GM Finally Begins Production of the Hummer SUV

General Motors has finally begun production of the Hummer SUV, over a year after production of the Hummer pickup began.

Once the poster child for excess fuel consumption and…well…just excess, GM relaunched the Hummer as an electric vehicle. In many ways the platform was the ideal option for an EV, since the size of the vehicle provides plenty of room for batteries.

While the pickup version of the new EV began production in late 2021, The Detroit News is reporting that the SUV variant has just begun production, with the first orders slated for delivery at the end of the first quarter.

“This is just, I think, the most sought-after vehicle in the world right now,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC and Buick. “It really is a super truck as we positioned it.”

  • GM Recalls Hummer and BrightDrop EV600 Over Battery Issue

GM Recalls Hummer and BrightDrop EV600 Over Battery Issue

General Motors (GM) is recalling two of its electric vehicles EVs) over an issue with their batteries.

GM relaunched the Hummer as an EV in 2021. The SUV’s size — one of the things that led to it originally becoming the quintessential gas-guzzler — made it the ideal platform to host the necessary batteries that power all EVs.

Unfortunately, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM has a problem with the seal on some battery packs in both the Hummer EV and the BrightDrop EV600:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 model year BrightDrop EV600 and 2022 to 2023 model year GMC Hummer vehicles. The high-voltage battery pack enclosure in some of these vehicles may not have been properly sealed. If the pack enclosure is not sealed, water can enter the pack.

The report states that GM is aware of at least three instances of water entering the battery packs. In two such cases, the vehicles failed to start, while the third lost power while driving. The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries as a result of the issue.

Owner notification is scheduled to begin next month.

Dealers will be notified on October 13, 2022. Owner interim notification is estimated to begin on November 28, 2022. GM will provide an estimate for owner remedy notification when one is available.

Hummer EV SUV Will Be Unveiled During NCAA Final Four

GM is planning to unveil its Hummer EV SUV during the NCAA Final Four, taking its Hummer reboot to the next level.

The Hummer was one of the brands GM retired in the midst of the company’s bankruptcy. The brand had achieved a degree of popularity, but ultimately came to represent the worst, unsustainable and environmentally unfriendly examples of the big SUVs that helped drive the American auto industry to the brink.

GM is in the process of reinventing the Hummer as an all-electric platform, which will help it avoid the shortcomings of its past and use its bulk to its advantage — the bigger the vehicle, the more batteries it can hold. Rather than being its own separate brand, the Humber will fall under GMC’s line.

The company is now planning to unveil the Hummer EV SUV during the NCAA Final Four, after previously unveiling the GMC Hummer EV “supertruck” during the Super Bowl.”

On April 3, 2021, tune into gmc.com at 5 p.m. EDT or the NCAA Final Four as GMC reveals the next chapter in its story – the GMC HUMMER EV SUV. Reservations will open for customers on that same date.

  • GM Bringing Back The Hummer—As An Electric Vehicle

GM Bringing Back The Hummer—As An Electric Vehicle

Few SUV designs are more recognizable as GM’s Hummer. Following its retirement in 2010, in the midst of GM’s bankruptcy, the company is bringing the iconic SUV back as an electric vehicle.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Hummer will not be its own brand as it was previously. Instead, it will be another model under the GMC line. GMC has increasingly become GM’s premium line and should be a good fit for the redesigned Hummer.

Moving the vehicle to an electric platform should also help Hummer avoid the criticism it faced the first time around. Weighing in at over 6,000 pounds and getting a mere 10 miles-per-gallon, the Hummer was a favorite target of environmentalists. The size of the vehicle will also give it plenty of space for batteries.

WSJ reports that GM has already enlisted Lebron James to help promote the new vehicle, including during a Super Bowl commercial next month. The combination of rugged looks, off-road performance and electric economy will likely prove to be a winning combo for the Detroit automaker.

  • Miami Beach Driver Causes Gas Pump Explosion

According to witnesses an impatient customer pulled in front of a yellow Hummer to cut in line. She apparently lost control of her Jeep, and slammed into the gas pump, causing the explosion. The incident was caught on surveillance cameras.

Gas station employees reacted quickly, and there were no reported injuries. There hasn’t been any word on any charges being filed.

The incident in Miami comes after recent reports of more mysterious types of explosions occurring in Minnesota.
