  • Netflix Lets Epix Deal Expire As Hulu Enters Multi-Year Agreement

Netflix Lets Epix Deal Expire As Hulu Enters Multi-Year Agreement

Netflix announced that it has decided not to renew an agreement in the US with cable network Epix, which means it is dropping a bunch of big-name movies from its offering. Hulu is picking up where Netflix left off, announcing a multi-year deal with the channel.

Netflix, anticipating user frustration, put out a blog post explaining its reasoning, and what it boils down to is basically a focus on putting out content that is exclusive to Netflix, and that includes “a robust slate of original movies” from stars and directors like Brad Pitt, Ricky Gervais, Judd Apatow, Angelina Jolie, Sofia Coppola, and Adam Sandler.

The movies from the Epix deal will expire on Netflix at the end of September. These include titles like Hunger Games: Catching Fire, World War Z, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Read this for titles Netflix is adding and dropping in September.

“While many of these movies are popular, they are also widely available on cable and other subscription platforms at the same time as they are on Netflix and subject to the same drawn out licensing period,” writes Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “Through our original films and some innovative licensing arrangements with the movie studios, we are aiming to build a better movie experience for you.”

Netlix’s slate of original movies includes: Beasts of No Nation (October), Ridiculous Six (December), A Very Murray Christmas (December), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Green Legend (Early 2016), and Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday (Early 2016).

“We also have some great family films coming your way, including Minions, Hotel Transylvania 2, and Home through arrangements with Sony Pictures Animation, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation,” Sarandos says. “Starting next year, we will be the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest theatrical movies from the The Walt Disney Company, including Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel movies. The majority of these films will arrive on Netflix faster than traditional arrangements had previously allowed.”

    That’s pretty huge.

Hulu’s deal will see the service adding new releases from Lionsgate, MGM, and Paramount beginning October 1. At launch, it will include Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek: Into Darkness, World War Z, Wolf of Wall Street, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Robocop, and God’s Not Dead. Read Hulu’s announcement for additional titles that it will get.

“Hulu already offers some of the best and biggest titles in television programming, but our subscribers have been asking us for more, and more recent, big movies. We listened. Through this new deal with Epix, we are proud to now be able to offer a huge selection of the biggest blockbusters and premium films,” said Craig Erwich, SVP, Head of Content at Hulu. “This is a landmark deal for Hulu and it marks a huge expansion for our offering of premium programming.”

“Hulu has become one of the most popular premium streaming services and Epix’s agreement is evidence of their understanding of the value that our blockbuster Hollywood films, deep library of classic film titles and original programming brings to consumers,” said Mark Greenberg, President and CEO of Epix. “We are excited to be partnering with Hulu, and share their commitment to providing viewers a truly premium experience, particularly as we enter the next phase of our network’s growth and development.”

Hulu will continue to roll out new titles, library films, and original programming from Epix through each year of the deal. All new theatrical releases and original programming will be available during its digital streaming window, which begins 90 days after the start of the traditional pay TV window.

  • Hulu May Let You Go Ad-Free for a Price

Hulu May Let You Go Ad-Free for a Price

One of life’s great annoyances (Why do I pay for Hulu but still have to sit through ads?) may be about to get mitigated. Kind of.

Hulu is reportedly thinking about offering ad-free streaming – but there’s a catch.

Netflix and Amazon Prime, for instance, offer ad-free streaming for all subscribers. Hulu’s plan, according to the Wall Street Journal, is to create another, more expensive tier for ad-free streaming.

    From the WSJ:

Hulu’s code name for the project is “NOAH,” which stands for “No Ads Hulu,” the people familiar with the matter said. One of the people said the ad-free option could launch as early as this fall and be priced at around $12 to $14 a month.

Such a price point, relatively high in the streaming world, would show that Hulu and its owners don’t want to encourage large numbers of existing subscribers to shift to the new ad-free service.

That’s $4 to $6 more than Hulu’s regular subscription service, and $2 to $4 more expensive than Netflix.

It’s clear that Hulu wants to explore all options in how to compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, and other streaming platforms. The company has been making a lot of moves to produce original content and land high-profile exclusives as of late.

But would you pay $14 a month for Hulu? That’s dicey.

