The Shoe Project: Star Wars Fans And Vans Come Together For Good Cause

When art and fandom meet, it’s often a beautiful thing to behold; when they meet under the same roof to raise money for sick children, it’s a thousand times sweeter.

While artists have been paying tribute to their favorite films, books, and television shows for years, perhaps no one thing has gotten more love than the “Star Wars” series. Whether it’s to show love for the original trilogy, the newer films, or a combination of both, fans are loyal to a fault and will often go to extreme lengths to create detailed artwork and costumes to celebrate them. That makes them perfect candidates to raise money for a good cause, and one group is hoping to make their project for 2013 a success.

Members of the MidSouth Garrison of the 501st Legion have had so much interest in their past fundraising projects–such as the TK Helmet Project and the As You Wish Helmet Project, which raised money for the Make A Wish Foundation–that they decided to try it again this year, but with a twist. Instead of helmets, they’ve attracted artists from all over the country to create one-of-a-kind Vans shoes to be auctioned off. Every bit of the money raised will go to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

Tyler Phillips of the 501st spoke to WebProNews about the idea, noting that once news of an artist call for the fundraiser got around, the group got responses to The Shoe Project from all over the world. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, they weren’t able to accommodate everyone.

“My wife and I researched custom shoes online, and it appeared as though Vans were the most popular because of the large open area they featured on the shoe. Once we pitched the idea to Lucasfilm and got their approval they helped us pitch the idea to Vans and get them involved,” he said.

Vans graciously donated ten pairs of their shoes for the fundraiser, which will be displayed at the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention in Kentucky on March 16th and 17th. After that, they’ll be posted on eBay for auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to the UK Children’s Hospital. Phillips says that, depending on the interest this year, they’d love to do the project again in 2014.

For now, the group is waiting on approval from Lucasfilm before they can officially announce the artists, but we’ll keep you updated on the project with a sneak peek at the shoes as soon as they’re ready. For more information, check out the project’s Facebook page. Also not to be missed: The Western Kentucky Ghostbusters. These guys (and lovely ladies) are full of heart and devote countless hours to fundraising for the UK Children’s Hospital, as well.

  • Gangnam Style/Ghostbusters Mashup Is Brilliant

I have to admit, I didn’t get the whole “Gangnam Style” fascination when the video first went viral, but the more I’m exposed to it, the more it grows on me. I can’t deny anyone with a sense of humor that refined.

At any rate, some genius has mashed up PSY and Ray Parker Jr., and the results are just epic. I have to wonder what my four-year old daughter, who has just discovered “Ghostbusters” and is in love with the song, would have to say about this.

  • Bustin’ Makes These Floppy Drives Feel Good

I have long been under the impression that Ghostbusters is the perfect movie. It has the perfect cast and the perfect script. It really helps that it’s in my favorite, and woefully neglected, genre – horror comedy. Of course, we can’t forget that the film also has one of the catchiest theme songs ever.

Ray Parker Jr.’s classic Ghostbusters theme song has inspired countless parodies, covers, tributes and everything else one can do with a song with one glaring omission. There has not been a cover of the song as performed by floppy drives. That hole in my heart has now been filled thanks to YouTube user MrSolidSnake745. Check out the performance below and try telling me that it’s not the greatest cover you’e ever heard:

As you can obviously hear, music created by floppy drives is some of the best this world has to offer. If the Ghostbusters theme has made you a fan, check out these other great floppy drive covers.

  • Ghostbusters Teach Management

    Ghostbusters Teach Management

I’m going to be up front with you. I’m a huge fan of Ghostbusters. I fell in love with its humor and creature design. It introduced me to the genius of Bill Murray. Today, it has introduced one more thing to my life – management skills.

The geniuses at Mindflash have created an infographic called: “The Ghostbusters Guide To Management.” It contains wisdom for managers everywhere by taking quotes and events from both Ghostbusters films and applying them to the workplace.

It contains great advice like, “Don’t be afraid to cross the streams” and “Negative attitudes create a river of slime.”

It seems silly at first, but it really does contain great advice that management should take to heart. This does pose a great question though. Should managers be forced to watch Ghostbusters as part of their training now?

  • Hostess, Maker Of Beloved Twinkies, Going Bankrupt: Twitter Reactions

Science – or urban mythology – has constantly told us that Twinkies last forever. They’re man’s best friend in the event of a toxic nuclear fallout because such mortal concerns as expiration dates do not concern Twinkies. Twinkies take the space-time continuum and make rudimentary origami bananas out of it. They’re the Chuck Norris of food. But, Twinkies appear to have met one foe over whom they cannot overcome: bankruptcy.

Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies and other sugar-laden treats near and dear to the American waistline, have announced that they are prepping to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, reports the Wall Street Journal today. So how deeply into the red is Hostess, whose sweet stash also includes Ding Dongs and Ho-Hos? $860 million.

    That’s a big Twinkie.

Despite the megasweet treats from Hostess having precisely zero redeeming health value, people are saddened nonetheless about the news of the impending absence of Twinkies on their grocery shelves. Many people expressed their lament today on Twitter:

No more Twinkies? We’ll have to change the metaphor for “thing that lasts beyond the apocalypse” to “tenured professor.” 22 minutes ago via Echofon · powered by @socialditto

  • Blue Busters, Apple Ghostbusters Parody Video Is Amazing

Blue Busters, Apple Ghostbusters Parody Video Is Amazing

The 80’s was filled with drug use, big hair, and amazing advertisements. All of which can be witnessed within this Apple ad called “Blue Busters”. The drug use might not be direct, but whoever constructed this 2 minute bit of awesomeness had to be on something. It’s a parody video of Ray Parker’s “Ghostbusters” theme song, and it will amaze your eyes.

There’s a bit of backstory to the video which dates back to 1984, when the video was first shown during Apple’s international sales meeting. According to a commenter on YouTube, he was there when it was first shown:

I was there in Oct. 1984. This was not an internal ad. I was a 1984 state of the art multimedia slide show with audio by Ray Parker Jr. who sang the original. There were also live dancers on the stage.

This was the opening presentation of the International Sales Meeting that introduced the Lightwriter later renamed Laserwriter. Apple always used a current movie as a them for the sales meetings. in 1985 it was Back to the Future.

The reason you haven’t been able to witness the video until now is because it’s been locked up, due to Stanford having a massive archive of Apple’s history sealed away. It appears that some of the materials have been leaked and if there are anymore of these videos out there, hopefully someone will be kind enough to share.

The “Blue” being mentioned in the video is referring to IBM, who Apple was in direct competition with during that period of time.
