  • Google Now Facing Third Suit, As 30 State Sue Over ‘Illegal Monopoly’

Google Now Facing Third Suit, As 30 State Sue Over ‘Illegal Monopoly’

Google is being sued by 30 states, as the company faces its third lawsuit over abusing its monopoly in search and online advertising.

Google is already facing lawsuits by the Department of Justice (DOJ), as well as a coalition of 10 states. The new lawsuit is led by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, and includes Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico.

“Our economy is more concentrated than ever, and consumers are squeezed when they are deprived of choices in valued products and services. Google’s anticompetitive actions have protected its general search monopolies and excluded rivals, depriving consumers of the benefits of competitive choices, forestalling innovation, and undermining new entry or expansion,” Weiser explained. “This lawsuit seeks to restore competition.”

The scope of this lawsuit goes beyond the previous two, accusing Google of “engaging in a multi-pronged effort to maintain its monopolies.” In particular, “Google’s acquisition and command of vast amounts of data obtained because of consumers’ lack of choice has fortified Google’s monopolies and created new barriers to competition and consumer value.”

The states have filed a motion to join their case with the DOJ’s case, which could significantly expand the scope of the DOJ’s case.

  • Police Release Google Cloud Manager Accused of Murdering Wife

Police Release Google Cloud Manager Accused of Murdering Wife

Hawaiian police have released Sonam Saxena, a Google Cloud product manager, following his arrest for second-degree murder in relation to the death of his wife.

Saxena and his wife Smriti were on vacation on the Big Island Hawaii with their two children. According to an interview Saxena gave to reporters prior to his arrest, his wife had an asthma attack on the beach, prompting him to go back to the hotel to retrieve her inhaler. By the time he got back at the beach, Saxena said his wife was missing and filed a missing person report.

The next morning a woman’s body was found near the beach, leading police to arrest Saxena for second-degree murder. Friday, two days later, “after conferring with prosecutors, Sonam Saxena was released pending investigation,” says a statement on the department’s website. “Detectives with the Area II Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this investigation.”

The police continue to ask for anyone who has information, or may have been in the area at the time of the events, to come forward.

  • Isla Fisher Shows Off Baby Bump During Family Trip To Hawaii

Isla Fisher and her family have been vacationing in Hawaii for the past 10 days. The star was photographed walking along the beach with her husband Sacha Baron Cohen. Fisher, who was clearly having fun during the trip, also sported a growing baby bump. “The two seemed really relaxed,” an eyewitness told E! News. “They were just enjoying some family time. The two were with their daughter.” The eyewitness added, “Isla and Sacha enjoyed walking on the beach together. The two showed off some PDA by kissing, but nothing over the top.”

Cohen and Fisher are already parents to 7-year-old Olive and 4-year-old Elula. News about Fisher’s third pregnancy first broke out in September. Fisher has always made it a point to put her family first.

In an interview with Gotham magazine, she said, “Even when you don’t take your kids with you, your mind and heart are busy with them. You’re doing the most important, incredible thing.”

The star also doesn’t mind taking a break from making movies to raise her family. Fisher famously took 3 years off of filming after having her first two daughters. Ever since then, she decided she wanted to take on supporting roles in order to spend more time with her family.

“Family is 100 per cent my top priority. So I’m much more comfortable doing supporting roles right now,” Fisher told The Daily Telegraph back in 2013. She adds, “And often, they’re the most interesting. You get to be a character actress.”

Fisher recently dropped out of filming the sequel for the film Now You See Me when she found out that she was pregnant with her third child. She has since been replaced by Lizzie Caplan. Now You See Me: The Second Act will feature returning cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Woody Harrelson.

  • Hawaii: Earthquakes And Hurricanes, Oh My!

As Hawaii braces for a hurricane, it is also recovering from an earthquake that struck Thursday. The quake measured a 4.5 on the Richter scale and struck near Waimea on the eastern shore of the Big Island.

The earthquake was strong enough to cause shaking in some parts of the state, but not strong enough to cause a tsunami.

Although the earthquake scared many of the residents, most of them remained focused on preparing for the hurricanes that are headed their way. One hurricane was expected to hit by Friday evening and another will make its way to the islands over the weekend.

Residents of Hawaii have been advised to stock up on food and water and to prepare their home for the hurricanes. Many residents have spent the last few days securing outside belongings, finding shelter for pets and of course, stocking up on the necessities.

