  • Google+ Hangouts Move Underwater

The Catlin Seaview Survey, with the help of award-winning cinematographer and shark researcher Richard Fitzpatrick, are taking Google+ Hangouts under the sea.

The Catlin Seaview Survey is a research project whose mission is the “carry out the first comprehensive study to document the composition and health of coral reefs on the Great Barrier reef and Coral sea.” They are going deep, very deep to explore how ocean changes are affecting these natural wonders.

Here’s what they had to say in a Google+ post:

A few weeks ago, we wanted to see if we could use Google+ to announce the project to a conference in Singapore directly from the ocean floor. It turns out, we could!

Check out the video from that test below:

They go on to say that now, they’re opening the Hangout to the masses:

But why limit that experience to a conference room? Why not invite everyone? We got a lot of questions about how our cameras work and how we’re planning to photograph the reef, so that will be the focus of our first Hangout on Air. Joining us will be Emmy award-winning documentarian +Richard Fitzpatrick from under the sea (with his trusty full-face mask and microphone) and photographers from Sydney & around the world.

The Catlin Seaview Survey has yet to announce a date and time for the Hangout, so we’ll have to stay tuned to their Google+ page for updates.

  • Google Webmaster Hangouts: 2 You Can Join In The Near Future

Google often does Webmaster Central Hangouts on Google+. This gives webmasters an opportunity to connect with Googlers and learn valuable tips about how they can get more out of their sites, and out of Google.

Google’s Pierre Far announced a couple of upcoming hangouts for Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28. Both begin at 2PM UK time, and last for an hour. Far writes:

US-based webmasters: please be careful with the time difference for these as Europe would have switched to summer time by then!

Where: Right here on Google+. It works best with a webcam + headset. You can find out more about Hangouts and how to participate at http://goo.gl/k6aMv

Topic: Anything webmaster-related: Webmaster Tools, Sitemaps, crawling, indexing, duplicate content, websites, web search, etc.

To join, you obviously need a Google+ account. The thing is, they’re only limited to 10 participants, but people tend to come and go, so even if you can’t immediately get in, you might be able to squeeze in sometime within the hour. It’s a chance to get some direct advice about your site from Google, so depending on how pressing your issue is, it may be worth waiting to get in.

  • Google Docs Now A Core Part Of Hangouts

Google Docs Now A Core Part Of Hangouts

Google Docs have just gotten a promotion in the realm of Google+. Today, the Google+ team announced that Google Docs are now part of the core Hangout experience, and can be accessed with the click of a single button from the main hangout screen.

    From Google+:

Last year we launched Hangouts with extras as a way to preview certain hangout features. Google Docs integration was one such extra, and the Google+ community has used it for all sorts of awesome — from trip planning and lecture notes to doodling and charades. Today I’m happy to announce that we’re graduating Google Docs to the core Hangouts experience for all users.

What they are referring to is the fact that Google Docs have been accessible inside Hangouts for a few months now on a limited basis. Google+ Hangouts with Extras were the 94-97th “improvements” that Google announced when Google+ was still in its infancy. The “extras” included screensharing (which has already graduated), sketchpad, and Google Docs, all of which were available as preview features.

But now they are rolling the Google Docs functionality out to everyone. When you click the “docs” button (it will be at the top left, next to the other buttons), you can add an existing documents or upload a whole new one. Everyone in the hangout will be able to collaboratively edit multiple documents as one time.

Google+ Hangouts have already begun to catch on for businesses – either within the office or outside it. Adding collaborative doc-editing functionality to the core experience can only make Hangouts much more useful for this purpose.

  • Google+ Hangouts Made More Accessible For The Blind

Mohamed Mansour, who’s actually a software engineer for RIM, has created a Chrome extension to make Google+ hangouts more accessible to blind people.

It uses text to speech technology, reading content from the chat box to the user.

“Today I was in a hangout, where I met a blind war veteran,” says Mansour no Google+. “It was really inspiring to see him use such technology. But it was really hard for him to use it since it wasn’t accessible friendly. I was writing on the chat on the left, and it was really difficult for him to read the text. I am really into Accessibility, and I worked on it a lot in Chromium in the past, and I really wanted to help him.”

