  • Intel’s CEO: ‘AMD In the Rearview Mirror…Never Again In the Windshield’

Intel’s CEO: ‘AMD In the Rearview Mirror…Never Again In the Windshield’

Intel’s CEO Pat Gelsinger released a video on LinkedIn welcoming the new year, and took the opportunity to take a major swipe at rival AMD.

Intel has had a rough few years, with the company losing its once undisputed dominance in the semiconductor industry. TSMC is now the world’s largest chipmaker, and AMD has released a steady stream of competitive chips — in the form of its Ryzen line — that have challenged Intel across its various markets. The company has seen some high-profile defections among its customers, thanks to the performance and efficiency of AMD’s latest designs.

According to Gelsinger, however, those days are in the past, thanks to Intel’s Alder Lake line of chips.

“Alder Lake, all of sudden, boom! We are back in the game! AMD in the rearview mirror in clients, and never again will they be in the windshield,” Gelsinger said.

A number of the commenters who responded to Gelsinger’s post were quick to point out that Intel is still technologically behind AMD. While Intel has barely made the move to 10nm processors, AMD is already on 7nm, and will soon move to 4nm.

Benjamin Banks, a self-processed “Linux nerd,” wrote:

Intel launched a 10nm processor in November 2021, 364 days after AMD launched their 7nm chip, and somehow you claim superiority? Intel’s arrogance is staggering. AMD are about to launch a 4nm chip, while still Intel lags behind in what can only be described as a legacy manufacturing process.

Patryk Jarosz, Information Technology Technical Specialist at IKEA, voiced similar sentiments:

It also speaks volumes how they claim superiority with much newer product… Lets see how this stands up to whatever AMD will bring out in few months, shall we?

There’s no doubt Gelsinger is in the process of turning Intel around and helping it get back on track. As many of the comments point out, however, the company still has a long way to go before AMD is truly in the rearview — if that scenario is even still possible.

  • Major Retailers Commit to Zero-Carbon Ships by 2040

Major Retailers Commit to Zero-Carbon Ships by 2040

Some of the world’s biggest retailers have taken a significant step toward decarbonization, committing to zero-carbon ocean shipping by 2040.

Cargo ships are one of the world’s biggest polluters, yet they are a vital part of international trade. Multiple companies have worked to address the problem, but any real solution requires the retailers shipping products to be on board (pun intended).

It appears that some of the world’s largest retailers are doing just that, committing to using only cargo ships that use zero-carbon fuel by 2040. Amazon, IKEA, Patagonia and Michelin are just a few of the retailers involved in Cargo Owners for Zero Emissions Vehicles (COZEV).

“We recognize that reaching this goal requires the shipping industry to deploy new technologies and utilize zero-carbon shipping fuels that are not yet in widespread use,” the companies write. “By setting this target and signaling our dedication to decarbonize this part of our supply chains, we hope to inspire a surge in investment by ocean freight carriers and producers of zero-carbon shipping fuels. To satisfy our climate ambitions, investments should focus on solutions with the potential—either individually or in combination—to reach sufficient scale to truly decarbonize our supply chains by 2040 and the entire shipping industry by 2050 at the latest. As we evaluate potential solutions, we should also ensure they can become economically viable through collaboration across the supply chain and with appropriate policy support.”

  • Apple, Amazon, Google and Zigbee Alliance Partner to Establish Smart Home Device Open Standard

Apple, Amazon, Google and Zigbee Alliance Partner to Establish Smart Home Device Open Standard

Apple announced today that it is working with Amazon, Google and the Zigbee Alliance to form a working group that will establish open standards for smart home devices.

The group “plans to develop and promote the adoption of a new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet. Zigbee Alliance board member companies such as IKEA, Legrand, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy, and Wulian are also onboard to join the working group and contribute to the project.

“The goal of the Connected Home over IP project is to simplify development for manufacturers and increase compatibility for consumers. The project is built around a shared belief that smart home devices should be secure, reliable, and seamless to use. By building upon Internet Protocol (IP), the project aims to enable communication across smart home devices, mobile apps, and cloud services and to define a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification.”