Several of the stores and customers reported that bottled water was scarce, as were many food items.

Hawaii has not been hit by a hurricane in over 20 years. Many hotels and businesses plan to close over the weekend and most visitors have rescheduled trips to the islands. Some tourists had to end their vacations early so they could catch their flights before the storm hit.

“We’re very worried,” said one resident and hotel owner. “We are prepared to evacuate if we have to.”

Officials have warned those who are close to the water to evacuate the area and head for higher ground or to find shelter at a location closer to the center of the islands.

  • Hawaii Kayaker Lucky To Be Alive

The Coast Guard is saying a man is lucky to be alive after he attempted to travel from California to Hawaii in a kayak.

The 57-year-old man left Monterey on May 30 and planned on making the 2,400 mile journey to Hawaii in only a kayak.

The craft he was paddling was equipped with a solar panel to power the electronics on board. However, 8 days into the trip, the solar panel malfunctioned and the man turned around to head back to California.

On June 10, the man realized that he was not capable of making the trip back in his kayak, and sent up a distress signal. “A distress call was made on June 10th as the man started to become disoriented,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

After locating the distress signal, a MH-65 helicopter was sent from Los Angeles to find the man. The helicopter spotted him approximately 60 miles southwest of Santa Barbara’s Point Conception, and directed the USCG Cutter Aspen to pick him up. When they finally reached him, the man was found in good health and with no injuries.

“A voyage from California to Hawaii is a long and treacherous journey for any vessel and exponentially more dangerous for a kayaker,” Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Timothy Hall said. Hall says that being prepared, and having the distress signal on board, saved his life. “His preparedness allowed him to call for help but he is very lucky to be alive.”

  • Tanith Belbin And Ice Skater Boyfriend Charlie White Get Engaged In Hawaii

Olympic gold medalist and Dancing with the Stars alum Charlie White, 26, is finally engaged to girlfriend of five years, ice dancer Tanith Belbin, 29.

White posted a picture on Instagram on Monday with the caption “Couldn’t ask for a more beautiful setting for the best time in our life! Hashtag she said yes!!!” White popped the question while they were in Hawaii for a vacation.

In the photo Tanith can be seen wearing a dazzling new diamond engagement ring on her finger.

White has been busy the past year. He and his professional dancing partner, Meryl Davis, who also competed and won Dancing with the Stars, won the gold medal in ice dancing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Many have speculated that White and Davis are together, but Davis has also been linked to her Dancing with the Stars partner, Maks Chmerkovskiy. Davis congratulated her dancing partner on Twitter, “Congrats to these two! Beautiful girl, beautiful (ring). Good work @CharlieaWhite.”

According to Belbin, she does not mind that people assume White and Davis are together. In March, White said in an interview that Belbin gets it. “She won the silver medal in 2006 with her partner Ben Agosto, and people were always like, ‘Are you guys dating?’ It’s just something you get as dancers. Her understanding makes my life so much easier.” Two weeks ago, White thanked his girlfriend and their puppy and wrote, “The past 6 months have been the craziest of my life and I can honestly say there’s no way I would have survived without these two. 5 years together, but it only feels like 5 days.”

The news of White and Belbin’s engagement stole the spotlight from Davis and Chmerkovskiy, even if just for a bit. Rumors about Davis and Chmerkovskiy dating started to emerge during the last season of Dancing with the Stars, and even became more widespread when the season ended. With the engagement news, fans on Twitter congratulated the couple, while some were disappointed that White is engaged to Belbin and not Davis. One user wrote, “possibly the most devastating news this morning is charlie white is engaged to not meryl davis.”

  • Scott Caan, Girlfriend Expecting First Child

Scott Caan and girlfriend Kacy Byxbee are expecting their first child together, his rep confirmed to Us Weekly.

“They haven’t been keeping it private really, she’s just been working on her business with her family so she hasn’t been around,” a source told Us. “She’s expecting very soon.”

Family, friends and her sisters feted the coming baby by offering Byxbee a baby shower last weekend in L.A., said the source.

The Hawaii Five-O star talked about his relationship with Byxbee during an appearance on Chelsea Lately in January 2013.

“She should get the purple heart because I’m a complete disaster,” he said.