“So I told Tim, ‘what if the chat spoke to you?’ Tim said, ‘that would be awesome’. When I saw the big smile on his face, I had to do it! So I created this extension for Chrome!” he adds.

In the description in the Chrome Extension gallery, it says the first version focuses on the blind, but Mansour hopes to add more features to make it even better and more accessible, and is looking for feedback to that effect.

Mansour notes in his Google+ post that he hopes Google will adopt this for Hangouts itself.

  • WebGL Hangout For Chrome Developers

    WebGL Hangout For Chrome Developers

This appears to be becoming a regular thing – Google uploading developer hangouts (from Google+) to YouTube for all to watch and learn from. We recently looked at one about Chrome Developer Tools and one on developing for Chrome For Android.

Today’s is all about WebGL. It’s about an hour long, and it’s full of Googlers who have plenty to say on the subject, including some discussion about some map-related things the company has been discussing at Strata and a SXSW.

Google has a workshop area of its WebGL experiments site here, which you may also find of use.

  • Chrome Developer? Here’s A Google+ Hangout For You

Google has been utilizing Google+ better than anyone. Go figure. Google’s use of its own social network, regardless of how much people are using it day to day, is proving to be beneficial to webmasters, web developers, marketers, etc. simply because Googlers constantly use it as a communication medium and a place for people to learn some good tips for getting more out of Google products.

Last week, for example, there was a developer hangout for the recently launched Chrome for Android.

Now, Google has posted a new Chrome Developer Hangout to YouTube. This one runs through Chrome Developer tools with Googlers Paul Irish, Pavel Feldman, Sam Dutton, Peter Beverloo, Alex Sexton and Paul Lewis.

  • Google+ Hangouts Get Mask Feature

Google now lets you wear virtual masks in Google+ Hangouts. Finally, the killer feature. This could be the one that ushers in the downfall of Facebook.

I’m kidding of course, but the feature does exist.

Google product manager Amit Fulay posted on Google+:

Hanging out with friends and family using Google+ Hangouts is always fun.

In the past, we’ve introduced effects like mustache, reindeer and antlers. Today, we’re experimenting with a few more. Just click on the new mask image icon to cycle through these new effects. (see screenshot)

We hope you have as much fun as our designer +Beck Park and engineer +Jeremy Ng had in creating these.
    #googleplusupdate

Note: the effects are being rolled out, so if you dont see it at first, give it a try in a few minutes.

Google+ also offers mask effects in its creative kit for photos. So, for example, you can put a Jason Voorhees mask on your dog:

    Dog in mask on <a href=Google+” src=”http://cdn.ientry.com/sites/webpronews/article_pics/dog-mask.jpg ” title=”Dog in mask on Google+” class=”aligncenter” width=”616″ height=”329″ />

I hope Google is working on a Chrome plug-in for creative kit, which utilizes Picnik, which itself is being shut down by the company. I think that would make more people happy than silly masks in hangouts.

  • NY Giants To Host Google+ Hangout

NY Giants To Host Google+ Hangout

Are you a New York Giants fan? Do you have a question that you’d like to ask Victor Cruz or Corey Webster? Are you a devious Patriot fans who wants a chance to taunt your opponents? Then head on over to Google+ and tell the NY Giants why they should choose you for their special Hangout.

On Thursday, February 2nd at 6:30 EST, four members of the NFC Champion NY Giants will host their first-ever Google+ Hangout. The participating players will be Victor Cruz, Mark Herzlich, Henry Hynoski, and Corey Webster.

Fans who wish to participate in the Hangout are being asked to leave a comment on the Google+ post announcing the Hangout. “Tell us why you deserve to hangout with Big Blue on Thursday night,” they say. According to a post on the NYG official site, they will be selecting 20 fans based on these responses to chat live with the players.

Here’s the kind of thing you’ll be up against, so act fast!

I absolutely LOVE the Giants, I’m obsessed. My dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather are all Giants fans, so, naturally, I am too and I have been since I was about 7. Living in the Philadelphia area, I get picked on all the time about being a big blue fan, but I show my NY pride loud and proud. It would make my entire year if i had the chance to talk to talk with Victor Cruz, Corey Webster, Mark Herzlich, and Henry Hynoski! I’m #ALLIN ; my cat and dog both have jerseys, there is a huge flag hanging on our house, stickers all over our cars, and I wear my NY gear as often as I can. PLEASE pick me!!! And, most importantly, GO G-MEN!

