  • ‘Watched by Roman Godfrey (Hemlock Grove)’ Is A Netflix Category, Season 3 Approaching?

‘Watched by Roman Godfrey (Hemlock Grove)’ Is A Netflix Category, Season 3 Approaching?

As you may know, Netflix is rolling out a redesign to its web experience. I just got the update today, and was taking a look through it, when I noticed an odd category: “‘Watched by Roman Godfrey (Hemlock Grove)”.

Yes, Netflix is serving a genre based on a fictional character for a series it has already canceled. Nine months ago, the company announced that Hemlock Grove, its third major Netflix Original series after Lilyhammer and House of Cards, would return for one more season and be done.

Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for season 3. Does the appearance of this strange category mean Season 3 is nigh? Well, not necessarily. People have spotted it in the past. Here’s someone mentioning it on Twitter in November:

Still, it’s odd that Netlix is showing me the category so prominently as it’s giving me the new design. I mean it’s between “Trending Now” and “Recently Added”. It’s pretty high up in Netflix’s list of prioritized categories for me. I’ve watched the show, but not since last summer when the second season was released.

It’s worth noting that Netflix has tens of thousand genre labels that it may serve at any given time.

The second season premiered in July of last year. If it were coming in July again, it would be odd if we haven’t heard anything by now.

Here’s an update from 14 weeks ago from Roman himself:

    What's happening today? #HemlockGrove via @joeldelafuente

A video posted by Hemlock Grove (@hemlockgrove) on

So what has Roman watched according to Netflix? The list goes: Vampire Diaries, My Sucky Teen Romance, Being Human, Almost Human, Ravenous, Twisted, Pyschopathia Sexualis, Bates Motel, I Killed My Mother, The Killer Inside Me, Dexter, and Cosmopolis. That actually sounds about right, though he should have been watching Hemlock Grove so maybe it wouldn’t have gotten canceled.

Netflix should be giving us a list of titles to appear in July pretty soon. We’ll see if there’s any Hemlock Grove in store.

  • Netflix Announces ‘Hemlock Grove’ To Get One More Season

Netflix Announces ‘Hemlock Grove’ To Get One More Season

Netflix announced today that it’s bringing Hemlock Grove back for one more season, which would mark the first of Netflix’s originals to be concluded.

The show never got the best reviews, but it certainly had a fanbase who will no doubt be disappointed with the news. Personally, I felt that the show only got better with its second season, but I can also see where it doesn’t really need to go on for too long.

The reasons for the show’s conclusion are unclear. When it debuted, it drew more viewers than House of Cards. It even managed to get two Emmy nominations for its theme music and visual effects.

Netflix did say recently that it wants to bring more horror to its service, and so far, this is the only Horror series it has offered, unless you count From Dusk Till Dawn, which is dubbed a Netflix original, despite having debuted on the El Rey Network. I’m still holding out hope that they’ll get that Friday the 13th series.

Hemlock Grove: Season 3 will debut in 2015. It will have ten episodes.

According to Deadline, Charles H. Eglee will return as showrunner. The article quotes producer Eli Roth:

“We are so grateful to the fans of Hemlock Grove who have championed the series so intensely over two seasons. We are looking forward to taking the last and final season into some dark and unexpected places, and to giving viewers the killer finale you’d come to expect from Hemlock Grove.”

The Hollywood Report shares some additional quotes:

“We are delighted that our fans have invited us back to explore the fiendish recesses of the human condition for another season. Knowing it will be our last, gives us the opportunity to go out in a mushroom cloud of clever and soul shattering mayhem. See you soon on the twisted streets of Hemlock Grove,” said Eglee.

“We, along with the fans, are looking forward to visiting Hemlock Grove one last time, and we know that Chic, Eli and the team will provide a riveting and mind bending conclusion to complete the series,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vp original programming.

‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Hits Netflix

The second season of Netflix original Hemlock Grove debuted on the service today with ten new episodes (shorter than the thirteen-episode first season).

Netflix’s synopsis for the new season is:

One cannot quench his all-consuming thirst. The other cannot tame the beast clawing its way out. In the sleepy Pennsylvania village of Hemlock Grove, two young men struggle to accept painful truths: about family, themselves, the mystery of the White Tower – and a terrifying new threat so powerful it will turn them from predators into prey.

Episode titles are: Blood Pressure, Gone Sis, Luna Rea, Bodily Fluids, Hemlock Diego’s Policy Player’s Dream Book, Such Dire Stuff, Lost Generation, Unicorn, Tintypes, Demons and the Dogstar.