The couple live together in Hawaii so Caan can shoot Hawaii Five-O. However, the 37-year-old hottie said the “relaxed” nature and lack of “hustle” in Hawaii — where the couple first met — isn’t exactly his idea of paradise.

“Everything’s very slow-motion. I pick up the cup and they slowly pick of the cup,” he joked.

This will be the first child for the couple who have been together for a “couple of years.”

Scott’s father, James Caan, is said to be very excited to become a grandfather.

“His dad James is really close with him,” the insider told Us. “He is very excited.”

  • Stowaway’s Mom Seeking Sponsor To Reunite With Son

A Somalian stowaway’s mom was shocked and relieved to learn her son had stolen into the wheel well of a U.S. flight Sunday to try and reach her – and survived.

15-year-old Yahya Abdi jumped a barbed-wire fence at San Jose International Airport while it was still dark and hid in the wheel well of the most proximate plane, which was heading to Hawaii. The teen, who was attempting to fly to Somalia to see his mother, discovered recently she was still alive. This news came after his father had reportedly lied to him about her passing away in a Mogadishu rocket attack years ago.

Following a disagreement with his father and stepmother, the boy left home and walked three miles to the San Jose airport, at which point he hopped the fence. It was indicated by aviation experts that Abdi plausibly entered a “hibernation” state during the five hour flight, allowing him to survive the 38,000 ft. altitudes and as much as 85 degrees below zero temperatures.

The incident caused many to raise questions regarding airline security. Employees meant to monitor security screens are simultaneously issued various other tasks, opening up the opportunity for breaches like these.

Images on the cameras in Maui captured Yahya’s feet dangling from the wheel well, him weaving side to side on the tarmac after landing, and him asking a baggage handler for water. Maui airport manager Marvin Moniz relayed his conversation with the boy after having gotten him food and water:

“I said, you know, ‘How did you get on that airplane?’ He says, ‘Well, I jumped the fence.’ So I tried to ask him was this a wooden fence? A chain-link fence? And he says, ‘Oh well, I just saw some cars parked in a corner and I went over there and I jumped the fence.’”

His mother, Ubah Mohamed Abdullahi, currently living in an Ethiopian refugee camp, blames his father and stepmother for treating him poorly and lying to him about her death. This news is the first she’s heard about her son in six years. Following her divorce from Yahya’s father in 2008 and their move to the U.S., she lost contact with the family. Ubah described how she had tried desperately to reach her children, but the father barred any contact. She explained:

“We are divorced. I called him several times through his relatives and he refused to talk to me.”

She went on to say, “I felt bad that he risked his life… I was told that he did this because of me.” In an interview with VOA, she pleaded: “I want to hear the voice of my children. I want to see them, please help me.”

Ubah is now in the process of getting a sponsor so she can come to the United States. Friday reports indicated that Yahya was still in a Honolulu hospital with continued respiration complications.

Healing thoughts go out to Yahya – along with well wishes on his journey to reunite with his mom. Until that time arrives, her advice is no different than our own moms might give us:

“I am still alive and I will come one day. Please stay calm and do not do anything stupid.”

  • ‘X-Men’ Director Named in Teen Sex Abuse Lawsuit

A lawsuit filed on Wednesday has accused X-Men film franchise director Bryan Singer of sexually abusing a teenage male 15 years ago. According to a civil suit filed in U.S. District Court in Hawaii, Singer had offered the 17-year-old aspiring actor a role in an X-Men film, and likewise threatened to destroy his career, if the teen failed to acknowledge the director’s sexual advances.

Jeff Herman, the attorney who filed the suit, chose Hawaii, as that state had enacted legislature allowing for old sex abuse cases to be filed. Though, the window for these claims closes next week, right in time for Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, which hits theaters in May.

The lawsuit details alleged sex abuse incidents that occurred in 1998 and 1999, mostly during parties at a California mansion, when the plaintiff was 17. The suit alleges that other casting couch scenarios occurred during two visits to Hawaii, adding that Singer “manipulated his power, wealth, and position in the entertainment industry to sexually abuse and exploit the underage Plaintiff through the use of drugs, alcohol, threats and inducements which resulted in Plaintiff suffering catastrophic psychological and emotional injuries.”

Here is the final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past:

The lawsuit adds that Singer “promised acting roles to Plaintiff in an X-Men movie, in commercials, and in other of his projects, and professed that he would arrange for Plaintiff to audition for roles and projects in others’ productions.”