The Google+ Hangout is actually part of a larger initiative – Giants “social media night.” There will be a webcast available via Giants.com featuring players Jake Ballard, Steve Weatherford, Tyler Sash, and Prince Amukamara. They will answer questions that fans submit via Twitter, Facebook and Google+ using the hashtags #askBallard, #askSteve #askSash, and #askPrince.

The Giants will let the lucky fans know on Thursday morning if they are going to get to Hangout live with Cruz and the gang.

  • Google+ Hangout With President Obama Happening Today

Dad pants be damned because President Obama’s working to get his groove back with voters today as he will be participating in a live Google+ Hangout on YouTube this afternoon. The President will be answering questions (over 133,000 were submitted but don’t expect Obama to answer all of them – get real, he’s got a world to run) submitted by YouTubers over the past week since the State of the Union. While people have been able to submit and vote for questions that have been posed, a select few whose questions were accepted will be invited to participate in the live Hangout with the President.

The Hangout will be streaming live today at 2:30PM on the White House YouTube Channel and while it’s too late at this point to submit a question, you can head on over to the page now and get a preview of some of the questions that have received votes thus far. Interestingly, of the ten questions that appear on the top of the page, eight of them are focused on the (de)criminalization of marijuana. I wish I could say it’d be exciting to see the President answer any of those questions candidly – YouTube notes that Obama and the White House will not have access to the questions asked prior to the interview – but even a question about something as divisive as marijuana legalization will still stubbornly illicit a canned response. Obama and his team have been at this whole politics things for a while and you don’t go charging into a less moderated medium like YouTube without having all of your ducks in a row beforehand. Additionally, I expect several of the topics will be drawn from the SOTU last week, such as college tuition and the snail-paced job growth. Who knows, though, with the President’s penchant for being able to seamlessly combine stately professionalism with refreshingly human animation, he’ll likely have more than a couple of entertaining responses.

Anyways. If you’ve got an hour to kill and want to cram before the POTUS has his Hangout+ session, re-watch parts (or all) of last week’s State of the Union address. If you do watch it, I recommend not partaking in the drinking game that many like to enjoy while watching the SOTU – it’s still a bit early in the day for that.

  • Matt Cutts Offers ‘Above the Fold’ Clarification

When Google announced their algorithm change to penalize sites using too many ads, ones that appear above the fold, the first, if not only response was, “how much is too much?”

The first, best answer is, thanks to some clarification offered by Google’s Matt Cutts — during a Google hangout/video chat session — it’s not a numbers game. Google hasn’t written their algorithm to punish sites with, say, 20 ads above the fold, as opposed to the site owner who only has 19 showing. No, from the Cutts/Google perspective, the algorithm alteration inspects pages to see how the space, especially above the fold, is being used.

In fact, Google isn’t concerned about the number of ads at all. Instead, they just don’t want these ads — however many are appearing above the fold — taking up too much space. Because of the information was given during a Google+ Hangout session, as of this time, there isn’t any video of it to post, although Cutts indicates if the video passes the quality control inspection, he may make it available to the public.

However, there are some important details discussing how Google determines if your site is making good use of its space, or not. The information was previously posted at the WebProNews Google+ page. To demonstrate his point, Cutts turned to visual aids:

…Cutts actually took two yellow stickies and put them on the top of a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and indicated that even if this space was just one big ad it is too much and could be impacted by Google’s new algorithm change.

As you can see, it’s size, not quantity Google’s watching for. Does this mean you can stick hundreds of ads above the fold, as long as they don’t infringe on the content’s real estate? It’s not something any SEO team worth their salt would recommend, however, with Google’s alteration, how you use your site’s space is just as important as the amount of ads used to fill these spaces.

In previous articles discussing Google’s algorithm changes, sometimes, reaction comes to us in the form of “Google is trying to play God,” or at least, determining how people’s site should look. Some site owners are disillusioned about Google’s apparent attempt to control the look and feel of the web, at least in relation to ad placement. With that in mind, it’s important to remember these rules only apply if you are concerned about being in Google’s search index.

