  • Sean Connery Champions Scottish Independence

The original James Bond, Sean Connery, recently wrote an essay concerning the independence of his native Scotland, which was featured on the website of The New Statesman. While Connery presently resides in the Bahamas, he’s stated that if a referendum that is to take place in six months separates Scotland from the United Kingdom, he would return to his homeland.

    Connery, 83, wrote:

“More than anything else, culture defines a country. It provides international visibility and stimulates global interest more than a nation’s politics, business or economy ever can. So, with our colorful history, strong identity, deep rooted traditions, a commitment to artistic innovation and diverse and beautiful landscapes, Scotland is truly blessed.”

Referring to his essay, Connery added on Tuesday that “As a Scot and as someone with a lifelong love for both Scotland and the arts, I believe the opportunity of independence is too good to miss.”

Sir Thomas Sean Connery is best known for his portrayal of James Bond in 7 films, and won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role in The Untouchables. The actor has been voted as “The Greatest Living Scot” and “Scotland’s Greatest Living National Treasure.” In 1989, he was declared “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine and in 1999, at the age of 69, he was voted “Sexiest Man of the Century”.

Here’s a clip of some of Connery’s best performances:

Connery elaborates on his views in his essay, “Simply put – there is no more creative an act than creating a new nation. Scotland has an opportunity to make a step change. More than anything else, culture defines a country. It provides international visibility and stimulates global interest more than a nation’s politics, business or economy ever can. So, with our colourful history, strong identity, deep rooted traditions, a commitment to artistic innovation and diverse and beautiful landscapes, Scotland is truly blessed.”