A representative for Singer commented, “We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit. It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan’ s new movie is about to open in a few weeks.” The representative added that the accusations were “completely without merit.”

The $250 million X-Men: Days of Future Past has an all-star cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Peter Dinklage and Michael Fassbender, and opens on May 23.

  • Britney Spears: Will She Tie The Knot In Hawaii?

Could wedding bells be ringing in the near future for Britney Spears?

There are reports that Spears is hoping to be married to boyfriend David Lucado in Hawaii. Lucado and Spears have been together for about a year now, a stretch of time which usually sees nuptials right around the corner.

A source told British magazine Heat that Hawaii seemed the most logical destination for the 32-year-old singer should Lucado pop the question.

“Hawaii is her favorite vacation destination,” the insider said. “Britney, David and her two sons took their spring break trip to the island of Oahu and stayed at the Aulani Disney Resort.”

Some even went as far as to speculate as the Spears family’s trip to Hawaii was a test run for an upcoming wedding!

This is merely the latest in a growing number of wedding rumors. Others gossiped that it’s possible Spears will be getting married at Graceland, the famous estate of legendary singer Elvis Presley.

RadarOnline heard this from yet another insider who told the online gossip site, “Getting married at the home of the late king of rock and roll in an elegant Southern-style ceremony would certainly generate one-of-a-kind pictures that Brit already plans to make the front page of magazines around the world.”

The source seemed positive that Spears would opt for Elvis’s estate for a more pragmatic reason: Family.

As Britney is a southern diva, it would make it fairly easy for her extended family to make the trip and see her married in style. While that explanation makes sense, it’s highly unlikely her family members would be disappointed to book a flight to a luxurious Hawaiian destination for her wedding.

What location will Britney Spears choose: Graceland or Hawaii?

Only time will tell as this is merely speculation courtesy of unnamed sources. It could be that Spears and Lucado never marry. If they do tie the knot, the pair may surprise us all with the location they choose for their wedding ceremony.

  • Kauai Stranded Hikers Rescued on Kalalau Trail

Fast-moving high water in a stream along the Kalalau Trail on the Hawaiian island of Kauai stranded 121 hikers from Hanakapi’ai Beach on Sunday. The Kauai Fire Department was able to launch a rescue, and completed evacuating the tourists Monday morning.

After authorities were alerted of the stranded hikers, a rescue effort was coordinated at 4 p.m. The first 23 of those stranded were airlifted out Sunday, until nightfall made it too hazardous to continue with the helicopter operation. The additional 98 hikers were transported out of the park by Monday morning. No injuries were reported.

The Kalalau Trail runs along the Nā Pali Coast on the island of Kauai. The trail is moderately difficult and spans roughly 11 miles along Kauai’s north shore from Keʻe Beach to the Kalalau Valley. Only experienced hikers can complete the 22-mile trek within a day, so most backpackers camp along the trail. At present, camping is only permitted on the beach at Hanakoa Valley at the six mile mark, and at Kalalau Beach.

Here is a clip regarding the trail:

Access to the trail is limited due to conservation efforts, and a set number of permits are issued for camping in Kalalau Valley annually. Regardless of the efforts of the state of Hawaii, many hikers camp at Kalalau Beach without permits.

Officials reported that several children were among those stranded on Sunday, including an 18-month-old. A 12-year-old boy was swept downstream by the swollen creek, but managed to get atop some rocks, where he was stuck for over four hours before being rescued.

Two firefighters stayed overnight with the 98 hikers that weren’t rescued on Sunday, and led them to a safer area at Hanakapi’ai Beach. Fire Chief John Blalock commented, “When possible, firefighters will hike in to the valley to assist stranded hikers in crossing the river safely, so that they can hike out if they are able. But in this case, hazardous conditions made it impossible to get anyone across. To avoid serious injury or death, we urged everyone to shelter in place until they could be flown back to the trail head. We are very pleased to report that everyone made it back safely.”

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Kalalau Trail at the Ke’e Beach entrance until further notice.

  • Heather Locklear Vacations with Richie Sambora

Actress Heather Locklear and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora were spotted walking the beach together in Kona, Hawaii on Sunday. After being married for 13 years, the two divorced in 2007, though have maintained an amicable relationship. The two have one daughter together, Ava, who is 16.