  • South Park Deal Cost Hulu a Record $192 Million

South Park Deal Cost Hulu a Record $192 Million

South Park will be on the air for at least five more seasons, through 2019.

Today, Comedy Central announced the show had been extended by three seasons and 30 episodes – through 23 seasons and 304 episodes. The 19th season is set to premiere on September 16th.

“‘South Park’ remains the bedrock of Comedy Central and we are thrilled that new episodes will continue to entertain audiences for years to come,” said Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless. “The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at nearly 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans.”

And apparently Hulu agrees. In a separate, but related deal, South Park Digital Studios also agreed to extend its deal with Hulu for all additional seasons and new episodes. This is an extension of an exclusive deal, first signed in July of last year.

So, how much did Hulu pay to be the only place you can stream South Park?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a record amount. Apparently, Hulu paid Viacom $192 million for the next five years of shows, as well as the keep the current 254 episodes on its service exclusively.

That’s $32 million more than Hulu paid to acquire the SVOD rights to Seinfeld back in April.

New episodes of South Park will continue to be made available on Hulu a day after airing.

  • Aaron Paul’s Next TV Gig Is a New Hulu Drama

Aaron Paul’s Next TV Gig Is a New Hulu Drama

No, despite what you may have heard, Aaron Paul is not reprising his role as Jesse Pinkman in a Breaking Bad spinoff. That was just a joke. But the actor is returning to the small screen – on Hulu.

Paul will star opposite Michelle Monaghan in the new Hulu drama The Way, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show, from Parenthood‘s Jason Katims and Jessica Goldberg will “examine a family at the center of a controversial faith-based movement struggling with relationships, marriage and power. Each hourlong episode will take an in-depth look at what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want.”

You can expect the show to start production this summer and land on Hulu in the winter. There will be 10 episodes in the first season.

    More plot points from THR:

Paul will portray Eddie Cleary, a supportive husband and long-time member of The Way. Having grown up in a troubled blue-collar household, The Way was his way out. Recently returned from a retreat with other members of movement, Eddie is distant and emotionless, distraught from what he witnessed on the trip. His wife (played by Michelle Monaghan) believes he is having an affair, but Eddie is really sneaking off to meet with a still unknown person who claims to know “the truth” about The Way. Doing his best to keep up appearances and continue to lead his family by following The Way’s teachings, Eddie must face a truth that might destroy everything he believes in.

This past weekend, Paul sent the internet wild with speculation when he tweeted about a “top secret” project.

He later took to Periscope to reveal the Jesse Pinkman-focused Breaking Bad spinoff. Of course, that wound up being a joke. A really mean joke, at that.

While The Way won’t assuage heartbroken BB fans, it does have a lot of star power behind it and is a big project for Hulu.

That’s Hulu, not Hulu Plus. Hulu Plus is no more, as Hulu just made the decision to put everything – it’s free and paid subscription services – under the ‘Hulu’ umbrella.

Aaron Paul has also worked with Netflix. The second season of the critical hit BoJack Horseman hits the streaming platform next month.

  • 19 Kids and Counting Cut by Hulu Amid Scandal

19 Kids and Counting Cut by Hulu Amid Scandal

If you try going to the Hulu site page for 19 Kids and Counting, you get a 404 error. There is nothing on the page.

In the wake of the Josh Duggar scandal, Hulu has quietly taken the show off its website. You can find episodes listed in search results, but they do not load.

The company has made no statement about why they made this move, but most guess that it is directly related to the Josh Duggar molestation scandal. Josh Duggar issued a statement to the public when news surfaced that he had molested five girls, including four who are said to be his own sisters.

“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.”

“I would do anything to go back to those teen years and take different actions. I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life. In my life today, I am so very thankful for God’s grace, mercy and redemption.”

Josh Duggar resigned from his position at the Family Research Council as a result of the news of the molestations surfacing.

TLC, the network that carries 19 Kids and Counting, had already pulled currently-airing reruns from its schedule, but had stopped short of canceling the upcoming season of the show.

There has also been news that TLC is looking at a spin-off program that just stars the sisters on the show.

  • Seinfeld Hits Hulu on June 24

Seinfeld Hits Hulu on June 24

Last month, Hulu paid a fortune for the streaming rights to everyone’s favorite show about nothing, Seinfeld.

