Goodwill: Grenade Found In Collection Box

Someone took the gift of giving to bizarre heights in Winston-Salem, NC this past week. They nearly gave a bunch of Goodwill employees a heart attack in the process.

According to Winston-Salem Police, this past Thursday they responded to a call from the local Goodwill where an employee said they discovered a grenade in a collection box. They arrived at the location shortly after 9 AM, by which time the device was out of the box and on a desk.

For some reason, it took employees a week to get around to informing law enforcement of the discovery. Maybe they were under the impression it was a paper weight? Whatever the case, it finally occurred to someone that a well meaning do-gooder might have dropped off a dangerous weapon, making it a matter for the authorities to sort out.

Once the police had determined that the grenade was real, members of the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit were brought in. They secured the grenade and took it to the department’s hazardous device disposal area. There they determined that it was indeed live and was very dangerous.

Soon after the grenade was detonated and rendered safe.

The employees at the Goodwill have no idea who brought the item in, and the Winston-Salem Police Department is asking that anyone with any information contact the department at (336) 773-7700.

There’s no word as to whether or not this situation is related to a similar event that happened at a nearby Goodwill back in 2010. At the Peters Creek Parkway Goodwill Store, employees were unaware that there was a grenade in the store until a customer tried to purchase it. The Bomb Squad was brought in to examine the grenade, which was determined to be inert and non-explosive.

To the well intentioned grenade owner, there are many things that it would be great to donate to a Goodwill. A grenade? Not one of them.

  • Kenyan Bus Explosion: Attacks Continue Saturday

A mini bus and nearby cars in Nairobi, Kenya were left in pieces today after an unconfirmed explosive device exploded inside of the traveling mini bus. Reuters tells us that four people were killed while 36 were left wounded in the fourth Kenyan attack this week.

The sudden blast turned car parts into shrapnel to quickly transform a normal day into a tragedy. Officials are still working to determine if the explosive was thrown onto or already on the bus.

This week should be one of celebration for Kenya; they are celebrating its 50th year of independence from Britain. The attackers or force behind the string of attacks is still unknown, so the statement behind them is undetermined.

A summary of this week’s attacks:

-On Tuesday, gunmen riddle a police car with bullets leaving eight people dead near the Somalian border.

-A grenade was hurled at British tourists Thursday– the day of the Kenyan Independence Day. The grenade thankfully malfunctioned, but caused alarm to tourists who were once considered exempt from terrorist activity in Kenya.

-Masked men threw two grenades into a northeastern Kenyan marketplace Friday killing one person and injuring more.

The attackers are officially unknown, but the attacks mirror a September 21st attack by a Somali militant group by the name of al-Shabab. The Westgate attack killed at least 67 people in a four-day period, and al-Shabab told Kenya that such attacks will continue until they discontinue any involvement with Somalian affairs. Kenya currently is an asylum for 475,000 Somali refugees.

Time will tell if these attacks continue. The United Nations, Kenya and Somalia have recently promised to assist any Somalians if they decide to return to their homeland. If this does not reduce the attacks on Kenya, further research is certainly in order to discover the source and reasoning behind these horrific attacks.

  • Soccer Grenade: Iran Field Sees Explosive Thrown

Reports are early and not too detailed, but according to this video–which was uploaded on YouTube–some “fans” threw an object onto an Iranian soccer field during a match. A player, thinking it was trash, picked it up and tossed it aside, only to see it explode on impact. Two seconds was all it might have taken for a very different outcome.

No injuries have been reported, and authorities are investigating the incident.

  • Grenade Found In Package At 2 World Trade Center

A suspicious package found its way into the WTC today, prompting a cautious evacuation of employees after an X-ray turned up an image of what appeared to be a grenade.

The item was discovered just before eleven this morning and police immediately responded, bringing along a bomb squad for good measure. But a search uncovered a harmless toy grenade, and all employees were safely returned to work.

It’s doubtful that there is anyone above elementary school age who doesn’t know about the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, so it’s hard to imagine why anyone would send a package through the building which contained an obviously threatening-looking item, even if it was just a toy. Officials are no doubt looking further into the origins of the package, and WebProNews will provide more coverage as we receive details.