The divorce made headlines after Sambora, 54, began dating Charlie Sheen ex Denise Richards, shortly after his separation from Locklear. Richards and Locklear were close friends at the time, which added insult to injury. Locklear, 52, went on to start a relationship with Melrose Place costar Jack Wagner, which lasted 4 years.

Locklear is best known for her television roles as Sammy Jo Carrington on Dynasty, Officer Stacy Sheridan on T.J. Hooker, Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place and as Caitlin Moore on Spin City.

Both Locklear and Sambora have seen substance abuse-related mishaps over the years, and both have been arrested for driving under the influence, as well as checking into rehab facilities. In March, 2008 Locklear’s doctor called 911 claiming that he thought his patient was suicidal, but emergency personnel deemed the actress to be fine upon arriving at her Westlake Village home.

In January, 2012 Locklear’s sister called the authorities, believing the actress was in danger after ingesting alcohol along with prescription medication. Locklear spent some time at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California after the incident.

Also in March, 2008 Sambora was arrested for driving under the influence in Laguna Beach. Daughter Ava, who was ten, was a passenger in the vehicle at the time.

Locklear and Sambora were both able to recover. Locklear is now featured on TNT’s legal comedy-drama Franklin & Bash, and Sambora was allowed to bring his talkbox back on tour with Bon Jovi.

  • Dental Coma After Woman Has Teeth Pulled

Dental Coma After Woman Has Teeth Pulled

A mother in Hawaii is in a coma following an appointment to have her wisdom teeth taken out.

The New York Daily News reports that Kristen Tavares, 23, of Hilo, Hawaii, went into cardiac arrest during surgery by Dr. John Stover, her dentist. They also report that Dr. Stover has had 4 complaints filed against him since 2010 for other dental and medical violations.

According to Tavares’ boyfriend, Chauncey Prudencio, she was in the middle of the procedure to have her wisdom teeth removed when she went into cardiac arrest. The team on site used a defibrillator to restart her heart, and she was flown to a hospital. She is still in a coma and on a breathing machine. Her brain is swollen and her heart is too weak for any other medical procedures.

Tavares and Prudencio have two children together, the youngest of which is only 3 months old.

Two of the complaints that had been filed against Dr. Stover in the past have ended up being dismissed for lack of evidence. The other two are recent enough to still be pending investigation.

Stover did have the proper permits to use full anesthesia in his practice.

There are two common reasons why something like this might happen. A patient is lying on his back during such a procedure. There is always the possibility that a tooth or other piece of material, such as gauze, might fall into the patient’s airway and block it.

Another has to do with the procedures of and before anesthesia is administered. There is a certain amount of time that anesthesiologists will wait after a person has eaten before administering anesthesia. A patient could vomit up stomach contents and end up with fluid in their airway or lungs.

The Portland Press Herald reported a mysterious death of a local teen whose condition deteriorated after he had oral surgery. Even in such a case as that, the frequency of death due to surgical complications is very low. Any complications, such as allergic reactions to medications, only occur in 2 or 3 out of every 100,000 cases.

  • Internet Sales Tax Battle Moves To The States

Last year, Congress began the debate on whether or not it should implement a federal Internet sales tax. After passing the Senate, it has stalled in the House where Speaker John Boehner has publicly said he wouldn’t support it. Now the fight is moving to individual states and it gives us insight into the challenges facing Congress.

The AP reports that Hawaii is the latest state attempting to pass an Internet sales tax bill. The bill is already halfway to the finish line as the House of Representatives have already passed it, but now it moves onto the Senate.

Just like the national debate on a universal Internet sales tax, Hawaiian legislators are finding that it’s a series of pros and cons. On one hand, an Internet sales tax mandate would bring in money to fund state projects. On the other, it would be another tax on an already overtaxed population.

Do you think a national sales tax bill is the way to go? Or should it be a state only affair? Let us know in the comments.

Starting with sales tax proponents, they feel that an Internet sales tax is just one way to adapt to a changing world. Hawaii state Rep. Kyle Yamashita says that it’s the government’s “responsibility to adapt as times change, markets change, trends change.” He goes on further to state that the state has to figure out how to “maintain [its] revenues” as the Internet becomes more popular.

Another proponent, Rep. Rida Cabanilla, says that an Internet sales tax would help the state take care of its debt while funding its mandates. She even goes as far to say that it’s an “obligation to future generations.”

