  • Nirvana Among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame officially announced its 2014 inductees today, with upcoming members including Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.

Beatles manager Brian Epstein and original Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham will both receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers, and The E Street Band will be given the Award for Musical Excellence.

Musicians are eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single. The induction ceremony will be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 10th, 2014. The general public will be able to attend the event for the first time in New York City, and tickets go on sale in January. HBO will broadcast the ceremony in May.

Below is Nirvana’s video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Ah, middle school:

Commenting on Nirvana’s swift induction, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman said, “People see the relevancy of that band (Nirvana). We’re just getting into the creative of the show, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with that performance. They have to figure it out.”

    Kiss, being very serious:

Some have wondered why Kiss, who has been eligible for induction for 15 years now, were finally selected. Peresman commented, “The Kiss Army has descended on Cleveland in recent years. And we’ve gotten thousands of letters. They also did extremely well in the public vote.”

    Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer:”

Gabriel was previously inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010, but was unable to attend the ceremony “This time I will definitely go,” the singer told Rolling Stone. “I’m very grateful to have gotten in again. It’s a huge honor since it’s for your whole body of work and not just a specific project.”

  • Hall & Oates Among Six To Be Inducted To Rock HOF

Hall & Oates’ fans can be happy today as the legendary group joins five others, including Nirvana as inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They will be officially sworn in come April 10, 2014.

For fans, Hall and Oates was a different type of group. Coming from Pennsylvania, Daryl Hall and John Oates met in a band competition. Upon realizing they both like the same type of music, they decided to form a band together.

For those not familiar with their brand, it’s been stated it’s a “blue-eyed soul” style. A term used referencing white performers performing music in a rhythm and blues or soul style. Some of the groups greatest hits includes: “Maneater”, “Sarah Smiles”, “Private Eyes” and the iconic “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”.

Fan reaction on twitter is extremely happy about this news.

Hall & Oates was not too concerned about getting into the hall as shown here:

Even though the group said they did not care about getting in, I’m sure they are glad their fans had a say in that. This year’s inductees were voted on by fans. It appears the fans got this one right.

Hall and Oates are bonafide hitmakers; 34 chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, six RIAA albums that went gold and seven that went platinum. Due to their chart success, they outranked The Everly Brother’s as Billboard magazine’s most successful duo of the rock era.

For the second year in a row, the public will be allowed to vote with the artists and members of the music industry. For those that want to vote, simply go to RollingStone.com and vote for your favorite artists from now till December 10th. A “fan ballot” will be counted as one of more than 600 ballots and will be awarded to the top five acts for the Class of 2014.

In order to qualify for the ballot, the nominees had to have released their first album or single in 1988 (25 years ago). You may be wondering how it is that Nirvana is already nominated – has it been 25 years for them already? Yes, it has. The band released a little known cover song called “Love Buzz” by Shocking Blue in 1988 – it was their first single. Nirvana is also the only act this year to be nominated in its first year of eligibility.

  • Google Docs: The Reason Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” Wasn’t “Mangobbler”

Oh man am I glad that they didn’t go with “mangobbler.”

As you probably know, Google unveiled their long-awaiting cloud storage service Google Drive yesterday. It offers 5 GB free storage and allows users to rent more, including as package for 1 TB for 50 bucks a month. With the launch of that product, Google has begun a little mini campaign to promote synergy between some of their most popular products – things like Google Docs (which works seamlessly with Google Drive), Gmail, and Google Calendar.

The campaign prompts users to “Go Google,” which means that if you switch over to all Google products, you can officially say that you’ve “gone Google.” Cute, I guess.

As a part of this campaign, they’ve started to release some viral ads for their various services. One particular video sticks out – the one for Google Docs. That’s because it’s all about Hall and Oates (and the power of Google Docs in songwriting).

Ever wondered how songwriters come up with their lyrics? Well, thanks to Google documents, songwriters can now collaborate live on new ideas from anywhere in the world. Rock on

Yes, this video highlights the fact that users can collaborate on documents in real time with Google Docs. Hall and Oates seem to have the first part down – “Oh, oh here she comes, she’s a…” – but they don’t know what to call her. Let’s just say that some of the suggestions make me really glad they went with maneater. Check it out below:

Google has also put out some “Go Google” videos specific to Gmail and Drive, but they aren’t nearly as awesome. You can check them out below, however.

Now, I dare you to make it through the rest of the day without listening to “Maneater.” This may help – it’s not “Maneater,” but it’s a much better song/video.