If that’s not a concern of yours, put as many ads in as many spaces as you want. If, however, you do want your site to be apart of Google’s potential search results, it would be prudent to follow Google’s suggestions. Besides, it’s important to consider potential site visitors as well. It’s not a pleasant visit if visitors have to sift through poorly placed ads just to find the content that triggered the search engine result.

  • Google Office Hours Webmaster Hangout On Wednesday

Google’s John Mueller (of Google Switzerland) announced in a Google+ post that Google will be hosting an “Office Hours’ hangout on Google+ for webmasters on Wednesday.

They do this 1-3 times a week, but there’s a lot of learning opportunity. Mueller says:

    When: Wednesday, 25 January 2012 at 10am CET/9am GMT / http://goo.gl/I0E25http://goo.gl/u5Dr9

Where: A hangout here on Google+. It works best with a webcam + headset. You can find out more about Hangouts and how to participate at http://goo.gl/ZH9xZ

Topic? Anything webmaster related like crawling, indexing, duplicate content, Sitemaps, Webmaster Tools, pagination, duplicate content, multi-lingual/multi-regional sites, etc.

Google asks that participants bring questions or post them here on this Google+ update in the comments.

I’m guessing the page layout algorithm change will be a a topic that comes up.

  • Obama To Host Post-State of the Union Google+ Hangout

Just a few days after joining Google+, President Obama isn’t wasting any time before interacting with the new social base. Monday morning, The White House announced that the President will be holding a special post-State of the Union Hangout, where he will answer user-submitted questions.

The State of the Union address is set for Tuesday, January 24th and the special Google+ Hangout will take place on January 30th.

In the first completely-virtual interview from the White House, President Obama will answer questions that have been submitted by Americans from across the country via YouTube. The virtual event with the President will happen through Google+ Hangouts, a live multi-person video chat.

On Monday, January 30, the President will join a special Google+ Hangout from the West Wing. He’ll be answering several of the most popular questions that have been submitted through YouTube, and some of the people who submitted questions will even be invited to join the President in the Hangout and take part in the live conversation

When the White House first joined Google+, they announced that staff members and experts would be answering user questions directly following the State of the Union, but the fact that this is all culminating with a Hangout with Obama himself is big news.

You can submit your questions to the White House YouTube channel until January 28th.

I guess the White House saw the latest figures that said Google+ has skyrocketed to 90+ million users. They also announced that Obama’s Weekly video address will be broadcast through Google+.

  • Watch AFC / NFC Championship Games With Detroit Lion Chris Harris on Google+

Detroit Lions safety Chris Harris is utilizing the Google+ On Air Hangout feature to host a game-viewing party with fans. Harris wrote on Google+ yesterday:

The NFL Championship games are tomorrow, baybeeeee, and I’d like all of us to get together and watch them in a Google+ On Air Hangout.

We’ll be talking about the +New England Patriots v the +Baltimore Ravens game, as well as the +New York Giants v the +San Francisco 49ers game. And if you want to make sure you’re among the first 10 people to get in on the video hangout, do me a favor and let me know in the comments below. I’ll make sure you know the exact moment the Hangout goes live, so you can get in early.

The AFC Championship Game is in the second quarter as I write this, and the Hangout is indeed underway. You can find it here. People are in and out, and you can probably find a spot if you want. Either way, you can still watch it.

I’m sure some Chicago Bears fan who are missing Harris’ services will want to join in.

  • The White House Joins Google+, Wants To Hangout With You

You now have one more way to follow the Obama administration’s day-to-day activities as The White House has officially joined Google+.

According to their first post, you can expect to find news, behind the scenes photos, videos, and discussion topics when you visit the new page:

Welcome to the White House on Google+! Here you’ll find news from the blog, behind-the-scenes photos and videos, plus chances to engage with administration officials. One feature we’re really excited about are Hangouts. On our Google+ page, we’ll host regular White House Hangouts with administration officials on topics ranging from the economy to technology. Some Google+ users will be invited to join the Hangout with the White House and have a conversation with policy experts. But the best part is that even if you’re not “in” the Hangout, you can watch the whole thing live on WhiteHouse.gov, on our Google+ page or on the White House YouTube channel.

So you probably won’t be hanging out with the President himself, but it looks like the administration wants to engage a new audience in policy discussions.

