story made headlines last year when it was announced that YouTube sensation Sophia Grace Brownlee would portray Riding Hood; the then-10-year old was compared to Honey Boo Boo on Twitter, where fans of the original musical vented about the casting choice and wondered why such a young actress was chosen for a scene in which the character is essentially “seduced” by the wolf. The part of Red was eventually given to teen actress Lilla Crawford.

Although there’s no actual singing happening in the trailer, Streep, Kendrick, and Depp all have experience with musicals, so fans are anxiously awaiting another trailer that will show off their skills.
