  • Annie Lennox’s Daughter, Tali, Survives Kayaking Accident; Boyfriend Missing

Tali Lennox-Fruchtmann’s boyfriend, Ian Jones, is still missing after a kayaking accident on the Hudson River on Saturday, August 8.

Tali Lennox Fruchtmann is a model/visual artist who goes by the name Tali Lennox. She is the daughter of Eurythmics singer, Annie Lennox, who is famous for her 80s new wave hit song “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”.

In a press release, Capt. John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sherrif’s Office said that Lennox, 22, and Jones, 32, were separated when a strong current tipped over their kayak. Lennox was rescued by a passing vessel but her boyfriend, Jones, was reported missing.

Watterson said that they are doing their best and are using all the resources they have to find Jones.

“Once the initial responding Deputies confirmed that Mr. Jones may still be in the water, Marine Patrols and Dive Teams from the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies immediately responded to begin searching the river,” read an official statement from the office of the Sheriff.

“Mr. Jones has not been located, and the search is expected to be suspended sometime tonight. The size of the search area and the conditions on the river have made the search difficult up to this point, and both will be reevaluated tomorrow to determine if the search can continue;” the Sherrif’s statement continued.

The authorities were certain that there is no foul play in the said incident. However, the investigation revealed that the couple was not wearing life preservers when they went kayaking.

Tali Lennox was examined right after the accident and only suffered minor injuries.

A description of Jones was released to hasten the investigation. Jones stands at 6’3” and is described to have a slim build and has dark hair. He was wearing denim pants and a denim shirt when the accident happened.

  • ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ Remembered 5 Years On

USAirways Flight 1549 landed into the Hudson River five years ago after being struck by birds. Images of passengers exiting the plane are still reminiscent today. Fortunately, the quick-thinking ingenuity of Pilots Sully Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles led to the safe landing and rescue of the passengers aboard the plane. The passengers still remember the chain of events that led to the horrific landing and ultimate rescue.

According to Dave Sanderson, who was the final passenger to exit Flight 1549 on the fateful day, “I shouldn’t be here right now man. I mean everything was going against us. And everything turned out right. I looked out for a lifeboat and I jumped into the water and swam for the closest boat I could find. The entire movie of my life passed before my eyes. I saw when I was in little league baseball, my family, my kids were born, and then you put your head down for that last time when you’re ready for impact, and it’s like, ‘OK, I have no control. I gotta give it up.’”

During a recent interview with CBS, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III spoke about the unusual and memorable event. “We were suddenly confronted with something we hadn’t anticipated, had never specifically trained for.” Sullenberger said before adding, “We have much to be thankful for.”

Janis Krums was traveling on a commuter ferry when the flight landed on the Hudson River, and he took a picture with his iPhone before uploading to Twitter. The image is now known throughout the world and serves as an iconic depiction of the miraculous event. Krums spoke with CNN about the image that captured the attention of viewers around the world. When asked to explain the most favorite photograph that he had ever taken, Krums responded, “I would say that the Miracle on the Hudson wins by a large margin. It’s an iconic image of an incredible event. What Sully was able to accomplish is truly a miracle.”

  • Chesley Sullenberger Forever Linked to Twitter

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since US Airway pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed a jet carrying 155 passengers onto the Hudson River. The emergency crash landing was needed after a flock of geese blew out both engines. It’s also hard to believe that just one single captivating event helped to launch Twitter as one the most popular sites in internet history and a multi-billion dollar publicly traded company.

Can we even imagine a world without “Twitter reaction,” or “celebrity Twitter feuds?” Five years ago, Twitter was just a run of the mill social media site. Today we know it as the be all end all of connecting with internet friends and having the amazing opportunity to communicate with everyone from Beyonce to Howard Stern.

It appears that a single tweet posted by Janis Krums helped to spark the popularity of Twitter. It was tweeted seconds after Sullenberger made his emergency crash landing. Krums took the picture on his iPhone from a commuter ferry that was racing to the airplane in an attempt to rescue the plane’s passengers and crew.

Krums then tweeted about what happened along with a picture, now known as a Twitpic, to his 170 followers. The iconic image he captured is what many of us think of when we hear the term, “The Miracle on the Hudson.” Krums’ post is considered one of the most famous tweets ever.

Krums was interviewed by MSNBC just 32 minutes after posting the tweet. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey spoke of how significant the moment was to launching his company, “Suddenly the world turned its attention because we were the source of news—and it wasn’t us, it was this person in the boat using the service, which is even more amazing.”‘

In a recent interview with CNN, Krums who is currently the CEO/co-founder of Opprtunity.com, was asked about how the Twitpic directly linked to his success in business. He responded, “It’s been a great story when I talk to people about technology. I’ve gotten some incredible opportunities to speak at such places as Columbia Journalism School and the Poynter Institute. I’m involved with technology, so I actually became an adviser to Rawporter.com. Their mission is to protect, promote and sell photos and videos from everyday people.”

Krums sent out a tweet today commemorating the fifth anniversary of the miraculous landing.

Attack In Riverside Park: 5 People Wounded

An attack occurred this morning in Riverside Park, which is located along the Hudson River on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The suspect has been identified as Julius Graham, who is 43 years old. He was armed with a pair of scissors and is obviously emotionally disturbed, as he slashed five people early this morning, including a father and his toddler. The police reported that he was carrying identification on him that said he was from Texas, but was reported to have been living in a homeless shelter in New York City, as recently as a week ago.