As expected, there are plenty of people opposed to an Internet sales tax as well. Rep. Gene Ward notes that Hawaii is in a unique position of having to import food and other essentials. If an Internet sales tax was implemented, those who rely on the Internet to purchase the essentials would face undue burdens.

Another opponent, Rep. Bob McDermott, sums up the average citizen’s views pretty well. He says that he hasn’t “had one person come into [his] office and say, ‘Please, whatever you do this session, tax my online purchase.’”

While the above arguments all come from state legislators, it’s an almost perfect reflection of the current climate in Washington. Taxes are incredibly unpopular and people moved to the Internet to avoid said taxes. Now lawmakers are wanting to close what has always just been a loophole to bring more sales tax revenue in. The only problem is that passage is almost impossible on the federal level so we might just see the fights move to the state level this year.

Hawaii is not the first state to grapple with an Internet sales tax and some others have even already passed bills. New York passed a bill in 2008 that required online retailers to collect sales tax in the state even if they were only tangentially related to an in-state retailer. Amazon found itself running afoul of this law and tried to sue only to have the Supreme Court smack down its lawsuit.

The Amazon case is going to be one of the more prominent problems facing states as they explore Internet sales tax laws. As more online retailers expand, they may find themselves cooperating with a business in another state and find that they have to collect sales tax for that despite not technically having a physical presence in said state. Will states make an exception for them or will they use the Amazon case as basis to go full in on charging an Internet sales tax?

Despite Amazon being the target of many Internet sales tax bills, states will also have to keep the small business in mind. A report from last year found that the federal Internet sales tax bill would exempt small businesses making less than $1 million annually from collecting sales tax. Many groups argue this exemption is too little and would harm many small businesses. When writing bills, state legislators will have to closely examine how the bill would affect the growing number of small businesses in their state and how to best protect them from the expensive task of collecting sales tax from more than 40 states.

On a final note, states might not even have to bother with passing an Internet sales tax bill. It’s pretty obvious the primary target in all of this is Amazon, but the online retailer is already collecting sales tax in over half the U.S. The current federal law states that a retailer must collect sales tax in the state if it has a physical presence in said state. Amazon has used this as leverage to support its building of fulfillment centers in various states across the country. The retailer agrees to bring jobs to the state and pay sales tax in return for other tax cuts and subsidies.

As the Internet sales tax battle moves to the state, legislators would be wise to keep all of this in mind. They might find that it’s best to work with online retailers to bring their business (and jobs) to the state instead of just forcing them to pay online sales tax.

Should states continue where the federal government left off? Or should they work together with online retailers to solve the sales tax problem? Let us know in the comments.

  • Google Gets More Hawaii Street View Imagery

Back in 2012, Google added some stunning imagery from the Hawaiian Islands to Street View. Today, the company announced the addition of more.

The new imagery comes as a result of the Trekker Loan Program Google announced last summer, which lets organizations borrow Google’s Trekker backpack camera device to capture imagery for Street View.

The program’s first partner was the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB), which has been collecting Street View imagery of “many popular and special places across the islands of Hawaii (the Big Island) and Oahu” according to Google.

“Hawaii is famous for its spectacular sandy beaches, like Hapunua Beach, but this tropical island paradise has much more to offer to all the outdoor adventurers out there,” writes Google’s Evan Rapoport in a blog post. “Hike through a volcanic crater along the Kilauea Iki Trail, learn about Native Hawaiian culture at the Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs, and take in the diverse flora at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.”

Google says search interest in “Hawaii” has risen by 78 percent over the last 30 days.

Google is also adding more underwater imagery to Street View for Sydney.

  • Lanai Plane Crash Leaves 3 Passengers Dead

Shortly after taking off from Hawaii’s Lanai Airport on Wednesday evening, a twin-engine plane crashed and burst into flames, killing the pilot and two passengers, both employees of the Department of Planning. Three other passengers were injured: two are also from the Department of Planning and the other is the Corporation Counsel’s deputy attorney. The Corporation Counsel provides legal services for Maui County.

The group had attended a Lanai Planning Commission meeting earlier on Wednesday. They had contracted Maui Air for a return flight.

According to Maui County spokesman Rod Antone, the plane was about a mile from the airport when it crashed at around 9:30 in the evening on Wednesday. Ian Gregor, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration, said that the Piper PA31 plane burned upon impact. There are still no details about how the crash occurred.

