  • Harry Potter to Become a Play, Says Author J.K. Rowling

Fans all over the world have seen the eight film installments of the the world-renowned Harry Potter film series inspired by author J.K. Rowling. Now, Rowling plans to take the film to the stage in a new play. According to Associated Press, Rowling announced Friday that she is currently working on a stage adaptation of the boy wizard’s life.

However, the play will actually chronicle his life before he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. So, the play will give viewers a different perspective to enjoy as opposed to viewing a reenactment of one of the films. Harry Potter fans will definitely have something new and vibrant to anticipate from the ever-popular series.

The seven-book Harry Potter series begins with Harry, an orphan raised in lackluster conditions by a resentful aunt and uncle, receiving a letter informing him of his wizardry. The new stage play will unveil the prequel to Harry’s life before this period in his life. Rowling explained on her website that the play will capture, “what was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs.”

The play is expected to “explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast,”she explained. Rowling, who serves as a co-producer for the stage project, will work alongside prominent theatrical producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender. While Rowling is known for her creative authorship for the award-winning work, she will only serve as a collaborative entity where the script-writing is concerned.

“Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin’s vision was the only one that really made sense to me and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage.”

No further details have been released for the upcoming Harry Potter play. The director for the project has yet to be chosen, and there are no opening dates as of yet. The work is still in the preliminary stages, so more details will be released with time.

Rowling’s Harry Potter novel series has sold more than a staggering 450 million copies worldwide.

Harry Potter fans rejoiced a few weeks ago when news that Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling would be working on a new film based on the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. David Heyman produced all eight of the original Harry Potter films and gave fans some insight into what the film will offer.

Heyman will be producing the new film as well and said that although Rowling had not turned in the final manuscript for the film, that he knows she is very excited about it. “She’s not doing it for any other reason other than she loves the world and she had a story that she wanted to tell,” he said.

He also wanted to make sure that Harry Potter fans understand that they will not be seeing the familiar character Harry, Hermione and Ron and that the new film is based on a world like the one in Harry Potter, but offers a completely different storyline.

“It’s incredibly exciting,” he continued. “This is not Harry Potter. This is not Harry, Ron, and Hermione. This is a separate story within a universe related to the Potter universe.”

The main character is the new film is Newt Scamander. Heyman said that many fans want to know what kind of creature Newt will encounter during the film. “You better believe I brought up quintapeds and lethifolds,”Heyman demured. “We follow Newt on his adventures,” he said, grinning.

Rowling wrote “Fantastic Beasts” and “Quidditch Through the Ages” for charity back in 2001. “Tales of Beetle the Bard” is a book of children’s stories referenced in “Harry Potter,” also published for charity in 2008.