The announcement comes on the heels of news the Amazon Echo has become the first non-Apple device to natively support Apple Podcasts, the latest in a series of moves indicating greater cooperation between the two companies. With tech companies—especially, Amazon and Google—under increasing scrutiny for what some perceive as anticompetitive behavior, the move toward greater compatibility is a welcome one.

  • Jennifer Lawrence and Boyfriend Buy a House

Actress Jennifer Lawrence and beau Nicholas Hoult reportedly bought a house in London, after looking at properties in the area for the past few weeks. Lawrence, 23, and Hoult, 24, met on the set of X-Men: First Class in 2011, and are again starring together in director Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Hoult’s sister Clarista commented that the couple also considered buying a property in Hampshire, where Hoult’s parents live, but settled on London, and now plan to decorate.

“It’s his first house,” Clarista said, adding, “He’s very excited and has been getting all his furniture from Ikea. Nick has been big into feng shui. In his room he has had branches, twigs with lights, the mattress and everything else on the floor, like water feathers and chairs, facing in the right direction.”

Lawrence and Hoult had been dating for two years before taking a break, and got back together during the latest X-Men production. A source said, “Jen loves the English way of life. As they are now serious again, it makes sense to look into buying somewhere.”

Here is a clip of Hoult and Lawrence as Beast and Mystique from X-Men: First Class:

In related news, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Singer is presently embroiled in a civil suit in which he is accused of having sex with an underage male in 1999. Former child actor Michael Egan named Singer as being involved in a string of underage sex parties, and filed a civil lawsuit. Singer has decided not to participate in the promotion of his new X-Men film, and commented, “Out of respect to all of the extraordinary contributions from the incredibly talented actors and crew involved, I’ve decided not to participate in the upcoming media events for the film. However, I promise when this situation is over, the facts will show this to be the sick twisted shakedown it is.”

  • IKEA to Sell Solar Panels to Customers in the UK

IKEA may be known for its moderately priced, Swedish-inspired furniture – but the company also devotes a large portion of their time to sustainability practices. And starting soon, the company will sell solar panels directly to customers in the UK.

Reuters reports that the panels should come to all of its 17 UK-based stores within the next 10 months. The panels are being manufactured in China, by the Hanergy Group.

The minimum investment customers will be able to make is an 18-panel unit, which will run 5,700 pounds ($9,230).

But IKEA is marketing this as a money-saver. Based on current UK subsidies for solar panel use and average energy savings, IKEA says that customers could save as much at 770 pounds a year. If that proved to be true, the solar panels could pay for themselves in under a decade.

“We know that our customers want to live more sustainably and we hope working with Hanergy to make solar panels affordable and easily available helps them do just that,” said IKEA’s Joanna Yarrow.

This move by IKEA shouldn’t be too much of a shocker, considering the company’s passionate focus on sustainability – evidenced by their annual report they’ve being publishing for the last few years.

“IKEA, drawing from its Swedish heritage and respect of nature, believes it can be a good business while doing good business and aims to minimize impacts on the environment,” says the company.

IKEA has already installed of 300,000 solar panels themselves, and this step is all about making the same technology available to their customers. The company has a lofty goal of being completely energy independent by the year 2020.

In other IKEA sustainability news – earlier this month, the IKEA Group announced that they were going to incorporate geothermal technology into the heating and cooling system at their new Kansas City store, set to open next year. IKEA has such geothermal systems installed in around 50 locations worldwide.

  • IKEA Uses Augmented Reality to Show You How Furniture Will Look in Your House

IKEA Uses Augmented Reality to Show You How Furniture Will Look in Your House

The new 2014 IKEA catalog app is debuting a new augmented reality feature that lets users see how certain pieces of furniture will look in their homes. All you have to do is scan one of the select item pages, throw your catalog on the floor and use your mobile device to project an image of what it will look like in your space.

