  • Billy Joel: The Piano Man is a Good Samaritan

Billy Joel is known for way more than simply being the ‘Piano Man.’ In fact to one New York woman he’s even known for being a good Samaritan. The singer was riding his motorcycle through East Hampton on Monday when he saw a woman who had fallen and was sprawled face-down in the middle of the road. He stopped his bike and came to her aid immediately.

In addition to calling 911 for help, he gathered her packages from the road and stayed with her until EMTs arrived. He stayed while they administered help to be certain she was okay. It’s uncertain why the woman fell–whether she suffered from a medical condition or simply tripped as she crossed the road. However in photos provided by The TODAY Show she appeared to be sitting up and alert as she was being treated by the ambulance crew.

Billy Joel isn’t the only celebrity recently to help out someone in need. In recent years Jennifer Garner brought gasoline to a stranded motorist, Patrick Dempsey freed a teenager who was trapped in a car following an accident, and Ryan Gosling prevented a tourist from being run over by a New York City taxi cab. It’s nice to know that all of these celebrities–including Billy Joel–have a human side in addition to their fame in the entertainment industry.

Billy Joel definitely has what it takes to still live up to his ‘Piano Man’ persona, too, however. With more than 150 million records sold since 1972, the legendary singer was set to take the stage at Boston’s Fenway Park on Thursday evening in front of a huge crowd of fans.

At least if anyone in the crowd at Fenway falls down and can’t get up, they’ll rest easy knowing that a good Samaritan as well as an amazing entertainer is in the venue.

Kudos to Billy Joel for being helpful where some celebrities might have simply called 911 and left the scene for fear of causing a media frenzy.

  • Navy Jet Crash: Rescued Pilot Recovering In Critical Care

A Navy pilot who crashed into the Atlantic Ocean this afternoon has survived and is now recovering in hospital.

The F-18 fighter pilot’s aircraft went down off the coast of Virginia earlier today during a training run. After ejecting from his aircraft, the pilot was first collected by a passing “good Samaritan”, the Navy says. The fisherman traveling in his vessel nearby showed up within about ten minutes after a second pilot who was also involved in the mission pinpointed his position.

The unidentified pilot was then recovered by a Navy Hawk helicopter and subsequently taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he is currently listed as being in critical condition.

Naval Spokesman ,Cmdr. Mike Kafka, indicated that the crash occurred around 2:35 p.m., roughly 50 miles off Virginia Beach. Although Kafka has reported that the pilot was both conscious and in critical condition, he did not offer any additional details regarding the crash or the status of the pilot.

This incident arises just a week after a separate and fatal Navy crash.

On January 8, a Navy MH-53E helicopter that was also on a training run crashed about 18 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. Five crew members were aboard the aircraft as it was performing a routine mine countermeasure training run. While two of those aboard survived the ocean wreck, the event tragically claimed three lives.

The memorial service for the three crew members of last week’s crash has been scheduled for Friday at Naval Station Norfolk.

  • Probation Officer Returns $223,600 Dropped by Armored Car

An armored car dropped a bag containing $223,600 in cash while leaving Boomtown Casino in Harvey on Wednesday afternoon. Luckily for the car’s crew, the money was spotted by a Good Samaritan named Jessica Luebke, a probation officer. Luebke saw an unusual bag about 2 x 2.5 foot on the side of the road while driving around 12.30 p.m. It took a while for Luebke to realize what was in the bag but eventually she realized that it was loaded with cash. The cash was in bundles of $20 and $100 bills totaling $223,600.

“I turned around immediately as soon as it registered what um, that actually was, that it was a huge bag of cash, I turned around immediately and called Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.” Said Luebke.

At first, the police officers weren’t sure how the money came to be on the side of the road but later got their answers when an armored car drove up and its crew reported they were tracing a missing cash bag, according to department District Administrator, Jon Reeves.

Reeves said the armored car had just picked up a deposit from Boomtown club but the bag fell off the car as it neared the probation department’s quarters. Reeves said that it is fortunate that a law enforcement office was first to spot the lost bag as it would have been extremely hard to recover the cash had someone else found it.