Now, Hulu has finally given us a premiere date. Every single episode of the classic sitcom will be available on Hulu starting June 24.

If you’ve never seen Seinfeld, here’s the most accurate yet completely misleading summary of all time, provided by Hulu:

Jerry Seinfeld stars as a stand-up comedian whose life in New York City is made even more chaotic by his quirky group of friends who join him in wrestling with life’s most perplexing, yet often trivial questions. Often described as “a show about nothing,” Seinfeld mines the humor in life’s mundane situations like waiting in line, searching for a lost item, or the trials and tribulations of dating. Co-starring are Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Jerry’s ex-girlfriend and current platonic pal, Elaine Benes; Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Jerry’s neurotic hard-luck best friend; and Michael Richards as Jerry’s eccentric neighbor, Kramer.

Nobody is exactly sure what Hulu paid for Seinfeld, but reports estimate between $130 and $180 million. Netflix paid about $120 million for the entirety of Friends.

So, if you’re done with that, Seinfeld is waiting for you on Hulu. All 180 episodes.

  • Mindy Kaling Show, ‘The Mindy Project’ Heads to Hulu for Season 4

Mindy Kaling Show, ‘The Mindy Project’ Heads to Hulu for Season 4

Mindy Kaling has just learned that Hulu has saved her show–The Mindy Project–from its demise. Just a week after Fox cancelled the show, Hulu announced it had ordered the fourth season of the show from Universal Television.

Twenty-six new episodes of The Mindy Project will air during season four, providing Mindy Kaling fans with the perfect opportunity to find out how the season three finale cliffhanger turns out. A pregnant Mindy Kaling and her boyfriend Danny (played by Chris Messina) were having some trouble after he told her he didn’t want to get married. Might season four find Danny experiencing a change of heart?

Mindy Kaling shared her excitement over the Hulu deal in a statement.

“I am thrilled The Mindy Project has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show,” she said. “It’s such an exciting place to be.”

In addition to Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project stars Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz, Beth Grant, and Xosha Roquemore.

Do you subscribe to Hulu? Will you be checking out The Mindy Project there when season four premieres?

Did you watch Mindy Kaling when she starred in The Office, or is The Mindy Project your first exposure to the actress?

  • Mindy Kaling Teases About Whether Her Show Is Really Over

Mindy Kaling Teases About Whether Her Show Is Really Over

Mindy Kaling may be up to something. Figuring out what that is could be the tough part.

Mindy Kaling’s show, The Mindy Project, was canceled this week. That news came as a stunner to her fans who tuned in every week to see their favorite girl as Mindy Lahiri.

But then Mindy Kaling posted a short video to Instagram that seemed to poke fun at the news that her show had been canned. In the video (posted below) she gives the camera a big wink. The caption says, “Hey guys, I’m in Montana, is anything happening in LA?”

She also captioned with the hashtag #themindyproject. Fans commented that this was some sort of tease that her show may not be entirely gone. Time will tell if there is anything to that, but some had guesses.

“she knows what’s up…. Moving to the Hulu fo sho”

“So many people loves MINDY! I’ll follow wherever you go! I might end up subscribing to HuLu”

Hey guys, I'm in Montana, is anything happening in LA? #themindyproject

A video posted by Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling) on

But Mindy Kaling did do the InStyle cover for June. In the interview that accompanied the piece, she revealed that she is still a pretty well-grounded person. Still, she has her “diva moments.”

“My diva moments are more tied to panicky worry,” Kaling, 35, says. “[My assistant] will have prepared everything for a day and then that morning, I wake up and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to do any of that; it has to be completely different.’ But I don’t throw hairbrushes at people or anything like that. I haven’t gotten there yet.”

Yet, she also says she is very influenced by what she sees other people wearing.

“I think I’m very susceptible [to other people’s style],” she says. “We’ll have someone like Laura Dern on the show, and I’ll see what she’s wearing, and I’m just like, ‘OK, well, that’s obviously the way you should dress.’ Or I’ll meet some cool actress who only wears Helmut Lang and Vince, and I’m like ‘Ugh! That looks amazing and chic and everything coordinates with everything and I need to get, like, a ratty T-shirt.’ I love fashion and I love clothes.”

Much to her fans’ delight, she expounded on the nature of her relationship with B.J. Novak.

“I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell,” she says. “He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend. I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status.”

