  • Day Care Center Crash In Florida Kills 1, Injures 14

A Florida day care center was the site of a car accident on Wednesday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol a car was sent into the KinderCare DayCare in the Orlando area after being hit by a Dodge Durango. Highway patrol spokeswoman Wanda Diaz said the car broke through the wall and went into the building after jumping a curb.

The accident caused 14 injuries and one death. The driver of the car was not hurt.

Eight of the of the people injured, including the child that died were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. A spokeswoman for the hospital did not release the age or gender of the child. One person is still in critical condition, five are in serious condition, and one has since been discharged.

The other injured parties were taken to other local hospitals. According to the Orange County Fire Rescue, two were treated at the scene.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs took to Twitter to send out thoughts and prayers for those injured in the accident.

Authorities quickly began to look for the Dodge Durango and its driver, 28-year-old Robert Corchado.

One person even took to Twitter to help people recognize the type of car authorities were looking for.

The Durango was found at a house, but Corchado was nowhere to be found. The people living in the house said their friend had dropped off the Durango.

Officials first believed Corchado was going to get a plane ticket and flee the area, but soon the police found that Corchado had rented a small black or white Mazda SUV from a local Enterprise Rent-A-Car with the Florida license plate CHR Q41.

If you have any information on Corchado you are urged to call the patrol at 407-737-2300 or 911.

  • Cooking Class Explosion Caused By Heating Hot Cocoa

A small fire erupted inside a biology lab at Northside College Prep High School while students were participating in a class activity. The project involved heating hot chocolate on a single-burner stove under the supervision of an instructor. The gas used during the activity ultimately triggered the fire; however, the sprinkler system quickly extinguished the flames. According to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford the fire reportedly began around 10:30. “The fire was doused immediately,” Spokesman Langford said.

School administrators were quick to act during the incident and immediately evacuated the student body, which consisted of roughly 1,000 adolescents. Northside College Prep High School Principal Kelly Mest praised the efforts of staff and students throughout the ordeal to remain calm in spite of the potential trauma.

Five students were injured as a result of the explosion. Four of these students were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital for treatment while the fifth student refused treatment. The most severely injured student had noticeable burn damage inflicted on the upper area of the body including the face, hands, and even neck. Two of the students were transported to the hospital in stable condition. One student is reported to have been in good condition.

Once it was determined that there were no lingering dangers for the students, classes were permitted to resume. Recent reports claim that an investigation is presently underway involving the “routine cooking instruction” that resulted in a classroom fire.

  • Naval Base Shooting: Two Injured At Tennessee Armory

We all remember the shooter that went wild at the Navy yard in Washington in September. Today, another naval base has been attacked by a shooter in Tennessee, causing the naval base to go on a lockdown.

The gun violence in the United States has elevated to an alarming rate in recent years, and something clearly need to be done in order to stop these kinds of attacks.

Officials reported earlier on Thursday that a member of the national guard had opened fire at an armory outside a U.S. Navy base in Tennessee. During the attack, he injured two soldiers, before being subdued and disarmed by other soldiers on site.

Two national guard members were shot, one being injured in the leg, and the other in the foot. The victims were rushed to the hospital to treat their non life-threatening injuries, and are expected to be able to go home soon.

The shooter was a recruiter who had previously been relieved of his duty. His name has not been revealed, but Major General Max Haston of the Tennessee Military Department told reporters that the suspect is a sergeant first-class, who has worked for the National Guard for the past six or seven years.

The Navy base in Millington, Tennessee, was briefly on lockdown during the afternoon on Thursday. While the event involved three members of the National Guard, the incident did not take place on the base, but at the armory, which is located on Navy property.

The Military has stated that this is not a Navy related issue. Thankfully, the suspect was brought into custody shortly after the incident or else much worse things could have happened. Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback said of the situation, “I’m sure there could have been more injury if they hadn’t taken him into custody.”

The Naval base shooting caused great drama earlier today in the small town of Millington. Millington is a town of roughly 10,000 people just 9 miles outside of Memphis.

  • Rashad Johnson Tweets Picture Of Finger Injury [Graphic]

On Sunday, Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson suffered a gruesome injury against the Saints, losing part of his finger. According to reports, he didn’t even know it happened until he took off his glove and the tip of his finger was still inside.

Naturally, the morbidly curious begged Johnson on Twitter to tweet out a picture. After some reluctance, he decided to be a crowd pleaser.

Now, avert your eyes if you don’t want to see the graphic image of a severed fingertip.

Injuries happen in the NFL every single week, but few players probably expect to lose pieces of their bodies. At least Johnson appears to be in good spirits.

  • Twitter Is Begging Arizona Cardinals Safety Rashad Johnson To Tweet A Picture Of His Finger Injury

Arizona Cardinals Safety Rashad Johnson suffered a gruesome injury in the game against the Saints on Sunday. He lost the top of his left middle finger. The story goes that he only discovered the injury when he took his glove off, and the finger was still in there.

Football players suffer injuries every week, and know that there is always the risk of getting hurt, but I doubt many of them expect this type of injury.