The White House has only posted twice today, but have already been added to over 7,000 circles. Their only other post is a video of Senior Advisor David Plouffe. Here, he discusses how you can interact with The White House on Google+ (and other social networks) following the upcoming State of the Union address:

The White House has already asked users what kind of discussion topics they would find most interesting. The latest comment asks “does the White House use plug in air fresheners of potpourri baskets,” so, yeah.

Already a presence on both Twitter and Facebook, the Obama administration has spent the last year trying to expand their social media reach through other channels. In August 2011, Obama joined Foursquare and in October he joined Tumblr. And earlier this month, the Obama campaign opened up an Instagram account, hoping to provide voters an inside look at the trail through photos.

  • Google Election & Politics Helps Informed Voters Stay Informed

The U.S. presidential election cycle used to be like a regulated yet exhilarating amusement park ride that you could count on starting and stopping at certain times. Think of the Scrambler: dizzying in experience yet timed to end at a reliable time. Now, with the ubiquity of the 24-hour news cycle and the hordes of blogs and other commentators, the teeth have been stripped off the gears that regulate the speed of the news cycle to the point that not only can you never get off this ride but it just keeps going faster and faster. Barf bags not included.

Due to the breakneck recycle speed of the political news cycle, trying to stay informed on what’s happening in the world of politics can be nauseating. You’re probably always going to be me missing something somewhere. However aggregating your own collection of news sources doesn’t have to be so stupefying since Google has made it a little easier for voters and otherwise interested parties to attempt to stay abreast of the latest news concerning topics, candidates, and election results. Google Politics & Elections, a new wing of the Google News service, collects articles covering breaking stories related to politics in the United States. With the service, readers can isolate topics to certain candidates (right now it’s a bunch of Republican primary candidates and the current POTUS, Barack Obama) as well as issues related to categories like the economy, social issues, and healthcare. From the post on Google’s official blog:

The site enables voters, journalists and campaigns to quickly sort through election info by popularity, race or issues. People can also check out the Trends Dashboard to take the web’s real-time political pulse by comparing candidates’ YouTube video views, search traffic and Google News mentions. Campaign staffers, advocates and everyday citizens can utilize our tools and features to reach, engage and inspire voters.

What might be most interesting for anyone who makes a hobby out of political speculation there is a function on the Politics & Elections homepage where you can track trends related to each specific candidate. For instance, given the latest surge of Rick Santorum out of the bowels of obscurity and into a legitimate third place (the fact that third place is now a consummation devoutly to be wished is kind of absurd, really), readers can actually see the rise in Google News Mentions of Santorum in the past week. It’s a fun tool as an observer, but given how tumultuous this primary cycle has been for all Republican candidates I wouldn’t recommend placing any bets on the reliability of any search trends as proof of sustainable electability.

The Google Politics & Elections also employs the Hangouts tools for journalists who are personally covering the election, perhaps as an effort to promote sodality and collaboration but I anticipate it will most likely be used as an online watering hole where everybody commiserates and decompresses. You can add the Politics & Elections tool to your Google+ account, as well, if you’re interested in participating or watching any of the activity in the Hangouts. Additionally, you can follow news stories as they develop by adding this group to your Circles. The news service will also cover international politics as well as the home-grown brews but given that we are officially in the election year, expect most of the news to be dominated by the election of the next POTUS.

Since today kicks off the election of the Republican primaries with the Iowa caucus, following these services might be a good idea if any of you are hoping to stay informed as the results start to come in about which candidate will claim victory in Iowa this evening.

  • New Year’s Eve Google+ Style

    New Year’s Eve Google+ Style

Singer songwriter Daria Musk is hosting a worldwide Google+ On Air Hangout to ring in the New Year. In a Google+ update, she pitched her idea as follows:

    1. I host a Hangouts-On-Air broadcast ’round the clock on New Years Eve.
    2. You join from around the world at midnight in your time zone!!
    3. Add yourself to this Google Doc: http://bit.ly/tjK5sH

She is using the Google Doc to organize who will join at what times, and to create circles for each time zone.

“We can’t show the celebrations on TV, who needs TV when you’ve got friends around the world to celebrate with!?” she writes. “So it will be extra cool if you live somewhere where you can show us some fireworks or festivities in your city!! In the Google Doc you can fill in your ideas for what you can show us!”

Apparently response to the idea has been pretty strong so far, as she indicated in a follow-up post.

It’s an interesting way to use Google Hangouts. I’ll give her that.

I wonder how many participants will be dressed like George Clooney.

  • Google+ For Android Gets Update With Hangouts Within Messenger

Google has launched a new version of its Google+ app for Android, now available in the Android Market. The most notable feature is the addition of hangouts within Google+ Messenger.

“Even with all the great technology I have to connect with my family, we still miss connecting and being together face-to-face,” said Punit Soni, lead product manager on Google+ games and mobile, in a Google+ update. “With the magic of hangouts on Messenger, now a simple tap of a button can move us from our Messenger conversation to face-to-face group video chat.”

Obviously, you’ll need a device with a front-facing camera to take advantage of the feature, and you’ll also need to be running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher.

    Android Google Plus

    Android Google Plus

There is also a new design for the photo albums view, people suggestions when composing a messenger conversation, new icons to show which photos have been uploaded to Google+ via the instant upload feature, and the ability to leave one-to-one messenger conversations.

Hangouts within Messenger will be coming soon to iOS, Google says.

  • Google Uses Galaxy Nexus To Promote Google+ Hangouts

It’s Galaxy Nexus day, and people have been lining up to purchase the new device. I came across a promotional video in Google’s YouTube uploads promoting Google Hangouts on the device, using a classic Queen song:

Speaking of Hangouts, Google launched some new features for Hangouts this week making them more accessible in the process.

Google has sure been on a Queen kick lately. A few months ago, they had an entertaining Freddie Mercury doodle for their logo in honor of the late singer. Here’s their video from that:

Here is some more of today’s coverage on the Galaxy Nexus:

  • Google + Hangouts Get More Accessible and Feature-Rich

Google announced the launch of several new features for Google+ Hangouts.

For one, you can launch a Hangout from any post on Google+. There is now a “Hangout” button underneath any post, and if others are already hanging out, you can see their invitation in the comments of the post.

    Google Hangouts

    hangouts

Google is also bringing Hangouts to Google+ Messenger on mobile devices. There is a new hangout icon inside. This will come out in the new Google+ app coming to the Android Market in the next few days. Google says it’s also coming soon to the app store.

    Hangouts

Hangouts On Air was introduced in September to let a select few broadcast their hangouts to bigger audiences and record them. They debuted the feature with will.i.am. Google now says the feature is getting closer to general availability, but it’s not there quite yet.

However, they’re turning the feature on for hundreds more public figures, celebrities and other Google+ users with large followings. They’re making the feature completely self-service, and adding YouTube integration, so that when you’re off the air, a full-length, private recording of the video will be uploaded to your account.

Earlier this month, Google announced a new Hangouts with Extras feature that lets you make phone calls from inside Hangouts. Today, Google announced that it is making it possible to dial-in anyone from almost any country directly into a hangout, and calls to the U.S. and Canada are free.

    dial in to hangouts

Google is also making active Hangouts more accessible by adding them to the right-hand side of the stream, where you’ll now see up to three live hangouts that you can join, and sending you notifications when you’re invited to a hangout.

Finally, they’ve added a feature to let you put virtual antlers on yourself during hangouts for the holidays.

    hangouts with antlers

That silly Google. What will they do next?

  • Make Calls Inside of Google+ Hangouts

Google announced a new Google Hangouts with Extras feature that lets you make phone calls from inside Hangouts.

In the announcement on Google+, Google’s Jarkko Oikarinen said, “We are constantly listening to feedback so that we can make Hangouts even better for Google+ users, and we’re excited by the really cool ways people are using the product. Today we’re making it possible to make phone calls from inside a hangout, so you can dial people into the room from wherever they’re at. (Helpful for party lines and conference calls alike.)”

For now, the feature only supports calls in the U.S. and Canada, and they’re free. The feature can be found in Google+ Hangouts with Extras.

Google announced Hangouts with Extras back in September as part of a handful of Google+ feature announcements, which also included search. Other extras include: SketchPad and Google Docs support and Hangout naming.

To add a phone participant to a hangout, click “invite” at the top of the Hangouts with Extras window, click the “phone” tab on the left of the window, and enter the phone number of the person you want to call. Then click “call now”.
