  • BioShock Infinite: The Siren Raises The Dead

The team at Irrational Games has consistently wowed gamers over the past three weeks with the reveals of the “totally not Big Daddy” Heavy Hitters in BioShock Infinite. To recap, first was the reveal of the Motorized Patriot, a robotic George Washington wielding a minigun. The next reveal was The Handyman, an enemy that’s about as close as you’re going to get to a Big Daddy. The third reveal featured the Boys of Silence, faceless monstrosities that attacked with sound.

In the fourth and final installment of the Heavy Hitter reveals, Irrational Games presents the Siren. The Siren is unique among the Heavy Hitters in that it’s a ghost. Being a ghost is bad enough, but the Siren also has the unique ability to raise dead enemies back up to fight again. As the team points out, this creates the dilemma of focusing on either the Siren herself or taking care of the smaller enemies again.

If this enemy sounds familiar to you, you probably played F.E.A.R. 2. It also featured a similar enemy that would raise the dead to fight against you. Killing it would kill all the raised enemies as well. It was a good concept that was bogged down by it being used far too much to be scary, and it just became annoying. Here’s hoping Irrational makes the Siren less of a common enemy and more of a special encounter.

That’s the last of the Heavy Hitter videos. While there won’t be a new reveal next Tuesday, the team will still keep posting updates on the game before it’s October release.

  • BioShock Infinite: Boys of Silence Bring The Noise

As promised, Irrational Games is here again to give us the skinny on the new “totally not a Big Daddy” Heavy Hitter from BioShock Infinite. To recap, the two Heavy Hitters revealed so far have been the robotic George Washington and The Handyman. The newest Heavy Hitter is the most disturbing one yet.

Meet the Boys of Silence, the enemy that adds a much needed creepy factor to the game. Unlike previous videos, the team is staying rather tight-lipped on this enemy. It seems they want players to be surprised when they eventually meet them in game.

We can gather a few things about them from the video however. The team says that the Boys of Silence are blind, and operate entirely on sound. They’re going to be the Heavy Hitter that players will want to sneak around instead of directly confronting. BioShock Infinite director Ken Levine says that they’re like the cameras from the first BioShock, but they can walk around this time. If one of them does spot the player, it will call in reinforcements.

We don’t get much of a look at the new enemy, but I can already see this guy going down as the enemy players will mostly want to avoid. Creating tension is important in first-person shooters and these guys do the trick.

There will be another reveal of the fourth Heavy Hitter next week at the same time. There has been no real overlapping theme between these enemies so far which makes guessing the next one even harder. I for one can’t wait to see what they have in store next.

  • BioShock Infinite Details Second Heavy Hitter: The Handyman

Irrational Games began detailing their Big Daddy-like enemies for BioShock Infinite last week with the Robotic George Washington. They promised a new reveal every week for these intimidating foes and they have delivered again this week.

The second Heavy Hitter is named the Handyman. While the name conjures up images of a plumber or carpenter, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. The Handyman is a man placed inside of a giant metal body with their heart clearly exposed on the front.

Ken Levine, director of the game, says that these men are tragic figures, but wouldn’t elaborate on what he meant by that. Funny thing is, the Big Daddies from BioShock were also tragic figures, but that didn’t stop players from filling them full of lead to save the Little Sisters. Here’s hoping gamers have a bit more sympathy for these enemies, but I doubt it.

The team says the Handyman is going to be a powerful, but agile enemy. Players shouldn’t be surprised when they start to see these enemies leaping around the environment with ease. The Handyman will also pick up NPCs that are close to them to throw at the player character.

I’m sure the Handyman is going to draw the most amount of criticism for being too much like the Big Daddies from BioShock. There are some similarities, but BioShock Infinite is its own world for Irrational Games to explore. Gamers just have to keep the faith that the developers know what they’re doing.

There are still two more Heavy Hitters to be revealed and many more surprises are sure to be revealed as we draw closer to the game’s October 16 release date. We’ll keep you updated when more information is revealed.

What do you think of the Handyman? Is he better than Robo-Washington? What do you think the other Heavy Hitters are going to be? Let us know in the comments.

  • BioShock Infinite Introduces Robotic George Washington

There’s not been a lot of information on BioShock Infinite for a while now, but Irrational Games is hoping to change that starting today.

Today on the Irrational Games blog, the team posted the first update in a series on enemies called the “Heavy Hitters.” The first one to be introduced is the Motorized Patriot, but I’m just going to call it “Robo Washington.” I think it sounds better, but it might get confused with the currently peaceful Robo Washington standing guard at Disney World’s Hall of Presidents.

Here’s a video where Ken Levine talks about Robo Washington in detail and the inspiration behind his creation. I for one welcome our new robot masters modeled after American founding fathers.

It does make you wonder, however, how much faster Washington would have won the Revolutionary War if he had a minigun, or maybe it’s just me. Either way, it’s pretty awesome.