The crash site was located a mile southwest of the airport. According to Lanai Times editor Alberta de Jetley, the site was off a dirt road near the power plant of the Maui Electric Co., and is mostly flat grassland.

According to a statement released by Maui County officials on Thursday, the deputy attorney was the one who called 911 for help. He had managed to pull two of the planning employees away from the fire because they were unable to move on their own. The three suffered burn injuries and were airlifted to a hospital in Honolulu.

Inter-island travel is common in Maui County, where departments are spread over various areas, such as Lanai Island and Molokai. Lanai representative Sen. J. Kalani English said that Hawaii has very safe airports and flight routes, but the risk of accidents is high for frequent flyers, including government officials who move from district to district to conduct business. Last December, Health Director Loretta Fuddy died when the plane she took from the Molokai airport crashed into the ocean.

  • ‘Bruno Mars Act’ Proposed As A Resolution For Ticket Scalping

Bruno Mars has been a big topic of discussion lately, given the recent ticket scalping debacle that evolved in Hawaii. The Unorthodox Jukebox singer may actually be a pillar for a new anti-scalping resolution.

The awkward situation began when Mars’ scheduled concerts in Honolulu, HI sold out in less than three hours. While most would consider this a laudable feat, it was actually quite problematic where Mars is concerned.

According to KHON2, only an estimated six percent of the tickets sold were actually purchased by individual fans. The vast majority of the tickets ended up being nabbed by opportunistic, online ticket brokers and scalpers to be sold at inflated rates.

As a result of the massive imbalance, a substantial number of fans came up short, walking away empty-handed. Hawaii state legislators have taken the initiative to come up with a solution to rectify the situation. With a new law they’ve coined the Bruno Mars act, legislators are hoping to put an end to the price gouging practice.

Hawaii State Senate President Donna Mercado Kim weighed in with her sentiments on the unethical practice. “Anyone who takes the time to show up in person should have the opportunity to purchase tickets for at least the first two days before opening up to online sales,” Kim said in her statement. “It’s unfortunate that out-of-state ticket brokers and scalpers will resell these concert tickets back to local residents for an enormous profit.”

If the legislation passes the act in Hawaii, fans will have the opportunity to make ticket purchases approximately 48 hours before online sales begin. The bill will also serve as a preventive measure to prohibit the use of security software designed to bypass online barriers put in place to stop bulk ticket purchases.

However, Kim stated that the ultimate goal will be to stop the practice of ticket scalping in its entirety. “If you’re a loyal fan standing in line to purchase a coveted concert ticket and  plan to attend that concert, you should be able to have more that six percent of  a chance to purchase ticket,” she explained.

While the proposed legislative resolution isn’t considered a solidified law, Kim is hoping that the Bruno Mars Act will at least curb the staggering number of tickets nabbed by scalpers and ticket brokers.

  • Missing Pregnant Woman: Carly Scott of Hawaii

Hawaii News Now tells us of a scorched 1997 Toyota 4Runner found in rural Hawaii on Wednesday, while the search continues for the pregnant owner of the vehicle.

Carly “Charli” Scott has been reported missing since Monday. While her dog passenger has been found in a nearby community, it seems as if the woman has disappeared without a trace.

The believed father of the child, ex-boyfriend Steven Capobianco, is apparently the last person who has seen Carly Scott– he understands why he is probably the prime suspect.

Scott picked up Capobianco on Sunday night and drove him to an adjacent city in the rural Upcountry Maui so that he could fix his truck. Scott followed him back from Keanae later, both on their way back to Haiku, but Capobianco reportedly lost sight of Scott’s vehicle.

Capobianco told a Hawaii news station that he sent her a “thank you” text with no response, but received a visit from the police in the following pre-dawn hours.

Capobianco was administered a lie-detector test, which he failed, and was thoroughly questioned by the police– but no arrests have been made nor any suspects named. The search party has reported “possible evidence,” but authorities are requesting that the information be kept vague until further investigation. Police are requesting any searchers to refrain from touching or moving any clues they may discover.

A party of over 30 people -a blend of family members, authorities and volunteers- are a part of the search team, as well as growing help via the internet:

Besides Carly Scott’s ex-boyfriend seeing her that night, the 5’10, 160 lb., red-haired pregnant woman with green eyes was last seen at her sister’s home in Haiku, a city in northeast Maui.

