Pauley Perrette Tweets Hair Dye Health Warning

NCIS star Pauley Perrette was recently hospitalized due to a severe allergic reaction to the black hair dye she uses. Now the 45-year-old actress has warned her fans of the dangers of hair coloring.

Perrette plays a goth-inspired forensic scientist named Abby Sciuto on NCIS, and keeps her hair jet black for the role. Perrette, a natural blonde, had been darkening her hair for roughly twenty years, without any serious issues. Though recently, the New Orleans-born actress developed a rash, along with severe swelling.

“The other half of my face had become twice the size of my head,” Perrette explained, and posted the following picture to Twitter while she was in the hospital on July 19:

Perrette warns of the perils of hair dye allergies:

Commenting on allergic reactions to hair dye, Perrette explained, “The most important thing to me is that anyone out there that dyes their hair, particularly black, you need to be aware of the symptoms.”

Jacob Offenberger, an allergist at Northridge Medical Center, said, “If you have hair dye, and the next day or the day after you start to have itchiness and you start to see redness or [an] eczema-type of lesion, it is telling that you that you are having an allergic reaction to that dying. If you would do nothing, the next time you do the hair dye, it’s going to get worse.”

Perrette experienced the same progression – six months before winding up in the hospital, she developed a rash on her scalp and neck, but ignored the symptoms.

Perrette says she is now researching natural hair dye and also looking into wearing a wig, and is back on the NCIS set with her fellow cast mates.

  • Pauley Perrette: ‘NCIS’ Star Hospitalized

Pauley Perrette–best known as the quirky but lovable Abby Sciuto on the CBS hit show NCIS–wound up in the hospital for a rather bizarre reason. She suffered an allergic reaction to the hair dye she’s been using for quite some time now. Pauley has been dying her naturally blonde locks black for about twenty years, and something in that dye wreaked havoc on the actress.

Perrette said in a recent interview that she had been battling slight allergic issues with the hair dye for about a year. This apparently isn’t all that unusual, however, especially for people who regularly dye their hair black.

Pauley Perrette shared her hair color and allergic reaction woes via social media.

She started by sharing this gorgeous photo of herself with NCIS costar Michael Weatherly on the CBS TCA red carpet.

Next came this tweet full of rather frightening and serious information.

Jacob Offenberger is an allergist at Northridge Medical Center near L.A. He says there are warning signs of a hair dye allergy.

“If you have hair dye, and the next day or the day after you start to have itchiness and you start to see redness or [an] eczema-type of lesion, it is telling that you that you are having an allergic reaction to that dying. If you would do nothing, the next time you do the hair dye, it’s going to get worse,” he said.

Pauley Perrette had a similar experience about six months ago following a trip to the salon. She broke out in a bad rash all over her neck and her scalp, but she ignored the symptoms. This time, however, they were too severe to ignore, as the rash was much worse and there was considerable–and very dangerous–swelling involved.

Now the actress, who stars alongside Mark Harmon and Sean Murray–in addition to Michael Weatherly–on NICS, is considering other options in the pursuit of her black hair. Natural hair dye is one. Wigs are another.

Pauley Perrette is on a mission to make sure other people who use hair dye are aware of the symptoms of a hair dye allergy and that they seek medical attention–and stop using the dye–the minute that first symptom occurs.

  • Hair Coloring: 3 Tips For Perfect Spring Hair

In the spring, most people like to color their hair lighter. Even blondes will add highlights or lighten their hair a shade or two. Lighter hair reflects the sun better and makes skin look darker. If you are planning to dye your hair for spring, consider these tips to help you choose the right color and make it last as long as possible.

    Stop Conditioning
Sure conditioner makes your hair softer and more manageable, but it can also strip the color away and leave your dye job looking less than amazing. Even if you don’t color your hair, you shouldn’t condition it everyday because it strips away the natural oils and can damage your hair. If you must condition your colored hair, try to only do so once or twice a week. Be sure to use conditioners that are designed for color treated hair.

    Red Or Blonde
When you think of coloring your hair lighter, blonde is probably the first color that comes to mind. While blonde is obviously the lightest hair color available, there are other colors that can lighten your hair in a more subtle way. If you have dark hair, consider adding red highlights or dyeing your hair a light auburn. The change will not be as dramatic as going blonde but will still give you a lighter color.

Blondes may want to consider adding red highlights as well. The darker contrast of the red will make the blonde stand out more. If you do choose to go blonde this spring, opt for a natural shade instead of a bleached, artificial looking color.

    Chunking Highlights
Highlights are a great way to lighten hair a little without dyeing it completely. If you choose to highlight your hair, choose a color that is at least two shades lighter than your natural hair color. Chunking highlights are going to be popular this spring and if you are feeling really brave, you can try adding them with a hot neon color such as pink or purple.

It’s time to enjoy the sunshine and look your best. When it comes time to dye your hair for spring, remember these three tips and choose your color wisely.

  • Caroline Wozniacki Reveals Hot Pink Hair At Masters

People didn’t just take notice of Caroline Wozniacki at the Masters Par 3 Contest in Augusta, Georgia on Wednesday because she was caddying for fiance Rory McIlroy. Wozniacki was sporting a hot pink ponytail.

It seems the new hair color was just a chance to coordinate with the famous flowers that bloom at the Augusta National Golf Club. Wozniacki even sported hot pink nails and shoes. McIlroy even helped the Danish tennis player color her hair for the event.

After finishing play in the Par-3 Contest McIlroy said, “I just wanted it to match the azaleas.”

The new hair color will most likely be short-lived if a recent tweet by Wozniacki is to be believed.

Wozniacki previously caddied for McIlroy at the Masters in 2013.

“It’s such a nice tournament, the Masters. To be out here at the Par-3 Course with Rory, I’m happy he took me. I was glad to be his caddie again,” said Wozniacki.

One person on Twitter is a fan of Wozniacki’s recent hair choice.

Wozniacki also got in on the golf action, sinking a 30 foot putt on the No. 9 green.
