  • Obama Gets to Watch Game of Thrones’ New Season Before You Do

A couple of weeks ago, we heard that President Obama asked HBO CEO Richard Plepler if he, as the most powerful man in the world, could please pretty pretty please get some advance episodes of Game of Thrones and True Detective–two of the company’s most popular shows.

You can’t really blame a guy for trying. I know I sure as hell would.

Well, it turns out those reports were true–and HBO obliged.

Speaking to Vanity Fair’s Jim Windolf, Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff had this to say:

“One perk of being the most powerful man in the world: yes, you get to see episodes early.”

So there you go. Fresh off binging on 13 episodes of House of Cards, President Obama is now making his way through the drama and dragons of Westeros way before you.

I guess House of Cards creator Beau Willimon said it best, when referring to the news that Obama was such a big fan of the show:

“On the one hand I was thrilled, and on the other hand I’m thinking ’13 hours is a big chunk of your day.’”

Sadly, none of us are the President of the United States. That means that all we have until April 6th are trailers–glorious trailers, I’ll admit, but still just trailers.

    Shit.

He explained that the new season of the HBO series, which will be added as part of Foxtel’s premium drama channel showcase, would be available for non-subscribers through the company’s streaming service. This type of agreement is the first of its kind for Foxtel.

“Foxtel is committed to offering ever-improving access and availability to the entertainment our customers love. Game of Thrones is one of the most popular programs in the world, and is a favorite among Australian viewers,” Freudenstein said.

“Foxtel’s agreement with HBO means we can provide our customers with first-run access to Game of Thrones season 4, along with a great library of movies from the Foxtel Movies channels, which we’re thrilled to offer Foxtel Play customers at a special rate during season 4 of this landmark show.”

But, that’s not the only update where Game of Thrones is concerned. HBO has also announced that a Game of Thrones mixtape is also set to be released.

According to the network’s press releaseCatch The Throne: The Mixtape, which will include tracks from notable hip hop artists like Wale, Common, Big Boi, and Daddy Yankee, has been implemented to commemorate the upcoming season four premiere of the critically acclaimed series.

The press release explains that the 10-song mixtape, which features hip-hop and reggaeton music, is inspired by themes and storylines directly associated with the first three seasons of the series.

All of the songs on the mixtape actually contain samples and excerpts of music from the original scores. The network hopes to peak the interest of more viewers by drawing attention to the plot of the series through music.

“We are excited to create an additional fan touch point with Catch The Throne: The Mixtape,” says Lucinda Martinez, SVP of Multicultural Marketing at HBO. “This is a unique opportunity to give fans great original music and an  innovative way to highlight the electrifying ‘Game of Thrones’ series.”

  • HBO GO on the PS3 Finally a Reality, Still Waiting on a PS4 App

HBO GO on the PS3 Finally a Reality, Still Waiting on a PS4 App

In oh, really, that wasn’t a thing already? news, today is the day that HBO GO, HBO’s on-demand streaming video app, finally lands on the PS3.

“Watch every episode of every season of the HBO’s best shows, including True Detective, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Speaking of Game of Thrones, with the season 4 premiere airing on April 6th, you’ve got more than a month to get caught up on the first three amazing seasons.”

Yeah, you have plenty of time to catch up on Game of Thrones. The season finale of True Detective is next week, so I suggest you get your ass in gear and binge on the first seven episodes of that before you take a trip to Westeros. That merely a suggestion–carry on as you wish.

HBO first announced that the PS3 would finally get an HBO GO app back in January.

For all the PS4 owners out there–sorry. You’re going to have to wait a little bit longer–or maybe a lot longer. SVP of business development Phil Rosenberg would only say this about the future of HBO GO on the PS4:

“We are also working diligently with HBO to bring the HBO GO app to PS4.”

Of course, HBO GO isn’t the only high-profile app that the PS4 is still lacking.

Ok. But for PS3 owners with HBO subscriptions AND a cable subscription (ugh), stream away.

  • Stevie Nicks Would Love to Write Music for Game of Thrones

In a recent interview with the UK’s Radio Times, singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks said she’d love to write some music for HBO’s award-winning Game of Thrones series.

Nicks told Craig McLean that watching the series helped her through a particularly difficult time in her life. Nicks’ mother died in December 2011 and not long after, Nicks came down with pneumonia.

“I didn’t leave the house for almost five months … with my pneumonia and my mother’s death I watched the entire first season of Game of Thrones. That certainly took my mind off everything,” Nicks said.

The show is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. The series currently consists of five books, the first of which is titled Game of Thrones.

Season Four premieres on April 6, and the television series is quickly catching up to the novels. Martin says he feels the pressure to finish the sixth novel Winds of Winter.

“It is great that so many people are eager for the next book and certainly these are the people who are paying my bills and allowing me to have a house across the street from my other house. But at the same time, sometimes I just wish they would stop pressuring me about it. It will be done when it’s done. I’m working on it. I don’t know what else I can say: I’m a slow writer, I’ve always been a slow writer, and these are gigantic books.”

The skill it takes to create the story behind the HBO series isn’t lost on Nicks:

” … how in the world does somebody come up with these 15 or so characters and then everything that’s wrapped around each one of the 15 characters? It blows my mind that he’s able to create this vast, interlinked world. As a songwriter I write little movies. But I can’t imagine sitting down and writing even one small book, a novel. We each have our thing that we’re really good at.”

Nicks revealed that she’s written a poem for each Game of Thrones character, including her current favorite Khaleesi, who is played by British actress Emilia Clarke.

In the meantime, Nicks is keeping busy with several projects. She spent much of 2013 touring with Fleetwood Mac, released a documentary DVD titled In Your Dreams, and guest starred in Season Three of American Horror Story: Coven.

  • Mark Wahlberg Is Bringing Another Show To A&E

Mark Wahlberg continues to do big things, and has just inked a deal with A&E for a second show to air on the network. He has recently worked with the network on The Wahburgers, a reality show about the Wahlberg family.

He has been seen in the role of the producer on a number of occasions before, and will do so again with the new show. Mark Wahlberg has previously been a producer on HBO’s Entourage, which saw him as a guest star on select episodes, and he is currently a producer on Boardwalk Empire, which also airs on HBO.

Wahlberg’s new show is called Breaking Boston, and is described as a docudrama. He has modeled much of the series on his own life and personal experiences that he has had in his hometown of Boston.

The show will follow a group of four blue-collar women in their twenties, as they try break the cycle of their peers in a town where education, employment, and opportunities are hard to come by.

Mark Wahlberg was most recently seen on the big screen in Lone Survivor, and has received Oscar nominations for both The Departed and The Fighter.

He was recently chosen as the host of the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. While it may seem like an odd fit for such a big action star, he is also a big family man, and will see the opportunity as a change of pace from his usual films.

Speaking on the characters of the show, Mark Wahlberg said “These are real women telling their original stories of trying to break out of what’s expected of them. The odds are difficult, but I believe they can make it.”

In addition to Wahlberg, the long list of executive producers includes Stephen Levison, Bill Thompson, Stephanie Drachkovich, Jennifer Colbert, Lily Neumeyer and Devon Graham. It is also brought to viewers by 44 Blue Productions.

A&E will debut the upcoming Mark Wahlberg production, Breaking Boston, on March 13.

  • Stevie Nicks Expresses Interest in “Game of Thrones”

Stevie Nicks has already expressed her deep admiration for the HBO hit fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones.

Now, she’s revealed that she desires to go beyond the realm of simple viewership.

In a recent interview with the U.K.’s Radio Times magazine, the Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter revealed that she would actually love to write for the hit series.

“I would love to write some music for the show. I’ve written a bunch of poetry about it — one for each of the characters,” Nicks said. “I’m always looking for that kind of inspiration, and I’m very inspired by the show — as I was very inspired by ‘Twilight.’”

She also shed light on what prompted her personal admiration for the show, revealing that she began tuning in following her mother’s death. “I didn’t leave the house for almost five months. And then I got pneumonia. With my pneumonia and my mother’s death, I watched the entire first season of ‘Game of Thrones.’ That certainly took my mind off everything.”

Games of Thrones premiered on HBO in April of 2011. The show, which the publication refers to as a “real-life phenomenon,” has garnered mainstream success, averaging approximately 11.6 million viewers per episode, making it the second-most viewed series in HBO history.

Based off the epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, the HBO colossal production has also garnered numerous accolades including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series for all three seasons, a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series – Drama.

Game of Thrones is just about ready to begin its fourth season, which is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

  • Game of Thrones Trailer “Vengeance” Is Out

Game of Thrones Trailer “Vengeance” Is Out

Have you seen the latest trailer for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones? I have and I must say that it looks promising.

Of course as a fan of the series (and someone who is impatiently waiting for George R.R. Martin to finish the next book…) it’s exciting to get a hint at what comes next. If you’d read the books, you know that a few major events go down this season.

If you haven’t read the books, I won’t spoil it for you. Like “The Red Wedding”, some things just have to be seen to get the fully experience. So brace yourselves…that’s all I’m going to say.

As for this latest trailer, it’s clear that everyone who survived the violent close of Season 3 is back.

In the trailer, we here young Arya Stark reciting the names of four individuals: Joffrey, Cersei, and Tywin Lannister, and the “Red Woman”. She says that she has trouble sleeping until she says these names as they are the names of people she intends to kill out of a need for vengeance.

“Vengeance” is the name of the trailer, leading us to wonder if Arya is successful in her quest. Or perhaps someone else with an ax to grind.

We see fan favorite Tyrion Lannister in shackles and then later a dungeon, where he tells someone off screen that if they’re looking for justice, they’ve come “to the wrong place”.

There’s also a glimpse of Sansa Stark in a boat. Do we dare hope she’s finally escaped the cruel Joffrey? Speaking of which, we keep getting glimpses of his marriage to the beautiful Margaery Tyrell. One wonders if she will fare any better than the hapless Sansa.

Finally there’s the Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen, who given the events that preceded The Game of Thrones series has one of the best cases for vengeance.

She also has dragons, which we get a brief look at, and who seem to have grown quite a bit.

She is shown consolidating her power and it seems she intends to at some point make life a living hell for the entirety of the population of Westeros.

There is a lot to look forward to in the next season, and I almost envy those who don’t know what to expect. Almost. Having experienced the “Red Wedding” and other stunning events in text before seeing it on screen, I am sort of glad I had some preparation.

    Again…brace yourselves!

  • Orange Is The New Black Releases Teaser Trailer, Reveals Season 2 Premiere Date

How many people have been going crazy wondering about the second season of Orange Is The New Black, and when it will finally be available to stream?

The show is one of the first to be streamed exclusively for Netflix, and became an instant hit for its unique subject matter, and the strong acting from its large ensemble cast.

The show was nominated for a handful of awards after its first season, and Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper Chapman, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress In A Drama Series.

Well there is some good news, and some bad news. The good news is that fans of the show are finally aware of when season 2 will be available, but the bad news is that it will not be available until June 6th. The show is created Jenji Kohan, who was also the face behind the popular Showtime drama Weeds.

For those that somehow missed season one of the acclaimed Netflix series, Orange Is The New Black tells the story of a woman whose drug smuggling past catches up with her, and is forced to spend time in a women’s prison.

The show is also a true story, and is based on the memoir Orange Is The New Black: My Year In A Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman.

The show has been celebrated for its outstanding ensemble cast, and includes people such as Jason Biggs, known for hit comedies such as American Pie, and Laura Prepon, known mostly for That 70’s Show. Taylor Schilling plays the main character on the show, and is joined in the prison by a variety of colorful characters, while Natasha Lyonne, a co-star of Biggs’ from American Pie, is also an inmate on the show.

Netflix just announced Orange Is The New Black’s season 2 premiere date along with a teaser trailer that is brief, but filled with everyone’s favorite characters, and will surely get everyone even more excited for season 2.

House Of Cards, the other hit show that premiered on Netflix last season, was finally made available for streaming yesterday. The new episodes had everyone going crazy, and even President Barack Obama shared his excitement for the show, tweeting that he did not want any spoilers.

The political drama follows Frank and Claire Underwood (Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright) in their rise to the top, and the obstacles that they face along the way, including reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara). Frank Underwood plays a congressman from South Carolina, and the success of the show has already officially secured a third season that is in the works for next year.

With the help of shows such as Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards, Netflix has become a big factor in television awards, and in rankings, just in the past year. In this year’s Golden Globe awards, Netflix was second in nominations to only HBO, and Netflix also has more subscribers in the US than HBO.

Does season 2 of Orange Is the New Black have the ability to top season 1? How many people plan to binge the show when it is released on June 6th? As with other Netflix shows, all 13 episodes of the second season will be available to watch immediately.

  • Yahoo: People Are Searching For Netflix 71x More Than HBO

It would appear that consumers are very interested in the competition between Netflix and HBO, as searches for the two rivals are seeing a significant uptick, according to Yahoo.

“People are interested in the ongoing ‘war’ between the two services as [netflix hbo] is spiking off the charts this week,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Over the past 30 days, it looks like Netflix has been more on people’s minds as [netflix] is searched for 42x more than [hbo go] and 71x more than [hbo].”

“Men dominate searches for both, but women tend to search more for Netflix than HBO services,” the spokesperson says. “When it comes to actual original programs, HBO’s [true detective] has been searched for over 2x more than [house of cards] over this past month. However, [house of cards] has beat out [girls hbo] by nearly 3x over the past month on Yahoo.”

House of Cards ranks highly for returning TV show searches in general over the past thirty days, coming out well ahead of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

There have been a great deal of searches for the Game of Thrones: Season 4 trailer.

Based on the earnings reports from Netflix and Time Warner, Netflix appears to be winning the subscriber battle, at least here in the U.S. with Netflix reporting 33.4 million domestic subscribers compared to HBO’s 29 million for the end of 2013. HBO, however, remains more profitable.

  • Netflix Has 4.4 Million More U.S. Subscribers Than HBO (As Of Year’s End)

Much has been made of the competition between Netflix and HBO.

Recently, NPD Group released a report indicating that Netflix was gaining ground against premium channels like HBO, indicating the such channels were losing subscribers. HBO called bullshit on the report, which was mysteriously removed from NPD’s site.

Later, during an earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings would suggest that HBO is Netflix’s “bitch”. When the company released its earnings, it also announced that it has 44 million subscribers. 33.4 million of them are in the U.S.

Time Warner has now released its own earnings, and revealed that HBO has about 29 million U.S. members.

Still, HBO remains more profitable. Find Time Warner’s release here.

Netflix says it will spend $3 billion on TV and film content this year. It also announced a $400 million senior note offering.

  • Scott Bakula to Star in ‘NCIS’ New Orleans Spinoff

Scott Bakula walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards back in September and he will soon walk a new crew of NCIS agents straight to New Orleans with a spinoff of the beloved hit show, NCIS. In other words, Scott Bakula will soon become the Mark Harmon of NCIS set in New Orleans.

The Quantam Leap star will play NCIS Special Agent Pride, and will portray a man who “embodies New Orleans.” Not driven by pride, however, Pride has the “need to do what’s right and does it all with warmth, passion, strength and humor. He’s a unique federal agent working in one of this country’s most unique cities.”

And like NCIS star Mark Harmon, it in no way hurts to see that Scott Bakula in his role as Special Agent Pride lends himself to the subtle sexy undertones the original show and it’s first spinoff–NCIS: Los Angeles exude. Oh, yes–Special Agent Pride is a handsome and very sexy man.

The spinoff will air as a two part special this spring. And if you think that’s exciting, just see what CBS has to say about this impending hit show.

“The NCIS New Orleans office handles cases from Pensacola through Mississippi and Louisiana to the Texas panhandle. New Orleans with its rich setting of music, fun and debauchery is a magnet for military personnel on-leave. And with fun comes trouble. It is a natural backdrop for a unique character driven spin-off.”

Add Scott Bakula to that mix, and CBS has another huge hit on its hands.

Scott Bakula is, of course, known for his role on Quantum Leap, but also starred in the HBO biopic about Liberace–Beyond the Candelabra. He is presently performing a recurring role in HBO’s hit show Looking.

Is there enough excitement and intrigue put forth by Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Sean Murray and the rest of the NCIS gang to spark regular interest in Scott Bakula’s role in New Orleans as Special Agent Pride? Will LL Cool J and his gang in L.A. keep fans tuning in as well?

You’ve got to admit, NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles provide exceptional TV viewing. Will you check it out when it heads to New Orleans, too?

  • Netflix CEO Basically Called HBO Netflix’s ‘Bitch’

HBO CEO Richard Plepler recently made comments indicating that he doesn’t really care if HBO subscribers share their HBO Go passwords.

Netflix held its fourth quarter earnings conference call in the form of a Google Hangout on Wednesday. One analyst brought Plepler’s comments up to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. Hastings’ response was:

“That was an interesting comment, I suppose. So, I guess Plepler – the CEO of HBO – doesn’t mind me sharing his account information. So it’s plepler@hbo.com, and his password is ‘Netflix Bitch’.”

Everyone on the hangout appeared to think that was pretty funny. You can watch it at about fourteen and a half minutes in:

So I guess he’s kind of saying that HBO is Netflix’s bitch? I’m not sure how grounded in reality that is, considering HBO’s content is one major thing that keeps people clinging to cable and not going all in with streaming services like Netflix.

He’s obviously joking, but still. These comments don’t bode well for any content agreements between these two anytime soon.

NPD Group put out a report earlier this week indicating that HBO is rapidly losing subscribers as Netflix gains them. HBO called the report “simply incorrect,” and NPD ended up pulling the report. It’s unclear if Hastings knew that the report was pulled.

Either way, Netflix’s subscribers do continue to grow. The company announced that it has surpassed 44 million members, and expects to surpass 48 million this quarter.

  • HBO: We’re Not Losing Subscribers, Report Is ‘Simply Incorrect’

HBO: We’re Not Losing Subscribers, Report Is ‘Simply Incorrect’

HBO has gone on the offensive following a recent report that claimed the pay-TV service was bleeding subscribers (thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime).

“The research is simply incorrect. Both HBO and Cinemax services have shown significant domestic subscriber growth the past two years,” said an HBO spokesperson.

The LA Times quotes HBO as saying they added 1.9 million subscribers in 2012 and thinks that figure will hold steady when the numbers from 2013 come in.

HBO is responding to a report, published Monday, by the NPD Group. NPD claimed that a survey of 7,500 people and an analyzation of 450,000 consumer transactions led them to the conclusion that pay-TV networks like HBO, Showtime, and Starz had lost 6% of their subscriber base in the last couple of years.

Not only that, but streaming services like Netflix had gained 4%.

While it’s true that streaming services are on the rise, HBO claims that it’s not at their expense.

A showtime rep also responded, echoing HBO’s sentiments:

“Showtime and every other premium network have increased both subscribers and penetrations over the last two years…[The NPD study] does not accurately reflect actual subscriber counts.”

The link above? It’s been removed by NPD. Looks like the market research company is having second thoughts about the validity of their report.

Meanwhile, HBO is continuing to work on making addicts out of us all.

  • Netflix And The Like Gain Ground Against Premium TV Channels, Says Disputed Report

Netflix And The Like Gain Ground Against Premium TV Channels, Says Disputed Report

Update: HBO says the NPD report is incorrect, and that it’s not losing subscribers. Both HBO and Cinemax have shown “significant” growth over the past two years, according to the company. Meanwhile, NPD appears to have pulled the report.

It appears that premium cable channels like HBO, Showtime and Starz are losing subscribers as online streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus are gaining them.

Research from the NPD Group has come out (via Variety) indicating that U.S. premium TV channel subscriptions declined by 6% From March 2012 to August 2013, while subscriptions to the streaming services grew by 4%.

32% of homes in the U.S. had premium cable subscriptions while 27% had subscriptions to online services. According to NPD Group, Netflix leads these, but the others are seeing big growth.

HBO has been making its online video service HBO Go more accessible. News of its arrival on Playstation consoles just came last week. It also recently gained Chromecast support. Still, you have to subscribe to the TV channel to access it, which remains a major barrier to much more significant growth for that.

Netflix has certainly established itself as a major force in original content. Its shows have now won Emmys, a Golden Globe and a People’s Choice Award, and it now even has an original documentary nominated for an Oscar. The service has a ton more original content on the way over the next year.

  • Natalie Dormer Had Half a Mind to Cut Her Hair

In Best Haircut-brought-back-from-the-80’s news, it looks like Natalie Dormer has joined the “Less Hair to Comb Without Shaving it all Off” club, founded by Mr.T and Batman’s Two-Face, respectively.

Yes, the England-born Natalie Dormer of HBO’s Game of Thrones fame has shaved the hair off of a piece of her scalp, and the crowd goes wild.

While this “edgy” cut may seem normal, and almost mandatory on many scenes today, what may be the most interesting about Natalie Dormer’s haircut is that she premiered it at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night.

Most people who wear these haircuts like its an everyday thing usually aren’t at the SAG Awards. So, Dormer arriving on the scene saturated with high-end gowns and black ties in a punked-out hairdo made a big impression on the fans, cameras and colleagues alike.

Sure, some people probably don’t like it. Dormer can probably deal with it–she is a cast member in the gory Game of Thrones, after all.

The hairdo that now requires Dorner to wear at least half of a warm cap until it warms up around here is also serving as great promotion for her upcoming movie. When asked what prompted this recent haircut, USA Today tells us that she made sure to let everyone know that it is for her role as Cressida in the next Hunger Games saga, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Pt.2.

The big question is, “What Do The People Decide?” Here are a few answers:

The biggest questions of all, however, are the ones always related to haircuts of this nature: How will she grow it out? Will she eventually just shave her entire head? Or will she place the growing left side in cute little pig tails as it grows back? Stay tuned for the answers to all of your questions.

  • Bill Maher Calls Edward Snowden’s Words ‘Batsh*t’

Bill Maher says every time former NSA contractor Edward Snowden opens his mouth, something akin to batsh*t comes flying out. The HBO funny man–whose show has just been renewed for a 13th season–even went so far as to compare Snowden to Ron Paul

“He reminds me a lot of [former Rep.] Ron Paul. I agree with what he says, I nod along and then he says something totally bats—-,” he said on Real Time with Bill Maher during an interview with author and columnist Glenn Greenwald.

As the satellite interview continued, Maher said to Greenwald, “I also respect Edward Snowden, obviously this debate wouldn’t be happening without Edward Snowden, but I was wondering if you agree with me that every time he opens his mouth, he also says something completely nuts.”

He then cited quotes from Edward Snowden pertaining to surveillance programs being “never about terrorism” but about “social control and diplomatic manipulation” instead.

“Well that’s crazy,” Maher said. “They were about stopping terrorism, they may have gone too far, but everybody in the government isn’t out to get you.”

“What’s nuts is the fact that you think that’s nuts,” Greenwald told the talk show host, adding, “He’s a 29 year old, who’s not a trained politician, he doesn’t have aides whispering in his ear what he should say. He’s not adept at that, that’s what makes him so impressive. It was an act of conscious that he stepped forward as an ordinary person.”

Did you catch Bill Maher saying he thinks most everything Edward Snowden says is “batsh*t?” What’s your opinion on the remark? Which of the two–Edward Snowden or Bill Maher–do you think is more qualified to wear that “batsh*t” title?

It seems Bill Maher and Glenn Greenwald have agreed to disagree on the matter–or at least that’s what Maher told him they ought to do toward the end of their interview.

“When he says, ‘They know every friend you’ve ever discussed something with,’ we’ll just have to agree to disagree on what’s f—-ing nuts,” Maher said.

It will definitely be interesting to see how many newsworthy reactions appear as a result of this interview.

  • HBO ‘Builds Addicts’ One Shared HBO Go Password at a Time

HBO wants you to become addicted to their shows, and it turns out they don’t really care if you do it somewhat nefariously.

You think you’re sticking it to the man when you steal your buddy’s HBO Go password to binge on Game of Thrones? Wrong. According to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, you’re simply playing into their hands.

“To us, in many ways, it’s a terrific marketing vehicle for the next generation of viewers and it is actually not material at all to our business,” said Plepler in an interview with Buzzfeed.

“It’s not that we’re ignoring it, and we’re looking at different ways to affect password sharing, I’m simply telling you that it’s not a fundamental problem, and the externality of it – it presents the brand to more and more people and gives them the opportunity to hopefully become addicted to it.

What we’re in the business of doing it building addicts – building video addicts. And the way we do that is by exposing our product, and our shows, and our brand to more and more people.”

That’s a pretty progressive stance – one that should make password-sharers pretty happy. But Plepler also makes a terrific point – and you can see that HBO is playing the long game here. Expose people to great programming that they simply cannot live without, and you have a future subscriber.

Of course, one of the main reasons that people share HBO Go passwords is HBO’s fault. Unlike other streaming video apps like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Instant Video, HBO is still tied to the ball & chain that is cable TV. In order to access HBO Go, you have to be an HBO subscriber through one cable company or another. It’s a real drag and something that the internet (and cordcutting movement in particular) has been pretty vocal about in their frustration.

People shouldn’t hold their breath, as HBO is living comfortably with this model. It’s not like HBO hasn’t thought about offering a standalone HBO Go service – one free of the ties of cable – but right now, that’s what works for the decades-old company.

Plepler reiterated that position to Buzzfeed.:

“Right now, that’s the right model for us. Are we always thinking about optionality, of course we are always thinking about optionality…if the arithmetic changes and made sense in a different way we are not going to be caught without the ability to pivot.”

Of course, HBO Go’s inaccessibility leads to password sharing. It also leads to piracy – which, oddly enough, is another thing that HBO has a history of simply brushing off.

“I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but it is a compliment of sorts,” HBO programming head Michael Lombardo said of Game of Thrones piracy last year. “The demand is there. And it certainly didn’t negatively impact the DVD sales. [Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.”

In fact, his true worry came when he thought about downloaders receiving an inferior product.

“One of my worries is about the copies [downloaders are] seeing. The production values of this show are so incredible. So I’m hoping that in the purloined different generation of cuts that the show is holding up.”

Here’s the bottom line: HBO is so, so good. Their shows are so, so good. They know this. You know this. And until their current model starts to deteriorate, there’s simply no reason to screw with it.

  • True Detective Receives Great Response From Fans

True Detective, a new television series on HBO, premiered last night and is already a smash hit,

The show follows two detectives Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) who are paired together to solve one of Louisiana’s most grisly murders. The show spans from 1995, when the duo began investigating the murder, until 2012, when the case was re-opened.

Harrelson previously starred on an HBO movie Game Change, and he says that his previous work with HBO made the decision to join True Detective an easy one.

“There’s just no finer organization making amazing stuff out there than HBO. So it’s, like, a privilege to work with them,” Harrelson revealed. “And, you know, the other part of that is just the people on this stage, you know. I really I love Matthew. He’s my brother. Phenomenal, amazing person.”

While we may not see McConaughey on television often, he admits that he has nothing against doing television series. “It’s a different time in television,” McConaughey said. “It’s not there’s not that feeling of if you’re having a successful film career and somebody brings up something on television we didn’t know, at the time when I got it, where it was going to be. All I knew is I read the first two episodes, and I was in. And I was just, at the time, looking for quality.”

Harrelson and McConaughey’s characters are portrayed as complete opposites. While McConaughey was originally selected to play the part of Hart, he says that the other character is the one that kept speaking to him. “It came in, and I was supposed to look at the role of Hart. I read the role of Hart. I was like I understood objectively why they would be coming to me with the role of Hart. I understood that, from probably closer to some of my past work,” he said. “But Cohle was the voice that I remember writing down, ‘I can’t wait to turn the page and hear what’s coming out of this guy’s mouth. It’s got fire on it every time.’”

Harrelson and McConaughey have been off-screen friends for a long-time, and even admit to finishing each other’s sentences. However, on the show, they had a very restrained and tense relationship, which ultimately challenged their off-screen friendship.

“With this project we didn’t use a lot of our normal kind of shorthand, the way we kind of finish each other’s sentences and shit,” Harrelson explained. “He was an island. And he is one of the most gregarious, awesome guys I know, but in this he was fully in character, and he was very much an island.”

  • Woody Harrelson Returns To TV On HBO Series

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson returned to television for a new HBO series True Detective, which premiered on Sunday.

Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) are paired together to solve one of Louisiana’s most grisly murders. The show spans from 1995, when the duo began investigating the murder, until 2012, when the case was re-opened.

“It’s a whodunnit for the murder case, but what you’re going to see throughout is who these two guys are, and when you see them in 2012, how the hell did they get there and what happened in the interim,” McConaughey said.

“I’m still surprised that this is a series I’m part of,” said Harrelson. “When my agent told me that Matthew was doing this series, and asked if I wanted to read (the script), I was like: ‘Matthew’s doing a series? A series?’ It just seemed so unlikely.”

Surprisingly, Harrelson’s character was originally offered to McConaughey. “They did offer the Hart part originally to him (McConaughey), but he said he wanted to be Cohle. He said he just kept hearing the voice of that character in his head,” Harrelson said.

Harrelson revealed a lot of similarities between himself and his character. “There are many similarities, not the least of which is that he really loves his family,” Harrelson said. McConaughey’s character, on the other hand, is not the least bit like McConaughey. “He’s not good with civilization in society. He doesn’t know how to have an improvised moment. He’s not wired like that. He’s not trying to be antisocial. He’s just a bit of an outlawed monk,” McConaughey said.

McConaughey and Harrelson previously co-starred in the 1999 comedy EDtv and 2008’s indie comedy Surfer, Dude. They admitted that it was hard to not play characters who were buddies, but were instead had a very tense relationship. “We reciprocate, and that’s part of the beauty of our relationship. We add onto each other. We affirm each other… but (in this show), we’re not cozying up to each other,” McConaughey said.

So far, fans seem to love the series, and took to Twitter to express their excitement.