  • Mindy Kaling’s TV Show Gets Canceled By Fox But Hulu Might Pick It Up

Mindy Kaling’s TV Show Gets Canceled By Fox But Hulu Might Pick It Up

After months of speculation, Fox finally cancels the The Mindy Project.

Reports say that Mindy Kaling’s comedy series won’t be picked up for a fourth season at Fox.

The series, about a successful doctor who dreams of getting her personal and romantic life on track, was already facing an uncertain future.

The network considers the show’s ratings not up to broadcast standards, despite a cult following and strong online viewing and social media presence.

However, there’s still hope for loyal viewers who are dying to know what will happen next to the show’s protagonist and its cliffhanger ending.

Sources report that Universal Television is currently in talks with Hulu, which is said to be keen on taking on the Mindy Project for “multiple additional seasons.”

For a lot of people who believe the show might be better served if it’s in a digital platform, Hulu is the perfect choice for a new home.

The online streaming service already carries past seasons of the Mindy Project and is also dead set on expanding its original lineup with series like J.J Abrams’ 11/22/63 and Jason Reitman’s Casual.

However, Hulu and Fox have remained tight-lipped about the news, neither confirming any cancellations or renewals.

But the Internet is not taking the news of the cancellation lightly.

Eonline.com has asked fans to help save the Mindy Project with an article listing 11 reasons why another network (like Hulu) should save the show.

    The website also wrote:

“Dear Fellow Fans: Let’s Tweet and Facebook and Snapchat and carrier pigeon this story to everyone you know, asking them to share it with the hashtag #HuluSaveMindy. Let’s get it trending so Hulu hears us loud and clear!”

But even before this call to action appeared, fans have already started to vent their anger at Fox on Twitter, while imploring Hulu to pick up their favorite show.

  • ‘Myst’ TV Show Coming to Hulu

‘Myst’ TV Show Coming to Hulu

Remember all those frustrating hours trying to figure out what the hell to do in Myst?

Well, get ready to relive those frustrating moments on TV, as Hulu has apparently landed the streaming rights to an upcoming show based on the classic 90s game.

According to Deadline, the show is penned by Divergent writer Evan Daugherty.

Myst blends elements of science fiction and fantasy. It will explore the origins of the island of Myst from the game where a man wakes up on a mystery island with absolutely no idea who he is, where is, or how he got there.

Not much to go on there, but you know, it is Myst.

The show was first greenlit in October of last year, when Legendary TV & Digital Media singed a deal with Cyan Worlds (Myst‘s original developers). If you were wondering, the show will likely feature a tie-in game.

“Cyan’s goal in working with Legendary is not just to create a compelling TV drama but to develop a true transmedia product that will include a companion video game that extends the story across both media,” Cyan said last year. “Seventy percent of tablet owners use their device while watching TV at least several times a week. Cyan sees the potential to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling to a new level.”

Myst was first released in 1993. In the game, players naviagte a mysterious island called Myst. It’s a puzzle game, and players must find clues to progress. Myst was the best-selling PC game of all time until it was dethroned by The Sims in 2002.

  • Walking Dead Spinoff Will Land Exclusively on Hulu

Walking Dead Spinoff Will Land Exclusively on Hulu

When the first season of AMC’s upcoming Walking Dead companion series Fear the Walking Dead wraps up, the only place you’ll be able to stream it online is Hulu.

Hulu has announced a major partnership with AMC Networks that will give it exclusive SVOD rights to “new and upcoming primetime scripted comedy and drama series” from networks like AMC, IFC, BBC, Sundance, and WE tv.

“Hulu announced a groundbreaking, multi-year deal with AMC Networks Inc. for the exclusive SVOD rights to new and upcoming primetime scripted comedy and drama series from AMC, IFC, BBC America, Sundance TV and WE tv. The new agreement will make Hulu the exclusive streaming home to the highly anticipated companion series to The Walking Dead, titled: Fear the Walking Dead. Through the deal, Hulu will – over time – become the SVOD home to a diverse and comprehensive collection of AMC Networks Inc.-produced content,” said the company. “Hulu will also become the streaming home for a significant number of films from the IFC Films collection.”

Fear the Walking Dead falls into that category.