Anyone with information that could assist with Carly “Charli” Scott’s search should contact Detective Wendell Loo at (808) 270-6516 during business hours or (808) 268-2763 after hours.

  • Hiker Trapped On Mauna Loa Rescued

It was like a nightmare scenario turned Hollywood movie, but it was all too real….and it happened to Alex Sverdlov.

The 36-year-old Queens, NY was at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park this past week with the intent of trekking to the top of the Mauna Loa volcano. Sverdlov made the 18 mile trip up to the peak and reached the summit on Tuesday.

And then everything went terribly wrong.

During his descent, the New York native found himself blindsided by an unexpected snowstorm. Sverdlov found himself battered by freezing winds and blinding snow. To make matters worse, much of his gear had been left behind during his trip up the volcano.

Sverdlov didn’t anticipate needing the heavier gear and thanks to the horrible, “white-out” conditions, he was unable locate his pack. He had no choice but to survive the frigid conditions overnight with scant supplies: The thin wet clothing he wore and a frozen water bottle. Sverdlov found the rest of his gear the next day, but the snow had made it impossible for him to get down. He would have to suffer through another night on Mauna Loa in freezing conditions.

Luckily for Sverdlov, park rangers were aware of his hike.

“What saved Alex is that he had a backcountry permit,” said park ranger John Broward. “We knew he was up there.”

When he failed to come back down for his car, which was still sitting untouched on Wednesday, the park rangers had guessed that Sverdlov had been caught in the terrible storm.

Sverdlov was rescued by helicopter on Thursday morning. He was reported to have said of his nerve-wracking experience that he’d, “done many crazy hikes, but this one pretty much tops the bill.”

The ordeal hasn’t squashed his love of hiking and he immediately applied for another permit. However, Sverdlov insists that this time he will be sticking to the “sunny part of the park.”

No one can fault him for that decision.

  • Grace Potter Sings National Anthem

The equally talented and beautiful leading lady of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals performed the National Anthem for Sunday’s Pro Bowl game.

Prior to the game the singer jumped on Twitter as a last-minute gesture to announce the exciting news.

The cameras panned in, slowly falling on Potter standing alone with her Flying V guitar strapped to her chest. The announcers cued her and without missing a beat the singer climbed her way into the song. While it seemed her vocals were a tad strained from prior singing, she cruised along each historical lyric with generous warmth and rasp.

The Vermont native was clearly feeling the warmer vibes of Hawaii, sporting a very tropical, kimono-styled dress paired with a chunky gold necklace.

Her performance wasn’t overstated but rather perfectly delivered in a humble, confident way.

This was the first time the multi-talented musician had performed the national anthem.

Paulina Gretzky Wows in Tiny Bikini [PHOTO]

For those who might have been thinking about taking up golf, here’s a little incentive for you: Paulina Gretzky. For the past few weeks the 25-year old model and singer has been making her away around the Hawaiian islands with her pro-golf husband Dustin Johnson. But what’s been just a vacation for them, has turned into a bikini fashion show for the rest of us, as Gretzky has been the star of many paparazzi photos that have gone completely viral in the past few weeks.

One photo shows her sitting on top of a rock and staring out into the ocean blue, and while doing that, she’s sporting an in a itty-bitty yellow bikini that probably couldn’t be any smaller. Obviously, the photo received thousands of “likes” in just a couple of weeks and tons of comments from adoring fans.

“Wow. Stunning,” one fan wrote. “Little slice of heaven,” wrote another one, as most people chose to be tasteful in their comments and not vulgar, which shows the photos are sexy but tasteful.

Another photo shows Gretzky sprawled out on that same rock, giving fans a full view of her swimsuit, designer sunglasses and pretty facial features. Now whether she was simply catching some rays, or whether she was in the middle of a makeshift photo shoot is unknown, but either way, the stunning photo received tons of attention and comments on her Instagram page.

The third photo, slash video, doesn’t show any skin, but it’s gone extremely viral nonetheless. In it, Gretzky takes a pretty decent golf swing and looks like someone who’s been playing the sport for several years, so there’s no doubt that Johnson has been giving his girlfriend some decent tips, which Gretzky alludes to. “Gettin a little better thanks to my coach,” she wrote when posting the image.