As Netflix prepares to debut the second season of its third original series Hemlock Grove, news is out that the first season is making its way to DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory.

The distributor announced the news on Facebook:

Today, Netflix posted a recap of the first season for those who have already seen it, and are getting ready to watch the second season without going back to rewatch the first. It’s even narrated by producer Eli Roth. Check it out here.

  • Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix is very interested in launching more original comedies, and is thinking about westerns and more horror shows as well.

The Hollywood Reporter has an extensive interview with Cindy Holland, the company’s head of original content. Asked about what genres Netflix would still like to try, she told the publication:

Comedies of varying types are an area of extreme interest to us. We haven’t seen the perfect Western project yet, either. Although Hemlock covers horror and supernatural to some extent, there are several subgenres within those categories that we haven’t reached into yet and would look to explore if the right project came along.

As far as comedy goes, Wet Hot American Summer appears to still be in the cards, based on the interview. They’re also still ready for another season of Arrested Development whenever creator Mitch Hurwitz is.

It’s also noted in the piece that Hemlock Grove drew more visitors than even House of Cards, so it’s quite understandable why they’d want to explore more horror opportunities. Personally I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Friday the 13th series that’s in development. Creator Sean Cunningham has mentioned Netflix in the past as a possible destination of interest. They seem like a perfect match to me. Netflix likes shows with built-in audiences that like to binge. I think USA Up All Night has proven hat people will watch back to back Friday films even when they’re watered down for television.

“I don’t think any genres are off-limits to us,” Holland said at one point, specifically in response to questions about interest in Chelsea Handler for a late night show (which the company just officially announced). Asked about live events, Holland reiterated a point the company has made in the past in that on-demand will continue to be the focus.

Some other interesting takeaways from the interview: Orange is the New Black is still Netflix’s biggest show; there is surprisingly little overlap in viewership among Netflix originals; and Netflix wanted True Detective and Fargo, but lost out to HBO and FX respectively.

Hemlock Grove: Season 2 is next up on the schedule, premiering July 11th. Here’s a new behind-the-scenes look at that.

‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2: The Closest Look Yet

Last week, Netflix gave us the first official trailer for its upcoming second season of Hemlock Grove, and it didn’t disappoint.

Now, Extra has a behind the scenes look at the season with comments from cast and crew, including Mr. Eli Roth (NSFW gore/language).

It looks and sounds like it’s going to be quite bloody. Apparently character development is a focal point too, so that’s good.

  • Netflix Releases ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Trailer

Netflix Releases ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Trailer

Now that Orange is the New Black’s second season has been released, Netflix is looking forward to the sophomore season of another of its originals. Hemlock Grove: Season 2 will debut on July 11th.

The company released the first real (and bloody) trailer for the forthcoming season, and for fans of the first season, it looks intriguing.

Netflix released a teaser in April, and a poster a couple weeks ago, but this is really the first look we’ve gotten at the actual season.

Executive producer Eli Roth recently had this to say, “I cannot wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two – it is going to blow away all expectations. Netflix has been an incredible partner, and whenever we wanted to take the story in a dangerous direction, they encouraged us to go even further – into a scarier, darker, and sexier place. We guarantee you won’t see anything like this anywhere else on television.”

From the looks of the trailer, it will live up to those words.

In 2013, Roth made similar comments, saying Season 2 would have “so many cool surprises”. The trailer would seem to confirm as much.

‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Gets New Poster [Netflix Originals]

The second season of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove is getting closer, and the company has a new poster out for it.

Netflix tweeted this out this morning:

Producer Eli Roth says the second season will “blow away all expectations”. Fans sure hope so, especially since they’ve been waiting for about fifteen months since the first one was released.

Here’s a recently released teaser for Season 2:

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Will ‘Blow Away All Expectations,’ Says Eli Roth [Netflix Originals]

As previously reported, Netflix announced today that Hemlock Grove: Season 2 will debut on July 11th, three months later in the year than the first season’s debut.

This season will have fewer episodes with just ten, but if comments from executive producer Eli Roth (whose credibility in the horror genre is nearly unmatched in my opinion) are any indication, fans are in for a wild ride.

“I cannot wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two – it is going to blow away all expectations,” he said. “Netflix has been an incredible partner, and whenever we wanted to take the story in a dangerous direction, they encouraged us to go even further – into a scarier, darker, and sexier place. We guarantee you won’t see anything like this anywhere else on television.”