Of course, “new and upcoming” means that Hulu will not be the exclusive home for currently-airing and past AMC hits like The Walking Dead, Mad Men, or Breaking Bad. Fear the Walking Dead has a lot of buzz surrounding it, due to the immense popularity of The Walking Dead, so it’s a nice get for Hulu.

But the true value of this deal depends a lot on the quality of AMC’s new shows. The better and more popular they are, the cooler this is for Hulu.

Hulu scored another big content grab – and it cost them a pretty penny. Hulu will now be the exclusive home for the entire Seinfeld collection – a deal that cost them upwards of $180 million.

Fear the Walking Dead is due out this summer.

  • Seinfeld Is Coming to Hulu, and It’s Not Coming Cheap

Seinfeld Is Coming to Hulu, and It’s Not Coming Cheap

No official announcement from Hulu yet, but multiple outlets are reporting that the third-most-talked-about online streaming platform has possibly made itself more attractive to subscribers – by snagging Seinfeld.

For years, Seinfeld has remained a streaming holdout – never appearing on Netflix, Amazon Prime, or any other major player. Of course, you could always watch Seinfeld on TBS – whenever it aired. Or, you can currently watch Seinfeld (legally) on Crackle. There, you can watch about a dozen or so free episodes at any given time, and they rotate in and out fairly consistently.

But Seinfeld coming to Hulu will mean that the entire series is available to stream for the first time ever.

The Wall Street Journal says that the deal values each episodes at $700,000. Variety puts the total value of the deal at near $180 million. That’s more than $60 million more than Netflix paid for Friends.

Hulu wasn’t the only SVOD company in the running as both Yahoo and Amazon expressed interest. Last summer Jerry Seinfeld said that “conversations” were taking place to bring Seinfeld to Netflix but that never materialized.

Seinfeld is a huge show – one of the most-watched of all time. And grabbing the exclusive streaming rights is a big headline. But is Seinfeld a big enough draw to get people to sign up for Hulu Plus?

Empire Lands Exclusively at Hulu (Current and Future Episodes)

If you’re looking to stream FOX’s new hit drama Empire, you’re going to have to go to Hulu.

Through a deal with Twentieth Century Fox, Hulu has snagged the exclusive streaming rights to the show – both current and future episodes. New episodes will pop up on Hulu one day after they air on FOX.

“Today, Hulu is very proud to announce that we are investing in Empire’s IPO, and we think it’s gonna be huge. Take that, Boo Boo Kitty. In a new deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, Hulu becomes the exclusive SVOD home to TV’s biggest hit of the year…airing current AND future episodes.”

“‘Empire’s’ storylines and music continue to dominate the popular culture conversation each week,” said Craig Erwich, senior VP and head of content at Hulu. “Since its premiere, the series has remained one of the top shows on Hulu, and we are ecstatic to be the exclusive streaming home to the biggest show of the year.”

Empire has become broadcast television’s number one show. Wednesday night’s two-hour finale grabbed 16.7 viewers and a 6.5 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo. When you just look at the 9pm hour, it saw a whopping 17.6 million viewers. In fact, Empire‘s ratings consistently grew week-to-week all season.

Part of what makes the show so appealing is the music, and the soundtrack has debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

With popularity like that, Empire is a pretty good get for Hulu.

  • CSI Heads to Hulu in First Streaming Deal for Show

CSI Heads to Hulu in First Streaming Deal for Show

Beginning in early April, you’ll be able to stream over 300 episodes of CBS’ long-running crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on Hulu Plus.

This is the first time that CSI has ever been licensed to a streaming video on-demand service.

“CSI is one of the most popular television franchises in the world and we could not be more thrilled to make all episodes available to Hulu subscribers,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content, Hulu. “This deal not only represents a huge growth in our offering of premium content, but it also represents an expansion in our partnership with CBS. We look forward to working with CBS to continue making some of the best shows on television available for viewers to stream on more screens in the future.”

Hulu will add full past seasons ahead of new series premieres.

Hulu and CBS first partnered up in 2012, giving the SVOD company over 2,600 episodes of current and classic CBS content. Last year, the two expanded that deal.

