  • “The Danish Girl” Earns Alicia Vikander Critics Choice Award

The Danish Girl garnered Alicia Vikander a nomination for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress category, and on Sunday it earned her a big win at the Critics Choice Awards.

Vikander won in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Gerda Wegener opposite Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl.

In the film, Alicia Vikander as Wegener is the wife of a transgender woman played by Eddie Redmayne. She made sure to reference the real-life couple in her speech.

“I was surprised that I couldn’t find enough about this incredible couple,” she said as she accepted her award. “I was very happy and extremely grateful when I was invited to shed light and bring light to a story which I think all of us thought was very moving, but also very important to tell, about two very pioneering women who went on a big journey together. So thank you.”

Vikander also thanked Redmayne, who has gotten much critical acclaim for his role in The Danish Girl.

“I want to thank Eddie Redmayne who was my partner on this,” she said. “He’s a wonderful actor but also my best support throughout this shoot.”

  • “The Danish Girl” Could Mean Second Oscar for Eddie Redmayne

The Danish Girl has provided Eddie Redmayne with yet another opportunity to win an Oscar. The Theory of Everything star took home the Oscar for Best Actor last year, for his role as Professor Stephen Hawking. He has now been nominated in the same category again.

The biggest question about this nomination for The Danish Girl, is can it beat out The Revenant? Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for the same category as Eddie Redmayne. The Revenant was a big winner at the Golden Globes.

The Danish Girl received a total of four Oscar nods. In addition to Eddie Redmayne’s Best Actor nomination, Alicia Vikander was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. The Danish Girl also received Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

The Danish Girl tells the story of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Elbe–played by Eddie Redmayne–was one of the first known transgender people to undergo sex reassignment surgery.

Do you think Eddie Redmayne can beat out Leonardo DiCaprio in a big victory for The Danish Girl?

  • Alicia Vikander to Receive Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Rising Star Award

Alicia Vikander will be honored in January with an award at The Palm Springs International Film Festival. One of the stars of The Danish Girl, Vikander will receive the festival’s Rising Star Award.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner spoke of Alicia Vikander when making the announcement.

“In The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander delivers a superb performance as Gerda Wegener, the wife of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe,” he said. “She projects so much love and pain as she goes on a journey with Lili during an era when there was no precedent for it. Gerda’s own transformation as a character speaks to the story’s themes of courage and self-acceptance.”

Past recipients of the Rising Star Award include Jessica Biel, Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch, Bryce Dallas Howard, Terrence Howard, Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson. Howard, Kendrick, and Lawrence went on to receive Academy Award nominations during the same years they received this prestigious award. Might that mean Alicia Vikander is a shoe-in for an Oscar?

It was just days ago that Alicia Vikander was honored for her role in the film Ex Machina. She won Best Supporting Actress at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Ex Machina took Best British Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards.

Alicia Vikander is someone the film world will no doubt see a lot of in the coming years. The Danish Girl will likely be her biggest claim to fame–at least so far.

  • Alicia Vikander Gets High Marks for On-Screen Appearances, Not So Much for Up Close and Personal Meetings

Alicia Vikander stars opposite Eddie Redmayne in the film The Danish Girl, and while she is receiving rave reviews for her on-screen performances, she seemingly refuses to perform when meeting up with people off-screen.

The L.A. Times reports the press has often found her to be aloof, describing her as “cooly remote,” “polite but not warm” and “certainly not vulnerable.”

When confronted with her reputation, Alicia Vikander, who is insistent her name is pronounced “Ah-liss-sia,” and not “Ah-lee-sha,” became quite upset.

“It’s tough,” she said. “I try to be myself, but I’m always nervous letting go. I am very serious about my work. But I think it’s a bit of a cultural thing, too. Everyone thinks my English is so good. But with the language barrier, I often feel like I want to add that little extra flavor to what I’m saying. Sometimes I wish people could hang out with me for 10 minutes when I’m speaking Swedish.”

Alicia Vikander is driven. When she was just 15 when she moved away from home and lived in a rented flat to study at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. She worked herself so strictly that at age 17 a nurse suggested she seek counseling for stress.

Withdrawing from the ballet school to pursue acting, Vikander has forged ahead in the same workaholic manner, but with great success–at least on-screen.

Unfortunately for Alicia Vikander, fans want their Hollywood icons to open up to them and share their “reality.” That’s something she clearly has great difficulty with, but with time will likely acquiesce.

The Danish Girl is hitting theaters at the end of a year when many transgender stories were front and center in the media. Alicia Vikander–as Gerda Wegener–is the “one figure onscreen who seems to breathe the sharp air of reality,” according to the New York Times.

Alicia Vikander will likely one day get better marks off-screen to appease her fans. If it doesn’t come naturally, she will learn to add the appearances to her acting repertoire.