“The 2014 IKEA catalogue gives you the ability to place virtual furniture in your own home with the help of augmented reality. Unlock the feature by scanning selected pages in the 2014 printed IKEA catalogue with the IKEA catalogue application (available for iOS and Android) or by browsing the pages in the digital 2014 IKEA catalogue on your smartphone or tablet. Then simply place the printed IKEA catalogue where you want to put the furniture in your room, choose a product from a selection of the IKEA range and see how it will look in your home!” says IKEA.

Now this is pretty cool. Check it out in action:

IKEA first started to experiment with augmented reality with last year’s catalog app, allowing users to unlock expanded content with their devices. But the ability to see products in your living spaces is entirely new for the Swedish furniture company, and it’s sure to make die-hard IKEA fanatics pretty happy.

You can grab the new 2014 IKEA catalog app on both iOS and Android.

  • IKEA Founder Ingvar Kamprad Steps Down, Leaves Son in Charge

Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA this week announced that company founder Ingvar Kamprad has stepped down from the company’s board of directors. As the 87-year-old Kamprad steps down, so has IKEA’s 70-year-old chairman, Per Ludvigsson. Kamprad’s son, Mathias Kamprad, has been appointed the new chairman of the board of Inter IKEA Holding SA.

“I feel honoured and excited about my new assignment as Chairman of the Board of Inter IKEA Group,” said Mathias Kamprad. “I am very much looking forward to working closer with Sören and his team.

“It is business as usual with the aim to become a bit better every day. Our main task will always be to ensure a long life for the IKEA Concept by keeping the needs of the many people in mind. As this will require investments in both good and bad times, the group strives to be financially independent.”

IKEA stated that Ludvigsson had been planning to retire for some years. The company also described the management changes as being part of a “generational shift” that had been planned for years.

“I am happy and proud that Mathias has accepted to become Chairman of the board of Inter IKEA Group after Per Ludvigsson had decided to retire,” said Ingvar Kamprad. “Mathias is well prepared for his new assignment. I am also happy that Hans Gydell has accepted to become vice chairman of the board.

“I see this as a good time for me to leave the board of Inter IKEA Group. By that we are also taking another step in the generation shift that has been ongoing for some years.”

  • IKEA Pillow Google Translates to ‘Cuddle Rape’

IKEA Pillow Google Translates to ‘Cuddle Rape’

What happens when you type the name of a certain style of pillow from IKEA into Google Translate?

    Well, something interesting, that’s what.

Redditor 3rxx noticed that the Google translation for the IKEA pillow collection “Gosa Raps” is “Cuddle Rape.” Yes, cuddle rape.

You can try it for yourself, it checks out.

Before you start to think that IKEA is attempting to imply something with their pillow names, this can all be explained quite easily. Really, it’s just a problem with Google Translate. “Gosa Raps” actually translates to “Cuddle Rapeseed.” Rapeseed, as you know, is a yellow flower of the mustard or cabbage family that is cultivated for its oils, what you and I know as Canola oil.

Turns out, IKEA’s Gosa line utilizes various flower names like the Gosa Hassel (Hazel) and Gosa Tulpan (Tulip).

So, we’ve learned that yes, IKEA product names are a bit odd. But they’re not promoting cuddle rape.

  • Those Aren’t Real Houses, Silly! Guy Throws Party in IKEA Demo Room

I’d be lying if I said I never thought about what it would be like to actually live in an IKEA. I think everyone has at some point. Dozens of different rooms decorated with stylish Scandinavian furniture, TVs, kitchens, and bathrooms – it’s all there!

This guy decided to make one of the demo rooms his own by staging an impromptu house party, complete with music, dancing, booze, and plenty of willing participants.

Of course, security had to break it up eventually. But what’s a good house party without the man trying to ruin all the fun?

The cabinets are fully customizable and come in a range of styles, sizes, and colors.

While IKEA is focused on delivering a modern sleek look to their TVs, retro televisions like the Philco Predicta are becoming the prized possessions of collectors across the nation.

The science and romance of the Predicta legend has been resurrected by Telstar; the company is currently manufacturing these beautiful TVs with new parts in the U.S.A.

I wish smart TVs in retro cabinets reached the mainstream market.