“The original series from the most successful franchise in television history has been licensed to the SVOD market for the first time,” said Scott Koondel, Chief Corporate Content Licensing Officer for CBS Corporation. “This agreement and previous deals with our partners at Hulu further validates how well CBS procedural dramas perform on subscription services. And, at a time when the CBS Television Network is getting ready to premiere the next generation of the CSI franchise with CSI: Cyber, it’s very exciting to make available all 14 seasons of the show that started it all to Hulu subscribers and CSI’s passionate fan base.”

  • Netflix in Hotels? Marriott Tests New TV Service

Netflix in Hotels? Marriott Tests New TV Service

Vacancy. Indoor Pool. Free … Netflix?

The Marriott hotel chain is testing new video offerings in a handful of locations. The new TV service apparently allows guests to stream Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora in their rooms.

“We have invited leading technology companies and content providers to work with us to design the next wave in in-room entertainment focusing on on-demand programming,” Marriott spokesman John Wolf told Bloomberg. “We are currently offering guests in eight test hotels the opportunity to stream their content through our high-definition TVs whether it is Netflix, Hulu or Pandora.”

According to some Twitter users who have seen the new system in action, it looks like you have to log in with your own Netflix or Hulu account. Marriott just provides the interface on its in-room TVs.

Of course, as long as you have your laptop/iPad and Wi-Fi, you could just stream Netflix yourself – without Marriott’s help. But this new system allows you to stream Netflix in all its HD, big-screen glory. Plus, access to reliable Wi-Fi is not a guarantee – especially when we’re talking about Marriott.

This is just a test and it’s possible that the structure of the service could shift. Instead of letting people log-in to their own Netflix accounts, hotels could provide generic access. It could be built into the cost of the room, or Netflix access could be a separate add-on. Netflix could get a piece of that action.

It’s easy to imagine a future where hotels tout Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime as premium offerings to attract guests. And if you’re Netflix, why wouldn’t you want to be inside millions of hotel rooms across the world?

It’ll be interesting to see how quickly Marriott expands this “test” and if other hotel chains jump on board. I’m guessing the answers to those questions are very, and you bet.

  • Hulu Acquires ‘Fargo’ And Other MGM Content

Hulu Acquires ‘Fargo’ And Other MGM Content

Hulu announced that it has acquired exclusive streaming rights to hit television series (or mini-series, if you prefer..it was renewed for a second season) Fargo.

The acquisition comes as part of an expansion of Hulu’s relationship with MGM, and it also includes all episodes of History’s Vikings as well as multi-year, non-exclusive licensing rights to over 1,500 episodes of MGM series including Stargate Universe, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate: SG-1, Flipper, Green Acres, Addams Family, Thirtysomething, Dead Like me, and All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Fargo won three Emmys, and is nominated for five Golden Globes.

“MGM has been our longtime partner and is a consistent distributor of premium content. This expanded agreement allows us to become the streaming home to one of this year’s biggest and most critically acclaimed series, Fargo. After announcing our landmark output deal with FX Productions yesterday, this expanded partnership with MGM brings even more hit titles to Hulu,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content at Hulu.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Hulu and proud to continue to offer exceptional programming from MGM including the Golden Globe nominated and Emmy award winning series Fargo, continued fan-favorite Vikings as well as classic titles from MGM’s vast library,” said John Bryan, MGM President of Domestic Television Distribution.

The deal is certainly a blow to Netflix, which lost out to FX on the show in the first place. In fact, Netflix and Hulu seem to be battling it out for FX content these days. While Netflix carries shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, Louie, Sons of Anarchy, and American Horror Story, Hulu also announced another deal for more FX content this week.

Hulu’s deal includes The Strain, Tyrant, Married and You’re the Worst, Man Seeking Woman, The Comedians, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, Taboo, and Baskets.

All episodes of the first season of Fargo will be available for streaming on Hulu in 2015. All episodes of the first two seasons of Vikings are currently available.

  • Hulu Signs Deal for a Bunch of FX Shows

Hulu Signs Deal for a Bunch of FX Shows

Hulu and Twentieth Century Fox have just signed a deal that will bring a boatload of FX content to the streaming platform.

The deal is multi-faceted, giving Hulu exclusive rights to current FX shows, future seasons of those current shows, as well as the SVOD rights to future FX Productions content.