    Sounds good.

Last year, he made similar comments, saying the season would have “so many cool surprises”. Considering how the first season ended, it’s probably fair to throw any expectations out the window.

Today’s announcement from Netflix says this about it:

Season two continues with the town coming to grips with the shocking massacre incurred by one of its deadliest creatures. Roman and Peter are now faced with new responsibilities and the realities that come with adulthood. Roman’s relationship with his mother (Janssen) is all but dead as he struggles with his unwanted Upir birthright and the disappearance of his sister, Shelley (Martin). Peter moves in with Destiny (Horn) and is forced to get a job after his mother is sent away. Meanwhile, in search of a new life, newcomer Miranda Cates (Madeline Brewer), embarks on Hemlock Grove with an unknowingly profound effect on Peter and Roman. And Norman (Scott), still reeling from the loss of his family, must face the harsh truths that are uncovered about those he still loves.

Netflix says it will be providing more info about Season 2 here, as well as across the show’s various social media accounts.

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Release Date Finally Announced [Netflix Originals]

Fans have been waiting for an eternity, but Netflix has finally announced the release date for Hemlock Grove: Season 2. The date, which is much later in the year than the first season’s debut, is July 11th.

Update: More details about the season, including comments from Eli Roth here.

    Here’s a teaser:

Yes, truly a teaser. You’re not getting much out of that one other than the sweet confirmation that the show’s return is actually getting closer.

It’s interesting that Hemlock Grove: Season 2 is not coming until the middle of the summer, well after the second season of Orange is the New Black, considering that the first season of that debuted after the first season of Hemlock Grove, which was released in April.

While the House of Cards: Season 2 debut was pretty close to that of the first season, it’s clear that we can’t rely on the date of any given season of a Netflix original to correspond with subsequent seasons. Last week, we learned that the second season of Derek will hit May 30th. The first season debuted in September last year.

Oh well. As long as the seasons of these quality shows keep coming fans will be thirsty for more.

Hemlock Grove’s second season was announced back in June, so they’ve had plenty of time to put together a quality run, even if it’s shorter than the first season (there will be ten episodes, according to the initial announcement).

Since the first season, the show has picked up Charles H. Eglee of The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield fame as an executive producer. It has also added Orange is the New Black actress Madeline Brewer.

Shelly will be played by a different actress as Madeleine Martin from Californication (Hank’s daughter) joins the cast, replacing Nicole Boivin.

According to producer Eli Roth, there are going to be “so many cool surprises” this season.

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Release Date Announcement Expected Soon

Less than a month ago, Netflix released the second season of House of Cards. Shortly thereafter, it announced a release date for its other big name show Orange is the New Black. But don’t forget, there was another show that came out between the first seasons of those two shows last year – Hemlock Grove.

So far, no announcement has been made for the show’s second season release, but it is expected soon. And why not if we already have a date for OITNB?

Hemlock Grove debuted in April last year, and the announcement of the second season came in June.

Shooting reportedly wrapped, and people involved with the show have said a release date will be announced soon. Zachary Stieber at Epoch Times reports:

    W. Andrew Powell of the blog The Gate further said, after taking a tour of the set and interviewing most of the cast members, that the season 2 release date will be announced “in a few weeks.” And that was on February 11.

Executive producer Eli Roth also said on February 20 that the season is “coming soon.”

The second season will be shorter than the first at ten episodes. It has picked up Charles H. Eglee of The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield fame as an executive producer.

  • Netflix: All Originals (And ‘Breaking Bad’) To Be 4K, 3D Support May End

Netflix: All Originals (And ‘Breaking Bad’) To Be 4K, 3D Support May End

All of Netflix’s original shows will be produced in 4K, according to the company. CEO Reed Hastings said as much at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, where he promoted the company’s use of the ultra HD video format along with partnerships with TV makers.

We knew that House of Cards: Season 2 was produced in 4K, and a new trailer (also in 4K) was made available this week. Now we can expect upcoming seasons of shows like Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black to follow suit, not to mention initial seasons of shows that have yet to debut (like Sense8 and the untitled project from the Damages creators).

