  • Benedict Cumberbatch: Stop Filming Me Onstage!

Benedict Cumberbatch is currently in a run of Hamlet at the Barbican Theatre in London that is so popular it set records for selling out its entire run in minutes.

The show launched last week with a preview performance that was plagued with technical difficulties. Benedict Cumberbatch was put in the unenviable position of having to re-start the opening scene of the play three times to get the flow of the technical performance right.

Folks familiar with Hamlet may protest, “Wait. Hamlet is not actually in the opening scene of the play.”

That is correct. But for this production, the director determined to take the most famous scene of the play, the “To Be or Not To Be” speech, and put it at the beginning of the play. This puts Benedict Cumberbatch on stage from the opening moments, with the star draw reciting what may be Shakespeare’s most famous lines ever, in a show that sold out faster than any other in history.

It sounds like a good idea, if everything goes correctly. But everything did not go correctly for that preview performance. To make matters worse, Benedict Cumberbatch says he had to look out into his audience, only to see a blinking red light staring back at him from the third row.

Someone was recording the show on video.

After the show, Benedict Cumberbatch made his way to the alley outside the Barbican Theatre to speak with some fans who had gathered. What he said was caught on amateur video and posted on YouTube. What he said has been enthusiastically lauded by theatre performers.

“Can I ask you all a huge favor?” Cumberbatch asked his fans. “Can I first of all say a huge thank you for those of you that are here tonight? Its been a hell of a week. It’s been one damned thing after another.”

Benedict Cumberbatch then laid out his gripe.

“I can see cameras. I can see red lights in the auditorium, and it may not be any of you here that did that, but it’s blindingly obvious. I could see a red light in about the third row on the right and it’s mortifying. There’s nothing that’s less enjoyable or supportive as an actor on stage experiencing that.”

Cumberbatch then asked his fans to spread the word for him about his.

“Tweet, blog and hashtag the shit out of this,” he asked them. “I can’t give you what I want to give you, which is a live performance that you’ll remember, hopefully, in your minds and brains whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, rather than on your phones.”

Commenting specifically about the need for re-starting the opening scene, Cumberbatch said, “It’s not the easiest place to begin a play full stop, but for the second time even harder.”

  • Benedict Cumberbatch Sets Theater Sales Record

I’ll admit it. I’m a Cumberbitch. Everything Benedict Cumberbatch touches these days seems to turn to pure gold; the man can seemingly do no wrong. Like every other Cumberbitch, I was terribly excited when I heard that the Christmas special of Sherlock will be a full, feature-length episode, even though said episode is not going to air until Christmas 2015. It is this, exact, anticipatory behavior which recently led to England experiencing its most furious theater ticket sales of all time.

The Benedict Cumberbatch edition of Hamlet is set to hit the Barbican theater in England from August 5 to October 31 of next year. Despite the fact that the show doesn’t air for another year, the initial queue for tickets on Monday morning was simply astounding. As people logged in at the time the tickets became available – 10 am – they were promptly greeted with bad news. Most people learned just how many Cumberbitches there are in the world, as the queue was consistently reporting that there were 30,000+ people awaiting tickets as well.

By 5:25 pm, all 100,000 available tickets had sold out, making Cumberbatch’s Hamlet the most sought theater tickets in British history, outpacing the current best A Streetcar Named Desire, starring former X-Files actress Gillian Anderson, by four-to-one in ticket sales and besting Jay-Z and Beyonce’s On the Run tour by 214 percent.

For fans, the wait will most likely be worthwhile. Hamlet will not be Cumberbatch’s first foray into the British theater scene. Cumberbatch has won multiple awards for his roles in theater, including his roles in Hedda Gabler (Olivier Award nomination), After the Dance, and Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein (Olivier award winner), in which Cumberbatch portrayed both Dr. Frankenstein and his creation on opposite nights.

If you can’t wait over a year for your next Cumberbatch fix, you’ll next be able to catch him starring in the Alan Turing biopic, The Imitation Game, which is set to hit theaters on November 21.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch to Star in ‘Hamlet’ and Coloring Book

You’ve seen him in Sherlock, you’ve seen him in 12 Years a Slave, and now you’ll see him in Hamlet. Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor with perhaps the best name ever, will play the role of Hamlet for 12 weeks this summer.

Cumberbatch will star in the Shakespearian drama at the Barbican theatre in London. This will mark the actor’s first return to the stage since his role in the 2011 production of Frankenstein, in which he alternated the role of Frankenstein and his creature with Jonny Lee Miller.

Sonia Friedman, who will produce the production, called Cumberbatch “one of the most gifted actors of his generation.” Lyndsey Turner, who has had recent success with the plays Chimerica and Posh, will direct the play.

And if seeing the dashing actor on the screen and stage still isn’t enough for you, you can get your fill with the help of the new coloring book, Colour Me Good Benedict Cumberbatch.

You read that right; you can purchase a book filled with 16 black outline drawings of the star, and let your imagination run wild.

Created by British artist Mel Simone Elliott, the book invites fans to imagine themselves as the star’s boyfriend or girlfriend and draw pictures that depict their life together. The book will feature contemporary facts and jokes, and even a picture of Cumberbatch where you can “photobomb” him.

Witness just one of the reasons why fans love Cumberbatch, here:

And fans really love him, as you can see from the tweets below:

This isn’t the first celebrity coloring book the artist has created; similar works on stars like Ryan Gosling and Kate Moss are available at galleries, overseas, and at trendy shops like Topshop and Urban Outfitters.

  • Mini-Pig On Stairs: Hamlet Goes Viral

Mini-Pig On Stairs: Hamlet Goes Viral

Mini-pigs are adorable, no matter what they’re doing. But when they’re navigating carpeted stairs towards a big bowl of oatmeal and oinking the entire time, it’s pretty much cuteness overload.

That’s what YouTube viewers are finding out after a video of Hamlet the pig went viral and brought the mischievous little guy into hearts and homes everywhere; Hamlet’s owners uploaded another video of him demanding a bottle earlier this year and it, too, gained massive internet popularity.

Pigs are highly intelligent and social animals, meaning they make great pets…if you have the room, time, and love to give to them. Even mini-pigs can outgrow their expected size, and they are often abandoned at shelters and overcrowded animal sanctuaries when their owners start to consider them a burden.

They have a superior sense of smell, as you can see in the video below; Hamlet’s nose won’t let him give up on the prize.

Hamlet has single-handedly (hoofedly?) started an obsession with mini-pigs, as evidenced by this selection of tweets. Just be forewarned; you will never be able to eat bacon without feeling guilty again.