Here’s all the FX content coming to Hulu over the next year or so:

A few titles from FX and FXX that will be available to stream exclusively on Hulu include Tyrant, The Strain, Married and You’re the Worst – all of which debuted their first seasons this year and have garnered buzz from critics and fans alike. The first seasons will be available for Hulu subscribers to stream in advance of their second season premieres in 2015, and all subsequent seasons will be available to watch on Hulu after they air.

Additionally, you can look forward to streaming future comedy, drama and event series from FX Productions exclusively on Hulu. Titles that will be exclusive to Hulu subscribers after their first seasons include:

Man Seeking Woman – a comedy series starring Jay Baruchel premiering January 14, 2015 on FXX
The Comedians – a comedy series starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad that is set to premiere on FX in 2015
Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll – a new FX drama series starring Denis Leary and John Corbett
Taboo – a period drama series from award-winning Executive Producer Ridley Scott that will star Tom Hardy and will premiere on FX
Baskets – a highly anticipated comedy series starring Zach Galifianakis produced by Louis C.K. and Galifianakis that will debut in 2016

In addition to FX and FXX Networks’ upcoming original series, Hulu is also now the exclusive streaming home to FOX’s upcoming event series Wayward Pines. The series hails from the talented M. Night Shyamalan and will star big names like Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard and Melissa Leo. It will make its network debut on FOX on May 14, 2015 and Hulu will be the exclusive subscription streaming destination to watch new episodes the day after they air.

“FX Productions shares the same commitment to creating and distributing distinctive, high quality programming that we do here at Hulu. We are thrilled to begin this partnership, which will add a wide variety of popular series, and fresh, yet-to-air series to our ever expanding roster of great content,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President, Head of Content Hulu.

Earlier this week, Hulu announced that it had acquired the SVOD rights to Resurrection, Mistresses, and Devious Maids through a licensing agreement with Disney-ABC Television.

Hulu announced that it has entered into a partnership with Discovery which will see it become the exclusive subscription video on-demand home to Deadliest Catch. It’s the first ong-form content partnership between the two.

The agreement will also see Hulu getting various shows from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science, Destination America and original Spanish-language content from Discovery en Español. Hulu said in a blog post:

Along with Deadliest Catch, we are also adding titles from Discovery’s U.S. portfolio to Hulu over the next year. That includes popular series such as MythBusters, The Little Couple, Say Yes to the Dress, Treehouse Masters and How It’s Made.

Hulu has been making a lot of significant content announcements including that it will revive the recently canceled Selfie, and host original shows from Amy Poehler and Jason Reitman.

‘Selfie’, Recently Canceled, Will Finish Up the Season on Hulu

You’re probably not going to get a second season of Selfie, but at least you’ll be able to finish out the current season

Despite some positive reviews, ABC canceled its freshman comedy earlier this month. According to the network, it was a ratings issue. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “the series opened to a mediocre 5.3 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-to-49.” And things just went south from there.

The series, which stars Karen Gillan and John Cho, aired its last episode on November 11. Now, the answer to the question of where the remaining, already-shot episodes will land is clear – Hulu.

    Here’s confirmation from the showrunner:

The first of six remaining episodes will hit Hulu and ABC.com on Tuesday, and a new one will be released each week for the next five weeks.

At least Selfie fans will have some sort of closure.

Hulu Orders Amy Poehler-Produced ‘Difficult People’

Hulu announced today that it has given a straight-to-series order for Difficult People, a new Hulu Original series executive produced by Amy Poehler and starring Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner.

    The description is as follows:

Difficult People hails from Julie Klausner (Billy on the Street) who stars alongside Emmy-nominated Billy on the Street host Billy Eichner. As best friends living in New York City, their typical, irreverent behavior lands them in some very awkward situations. Klausner wrote the pilot and will also serve as an executive producer for the series.

This follows recent announcements of Casual, from Jason Reitman and 11/22/63 based on the Stephen King novel.

“I tend to enjoy funny people creating and starring in comedy programs, and Julie and Billy are the funniest around,” said Poehler.

“Amy Poehler, Billy Eichner, and Julie Klausner are a dream team of comedic possibilities. We look forward to bringing this hilarious view of the world to Hulu with our partners at Universal Cable Productions,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content, Hulu.

Other recent pick-ups for Hulu include Hunters, Childhood’s End and Magicians at Syfy; and Colony, Stanistan and Mr. Robot at USA.