Netflix reportedly has partnerships in place with Sony, LG, Vizio and Samsung for 4K video. The Hollywood Reporter shares some comments from Hastings:

“Netflix is working with Sony to create a fabulous entertainment experience. When 4K started to be talked about, we saw the Internet as the natural medium to deliver it because most 4K content was going to be available online. We know that content creators are very excited about 4K because of the additional picture range they get to play with. All new original content from Netflix, including season two of House of Cards, will be shot, edited and produced in 4K…and we’ve been working with Sony to show Breaking Bad in 4K.”

He added that Netflix’ 4K service will require 15Mb/s of in-home bandwidth compressed using HEVC. “This is very practical,” said Hastings. “You can stream 4K over WiFi if you want to. It’s testament to the work we’ve been doing on encoding and what Sony has been doing on decoding.”

Hastings also appeared at LG’s press conference at CES, which saw the launch of LG’s Web OS-powered Ultra HD smart TVs.

As Netflix focuses on 4K content, 3D appears to be taking a backseat. A year ago, Netflix launched Super HD and 3D streaming, but now the company is indicating that 3D will likely go away due to lack of interest.

Giga Om’s Janko Roettgers spoke with Netflix’s Joris Evers at CES, and was told that the company may end support for 3D in the future. Evers also reportedly said that Netflix will not charge consumers any extra money to watch content in Ultra HD.

  • Netflix, Hemlock Grove Help Boost Gaumont Revenue

Apparently Netflix series are having a positive financial impact on the studios creating them. This is at least the case for Gaumont, which is responsible for Hemlock Grove, the Eli Roth-produced werewolf mystery series that Netflix released earlier this year.

In fact, the studio credits the show, along with its NBC series Hannibal for a 57% revenue increase as its film division stumbled.

    The Hollywood Reporter reports:

Hemlock Grove and Hannibal have boosted the bottom line for French mini-major studio Gaumont, with the studio’s revenue up 57 percent through the third quarter, which it attributed to the strength of its new LA-based TV production arm. Revenues totaled $170.2 million (€123.6 million) through Sept. 30 over $108 million (€78.5 million) in the same period in 2012.

Gaumont International Television (GIT) brought in $78.6 million (€57.1 million) for the group. Its Netflix and NBC hits propped up the historic studio, which saw its film section stumble slightly. Film division revenues were down to $87.4 million (€63.5 million) from $101.3 million (€73.6 million) year-over-year, with a steep 21 percent decline in the French home video market.

Hemlock Grove: Season 2 is slated for a 2014 release. A deal for a shorter second season was announced in June. It will have some new cast members and, according to Roth, some “cool surprises.”

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Gets A New Shelly [Netflix]

Netflix’s Hemlock Grove has added a new cast member for an old character.

According to a report from Deadline, Madeleine Martin has been tapped to replace Nicole Boivin in the role of Shelly Godfrey (pictured above). Martin has reportedly joined the series as a regular.

Many will recognize her as Hank Moody’s daughter on Showtime’s Californication:

Last week, we learned (also via Deadline) that Hemlock Grove has also added Orange is the New Black’s Madeline Brewer, who will play a “graphic novelist entering town,” have a recurring role.

According to producer Eli Roth, there are going to be “so many cool surprises” in Hemlock Grove’s upcoming season.

Season 2 is due out in 2014. Production has only just begun.

    Image: Hemlock Grove (Netflix)

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Gains ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Cast Member [Netflix]

Netflix announced in June that it was renewing horror drama Hemlock Grove for a second season, but things have been relatively quiet around the show since then (other than its two Emmy nominations).

In early August, we learned that they were starting to set up for production, and last week, producer Eli Roth shared a photo from a read through for an episode.

Now, some new casting news has come out. Deadline reports that Madeline Brewer will appear in the second season, playing a “graphic novelist entering town”. She will reportedly have a recurring role.

Brewer already has experience working on Netflix dramas, having appeared in seven episodes of Orange is the New Black. She played Tricia Miller on the show. This is, so far, her only other acting credit. SPOILER: Given the fate of her character in the first season, it’s good to see she’s got more work lined up.

According to Roth, there are going to be “so many cool surprises” in Hemlock Grove’s upcoming season. After the way the first season ended, I can’t even begin to imagine.

  • ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Full Of ‘Cool Surprises,’ Says Eli Roth [Netflix]

Hemlock Grove will be back on Netflix next year with a second season. We don’t know a whole lot in the way of details about where the story is going, but from the sound of it, we’re going to be surprised by what happens.

Executive Producer Eli Roth posted the following photo from a table read on Instagram, saying, “Read through was incredible! So many cool suprises this year.”

