  • Whitney Houston Hologram To Become A Reality Soon

Whitney Houston will be featured in a show as a hologram in 2016, and the man in charge says the show will be like nothing anyone has ever seen before.

Alki David, who is the head of Hologram USA, says his company has been working with the same choreographers and musicians who actually created performances with Houston for her shows to make everything as authentic as possible.

“The musical arrangement, the choreography right down to the lighting and the design will be done with the original artists and original technicians and composers who worked with Whitney in the past so as to maintain absolute authenticity. The show will not just be Whitney comes on, sings, and gets off. The narrative will document parts of her life, her achievements, and celebrate Whitney,” David told Billboard.

David says that Houston’s family has been working with the company in order to move the project along in a way they’re comfortable with, but it has still been a slow process.

“Pat has been really professional and pragmatic but also she has clearly demonstrated her sensitivity over the past two years in the way in which she’s engaged with us,” David said.

While there’s no venue set for the show as yet, the company does have plans to host a residency at the Apollo theater for a similar performance featuring Billie Holiday. Whitney Houston’s show will likely be streamed on the company’s website for fans who can’t make it to the actual venue.

David insists that the show will be done with respect to Whitney Houston and her long career, despite coming so soon after her tragic death and the death of her only daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who succumbed earlier this year after she was found facedown in a bathtub at her home.

  • Katy Perry To Perform Alongside Michael Jackson’s Hologram At Billboard Music Awards

Katy Perry is still one of the best pop stars around despite debuting more than 10 years ago. Now she, alongside others, may make history tonight at the Billboard Music Awards.

It’s being reported that a federal judge has allowed the Billboard Music Awards to go ahead with its plans to use a Michael Jackson hologram during the awards show. We don’t know what the hologram will be performing, but it will be the first time the King of Pop has been resurrected using the technology. It won’t be the first time a famous music star has been resurrected though as Coachella had a hologram of Tupac perform back in 2012.

Resurrecting public figures through holograms is still a little weird, but Jackson’s hologram will be in good company during the Billboard Music Awards. Katy Perry, Lorde and Thicke will be performing on site at the MGM Grand Garden Arena while Miley Cyrus will be performing remotely from England. Cyrus is currently touring in the country as part of her Bangerz tour and is currently in the running for the top Hot 100 song with Wrecking Ball.

Barring Cyrus, who is performing remotely, it’s very likely that we’ll see either Perry, Lorde or Thicke performing alongside the Jackson hologram. At Coachella, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg performed alongside hologram Tupac without missing a beat.

While the two haven’t performed together, Lady Gaga has had Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku open her ArtRave shows this summer:

If you want to see Michael Jackson’s hologram and the rest of the Billboard lineup, you can catch the awards show Sunday night at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

  • Minority Report-Style Touch Display App Goes On Sale For $150

Minority Report had a lot of cool ideas, but one of the most intriguing was a holographic touch panel. Researchers are slowly working on getting holograms right, but we can now interact with floating touch panels using only a Kinect, a projector and an $150 app.

Ubi Interactive announced the launch of its new app that turns any surface into a touch display. Of course, it’s not like the wall magically becomes a touch sensitive panel. Instead, a projector works in tandem with a Kinect sensor to give the illusion that you’re interacting with the display.

Does Ubi sound like something you could use? Well, you should know that the base $150 app only includes support for a single touch point and display sizes up to 45 inches. If you want something bigger, you’ll have to fork over $379 for 100 inch display support, but it still only supports one touch point. You can upgrade to two touch points for $799, and 20 touch points will cost you $1,499.

The prices are obviously indicative of an app that’s intended primarily for enterprise use. Sure, you could use Ubi to play a game of Angry Birds on your wall, but that seems almost like a waste. I’d be more inclined to see developers buy the software and see what kind of new technologies they can think up with it. It might even encourage researchers to start putting more work into holograms that we can physically interact with.

  • Displair Turns Water Vapor Into A Floating Touchscreen

There were a few strange devices and inventions at this year’s CES. Some of the standouts included a smart fork and a touchscreen that can form buttons on its surface. None of that can compare, however, to Displair.

Displair, a startup out of Russia, was showing off its new display technology at CES last week. As its name suggests, it creates an interactive touchscreen out of a wall of water vapor. In a way, it’s kind of like a hologram, but it seems much cooler based solely upon the fact that it was totally unexpected.

Terrific movie about Displair by Victor Kossakovskiy from Displair on Vimeo.

One of the more interesting applications of Displair is in film. The technology’s creators say that they can display 3D images naturally without the need of glasses. Even more impressive, the technology could see the true return of smell-o-vision by loading the vapor with custom scents that compliment the on-air action.

Like most crazy new technologies, Displair is still in its infancy. Those at CES got to see it in action though, and even played around with it for a bit. Check out Huffington Post’s Jason Gilbert playing a round on Fruit Ninja on Displair. It’s absolutely wild.

As commenters have pointed out, the technology has quite a bit of input lag. That’s fine at the moment as it’s not exactly geared towards consumer consumption nor gaming. It’s primarily meant for enterprise applications. Even then, most businesses would probably be more interested in using something like Microsoft’s PixelSense. That being said, it’s only a matter of time before technology like Displair catches on to project images into three-dimensional space.

  • Holographic Tupac Performs at Coachella

Tupac has been dead for 15 years, or has he? Yes. Yes he has. But his hologram lives on. At Coachella on Sunday, the infamous rapper took the stage with Snoop Dogg (non-holographic Snoop Dogg) to perform “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”

People have been talking about it everywhere, including Google exectives. Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice-President of Social Business (Google +), posted the video on his Google + page

Everyone is tweeting about it, including some hip-hop savvy celebrities, and people who can’t resist a good pun.

“I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.”