Attacks continue to occur all over this country, and while this time it wasn’t even a gunman, it is still a very serious incident. Who could have predicted someone stabbing people in a park with scissors? It just goes to show that people are not getting enough help, and as a result they act out and attack people. According to The New York Times, the seemingly random rampage just before 8 a.m. near 65th Street and Riverside Park South, and the attack lasted under 10 minutes. The rampage began when Graham approached a 36 year old woman jogging on a path and stabbed her in the back, who was the most seriously injured victim in the attack.

The attack continued until he hit a man and his toddler, prompting a bystander to come to his rescue and wrestle the suspect to the ground. He kept him subdued until the police were able to arrive on the scene at 8:04 a.m. Riverside Park, which stretches four miles from 72nd to 158th Streets along the Hudson River, had to be shut down all morning, in order to allow police officers canvass the area for witnesses.

Police commissioner Raymond Kelly says that all of the victims are expected to survive. USA Today mentions that aside from the toddler, who is one-and-a-half, all of the other victims were in their 30’s. Martin Speechley, a detective with the New York Police Department, said that the park is normally a very safe area. The attack was completely unexpected and shocking for everyone around. All of the victims were taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. The suspect was sent to Bellevue Hospital, and is getting ready to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to NY 1 News.

  • NYC Issues Warning to Cyclists: Robbers Afoot

A CBS local affiliate is reporting out of New York that a gang of thugs is targeting lone bike riders along the Hudson river and across the George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights, choosing to strike when it’s dark and there is little chance of anyone seeing.

Cyclist Keith Cho, the rider pictured, was riding his bike on the evening of August 24 when he ran into a clothesline booby trap that was nearly impossible to see. The robbers then set upon him with brass knuckles and took his possessions: his bike, a phone, and the money in his wallet. Since the incident, Cho has felt deeply traumatized. “I lived in this area for 35 years and for the first time in my life, I feel afraid to come to the city… They could’ve just taken my bike and just went off. I was in no condition to chase them or go after them,” he said to reporters in the CBS video.

Cho would not be the last cyclist targeted. Last Thursday, a second cyclist was knocked off his bike with a bat in the same area, his wallet and bike also stolen. Sections of the Washington Heights cycling path are pitch black, and Cho has said it’s nearly impossible to see if anyone else is out there, let alone if there’s a clothesline in the path.

One woman who lives in the area spoke with CBS reporters about the possibility of incidents happening around the area. “If something happens,” resident Susan Hurse said to the cameras, “no one can see you… You could be there for a couple of days in the brush without someone finding you.”

Vague descriptions of 20-something men accompany increased NYPD patrols in the area in an effort to apprehend the crooks, who are believed to be targeting the cycling path to acquire high-end bikes for easy resale.

  • Hudson River: Body Of Best Man Found After Crash

The body of 30-year old Mark Lennon, the best man in a wedding party that was part of a horrific boat crash on the Hudson on Saturday, has been found in the water.

The accident–which occurred when the group’s speedboat hit a construction barge–also took the life of bride-to-be Lindsay Stewart, who was thrown overboard. The groom-to-be, 35-year old Brian Bond, has been hospitalized with critical injuries and is due to go into surgery today. The couple weren’t set to get married until August, but were out on the river with friends to celebrate the upcoming event. The man driving the boat, 35-year old Jojo K. John, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and assault as police believe he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

‘‘I don’t think you can put words to what we have to tell these families,’’ Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said after Lennon’s body was found Sunday morning.

The barge–which holds equipment for construction crews working on the Tappan Zee–was reportedly equipped with lighting at the time of the accident, but more lights have been added over the weekend. Officials say they are conducting an investigation into whether or not the lighting was a factor in the accident.

The Tappan Zee was the scene of another tragic accident last week, when a 69-year old man drove the wrong way on the bridge and hit another car hit on, killing the passenger inside. The wreck caused a pileup on the bridge in which several others were injured.

  • Hudson River Boating Accident Is A Tragedy

A tragic accident occurredon the Hudson River when a boat crashed into a parked construction barge near Tappan Zee Bridge.

The boat was carrying a wedding party of six that included the bride, groom and best man. The bride, Lindsey Stewart, and best man, Mark Lennon, were thrown from the boat during the crash. The Rockland County Sheriff’s Chief William Barbera informed CNN that they had found the body of Lindsay Stewart approximately 600 feet from the river bank. The best man has still not been found. Police are suspending the search for the night, but will continue their search in the morning. The groom, Brian Bond, survived the crash, along with three others, but he is currently suffering from a fractured eye socket. It is believed that only two members of the wedding party were wearing life jackets at the time.

Swewart’s mother, Carol Stewart-Kosik said through tear-filled eyes, “Lindsey was getting married two weeks from today. Now her and the best man both are missing. She continued on saying, “They just went out for a nice night on the river. “I can’t talk about it. I’m sorry.”

JoJo K John, the driver of the boat, is being charged with one count of vehicular man slaughter and three counts of vehicular assault. Police believe that John was drinking prior to the accident which may have led to the crash and deaths of the bride-to-be and best man. “We have probable cause to believe he operated the boat while intoxicated,” said Rockland County Undersheriff Robert VanCura.

The New York Post reports that Stewart and Bond were planning to be married on August 10. Stewart’s stepfather said that “Lindsey did all the planning herself for the wedding. She’s a real smart lady. They’ve known each other since they were 10-years-old. They use to go to church together…They fell in love three and a half years ago. They were planning a future together.”