Of course a lot of the morbidly curious would like to see what the injury looks like, and they’re practically begging Johnson to tweet a picture of it.

As former NFL safety Louis Riddick discussed on ESPN, this isn’t an entirely unique injury:

But even his story is from the early 90s. Nobody is expecting to lose a finger on any given Sunday.

  • Baltimore Ravens Struggle In Week 1 Loss To Broncos

Baltimore Ravens, the defending Super Bowl champs, simply failed to show up and impress their fans during the first game of the NFL season. The Ravens played the Broncos in Denver and nothing seemed to go right, from the start of the game when the game was delayed because of the rain and thunderstorm approaching. It was set up to be an incredible rematch of the spectacular double over-time bout that the two teams experienced the last time that they played in the playoffs last year.

The Ravens won the last match-up and then went on to win the Super Bowl. This caused the Denver Broncos to want to take revenge and they certainly did, as Peyton Manning set a record of passing touchdowns in a single game. He connected with his receivers in the end-zone seven different times. The final score of the game ended 49-27 in favor of Manning’s Broncos.

The game started out well enough, with the Ravens forcing the Broncos to punt on every first quarter possession, according to Bleacher Report. The Ravens maintained the lead for much of the early part of the game, but it did not take long for things to turn sour. It all started when their rookie safety Brynden Trawick ran into one of their star receivers Jacoby Jones, on a punt return. This left Jones with a sprained knee, and caused him to leave for the night.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdGGfa3K8Zc

The momentum just did not come back for the Ravens after this, and they continued to beat themselves by getting penalties. They were soon looking at a huge deficit, causing their running game to be completely useless as well. Peyton Manning just kept racking up the touchdowns with his new all-star Wes Welker and could not be stopped.

It has been a great challenge for the team to rebuild, after losing a number of their stars from their Super Bowl winning team. The Ravens lost Anquan Boldin to the 49ers and a number of their veteran defensive stars as well. They lost Ed Reed to the Houston Texans, and Ray Lewis to retirement. Baltimore certainly has some work to do before they get ready to host the Cleveland Browns next Sunday. Fortunately, linebacker Terrell Suggs was not too affected by the game, telling USA Today that “It’s one game. But I guarantee they will see us again.”

Torrey Smith also chimed in via twitter, showig that it is just one game and how they are able to come back and be ready for them next time.

  • Cities Safer Than Rural Areas, Shows Study

Americans’ vision of the rural U.S. is often the idyllic Mayberry setting of The Andy Griffith Show. However, a new study has now shown that the rural U.S. can actually be more dangerous than U.S. cities.

The study, to be published this week in the journal Annals of Emergency Medicine, shows that the risk of death from injuries is lower on average in urban counties than in suburban and rural counties. Overall, the risk of death from injuries was found to be approximately 20% lower in urban areas than in the rural U.S.

“Perceptions have long existed that cities were innately more dangerous than areas outside of cities, but our study shows this is not the case” said Dr. Sage Myers, lead author of the study and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “These findings may lead people who are considering leaving cities for non-urban areas due to safety concerns to re-examine their motivations for moving. And we hope the findings could also lead us to re-evaluate our rural health care system and more appropriately equip it to both prevent and treat the health threats that actually exist.”

The study looked at over 1.2 million injury deaths from 1999 to 2006. Car accidents, firearms, and poisoning were found to be the top causes of injury-related death for the U.S. population. Deaths from car crashes were found to be twice as high in rural areas than in urban ones. Firearm-related deaths were higher for children and those over 45 in rural areas, but higher in urban areas for Americans age 20 to 44. Overall homicide rates are higher in urban areas, though suicide rates for those under 19 were higher in rural areas.

“Cars, guns and drugs are the unholy trinity causing the majority of injury deaths in the U.S.,” said Myers. “Although the risk of homicide is higher in big cities, the risk of unintentional injury death is 40 percent higher in the most rural areas than in the most urban. And overall, the rate of unintentional injury dwarfs the risk of homicide, with the rate of unintentional injury more than 15 times that of homicide among the entire population. This has important implications about staffing of emergency departments and trauma care systems in rural areas, which tend to be underserved as it is.”

  • Fourth Of July Accident Injures 28 In Simi Valley, California

Fourth of July accidents are unfortunately not uncommon on the holiday. From fireworks to parade mishaps, people will be injured or killed.

One of the scarier accidents on Thursday happened in Simi Valley, California. The city was setting off fireworks when the platform that held the fireworks turned over sending the explosives into the crowd. An estimated 28 people were injured in the explosion. Here’s video of the accident courtesy of YouTube user camstack1:

After the accident, the police evacuated the area and shut down the event. The police also said that four of the 28 injured were considered seriously injured, but their current status is unknown.

Unfortunately, the fireworks incident wasn’t the only accident to happen on Thursday. In Edmond, Oklahoma, an 8-year-old boy fell off of a float during a parade, and was run over by said float. He was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.

