Sony Launches First OTC Hearing Aid in the US

Sony has launched an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid in the US following a change in regulation that paved the way.

Hearing aids in the US required a doctor’s prescription until recently. In mid-August, however, the FDA changed its regulations to allow consumers to acquire hearing aids without a prescription and said they should start arriving on the market as early as mid-October.

Right on time, Sony has announced its first OTC hearing aids for the US market, building on a century of leadership in the hearing aid market.

“At Sony, we strive to realize an inclusive world where everyone can participate, and we see this new product line as an opportunity to increase accessibility for many,” commented Mike Nejat, Vice President, Engineering with Sony Electronics, and head of Sony’s U.S. Accessibility Promotion Office. “With our unique technology heritage, we can help bridge a gap between individuals and their environment.”

Sony’s news was praised by industry experts:

“As a company dedicated to advancing the cause of Wonderful Sound for All, we welcome the introduction of these self-fitting hearing options, with the knowledge that more than 65% of the total U.S. consumer market– that needs better hearing care has not yet achieved it,” 4 says Carsten Buhl, President, WSA Americas. “We expect these over-the-counter hearing aids to help people begin the journey to better hearing health.”

Sony has initially brought two models to the market:

The first two products to debut from the partnership are the CRE-C10 and the CRE-E10 self-fitting OTC hearing aids, designed with the understanding that one size does not fit all, and that people deserve options that best fit their unique needs, situations, and lives. Utilizing the app, the CRE-C10 and CRE-E10 intuitively adapt to each user’s speech and surroundings, blending the latest technology with comfort to meet each individual’s hearing goals.

Sony and advocates hope OTC availability will help more individuals get the assistance they need:

“Many people have ongoing challenges related to hearing loss and because of the negative feeling around it, they often don’t seek the help they may need,” says Tyler Ishida, President of Consumer Business Group, Sony Electronics. “As a leader in the audio innovation space, we are thrilled at the opportunity to improve the hearing assistance landscape with cutting-edge yet quite accessible devices that will ensure new over-the-counter solutions for those living with hearing impairment and also help general consumers engage with their surroundings in a deeper, more connected way.”

  • FDA Proposes Rule to Allow No-Prescription Hearing Aids

The Federal Food and Drug Administration has proposed a rule that would allow Americans to buy hearing aids without a prescription.

Some 15% of Americans have some degree of hearing loss, but getting hearing aids can be a difficult and expensive process, requiring a doctor’s visit and, often, a fitting with an audiologist.

The FDA wants to make it easier and cheaper for Americans to get access to hearing aids, eliminating the need for a prescription. The move could open the door for hearing aids to be sold online or in stores.

“Reducing health care costs for everyone in America is a top priority,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Today’s move by FDA takes us one step closer to the goal of making hearing aids more accessible and affordable for the tens of millions of people who experience mild to moderate hearing loss.”

  • Hearing Aids For iPhone, Apple Watch Users Hit The Spotlight

Hearing aids from ReSound will be in the spotlight next week as the company takes its expanded portfolio to EUHA’s 60th International Congress of Hearing Aid Acousticians in Nuremberg, Germany.

This year, the company introduced ReSound Smart for Apple Watch, which lets users control smart hearing aids from their wrist.

During the conference, the company will give interactive demos of its line-up of smart hearing aids including the ReSound LinX2, which it declares to be the world’s first full family of “made for iPhone” hearing aids. ReSound says in an announcement:

This innovation builds on ReSound’s industry-leading technologies in all areas of Smart Hearing (audiology, connectivity, design, and apps), and on the fourth generation of GN ReSound’s proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless platform. ReSound will also showcase the world’s smartest super power hearing aid, ReSound ENZO, for people with severe to profound hearing loss.

ReSound’s Smart Hearing aids lead the industry in connectivity, allowing users to stream sounds, including phone calls and music, directly to their hearing aids without the use of an intermediary device. Innovative technologies give wearers the most natural hearing experience possible, including Spatial Sense, which gives wearers a natural ability to focus on conversation while maintaining a sense of where sounds are coming from. Users also have the freedom to personalize their hearing experience through the ReSound Smart app, available for iOS devices, including iPhone and Apple Watch, and several Android models.

In other hearing aid news, CVS announced it will be experimenting with selling hearing aids (as well as glasses) in stores.

  • Hearing Aids Get Smart, Can Be Controlled By An iPhone

Hearing aids aren’t exactly what you would consider high tech. Sure, the technology has come a long way since its introduction in 1898, but nobody has paired it with a smart phone… until now.

Beltone, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of hearing aids, announced the Beltone First today. The electronic hearing aid is the first that can be controlled remotely via a user’s iPhone. The hearing aid paired with the power of the iPhone allow for unprecedented sound quality, or so claims Beltone.

“Our new Beltone First hearing aids are a game changer for a growing number of baby boomers who have been looking for a hearing aid that truly meets their on-the-go lifestyle needs,” said Todd Murray, President of Beltone. “These new iPhone compatible hearing aids definitely add a ‘cool factor’ that hopefully encourages those who’ve avoided wearing hearing aids in the past to finally make the move!”

The Beltone First claims to offer a number of advantages over a typical hearing aid:

  • Beltone First hearing aids wirelessly communicate with each other to self-adjust as a person’s surroundings change.
  • The free Beltone HearPlus app recognizes the places an individual regularly visits and automatically applies the right settings. “Find My Hearing Aid” locates misplaced devices.
  • Provide unprecedented sound quality and connection between the iPhone and the hearing aid via Beltone’s award-winning, third generation 2.4 GHz technology.
  • Beltone got its new hearing aid into the ear of a user and they said the major benefit is that he can now change audio levels covertly. While one shouldn’t be ashamed of having hearing aids, one can still be embarrassed when they have to manually adjust them in plain sight. With the Beltone First, a user can adjust levels from their iPhone so nobody has to know they’re wearing hearing aids in the first place.

Here’s an ad that shows what Beltone is talking about:

Beltone notes that the release of the Beltone First coincides with Better Hearing & Speech Month. During the month, everybody is encouraged to get their hearing checked.