Hemlock Grove’s Joel de la Fuente recently posted this:

It’s been nearly two months since production designer Drew Boughton told us they were starting to set up production for Season 2.

The show picked up “seasoned showrunner” Charles H. Eglee of The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield fame as an executive producer. Season 2 will be shorter than the first at ten episodes, and will be released sometime in 2014.

“One was just a warm up for what we have in store for season two. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected,” Roth said when the second season was announced.

Hemlock Grove was nominated for two Emmys – one for its theme song and another for its special effects.

  • Netflix Is About To Double Its Original Content Investment

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos spoke to at the RTS Cambridge Convention, where he revealed that the company plans to double its spending on original content in the coming years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sarandos said that originals are currently at ten percent of the budget, and that they expect them to grow to twenty percent.

While Netflix launched its first original series, Lilyhammer, in 2012, 2013 has clearly been the year of Netflix. The company started off strong early in the year with the nine-time Emmy-nominated House of Cards, before quickly following with Hemlock Grove, Arrested Development and the much-talked about Orange is the New Black.

Since then, the company has quietly put out the kid/teen-targeted Mako Mermaids (which has new episodes debuting this weekend), and this week, it just launched the Ricky Gervais dramedy Derek.

The company has also been releasing a number of exclusive stand-up comedy performances from comedians like John Hodgman, Rob Schneider, Doug Stanhope, Mike Birbiglia and Kathleen Madigan. Netflix made headlines with news that it would be releasing other exclusives from Aziz Ansari and Russell Peters (which includes both a stand-up special and a “docu-series”). A special from comedian Marc Maron is also reportedly in the pipeline.

Other Netflix originals that are expected to debut in the coming year include Marco Polo, Narcos and Sense8, not to mention the stuff we’ll be seeing from the big DreamWorks animation deal Netflix announced back in June.

Second seasons of Lilyhammer, House of Cards, Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black are all on the way. An Arrested Development movie (which Netflix will likely be involved with) is in the works, probably along with another season eventually, and Ricky Gervais has already indicated he’ll do another season of Derek (it’s not yet clear if Netflix will be involved, but it seems very likely).

And that’s just the stuff we know about. It sounds like we’re going to be hearing about a lot more Netflix originals in the not too distant future. It will be interesting to see if this has a significant impact on the amount of non-original content it licenses. So far, it hasn’t been much of a problem.

Word is that all of this original content is making subscribers want to stick around, which should certainly please investors. The company’s stock hit a record high this week, by the way.

The soundtrack for Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, which features music from composer Nathan Barr, is now available on iTunes.

Barr, Gaumont TV and CW3PR shared the news on Twitter.

The show has been nominated for two Emmys. One of them is for the title theme, which Barr composed, and is the first track on the soundtrack.

The track listing is as follows: Hemlock Grove, Ice Cream, Shelley’s Email, Crime Scene, Carnival, Aftermath, Is This a Joke?, Killer Wolf, Letha Dreams, Roman and Olivia, Peter Dreams, Land Beyond, Brooke’s Vigil, Longing, Trust Each Other, Screaming Schoolkids and Peter’s Transformation.

The tracks are sold separately for $0.99 a piece if you don’t want to grab the whole thing.

Barr has also worked on other Eli Roth projects Cabin Fever, Hostel, Thanksgiving (the fake trailer in Grindhouse) and Hostel: Part II, as well as on True Blood, The Americans and numerous other movies and TV shows.

We recently learned that they were getting ready for production on Hemlock Grove: Season 2. It’s unclear whether it has actually begun at this point. Either way, it’s due out in 2014.

  • Netflix Wants To Make Sure Its Users Know About Its Emmy Nominations

Netflix shows have been nominated for a total of fourteen Emmys. We’ve known this for a while, but Netflix also wants to make sure all of its users know it too. The company has put out a new video driving home this point.

The video was uploaded to Netflix’s YouTube channel wit the following description:

Netflix Congratulates its Original Series “House of Cards,” “Arrested Development,” and “Hemlock Grove” on a combined 14 Emmy nominations. Watch them all, only on Netflix.

According to The Wrap, Netflix will be showing the ad to subscribers.

Netflix’s Emmy nominations are, of course, historical. They mark the first time online video programming has ever received a nomination (let alone multiple nominations).

Hemlock Grove was nominated for two Emmys, while Arrested Development was nominated for three, and House of Cards was nominated for nine.