On a final and more lighthearted note, let’s take a look back at a humorous accident that happened last year when the city of San Diego launched its entire firework payload in the span of 15 seconds. Nobody was hurt except for the pride of some city workers.

[Warning: This post contains graphic images]

Wrestler Hulk Hogan is back in the news this week, and it’s not for another twist in his quest to remove descriptions of his sex tape from the internet.

On Sunday afternoon, Hogan posted pictures of his swollen, burned hand. He claims that a radiator exploded on his hand:

Hogan later apologized for posting the graphic burned hand photos to Twitter, but he has not deleted the tweets:

  • CBS Broken Leg Replay Banned on TV, “No Problem” Online

CBS was broadcasting the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional final between Louisville and Duke on Sunday when Louisville player Kevin Ware suffered one of the most gruesome injuries ever seen in college basketball. As Ware jumped to block a three point shot he landed poorly, snapping his tibia (shin) bone in half.

CBS replayed the event twice in the immediate aftermath, but then placed a ban on showing the footage any further. Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports told the Associated Press that the decision not to replay the footage further was an easy one, as the injury can be seen using DVRs or the internet. He went on to say that he has seen how popular the footage is on YouTube, and has “no problem with that.”

With that statement in mind, and to satisfy the morbid curiosity in all of us, the replay of Kevin Ware’s injury is embedded below. The footage is from quite a distance, but the event is still very cringe-worthy:

For those who are still curious, a close-up of Ware’s injury (the un-cropped version of the photo at the top of this story) can be viewed at the following link. Be aware, though, that the injury is quite disturbing, and probably NSFW:

Ware is reported to already be back on his feet, with crutches. Ware has been tweeting his thanks for all the well-wishes he has received and even tweeted a picture of his leg in its current state:

  • Bouncy Castle Injuries See Huge Rise in U.S.

A new study published today in the journal Pediatrics shows that injuries to children associated with inflatable bounce houses has risen dramatically over the past fifteen years. According to researchers, bouncy castle-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments increased 15-fold from 2005 to 2010. In 2010, more than 30 children per day (one every 45 minutes) were treated for bouncy castle injuries.

The majority of the injuries, 43%, were caused by falls. 28% of the injuries were broken bones, and 27% were strains or sprains. However, 19% of the injuries were to the head and neck. The study’s authors say this demonstrates the danger of bouncy castles.

“The findings from this study show that there has been an alarming increase in the number of injuries from inflatable bouncers,” said Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “It is time for us to take action to prevent these injuries. Ensuring that parents are aware of the potential risks, improving surveillance of the injuries, developing national safety guidelines and improving bouncer design are the first steps.”

Smith and his colleagues point out that the injury pattern for bouncy castles is similar to that of trampolines, which already have national safety guidelines.

“The medical and public health community has yet to provide recommendations on the safe use of inflatable bouncers,” said Smith. “The growing epidemic of inflatable bouncer injuries make it clear that it is time to do so.”

The study’s authors suggest that parents consider the risks of bouncy castles before allowing their children to use them. If parents do allow their children to use bouncy castles, the recommendation is that only children 6 years and older be allowed on them, one at a time, and that an adult be present for supervision. Also, if more than one child is to be allowed on such an apparatus, the authors suggest that the children be of approximately the same age and size.

It’s worth mentioning that the increase in injuries does not necessarily mean that bouncy castles are becoming more dangerous. The increase could simply point to an increased popularity of the attractions, with no accompanying safety regulations or recommendations. 44% of the injuries cited in the study occurred in a recreational setting, such as a fair, and 38% occurred at home.

  • Tiger Woods Out Of U.S. Open, Announces Via Twitter

It’s always a bad day for golf when Tiger Woods has to miss a big tournament, so I guess you can call this a pretty terrible one for fans. Today, Tiger Woods announced via Twitter that he will be unable to participate in this year’s U.S Open Major Championship.

Tiger expressed his frustration to his near one million followers a short while ago:

Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain. 2 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

This year’s second major tournament will be held at the famed Blue Course at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The beautiful course is often put in the category of best courses in America, and was recently renovated in 2009. The U.S. Open will kick off next Thursday.

Tiger’s left leg has been the source of his troubles since he ruptured his ACL and suffered a double stress fracture of his tibia during the 2008 U.S. Open. He miraculously finished the tournament, hobbling his way to victory at Torrey Pines in an 18-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate. It was truly one of the best sports performances many people have ever seen.

He returned this year to competitive play after some personal issues sidetracked him in 2009. At this years Masters Tournament, Woods aggravated his injuries and suffered an MCL sprain and a mild Achilles strain in the same leg. He attempted to give The Players Championship a go but had to withdraw after just 9 holes.

Woods also posted this statement to his website, saying he doesn’t want to risk further damage:

I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be playing in the U.S. Open, but it’s time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future. I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National, the next two majors and the rest of the year.

Tiger Woods is golf’s biggest draw and the sport needs him when it comes to interest and ratings. Plus he’s just the most dynamic player to watch, period. Here’s to hoping he can return as soon as possible.

Here are some other tweets rolling in about Tiger:
