  • The Sopranos, The Wire, and More HBO Hits Now Streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video

The Sopranos, The Wire, and More HBO Hits Now Streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video

Today’s the day, people. If you’re an Amazon Prime Subscriber, you can now stream a handful of some of HBO’s best shows of the past (and a few from the present) on Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Nearly a month ago, Amazon made a pretty big announcement–a deal with HBO to bring a bunch of classic content to their streaming library. It marked Amazon’s first true competitive advantage over rivals Netflix and Hulu, as snagging HBO content is a pretty big deal. Other than HBO GO, Amazon Prime Instant Video is now the only other place that you can (legally) stream HBO shows online.

Amazon Prime now has every single episode of The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, Six Feet Under, Eastbound & Down, Enlightened, and Flight of the Conchords. It has some seasons of True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, and Treme. HBO will give up more recent seasons of those shows in the coming years.

Classic miniseries like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, John Adams, and Angels in America are also now available in their entirety. Plus, some HBO original films and comedy specials from the likes of Louis CK and Bill Maher.

“We’re thrilled to deliver this collection of groundbreaking, beloved content from HBO to Amazon Prime members for unlimited streaming at no additional cost,” said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. “Given the number of customers who purchase these titles from Amazon, we know how much customers love these shows. We are excited to bring them to Prime members—we think they are going to love them, whether they are experiencing them for the first time or re-discovering them from the beginning.”

You can also expect to see Girls, The Newsroom, and Veep pop up on Amazon Prime at some point. Amazon won’t get any more specific than “the coming years.”

Painfully absent from the deal is HBO’s megahit Game of Thrones–I guess HBO has to hold something back for the HBO GO subscribers.

  • John Oliver’s Take On European Google Ruling Is Pretty Good

Last week, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Google and other search engines must take requests from people for search results to be deleted. They don’t necessarily have to delete all results requested, but may find themselves fighting a lot of court battles when they don’t comply.

Almost immediately after the ruling, requests started rushing in, including at least one from a convicted pedophile, one from a doctor with a negative review, and one from a politician who allegedly engaged in some questionable behavior while in office.

John Oliver dedicated about seven minutes to the topic on his new HBO show Last Week Tonight on Sunday night, which HBO has made available on YouTube. It’s pretty spot on.

    Memorable quotes include:

“Okay, a failsafe question to ask yourself when drafting a law is, ‘Might child pornographers like this?’ If so, maybe take another pass at it.”

“Luckily the only thing stopping this ruling from doing real damage is that it is by its nature completely ineffective because what the EU court doesn’t understand is that the Internet is like quicksand. The more aggressively you fight to remove yourself from it, the deeper you’re going to sink down into it. The case in point is the guy who started all of this.”

This refers to the Spanish man who complained about past debts surfacing in Google results, who as a result of the court’s decision is “now world famous for being that Spanish guy with debts from 1998.”

“The only thing I know about him,” said Oliver, “is the only thing he didn’t want me to know.”

Google will reportedly have a “right to be forgotten” tool up in less than two weeks.

  • ‘True Blood’ Season 7 Photos Online

The seventh season of the HBO vampire drama True Blood premieres on June 22, and new photos from the final season have been released online. A teaser trailer for season 7 was posted last month, which indicated that the storyline continues directly after the season six cliffhanger, which had hepatitis V-infected vampires descending upon the human residents of the fictional town of Bon Temps.

The new True Blood snapshots do little to describe what’s in store for the Golden Globe-winning series, though viking vampire Eric Northman, a popular character portrayed by Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård, was noticeably absent from the latest promotional media. Northman was last seen burning up while lounging nude on a glacier in the season six finale, after a spell protecting his vampiric skin from UV radiation abruptly wore off. Though, True Blood executive producer Brian Buckner confirmed that Skarsgaard remains a regular cast member in the final season.

Nelsan Ellis as True Blood’s Lafayette Reynolds:

Anna Paquin as True Blood heroine-fairy Sookie Stackhouse:

    true blood

True Blood is produced by Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball, and is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, detailing the dealings of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, Louisiana. The show has been a hit for HBO, and has received generally favorable reviews. Interestingly, the very adult-oriented series influenced a parody featured on Sesame Street in 2010 entitled True Mud:

The first episode of True Blood season 7 is titled Jesus Gonna Be Here, and was directed by star Stephen Moyer, who plays southern vampire Bill Compton. Commenting on the final season, Moyer said, “I’m really excited, really sad. It’s just a group of people that I absolutely love and it’s certainly the happiest and warmest set I’ve ever been on, so that’s going to be hard to walk away from.”

  • Lena Headey Pleased with Game of Thrones Rape Scene

The HBO epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones recently aired a rape scene involving stars Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, which has caused some controversy, and now Headey has commented that “it felt great.”

For those uninitiated in the lore and dealings of the Game of Thrones fantasy realms of Westeros and Essos, Headey and Coster-Waldau portray the aristocratic and incestuous twins Cersei and Jaime Lannister. The oldest of their inbred children grows to become an evil king named Joffrey, who is poisoned during his wedding reception, an event casually referred to by fans as “The Purple Wedding.”

Cersei later displays a softer side to her trademark vitriol by while excessively mourning over her dead son, but then twin Jamie enters the chamber and rapes her in front of Joffrey’s corpse. George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Fire and Ice, depicts the event differently, but show producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss decided to adjust the tone of the scene in their adaptation.

Fan reaction has been a mix of sympathy for the Cersei character, confusion over the Jamie character, who had been reforming himself a bit after losing his right hand, and a bit of outrage over the scene in general, which is significant for a show known for pushing the envelope of bad taste.

    Cersei, Jaime and brother Tyrion:

In a move likely to court further controversy, Headey explains her take on the rape scene. “She’s staring at the body of her dead son… she’s joined by her brother who’s also her lover, so, you know we’ve got bigger problems than the one everyone is talking about.”

There’s lust and desperation… there was this need,” Headey says, describing Cersei’s motivations. “It wasn’t right and yet it felt great and it played out the way it did. And I was really happy with it.”

Here is some fan commentary via Twitter:

In related news, Headey reportedly purchased a new fixer-upper house in Sherman Oaks, California.

  • Jason Momoa Rumored to Appear in Batman vs. Superman

The actor who portrayed Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones might be joining the cast of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman vs. Superman film. Jason Momoa has been rumored to have signed on for the Man of Steel sequel, possibly playing DC Comics superhero Aquaman.

Batman-News.com has speculated that Momoa had joined the Batman vs. Superman cast months ago, to appear alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Though, Momoa has repeatedly denied the rumor, telling IGN, “It’s just rumors. I want to say something amazing, but I can’t comment on rumors. It’s flattering. I’m not involved in it.”

Momoa again denied any involvement in the Snyder production during an interview in January. “I get it all the time. It’s just a rumor. It’s just rumors. I swear. Man to man. You can punch me in the face. You’re allowed to punch me in the face. It’s a flattering rumor, but…,” Momoa commented.

Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa, 34, hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, and is best known for his roles in the fantasy series Stargate Atlantis and Game of Thrones. He’s recently written, directed and produced the feature Road to Paloma, also starring alongside wife Lisa Bonet, which is set to be released in July. Momoa received his signature facial scar in 2008 after being slashed in the face during a bar fight in Hollywood. The actor received roughly 140 stitches during reconstructive surgery.

While it’s been rumored that Affleck buddy Matt Damon might take on the role of Aquaman, some fans see Momoa as a better fit for the part:

In related news, Zack Snyder has just been chosen by Warner Bros. to direct a Justice League movie.

  • HBO Lets You Watch ‘Last Week Tonight’ Debut For Free On YouTube

HBO debuted Last Week Tonight, the new show featuring comedian John Oliver (formerly of The Daily Show).

They’ve disabled embedding, so you’ll have to go to the actual video page to watch, but here it is.

The show doesn’t appear to stray too far from the Daily Show format, except that it’s weekly rather than daily, and John Oliver takes on the Jon Stewart role as opposed to the correspondent role he had on the Comedy Central show (though the interview he does is pretty reminiscent of those he did on that show). It should fit well with HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, in HBO’s news commentary line-up, though it appears on Sundays, while Real Time is on Fridays.

So what to people think about it? Here are a few samples from the YouTube (or Google+) comments.

Ralf Haring says, “It’s obviously heavily influenced by the Daily Show, though it didn’t really feel like he was picking through Stewart’s and Colbert’s leftovers with some segments focusing on the Indian election. I expect in the future he’ll be less nervous – the bits proceeded at a breakneck pace – and that it’ll evolve further in its own direction.”

“I liked it,” added Alok Tiwari. “And I like the breakneck pace as well. Some Americans seem to be put off by the unbleeped cursing, though. (They really mustn’t watch any TV shows from UK.)”

“If The Daily Show and The Bugle podcast had a baby, this would be it,” said Eric N. Wilson. “And afterwards there would be several “oh, this is awkward” moments when they were in the same room, since mommy and daddy can’t even agree on whether cricket is a sport or a cellphone.”

    Here’s the Twitter conversation:

Obviously you still have to be an HBO subscriber to watch the show regularly, and they still don’t offer a standalone HBO Go experience. You still have to have cable or satellite.

HBO does appear to be loosening its grip on its content just a little bit though. Last week, Amazon announced that it gets to stream some of its older content.

It’s unclear how long HBO will leave the show available on YouTube, or whether there’s even a limit, but if you want to check it out, you’ll probably be better off doing so sooner rather than later.

In addition to the entire episode, the show’s YouTube channel has a few shorter clips, including Oliver’s interview with General Keith Alexander, former head of the NSA.

  • HBO Strikes Deal With Amazon Prime

HBO Strikes Deal With Amazon Prime

With Netflix leading the online streaming video pack with original programming like the wildly successful House of Cards, not to mention their expansive catalog of movies and television shows, one would not be blamed for wondering if Amazon Prime Instant Video would ever be able to hold its own.

Now Amazon Prime has stepped into the ring like nothing heretofore. They announced that they have inked a deal with HBO to carry that giant’s programming.

Amazon.com, Inc. announced a content licensing agreement with HBO, making Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-only subscription home for select HBO programming.

The service kicks in on May 21 of this year. Feel free to get excited, but wait til you hear the addendum, exclusions, and specifications before you schedule a Game of Thrones binge.

Some shows included in the deal:

    The Sopranos
    Six Feet Under
    The Wire
    Big Love
    Deadwood
    Eastbound & Down
    Family Tree
    Enlightened
    Treme
    Boardwalk Empire
    True Blood
    Band of Brothers
    John Adams

Previous seasons of other HBO shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available over the course of the multi-year agreement, three years after airing on HBO.

The HBO deal is a real feather in the cap for Amazon, announcing that it is here to play ball.

“Amazon has built a wonderful service—we are excited to have our programming made available to their vast customer base and believe the exposure will create new HBO subscribers,” said Charles Schreger, President of Programming Sales for HBO.

Prime Instant Video already has the exclusive rights for PBS series Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge, as well as Under the Dome, Extant, 24, Veronica Mars, Orphan Black, The Americans, Justified, Falling Skies, Grimm, Workaholics, Suits and Covert Affairs.

  • HBO Shows Coming to Amazon Prime Instant Video

HBO Shows Coming to Amazon Prime Instant Video

In a move that has given Amazon Prime Instant Video its first true competitive advantage over Netflix, Amazon has just announced that a bunch of HBO content is coming to their streaming video service.

Starting on May 21st, Amazon Prime Instant Video customers (anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription) will have access to every season of many classic HBO shows, as well as original miniseries, comedy specials, and documentaries.

New and currently airing HBO shows on the other hand, well, they’re a different story. Some (like Game of Thrones) aren’t mentioned in the deal, while seasons of others (like Girls, True Blood, and The Newsroom) will hit Amazon Prime three years after their original airing on HBO.

There is some great stuff on the way, however, including The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome and Six Feet Under, and of recent favorites such as Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords. Also, Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific

“HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history, with more than 115 Emmys amongst the assortment of shows coming to Prime members next month,” said Brad Beale, Director of Content Acquisition for Amazon. “HBO original content is some of the most-popular across Amazon Instant Video—our customers love watching these shows. Now Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership.”

For a while now, Netflix has had most of the competitive advantages over Amazon Prime Instant Video. Sure, the latter sports some movies and classic TV series that the former lacks (Hannibal, Orphan Black, The Shield, for instance), but Netflix is killing it with the original content game. Amazon Studios is making a push, but nothing they’ve produced has had the instant success of shows like Netflix’s House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Plus, Amazon Prime Instant Video has always felt like an auxiliary sort of service–one that you get because you already have Amazon Prime (for the free two-day shipping, presumably). Netflix is just Netflix, if that makes any sense.

In my mind, inking a deal with HBO is huge for Amazon.

Speaking of Netflix, if you ask CEO Reed Hastings, Amazon Prime Instant Video isn’t so much a competitor as it is a compliment to Netflix. Hell, he’s even a subscriber.

“Prime’s a great service,” said Hastings at Netflix’s recent earnings call. “I’m a prime member, and most Netflix employees are Prime members, and it’s coming across to most people in our society as very complimentary to Netflix. People look at them as multiple channels. You saw that Amazon included us on the Fire TV, and of course we’ve been before on the Kindle Fires, and it’s a great relationship all around where we’ve got unique content. They’ve also got some unique content. They’re also doing originals, and there’s multiple networks out there. It’s very much not a zero sum game, and we’re building this ecosystem together that’s about Internet video, and the more players there are in Internet video, the bigger that ecosystem gets, and the big theme is Internet video is taking share away from linear video, and so we’re all participating in that transformation.”

Then again, now Amazon Prime Instant Video has a bunch of HBO stuff and Netflix doesn’t. If you’re an HBO lover who’s a cordcutter and not really into torrents, Amazon Prime Instant Video is now the place to get the content you want. Of course, until HBO caves and releases a standalone HBO GO service, free of the chains of cable TV. But don’t hold your breath.

More from this announcement: the two parties are remedying a recent issue. HBO GO will become available on Amazon’s new Fire TV by year’s end. Year’s end, you ask? Yes. HBO GO is notoriously slow to hit new streaming devices.

  • ‘Silicon Valley’ Renewed by HBO for a Second Season

Good news, guys. Your favorite new HBO startup has just received a sizable investment.

HBO has just announced that after just three episodes, they’ve decided to renew Mike Judge’s new comedy Silicon Valley for a second season.

  • Game of Thrones Redefines Disturbing…Again

Viewers of the popular HBO drama Game of Thrones have seen a lot. From graphic beheadings to a pregnant woman getting stabbed in the belly to a man getting castrated to your favorite characters getting killed off; the series simply isn’t afraid to go there.

However, even for a show that clearly doesn’t pay mind to crossing the proverbial line, last night’s episode Breaker of Chains, may have contained the most disturbing scene yet of the entire series.

Many spectators probably thought that Game of Thrones would experience some sort of comedown after last week’s surprising murder of King Joffrey in the episode called Purple Wedding. However, the writers clearly aren’t interested in letting the audience take a breath.

For all the hateful vengeance held in Cersei’s (Lena Headey) heart, she is certainly taking the death of her son extremely hard. As she is keeping vigil next to his body, her brother (and lover who is also Joffrey’s biological father), Jaimie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) arrives and asks to be alone with his sister.

Since Jaimie’s return after a long absence, he and Cersei have become estranged. She considers him half a man without the benefit of his right hand, and he is still madly in love with her despite how cruel she treats him. Jaimie and Cersei have a moment while they mourn their son together. They begin to kiss. However, when Jaimie’s cold metal hand touches Cersei’s face, she recoils and tries to push him away.

But Jaimie doesn’t stop his advance. She begs him. She tells him no. There are times when she seems to give in, to want to make love, but she never stops pleading with him to stop. Jaimie ends up raping Cersei, right at the base of their dead son’s grave.

It is a haunting and chilling scene, powerful enough for viewers to find a speck of sympathy for Cersei, a character who is so diabolical that she barely seems human.

Alex Graves, who directed the episode, sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the incest-rape scene. He said, “The whole thing for me was about dead Joffrey lying there, watching the whole thing. I wanted to make sure I had Jack in there as much as I could. Of course Lena and Nikolaj laughed every time I would say, ‘You grab her by the hair, and Jack is right there,’ or ‘You come around this way and Jack is right there.’ ”

Graves discussed the importance of Joffrey’s presence in the scene, “He is their first born. He is their sin. He is their lust, and their love — their everything. If he’s gone, what’s going to happen?”

Viewers spent much of the past three-plus seasons hating the cocky Jaimie Lannister. However last season, when he suddenly became the underdog who was being mistreated and abused, we began to root for him. Now, are we back to hating him again? Can we forgive a character who is so loathsome that he would rape his sister next to their son’s grave?

George R.R. Martin’s book A Storm of Swords, the source material for the episode, has the same scene between Jaimie and Cersei. The major difference is that in the book, the sex is consensual.

    Here’s an excerpt:

She kissed him. A light kiss, the merest brush of her lips on his, but he could feel her tremble as he slid his arms around her. “I am not whole without you.”

There was no tenderness in the kiss he returned to her, only hunger. Her mouth opened for his tongue. “No,” she said weakly when his lips moved down her neck, “not here. The septons…”

“The Others can take the septons.” He kissed her again, kissed her silent, kissed her until she moaned. Then he knocked the candles aside and lifted her up onto the Mother’s altar, pushing up her skirts and the silken shift beneath. She pounded on his chest with feeble fists, murmuring about the risk, the danger, about their father, about the septons, about the wrath of gods. He never heard her. He undid his breeches and climbed up and pushed her bare white legs apart. One hand slid up her thigh and underneath her smallclothes. When he tore them away, he saw that her moon’s blood was on her, but it made no difference.

“Hurry,” she was whispering now, “quickly, quickly, now, do it now, do me now. Jaime Jaime Jaime.” Her hands helped guide him. “Yes,” Cersei said as he thrust, “my brother, sweet brother, yes, like that, yes, I have you, you’re home now, you’re home now, you’re home.” She kissed his ear and stroked his short bristly hair. Jaime lost himself in her flesh. He could feel Cersei’s heart beating in time with his own, and the wetness of blood and seed where they were joined.

We don’t know why the writers chose to change that particular aspect of the book. Of course, there have been many alterations in the adaptation process. But the narrative turn to go from consensual sex to rape is an interesting one that has some viewers feeling turned off and many others feeling confused.

  • Watching HBO with Your Parents Is Just Too Awkward

HBO has just launched a new ad campaign for their on-demand streaming platform, HBO GO, and it’s great.

The main takeaway: Hey millennials–you really don’t want to watch HBO programming with your parents, right? Of course not, that’s why there’s HBO GO.

There are seven new ads, all of which show exactly why private, on-demand HBO watching is truly necessary.

In one, a father takes an awkward sex scene from Girls to tell his daughter that she has a choice, and it’s her body. In another, a father decides to share a little too much information about his past exploits with his son, prompted by a True Detective scene. In another ad, a mother sits down on the couch to “enjoy” a very awkward moment with her son.

Minor NSFW and spoiler content in some of these, just FYI.

  • “Game Of Thrones” Showrunners Talk Wedding Shocker (No Spoilers)

Game Of Thrones has become one of those shows that everyone is watching and talking about; like The Sopranos or Breaking Bad, it has grown to be an event every week that leaves fans jumping online as soon as it’s over to talk about what bloody storyline they just saw unfold. With a new season comes new shocks, and for those who haven’t read the books, the show is not pulling any punches when it comes to surprising deaths, and Sunday night’s episode was no exception. Another wedding has come, and with it, a horrific death and a whodunit mystery. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly recently to discuss why the episode worked, and why it was done the way it was done…in just the second episode of the season.

*This article contains no spoilers about Sunday night’s episode, so if you’re not caught up, by all means, read ahead.*

“By the time you get to the ninth episode, the end of the season, it’s expected that something momentous is going to happen. Doing something this world-changing in the second episode seemed fun to us,” said Weiss.

The wedding was full of lavish food and decor, powerful guests, and entertainment, and on an occasion so big the scene had to be a major focus. The trick, said Weiss, was to engage the viewer so that there would be no clues as to what was about to befall a major character.

“The trick with any long, lavish, production-heavy sequence like this one is that at a certain point, people start to think something: “It’s been 15 minutes in one setting, something momentous is going to happen in this sequence.” And the only way they don’t think that is if you constantly keep them engaged in the things that are happening. So one of the major tricks to pull off in a scene like this is to keep people in the moments with all the characters interacting with one another and not let them think about the bigger picture, about why we’ve been at this wedding for 15 minutes,” he said.

The last big shocking episode happened last season, and it was also during a wedding; that storyline left fans devastated, and resonated around the web as viewers took to social media to discuss what they’d just seen. That episode may have left many with a feeling of unease as soon as more nuptials were announced, but the people in charge didn’t necessarily want only shock value. The opportunity to bring so many characters together in one place was too good to pass up.

“One of the great opportunities about this scene is it’s probably the last time we’ll have this many characters for an extended period…what was also important to us is have these characters get together. Cersei and Brienne, they meet at the wedding, like they likely would, what is that conversation like? Jaime and Loras, that’s interesting because Loras is engaged to Cersei and Jamie has just returned from being a prisoner of war — so what’s the encounter going to be like? In the pilot we had something similar with a lot of people gathered together at the feast. But at that point the audience didn’t know those characters as well — and we didn’t know those characters as well,” said Benioff.

Game Of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO.

  • Rust Cohle Explains Time as a Flat Circle to Little Kids

Rust Cohle Explains Time as a Flat Circle to Little Kids

HBO’s True Detective ended its first season last month and when the credits rolled, it was clear that we had all just watched something singular–an experience that was going to have a profound effect on not only the future of scripted television, but pop culture.

I mean, television just hasn’t ever had a character quite like Rust Cohle.

If you watched the series (and even if you didn’t), you’re probably well-aware of Cohle’s philosophical musings. You’ve probably seen a grizzled Matthew McConaughey, sitting behind a table, drinking Lone Star beer and talking about how time is a flat circle.

Ok, now imagine that table was tiny and Cohle was talking to kids instead of detectives.

Comedian Ross Marquand makes this a reality in a spoof of those AT&T commercials–you know the ones. Watch out for a truly spectacular McConaughey impression.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Premiere Breaks Piracy Record

When the season four premiere of HBO’s fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones aired on Sunday night, a record 6.6 million viewers tuned in legally. Another million-plus viewers pirated the episode, setting another record. Jeff Bewkes, CEO of Time Warner, which owns HBO, called the new piracy record “better than an Emmy.”

The Sunday night episode entitled “Two Swords” garnered a number of viewers not seen since the series finale of HBO’s The Sopranos in 2007, and the level of piracy exceeded the previous record, which was held by the Game of Thrones season three premiere.

BitTorrent protocol blog TorrentFreak reported over a million downloads within 12 hours of “Two Swords” airing, with the majority of the torrents being shared in Australia. Naturally, due to HBO’s subscription-only status, piracy is rampant. Though another contributing factor was the crashing of HBO’s streaming service, HBO Go, due to overwhelming demand.

Here is the Game of Thrones season 4 trailer:

Game of Thrones was created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. The series is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a set of fantasy novels penned by George R. R. Martin. The complex storyline is set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decade-long summer, and concerns the dealings of several noble families in a civil war over the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Sex and violence prevail, as an army of zombie-like creatures gain strength in the northern reaches of the fantasy realm.

Torrent downloads in the United States came in behind those in Australia at 9.3%. File sharing was also significant in the United Kingdom, Canada, The Netherlands, Philippines, India, Greece, Poland and Sweden. HBO has roughly 114 million legal subscribers worldwide, and has also made Sunday night’s GOT episode free to XBOX live users.

  • Game Of Thrones Returns Sunday For Season 4

Anyone who loves boobs, butts, incest, weird cross-generational sexual tension, the death and/or bodily harm of any of the following: friends, mentors, enemies, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, lovers, brothers SLASH lovers, the inalienable right to breastfeed grown children in mixed company, hot human-dragon matriarchs, violent creatures of icy temperature/disposition, and the universal hatred of winter in general, be sure to tune in to HBO tomorrow for the premiere of Game of Thrones: Season 4. If for some unfathomable reason you haven’t been keeping up with this series, I offer the following summation of Seasons 1-3 to offset your ignorance:

    Season 1

We open (note: this is not how Season 1 opens) on a beautiful young teenager taking a bath (Naked! Get used to it.) in super hot water (This is called a clue, or for more advanced viewers who may have majored in comparative literature, foreshadowing!). There are dragon eggs/babies somewhere. Expect adolescent dragons in Season 4. This is important.

There is a nice family in a castle to which you will become very attached. They all die, except for the daughters and one son. He is paralyzed after being pushed to his non-death by a pair of siblings who are somehow related to this nice family and also are doing it, together, in secret. Incest has never looked this good, people.

    Season 2

The Dad dies. Sean Bean dies. This is the same person. This is all you need to know about Season 2 (this may have happened at the end of Season 1). Also, everyone is hot in Season 2. Everyone is also hot in Season 1. This makes everything altogether more interesting.

Jon Snow, who knows nothing and is most definitely Ned Stark’s (aka The Dad’s) bastard, is basically banished to this place called the Wall, which is this huge wall where it’s always snowing. All you need to know is anything called the Wall/the North sucks, and anything called Jon Snow knows nothing.

PS – There is an evil boy child named Joffrey who has power that’s gone to his head, and no one seems to mention how weird it is that this prepubescent nightmare gives his snide commands with a cracking voice and probably zero pit hair. First: grow up, and then start ordering around your elders/betters. Ugh. You will hate Joffrey.

    Season 3

Have I not mentioned Tyrion Lannister? Tyrion Lannister, played by the brilliant Peter Dinklage (uncultured people will know him as the kinda mean children’s book author from Elf, the cherished Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell) is the smartest, funniest, most-skilled-at-survival character in GoT (this is what cool people call Game of Thrones in shorthand). He is, ah, a bit loose in the sexual sense, however makes up for it by having a heart of gold, being a total wino, and spouting witty remarks that sound better when he says them, so don’t try to quote him. You will never look/be as suave as Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, so stop trying.

Warning: There is something called The Red Wedding that happens at the end of Season 3. In a ground-breaking interactive scene pioneered by the amazing folks at HBO HQ, everyone on the show that you love dies, including all the fans of GoT who have been literally sucked into their television sets and are guests at this wedding (I don’t remember whose wedding it is — this is irrelevant information that will only fill your head with unimportant details). The mom dies, the son and his cute wife die, and you also die.

If anything above is of interest to you, catch Season 4 of Game of Thrones Sunday at 9:00 pm EST on HBO. If you perhaps do not have cable but DO have an older brother who accidentally left his HBOGO account logged in the last time he visited from California, be sure to watch on Monday, which if I remember correctly from my legally obtained HBOGO subscription, is when episodes post online.

Having paid special attention to this guide, you will have no trouble getting up to speed with all the happenings in Westeros (Westeros, I should have mentioned, and that’s on me, is where this entire show takes place, sort of).

Happy thoroughly-informed and prepped watching, everybody!

  • Gwendoline Christie Will Replace Lily Rabe In “Mockingay-Part 2”

The worlds of Game Of Thrones and The Hunger Games will be emerging with the latest casting of Gwendoline Christie. She will be replacing Lily Rabe as Commander Lyme in the final installment of the Hunger Games series.

Gwendoline Christie is now set to take over the role of Lyme, one of the leaders of District 13 who was a past victor in the Hunger Games, hailing originally from District 2. Fans of the series have not even seen Rabe in the role yet, but she has already been replaced.

Lily Rabe was forced to drop out of the final film of the series, but she will be seen in Mockingjay-Part 1, which will be released later this year. She left the last film due to a scheduling conflict, and she had a previous commitment to perform Much Ado about Nothing opposite Hamish Linklater at Shakespeare in the Park this summer in New York.

Game Of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on television, and likely helped with Christie getting the role. Season 4 of the series premieres on April 6th, as fans everywhere get ready for the new season.

The first two films have already been wildly successful, and have earned over $1.5 billion worldwide. The series has also turned Jennifer Lawrence into one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and unrelated to the film, she also received an Academy Award nomination in 2013 and 2014.

The death of Phillip Seymour Hffman also brought his role in the series into question, and it was discussed how to replace him, or if the films will be delayed. Luckily for fans of the series, they will still be keeping their original release dates, but it will also be emotional without Hoffman in the final films.

Gwendoline Christie is known for her role as the warrior Brienne of Tarth on Game Of Thrones. She is likely to bring her aggressive skills as a warrior in the violent HBO series to the big screen, and be able to deliver a special performance as two of the biggest fantasy series connect. One actress from Game Of Thrones, Natalie Dormer, had already been chosen to join the Hunger Games series.

The final two installments of The Hunger Games series are currently being shot in Atlanta, and will switch production to Paris and Berlin later this year, where the filming of the franchise will conclude.

Are Game Of Thrones fans excited to see Gwendoline Christie heading to the big screen? Lionsgate will release Mockingjay – Part 1 on Nov. 21, 2014 with Mockingjay – Part 2 due to come out the following year.

  • True Blood Prepares To Air Final Season This June, Debuts Trailer

True Blood Prepares To Air Final Season This June, Debuts Trailer

Several shows have been coming to an end in the past year, and True Blood is another show that will be added to the list. In order to get fans excited for the show’s final season, HBO has released its first promo.

Mad Men is also set to end this year, with its seventh season premiering in a couple weeks. After nine years on the year, How I Met Your Mother also came to an end this week, and its finale was received with mixed reactions by its many fans.

True Blood premiered the same season as AMC’s Mad Men, and will be ending with its seventh, and final season, with the beginning of the end set to premiere on June 22, 2014. HBO’s final season of True Blood will contain 10 episodes.

The series is a vampire drama, but has a much more widespread audience than shows such as The Vampire Diaries. The plot involves a telepathic waitress named Sookie Stackhouse who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill, a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

In addition to the final season of True Blood premiering on June 22, the network announced that will be airing the series premiere of The Leftovers on June 15th, a show that is based on a book by Tom Perrotta. The show is being developed by Damon Lindelof, who many will remember as one of the producers of Lost, and features an ensemble cast that includes Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler.

The first promotional video that has been released for the series opens with a trip through the Bon Temps graveyard, showing numerous headstones, and reminding fans of all of the different people that have died throughout the show.

The sequence ends on a headstone that reads “True Blood, 2008-2014,” in a moment that could trigger some emotion from fans. The series stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, and features an ensemble cast that has helped Alexander Skarsgård become a star in recent years.

Speaking on the final season of the show, Stephen Moyer said last year that “I’m really excited, really sad. It’s just a group of people that I absolutely love and it’s certainly the happiest and warmest set I’ve ever been on, so that’s going to be hard to walk away from.”

Tune into HBO on June 22 at 9 p.m. ET for the first of the final 10 episodes of HBO’s True Blood. Are fans excited for the show to return, or is everyone simply sad that it is almost over?

  • Game of Thrones: Supercut of Every Death Reminds Us That All Men Must Die

All men must die, and there’s been a lot to confirm that sentiment in the first three seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones. If Game of Thrones weren’t such a fantastic show and actually needed to market itself to an unsure viewing audience, it could market itself as the only place, short of the internet, where you can see so many grisly deaths followed by boobs eyebleach. Sex and death–a classic combination so expertly exploited by Game of Thrones.

We’ve discussed the sex before, and now here’s the death. Digg has compiled this awesome three-minute supercut of every single (on-screen) death in the first three seasons of Game of Thrones.

What more do I need to say? Get to watching.

Remember, folks, it’s Game of Thrones weekend! The season four premiere airs on Sunday night. You ready?

  • Amazon Fire TV Launches Sans HBO Go

Amazon Fire TV Launches Sans HBO Go

As you may have heard, Amazon stepped onto the streaming video device stage in a huge way today with the unveiling of their $99 Fire TV, their new set-top box.

At launch, Amazon Fire TV boasts a bunch of third-party apps alongside its own Amazon Prime Instant Video-including Netflix, Hulu, Showtime Anytime, Pandora, and Watch ESPN. But there is one incredibly popular streaming video app that is absent from the Fire TV’s launch list…

    HBO Go.

Yep, at least for now, there’s no HBO Go app on the Fire TV. They did know that they launched this thing a few days before the new season of Game of Thrones, correct?

In reality, this shouldn’t be too much of a shocker to anyone. HBO Go is notoriously slow to appear on many a streaming device. Amazon Fire TV will eventually get HBO Go-it’s simply too popular of a service to exclude from your app lineup. But at least for the time being, Amazon Fire TV purchasers are going to have to live without HBO’s superior content.

Unless, of course, they simply choose to buy it from Amazon Instant Video. I guess this is what Amazon is suggesting, considering their Fire TV product page is littered with visual references to HBO shows like Game of Thrones and Girls.

I’m doubting a lack of HBO Go will be a complete dealbreaker for many prospective buyers, but it is a pretty big omission. If you simply can’t live without HBO content and are in the market for a streaming device, Google’s Chromecast, at just $35, looks like a more attractive option at this point.

  • Game of Thrones Honest Trailer Is Not Suitable for Sean Bean

If you haven’t watched seasons one through three of HBO’s Game of Thrones, first of all shame on you. Second, don’t watch this honest trailer. Everything that you’d ever want not spoiled is spoiled. Just don’t watch it.

If you’re still here, good. The Game of Thrones honest trailer (via Screen Junkies) is my favorite type of honest trailer–the struglling to actually find something bad to say about it honest trailer. Screen Junkies had the same problem when they made the honest trailer for Jurassic Park. Seriously, how the hell are you going to find much to complain about with GoT?

Well, there’s the Sean Bean thing. It’s so sad, really. Someone give that guy a break-or at least a full season run on something.

Check it out below. Remember, Game of Thrones returns to primetime HBO this Sunday. I hope I make it to Sunday, but the weight of my own expectations is currently threatening to explode my heart.

  • Game of Thrones New Chapter Released

Game of Thrones creator, George R.R. Martin, has thrown red meat to the GoT faithful by releasing an excerpt from his upcoming sixth Game of Thrones installment The Winds of Winter.

The chapter was posted on Martin’s website and is called “Mercy”. The chapter begins:

She woke with a gasp, not knowing who she was, or where.

The smell of blood was heavy in her nostrils… or was that her nightmare, lingering? She had dreamed of wolves again, of running through some dark pine forest with a great pack at her hells, hard on the scent of prey.

Martin has called the chapter an “old” passage. “But not one I’ve published or posted before, and I don’t even think I’ve read it at a con.”

Earlier this year, Martin released an excerpt that featured Tyrion Lannister. But this newest snip is vintage Martin, with the wordcraft that fans have come to expect.

The mists seemed to part before her and close up again as she passed. The cobblestones were wet and slick under her feet. She heard a cat yowl plaintively. Braavos was a good city for cats, and they roamed everywhere, especially at night. In the fog all cats are grey, Mercy thought. In the fog all men are killers.

And, not to reveal more than one might want to know here, but there is this jewel.

Raff the Sweetling looked up sharply as the long thin blade came sliding from her sleeve. She slipped it through his throat beneath the chin, twisted, and ripped it back out sideways with a single smooth slash. A fine red rain followed, and in his eyes the light went out.

“Valar morghulis,” Arya whispered, but Raff was dead and did not hear.

HBO’s Game of Thrones returns on April 6.
