Facebook Value Continues to Diminish In Investors Eye’s

This morning Bloomberg published an article featuring a harsh criticism of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s less-than-traditional business apparel. Apparently his signature hoodie is an insult to some crusty investors over on Wall Street who like all their monkey men to be dressed in the same uniform.

Zuckerberg, as would be expected, appeared on their IPO roadshow wearing the same hoodie we always see him in. Now we all now he’s not hurting for money, so we can only conclude that he’s making a statement by sticking to his normal attire. Perhaps he wants investors as well as Facebook fans to get the message that he’s not just in it for the money, but truly committed to social networking and the company’s mission to connect the world in unique ways.

Check out Bloomberg’s video on the “hoodie” debate:

If you remember, yesterday we reported on some fashion accessories Mr. Zuckerberg might want to consider in order to help blend his legendary hoodie persona with that of a more stale, but presentable Wall-Street-type.

The real news here is that investors are more concerned about Facebook’s ability to generate revenue than about Zuckerberg’s hoodie. More specifically the social networking platform fails to produce advertising growth at the same pace it adds new users. Many experts are already of the opinion that Facebook is grossly overvalued, and in fact, Facebook currently has a value higher than 90% of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

The good news is that Facebook still has some valuable opportunities in mobile advertising, and even has about a week to change investors mind about the potential for future growth before the May 18th IPO launch. Either way, they need to do something to convince investors that Facebook is worth the gamble.

Here’s some Twitter Reaction to Zuckerberg’s Hoodie persona:

I’m still not a fan of Facebook, but I like Zuckerberg for sticking to his guns, and by guns I mean hoodie. http://t.co/rsxKOMiK 6 hours ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Hey Zuckerberg, Why Not Try the Executive Hoodie?

A big tip of the hat to Business Insider for finding this executive hoodie from Betabrand.

This seems to be Zuckerberg’s best bet for looking professional and keeping his image. After an analyst commented on the “immaturity” he showed by wearing his trademark hoodie to a Facebook investor meeting, Zuck needs to show he can still take some things seriously.

By seriously, I mean he should make fun of a guy he could buy and sell a million times by making a mockery of his comments. The guy did say he would make a better Product Officer than a CEO. Stick it to him Zuck.

It’s a good thing he’s making billions, cause this hoodie costs $148. They aren’t joking, it really is an executive hoodie.

  • Trayvon Martin: Teacher Fired After Students Plan Hoodie Fundraiser

A Michigan teacher has been fired because she encouraged her students to plan a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin’s family in which each child would donate a dollar to wear a hoodie to school rather than their usual uniform.

Brooke Harris said she gave her 8th-grade journalism students a writing assignment on the Martin case and that the students expressed interest in raising money for his family; the school has fundraisers often which involve a “dress down” day for participants. Harris approached school superintendent Jacqueline Cassell about the idea but was told her class could not go forward with it. When Harris asked if her students could come before school officials to plead their case, she was suspended for “encouraging” the students to plan the fundraiser, and when Harris showed up at the school during her suspension–to drop off some items, she says–she was fired.

“I didn’t tell the kids, ‘Let’s go and do it anyway.’” Harris said. “I was actually, literally, in the process of talking to my kids about what we could do instead when (Cassell) requested the meeting with me and told me that I needed to let it go.”

“I was told … that I’m being paid to teach, not to be an activist. When I tried to defend myself, it was construed as insubordination,” Harris said.

More than 50,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that the Pontiac Academy for Excellence rehire Harris, but she isn’t sure that will happen.

“I want my job back, but I’m not entirely sure if that’s even possible,” Harris said. School officials deny that the fundraiser is the reason for her dismissal but won’t comment on it further.

A rep from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Dawud Walid, says the school’s decisions will only hurt the students.

“It taught the students who tried to organize and tried to raise their voice in terms of social justice that they will be repressed,” Walid said. “Instead of empowering our children … the Pontiac Academy is actually teaching children to internalize oppression and internalize racism.”

  • Bobby Rush Wears Hoodie For Trayvon, Gets Kicked Off House Floor

The hoodie has been a garment of much interest in the past few weeks, ever since 17-year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed because his own hooded sweatshirt made him look “suspicious” in the eyes of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Thousands of people have taken to wearing a hoodie in support of Martin and his family, including celebrities who want to raise awareness of the case, such as Diddy, Jamie Foxx, Chaka Khan, and Arsenio Hall.

Illinois representative Bobby Rush is the latest to use a hoodie in the plea for a full investigation into the case; the only problem is, he did it on the House floor, where there are strict rules about dress code.

Yesterday as Rush delivered the line, “Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum,” he took off his suit coat to reveal the sweatshirt and pulled the hood up over his head to drive home his point. This immediately caused an uproar and Rep. Gregg Harper, who was presiding over the floor, had Rush escorted from the House.

“My actions today [Wednesday] on the floor of the House of Representatives were motivated by stories that young men and women are telling me about fear,” Rush told the Chicago Sun Times.

While the hoodie is only part of the issue revolving around the case, it has become a tangible symbol for Martin and for those who want to see change happen regarding how people–particularly young people–are viewed.

“I am very much in touch with young people in Englewood…I have a church, and they talk with me a lot about what it’s like to have to walk to school or church or to the store and not know if you’re going to get home safely,” Rush said.

Rush said: “I applaud the young people all across the land who are making a statement about hoodies. About the real hoodlums in this nation…particularly those who tread on our laws wearing official, or quasi-official, clothes.”
