  • Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi Dies At 85

Hiroshi Yamauchi, the former Nintendo president that ran the company during its transition from a playing card company to one of the world’s largest game developers, passed away due to pneumonia this morning. He was 85.

Yamauchi began his career at Nintendo in 1949 when he was asked by his grandfather, then president of Nintendo, to take over for him. Under his leadership, Nintendo became one of the most successful playing card companies in Japan.

After more than two decades of working in traditional games, Yamauchi decreed that Nintendo would start working in the newly emerging market of electronic games. The company made a few arcade games, but it wasn’t until 1981’s Donkey Kong that Nintendo had a certifiable worldwide hit.

After this, he spearheaded the creation of the Famicom, or Nintendo Entertainment System. During this time, he personally approved all in-house developed games for release. His keen sense of what was fun helped propel Nintendo-made games into the legendary status they hold to this day.

Yamauchi continued to be the driving force behind Nintendo’s hardware, including the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube, until he retired in 2002. At that time, he became chairman of Nintendo’s board of directors. Satoru Iwata took his place and became the first person outside of the Yamauchi family to be president of Nintendo since its founding.

At the time of his death, Yamauchi was the second-largest shareholder of Nintendo, and was estimated to be the 12th richest man in Japan.

  • Shadow Of The Eternals Wants To Drag Players Back Into Eternal Darkness

Before Silicon Knights became the butt end of a very sad joke, the developer made one of the most critically acclaimed games on the Gamecube. Enteral Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is still remembered to this day as one of the best games for the console, and one of the best horror games ever made. Talk of a sequel has been floating around for years, but now it seems like it may actually happen.

IGN posted a teaser trailer today for a game called Shadow of the Eternals. If the title wasn’t enough of a hint, the teaser outright says that the game is being made by the team behind Eternal Darkness. The studio attached to the project is called Precursor Games though, perhaps as way to distance itself from the bad reputation Silicon Knights has built up for itself over the past few years.

According to Kotaku, Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack is on board with the spiritual sequel. There’s some cause for alarm as Dyack does not have the best reputation in the industry anymore either, but it might be worth it to give this new game the benefit of the doubt.

Besides, the folks at Silicon Knights Precursor Games know that this is likely their last shot at actually being relevant in the industry again. Now it has to convince everybody to support the game when it launches a crowdfunding campaign, presumably via Kickstarter, on Monday.

  • Gamestop Will No Longer Be Accepting Nintendo GameCubes

Well, from what we learned today ,and as you can see in the banner above,

Gamestop will no longer accept Nintendo GameCubes

The ability to trade in your Nintendo GameCube system, accessories, or games ends on April Second.

My question is, if Gmestop doesn’t take any more Gamecube trade-ins, then who is going to buy all those copies of Mario Party 4, 5, 6, &7?

The Nintendo GameCube was released in North America on November 18, 2001 and sold 21.74 million units worldwide, and was discontinued on February 22, 2007. Compared to other Nintendo consoles this was an abject failure. The GameCube did have a few shining moments like it’s far superior version of Resident Evil:4.
